Top 10 Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

When it comes time to buy a car, consumers basically have two choices: new or used. Buying new will cost you, but you'll get all the latest bells and whistles, a comprehensive manufacturer warranty and the peace of mind that you're not purchasing a vehicle that has been put through the wringer. Go the used route, and you typically get more for your money. However, you never know if you'll get a peach or a lemon — or do you?

There's a relatively new type of used car on the market that offers the advantages of buying both new and used. That is, you get more for every dollar spent, as well as the solace of knowing that the vehicle's health and well-being is guaranteed by the vehicle's manufacturer or an independent agency. It goes by many names, but is most commonly known as certified pre-owned (CPO).

To qualify as CPO, a vehicle must be inspected, refurbished to "almost new" condition and certified as such by the vehicle's manufacturer or an independent certifying authority. This helps to almost eliminate the chance of a consumer getting a lemon. Furthermore, CPOs typically come with some type of factory-backed warranty and financing, just like a new car.

There are variations regarding what is termed certified pre-owned, however, so it's important to note the distinctions. Manufacturer (or "factory") CPO vehicles are sold only at authorized dealers. The cars are generally five years old or newer and have fewer than 80,000 miles, and they often cost more than vehicles certified by independent authorities. Independently certified CPOs can represent good value, especially since independent authorities may hold a vehicle to a higher standard than a manufacturer. Independents include brands such as the National Vehicle Certification Program, CarMark and others. Finally, there are dealer-certified vehicles. These generally have not been inspected by anyone outside the dealership, but do typically carry a warranty or extended service contract to provide some protection to the consumer.

While we aren't fans of the dealer-CPO vehicle programs, we do think the others, in general, take much of the worry out of buying used, and the value proposition of CPO cars has garnered consumer interest in this tough economy.

"Across almost every major [manufacturer], new car behaviors have trended downward, used has gone downward and, for the most part, CPO has trended up," says Steve Gallagher, marketing manager for Toyota's CPO program. Gallagher also notes that May was Toyota's best-ever CPO sales month and that the company is on track for its best CPO year ever.

Be careful, though. CPO certification adds, on average, $1,300 to the price of a used car, and it can go as high as $2,000. In today's strong used-car market, that can bring the price of a CPO car close to the price of a new car, and that's before manufacturer incentives. Many manufacturers offer more favorable financing rates, though, so buyers can save money that way.

Take a look at the 10 best-selling CPO vehicles through the first six months of 2010. We examine what makes them hot sellers and talk about the strengths and weaknesses of each.

10. Lexus RX

Roughly half of all luxury cars are leased, so it is important for the manufacturers to have effective CPO programs to keep the sales flowing once the cars come off lease. One of the hottest CPO vehicles is the Lexus RX. Though it's a highly desirable crossover as a new vehicle, premium pricing puts it out of reach for many consumers. A lightly used CPO version is the next best thing. However, CPO prices aren't that low, as the RX's residual value is among the best in the industry. RX buyers get a vehicle with easy ingress/egress, a luxurious interior, plenty of room for five, useful cargo space and a glass-smooth ride. They can also go green by opting for a hybrid.

9. Honda Odyssey

Minivans are the ultimate in practical transportation. They offer room for up to eight people, and all passengers can get to their seats easily thanks to sliding side doors and thoughtful seat arrangements. But minivans can also be expensive, especially if they are loaded with the entertainment features families desire. The Honda Odyssey is no exception, with starting prices as high as $40,000 for a brand-new, loaded EX-L. But it's a roomy, comfortable minivan that handles well. The Odyssey also gets a powerful engine, useful interior storage and the benefits of Honda's reputation for reliability and high resale values.

