A faculty member and two alumni in the School of Business Administration have funded a student scholarship at the University of South Carolina Aiken.

Dr. Bill Marsh, a finance professor in the School of Business Administration (SOBA), is completing his 27th year of teaching at USC Aiken. Last year, he established the School of Business Administration Teaching Excellence Endowment. Funding for the endowment provides support for an annual award to a SOBA faculty member in order to recognize outstanding teaching.

Marsh, who plans to retire at the completion of the 2008-2009 school year, recently followed that gift with a new fund to support student scholarships. The Dr. William H. Marsh Scholarship Endowment Fund will be used to provide an annual scholarship to a full-time, degree-seeking student who is a junior in the SOBA.

Marsh has begun his own campaign—“Give Me Five”—to fund the scholarship. He recently secured contributions fromtwo SOBA alumni, Rhett Sinclair and Bill Danielson.

“When I asked Bill and Rhett to ‘Give Me Five,’ each responded immediately with $5,000,” said Marsh. “They gave because they know, as do I, that whenever you give, you always have more. And I hope that others will follow their lead by deciding to ‘Give Me Five’ as well.”

According to Sinclair, “Helping fund the initial contribution to this scholarship provided me two ways to benefit: one is to provide a SOBA student the opportunity to be recognized and encouraged to continue in the USCA SOBA.

Secondly and possibly more importantly was to recognize Dr. Marsh and the excellent approach to teaching he provides. We will surely miss him on our faculty staff.”

Dr. Ralph Byington, SOBA dean, described the scholarship as a “testimony to [Marsh’s] dedication to teaching.”

“This scholarship will allow deserving students to continue their education in a time of difficult financial conditions,” Byington said. “I can think of no better recognition to Dr. Marsh’s years of teaching than an endowed scholarship in his name. This endowment along with the William Marsh Teaching Award that he funded last year will serve as a reminder to all faculty of his devotion to USCA.”

“When I enrolled at USC Aiken,” Danielson said, “I was a non-traditional student, married, and had a child on the way. I relied heavily on both athletic and academic scholarships to help me get through.

As a finance major, I had the opportunity to study under Dr. Bill Marsh, a gentleman I am proud to call my friend and mentor. We have remained very close over the years, and I am proud to honor him with my contribution to his scholarship. This is my way of helping other business students on their road to success. Hopefully, they too will see their way to give back when asked.”

For more information, contact the SOBA at 803.641.3340.

Security Federal Bank and renowned South Carolina artist Jim Harrison have made a signed version of The 2009 Coca-Cola Calendar and the first-ever Coastal Pathways Calendar for 2009 available for purchase through the end of January 2009.Proceeds from the sale of these calendars will benefit the Anne Harrison Scholarship Fund at the University of South Carolina Aiken in memory of the artist’s late mother.

The 13th calendar in the Coca-Cola series, The 2009 Coca-Cola Calendar, an 11" x 13" size, features twelve full color images appropriately arranged to match the seasons of the year. Throughout the calendar, the images are nostalgic and created around a Coca-Cola trademark of years past.

Harrison said, "The Coca-Cola trademark has been a big part of my life for many years. I painted Coca-Cola wall bulletins through high school and college and have used it in over 80 major paintings during my art career. It remains near and dear to my heart and creates a certain excitement with every new painting."

In addition, Harrison is releasing the first-ever Coastal Pathways Calendar for 2009. The 11" x 13" calendar features twelve full color images of the beloved Southern coast. According to Harrison, "The vista of the coastal area is awesome I never tire of looking at the ocean or the marsh, and I come away from each visit there with fresh ideas for new paintings.”

“We are excited to be partnering with USC Aiken again this year in a program that supports our nationally recognized university. The calendars are very popular with our customers and have the added benefit of supporting education in Aiken County,” said Chris Verenes, president of Security Federal Bank. “I would encourage everyone to show their support of our outstanding university by purchasing a 2009 Jim Harrison calendar.”

Harrison, a licensed artist of The Coca-Cola Company, received a Merit Award for the calendar series in the Calendar Marketing Association's seventh annual National Calendar Awards competition. Harrison’s art and writing have placed him among the nation’s foremost chroniclers of earlier Twentieth Century rural life. His paintings faithfully bring to life the nostalgic images of America’s rural past with subjects that represent the true spirit of the American agrarian society. Harrison has had successful one-man shows at the prominent New York Hammer Galleries and the San Francisco Conacher Galleries. His works have also been included in annual shows at the prestigious National Academy Gallery in New York.

The signed and numbered calendars are $20 each or $35 for both and are only available at Security Federal Bank branches. For more information on works by Jim Harrison, call Jim Harrison Gallery at 1-800-793-5796.

USC Aiken’s virtual student tour, located online at www.uscafocusedonyou.com, was recently ranked in the top 10 virtual tours of universities in the United States.

GCF, a marketing firm that tracks trends in college websites, selected 100 colleges and universities to be evaluated by using U.S.News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” rankings. The 100 includes the top 20 national universities, the top 5 each Northern, Southern, Midwestern, and Western master’s universities, the top 20 liberal arts colleges, the top 5 each Northern, Southern, Midwestern, and Western baccalaureate universities, and 20 other colleges. GCF staff narrowed the list of 100 down to 10, and then had a focus group of high school juniors and seniors rank the top 10.

USC Aiken ranked 5th and was highlighted in an article on virtual tours in the October edition of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education’s (CASE) Currents magazine.

The USC Aiken tour was designed by members of the University’s Office of Marketing and Community Relations. Jennifer Conner, director of the office, said that she was thrilled when she heard the news. Conner commented, “It’s great that Jeff [Mastromonico] was able to take the collective ideas of our staff and develop the tour in house. Most of the other colleges in the top 10 hired an outside designer for their tour, and I’m so proud that we were able to tap into the resources we have on staff here at USCA for ours.”

The virtual tour entitled, “My USC Aiken Is…” features five students who share their stories of life at the University. USC Aiken Chancellor Tom Hallman said, “This is a wonderful recognition for the University and our marketing staff. I’m very proud of their efforts.”

Conner also noted that when she was interviewed by Brenda Foster of GCF for the Currents article that Foster shared the reason the focus group students identified with USC Aiken’s virtual tour was that it “seemed real.” Conner agreed, “Today’s prospective students appreciate a real taste of the university as opposed to a marketing commercial. We want students to fall in love with USC Aiken for what it is, and our current students are the best voice for that.”