8. BMW 5-Series

Luxury automakers tend to put more backing into their CPO programs, hoping to turn CPO buyers into new-car buyers. BMW's CPO program adds a 2-year/50,000-mile warranty at the end of the original 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, and includes two years of BMW Roadside Assistance, a comprehensive inspection and a CarFax vehicle history report. The BMW 5-Series' mix of usable space and on-road dynamics makes it tempting for families who want precision German engineering. It is the most fun-to-drive car of its size, and the BMW roundel badge is a desired status symbol.

7. Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a model of luxury and sophistication. Though it isn't Mercedes' most affordable car, it's the company's best CPO seller. "We like to say the E-Class is the heart and soul of the Mercedes brand," says Rob Moran, manager of product and technology public relations for Mercedes-Benz USA. "It really does offer a compelling balance of quality, value, safety and exclusivity." The Mercedes CPO program consists of a 162-point inspection (including a road test), a 12-month extension on the original factory warranty and roadside assistance for the life of the vehicle. Customers can also extend their warranties by 12 or 24 months, but the warranty can never exceed seven years or 100,000 miles.

6. Toyota Corolla

Toyota's sparkling reputation for quality and reliability has taken a series of heavy blows in the last few months, but the company's CPO program is still one of the strongest in the industry. The program includes a 160-point inspection, a CarFax report, a 3-month/3,000-mile comprehensive warranty, a 7-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty, roadside assistance and new-car financing rates. The vehicles are also required to have less than 85,000 miles. The Toyota Corolla is a no-frills car that doesn't quite have the sporty character of the Mazda3 or the engineering precision of a Honda Civic. It does, however, have a reputation as a reliable, safe and affordable means of getting from point A to point B. Add the backing of a CPO program, and the Corolla becomes a very attractive second car for the family, or a starter car for younger buyers.

5. Chevrolet Impala

Though the Chevrolet Impala sells fairly well to the masses, it makes this list due to large-volume fleet sales. Many of those cars are used for only a few years and then go into Chevy's CPO program. Compared with the other vehicles on this list, the Impala isn't as modern. Its architecture dates back into the late 1980s. The last redesign was in 2005, and even that didn't mark much of a change from the previous generation. Still, the Impala has lots of interior space, a large trunk and some good-looking variants. Chevrolet's CPO program includes the remainder of the original warranty, a 12-month/12,000 bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 117-point inspection, a vehicle history report, three months of OnStar and XM radio, and special financing rates.

4. Honda Civic

Given Toyota's recent troubles, Honda has the best reputation for quality and reliability in the industry. Civic buyers will find more than they expect in a small car. It offers lots of usable room for the size, a fun-to-drive character and a level of engineering quality that is matched by few in its class. Plus, the Civic, perhaps more than any other car, holds its resale value well. That means CPO prices may be high, but you should do well when it comes time to sell. Be sure to check the price of your targeted CPO vehicle against a new one, though. A hot CPO seller could cost as much as a new car. Honda's CPO program includes a 150-point inspection by a dealer technician, a CarFax report, a 12-month/12,000-mile extension on the original warranty and special financing offers.

3. Toyota Camry

It's no surprise the Toyota Camry is on this list. It has been the best-selling car in the US. for the last several years, so there are plenty of used cars eligible for the program. The Camry is practically a luxury car in midsize sedan guise. It features a plush ride and interior trim and amenities that make for a very comfortable environment.

2. BMW 3-Series

The new BMW 3-Series is one of the best-handling, most driver-oriented vehicles on the market, but it is priced out of reach for many of us. However, a 2- or 3-year-old 3-Series with between 6,000 and 60,000 miles on the odometer and similar looks and handling can be had for thousands less. Buyers can opt for a coupe, convertible, wagon or sedan — all of which feature driving dynamics that are the envy of the industry. Be thrifty with equipment and watch pricing, though, because the 3-Series holds its value well and can be slathered with expensive options.

1. Honda Accord

Like the Toyota Camry, the Honda Accord has been among the top sellers for many years. The Accord is a well-engineered car. It's larger inside and out than any of its competitors yet weighs less than all of them, which gives it fine handling characteristics and impressive fuel economy. Both of its engines are quite capable, and the interior environment is modern but inviting. The Accord is a reliable car that delivers great value for the dollar, but be careful how much you pay. The Accord holds a high resale value, so it will cost you more up front but will bring more when it's time to sell.

Congress trying to weigh in on the Auto Loan Industry

In a recent article by Jim Puzzanghera of the Los Angeles Times, there was some interesting information in regards to the government and their interest in consumer auto loans. The article hits on some interesting side notes, but the main focus of the article deals with the Governments most recent interest of consumer auto loan regulation and how soon it might actually happen.

The article talks about a customer in San Diego who purchased a vehicle, drove the vehicle home, and then a week later was forced into signing new terms at an unfavorable interest rate. Let me say that this story is very far fetched and misleading to anyone not well versed in the auto industry.

Don’t get me wrong, it is highly common and normal for Dealers to sell cars without having loan approvals. It happens all the time, and the finance department usually ends up securing the auto loan within the following days of sale. The difference is that a consumer is only obligated to their original contract. This means that if a dealer comes back and says, unfortunately the best option the lenders have given us is: this rate, this term, and this payment amount, then it’s totally at the consumers digression to accept it.

The caveat to this is that dealers aren’t doing this to be your enemy and they’re not trying to make your life miserable. A lot of times vehicles get sold outside of banking hours and in that case it is not favorable for the customer or the dealer to sit around and wait for the bank to open. The second point is that most of the time dealer financing is very accurate with their original rates and terms, but there is an occasional adjustment that is required. The third and more important point is that more than 50% of the time, the lender actually comes in at better terms and the consumer’s payment and finance charge end up going down.

The bottom line is that dealers are in this to make money, and the only way that dealers will make money is if consumers buy cars, and the only way consumers can purchase vehicles is with consumer auto loans. So let’s face it, with the tight economy right now (2010) not everyone can get a loan, and if you’re reading this, then let me ask how many loan officers and bank managers do you know. Probably nowhere near the amount as your average dealer finance manager.

Dealer finance departments work countless hours to get you approved and 9 times out of 10, the dealer finance dept will be able to get a sub prime person approved well before that person will find themselves a loan. So take this advice. If you have flawless credit, then remember, you can’t do your own financing and you don’t have to let the dealer do it; it’s your choice. If you have sub-par credit, then chances are the dealer will get you a far better approval then you will ever find. Use the dealers financing connections to your benefit and when you use that loan for good payment history, then you can do your own financing in the future.

In the end it is your right and your responsibility to ensure that your loan is fair. In my opinion the government doesn't need to regulate more lending, we just need consumers to know their rights, and it is absolutely your right to arrange your own financing before ever walking into a dealership.

Buying your first Car

If you live in Tucson Arizona and your thinking about buying your first car, then you’re in luck. Now… if you live anywhere besides Tucson Arizona, don’t worry, you’re still in luck. Car buy has never been any easier, well except for the last decade, but who’s really paying any attention to that anyways.

Here’s the deal, if you want to get a car then it’s going to be possible, but a couple things are required and should take place before this journey begins.
You need to think about how much car you can realistically afford and what kind of vehicle is in that price range.

Time and time again, we see customers who are looking for their first vehicle, want to pay as little as possible and who want the “Mack Daddy” of all vehicles. Let me tell you that this is not realistic. Everyone has to walk before they crawl and if you’ve never financed a vehicle then this is your time to crawl.

Now if you’ve got the money to buy any car of your choice, then congratulations and skip the rest of this article. But back to reality, just realize that your first car can not always be your primary choice of vehicle. However once you buy something and establish yourself as a responsible buyer then life gets better and you’ll be able to purchase something more to your likings. The key here is establishing yourself. This is the hardest step and the most important part of purchasing a vehicle.

The easiest, most practical, and least expensive way to get your first auto loan is through the utilization of a co-signer on the loan. Now, everyone dreads doing this and I don’t blame them, but if this can be an option for you then it’s important to take it. The trick is to finance an average vehicle that you can afford, and pay it off as soon as you can. Once that has happened then you can most like move onto something more expensive and much closer to the dream car that you were thinking of the first time around.

If you don’t have anyone who is willing to co-sign then your venture might be a little more difficult and time consuming but definitely not impossible. The trick is to show stability in your life. This means holding a job, a residence and maybe even having some down payment. If you can do two to three of these then there’s a great chance that you’ll be able to get approved for an auto loan.

So in summary, here’s the breakdown.

Create a vehicle budget
Pick a realistic purchase price and vehicle
Find an auto co-signer that you’re comfortable using
Have good job and living stability
Save your money for a small down payment (maybe 10% of car price)
Make your payments on time… very regularly!
Drive it for a year

Remembering Corey Haim

In the past year, famed actor Corey Haim spent much time performing in a couple different venues and it was our dearest enjoyment to have his appearance in our recent Tucson film, called Trade In. Over the last year DALA Productions produced a used car comedy film named Trade In which took place in a Tucson used car dealership. Corey Haim made a special appearance in the film as himself and his contributions to this effort really boosted the moral of the cast and crew, as well as the content of the film itself.

Corey Haim was a highly talented individual who’s special contributions to the film industry and society in general will be well remembered and appreciated for a long time to come. It was our great pleasure to meet and work with you Corey and we thank you for everything that you have given us.

If you’re thinking about purchasing a used car or some other type of vehicle in the near future then it is most likely a safe bet that you will need to explore some type of financing option. When it comes to exploring your financing options you might be worried, lost, or confused and this shouldn’t be the case.

There are finance members at every dealership whose day in and day out function is to process loans and work connections for approvals, and some of these finance guys are the quickest route towards getting an auto loan. Don’t get me wrong, with the economic status where it is, lending miracles are slim, and the majority of the picture boils down the fact base history of your income and credit report, but there is a slight angle that is still possible to work based on personal connections and unless you’re a loan officer then a car dealership might be your best friend.

Be honest about your credit

Being up front and honest about your credit is crucially important for obtaining an auto loan. If you play games or hide facts then your situation might become even more impossible.

Use your surroundings

If you work in a public, or federal job then there might be a credit union that is affiliated with your work place. Do some research and find out, because this might be the easiest and cheapest money to borrow for your next car loan. Some great examples are companies like Wal-Mart, or the US Post Office. These companies provide their own lending to employee’s and a lot of times they want to help, and will be more prone to overlooking negative facts to get you approved on your next auto loan. Especially when their the same company that provides your paycheck.

Don’t give up!

Times might seem bad, but there are lending opportunities out there for everyone. The key is networking yourself and learning where to look and who to talk to, but if you stay persistent then you might just get approved your next car loan sooner then you think.

The minute that you drive a vehicle off of the car lot, it is fair to say that will usually owe a little bit more for the vehicle is then worth. This is due to financing taxes, license fees, and other miscellaneous items. (If you bought your vehicle and made a large down payment, then this scenario might not be applicable for you). Now, in the situation that you do owe more for your vehicle then it is worth, and it becomes totaled by your insurance, here’s what happens…

Nine out of ten times your insurance company is only going to pay you for what they feel the car is worth. And since you owe more for your car then it’s worth this means that your insurance company isn’t going totally to pay off your vehicle, instead they’ll just pay off a large portion of the balance and leave you with the rest. If this happens, then you’re stuck making payments on a car or vehicle that you don’t have (because it’s totaled).

Now, where Gap Insurance comes in is that the Gap company will pay off that remaining balance, often called “the Gap between what you owe and what the insurance has paid.” Having this protection is highly valuable, because if you end up financing a vehicle that you don’t even have, then it is often very difficult to get a into a another car loan.

There are many different companies that sell Gap insurance, and there are usually multiple price ranges for Gap insurance. On average, it is fair to see Gap insurance priced from $300 to $800. The reason for such a drastic price difference is one of two things.

One, there are many Gap insurances available, and Gap offered by a company like Safeguard Insurance pays the for your payoff gap, and also your insurance deductible (standard $500 deductible). The second factor to consider is the term of the loan that you’re financing your vehicle for. Gap insurance usually has a higher price for the longer the term is. This is because you are being protecting for a longer period of time. If you plan on leasing or financing your car, truck, or SUV for a shorter time, like 24 months, then the Gap insurance will most likely be much less expensive.

Overall Gap is not for everyone, but for the standard person buying a vehicle, Gap can be highly valuable. The ideal benefit about buying Gap insurance is that it usually only changes your monthly payment by about five dollars, and it can save your thousands. This can be a highly valuable investment in a place like Tucson Arizona, or similar low insured area’s where there is an unfortunately high amount of “Hit and Runs”. If any of these scenarios fit you, then consider protecting your next car purchase with Gap Insurance.

GM moves forward, while Saab moves out!

As of this morning General Motors Co. has finally moved forward with the decision to sell the automaker Saab . After months of negotiations and setbacks, Saab has been sold to Spyker Cars NV for the small price of $74 million. The Dutch luxury sports car maker plans on moving the Saab assembly to Trollhattan, Sweden where the Swedish vehicles will continue production.

“We will be concentrating all of our efforts into reviving Saab and transforming it into a sustainable and profitable company with the confidence to be bold.”, quoted by Spyker CEO Victor Muller.

Spyker seems confident that Saab will move forward and restore the Saab image to the world. The Swedish automaker has plans on unveiling the redesigned 9-5 by the end of this year and also the new 9-4X crossover sometime during 2011.

What does this mean to current Saab Owners?

Spyker Cars has had a solid history of producing top notch luxury and it’s more then likely that the their line of Saab’s will reflect their value and quality down to the smallest nut and bolt. This migration should be comforting and exciting to current Saab owners and future Saab shoppers.

I don’t think I’ve ever written anything more fitting. Sometimes you truly can’t judge a book by its cover, and more times than not, you really can’t judge a vehicle from its paint job. Know the vehicle you’re getting

So regardless of what it is, you just don’t want it. The less history that your car has… the better. Don't get me wrong, every car produces some slight history. If you’ve ever looked at a vehicle report, then you’ll know that there are usually lots of entries for registration’s, title updates, state transfers, and other types of clerical inputs. Occasionally there are even reported accidents, and most of the time these are slight fender benders, but at least if you’ve checked the vehicle history, then you know what you’re getting ahead of time.

Just Ask!

Most dealers are willing to provide a Carfax or an Experian AutoCheck report but its up to you “the customer” to ask for one. If you’ve found a dealership that promotes vehicle history and has clean cars, then chances are you are in shopping from a safe place. Just realize that it’s always safe to do some research.

What’s in the future for Toyota

If you’ve turned on the television this week then you’ve probably noticed one of two things. The names “Tiger Woods” and “Toyota” being used everywhere. Each powerhouse seeming to have their own set of issues and now both trying to fully recover their public reputation before it’s too late. As you might imagine the main focus of this blog isn’t golf, so the primary point that I’m going to make is about Toyota.

If you are one of the many millions of people that want or need to buy a car this year, then you probably have some questions to ask.

Should I still consider buying a Toyota?

Lets assess the situation and then we’ll decide

In a press conference on January 26, 2010, Toyota suspended the sale of many vehicles based on a building history of faulty accelerator pedals. Since that initial time frame, Toyota has continued in the spotlight, and in more recent news there is speculation of faulty steering systems in late model Toyota Corolla’s. As of right now there is no official confirmation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but it’s definitely receiving attention.

What does this mean to you?

Toyota has become a major name brand in the US and over the past year they have overcome astonishing numbers. First they broke selling records, and now they’re breaking recall records. The plus side to all of this is that Toyota is doing something, and trying to maintain as much customer satisfaction as possible. We have to understand that while not every Toyota on the lot has a defect, they are still willing to replace every vehicles components, and that adds up!

Where do I go from here?

At this point Toyota has really started hitting the airwaves, and they’re now attempting to restore faith in their product, and overcome customer reactions.

In my opinion, buyers have to look at the overall picture. Any vehicle that you plan on purchasing is susceptible to mechanical failure, and while if you still want to purchase a Toyota, then you at least get the comfort that their problems are moving forward. I think that if you have had your hopes set on purchasing a Toyota, then it is important to continue with consideration and really explore their selection of vehicles. There are many brands out there, but Toyota has successfully continued to outsell competition for a reason.

5 things you should have to get a Car Loan

If you or someone that you know happens to be in the market for a vehicle, then this might be worth your time to read. When you purchase your next vehicle you’re going to do one of two things. Pay cash, or get a loan (or I guess you could try stealing it, but that’s another blog).

The bottom line is that cars are expensive. I mean let’s face it, $20k for a ford Taurus. Prices have gone up and the average person can’t usually pay out of pocket. The next best thing is financing, and with the current economy, obtaining an auto loan isn’t exactly easy; however it can be done, and it will go smoother if you remember to bring these things with you.

1. Drivers License

Believe it or not, I see people trying to buy vehicles all of the time without having their drivers license. Sometimes they just forget it, and other times they don’t have one, but this is usually a necessity. I won’t say that it’s not possible to get a loan without one, but if you’re buying a car, than you really should have one.

2. Proof of Income

One of the most crucial aspects of getting a loan today is showing your income statements. With the collapse of the mortgage industry and the current state of the economy, being able to prove to the bank that you have incoming revenue is a top priority for the loan process. On the average, you should bring in your last 3 pay stubs.

If you happen to own a business, or get paid by 1099’s then you should also remember to bring in your last 2 years of taxes and supporting documents that show your income. If you are retired, receiving social security, or any other kind of benefits, it is important to bring in those statements. If you don’t have statements then sometimes lenders will accept bank statements that show regular direct deposits from organization.

3. Proof of Residence

Another common stipulation that lenders ask for is proof of where you live. They want to make sure that everything you say about yourself is the truth, and this especially stands for your home address. This is more common for applicants that have recently moved or have lived in numerous addresses over the years, but the it is important to bring a formal document that lists your name with your home address.

Good examples are utility statements, phone bills, or bank statements. Something to remember is that since the establishment of OFAC, you have to have a physical address (not a PO Box) to get a loan. This means that if you commonly use a PO Box for mail, then you must find a statement that also lists the service address. If this is you, then cable, electric, and utility statements all usually show the service address.

4. Down Payment

There’s no saying that a down payment will completely play the primary role in the banks decision to grant you a loan, but it can definitely be a factor. I mean don’t get me wrong, if you’ve recently had two repossessions, then keep saving your dollars, because the next car you buy will have to a cash purchase. What I mean is that cash sometimes helps, but it doesn’t do miracles.

The biggest factor in getting a loan is the basis of your credit and job history, but if you’re in a scenario where the bank is between “yes” versus “no” then investing some of your own money might make the difference. From the lenders point of view, a customer will be a lot less likely to walk away from a loan if they have something of their own invested.

5. Trade Title

Obviously not every person buying a car will be trading in their old vehicle, but in the chance that you do have a trade in, it is very important to bring the title and other important documents. Don’t worry, if your old car still has a lien on it then you won’t have the title, but you can still plan to trade it in. A lot of times, dealers will be willing to pay off your old loan just to get you into a newer vehicle. Some scenarios are easier than others, but anything might be possible.

By remembering all of these documents, I can guarantee that your purchase will go much smoother than if you go empty handed. Being prepared sets a good example and it will play a vital role in your next vehicle purchase.
