Steampunk Canada, which Combines Victorian Era Innovations with Modern Day Technology, Partners with UsedOttawa.com and Usedeverywhere.com to Give Old Tech and Fashion New Life

Ottawa, ON. – Feb.2, 2012

UsedOttawa.com, and the UsedEverywhere.com network of Canadian online classified sites is proud to be considered Canada’s official ‘Steampunk Trading Post’. The Steampunk community, which brings together people who love mixing the Victorian era with futuristic innovations, has gravitated to UsedEverywhere.com sites because ‘Steampunkers’ are constantly searching for old (used) items to create new inventions and outfits.

UsedEverywhere.com is installing a Steampunk category on the main page of all local city sites across Canada and The U.K.

“Our new UsedEverywhere.com Steampunk category is a place where people can post items that fit into the Victoriana look and list things that people can use to build their steampunk costumes and devices,” says Jordan Kent-Baas, UsedOttawa.com Marketing coordinator. “Old clocks, radios, LED lights, fabric, vintage boots, suits, pocket watches, you name it, all these things can be posted for steampunkers to fish through for their next treasure, or for the parts that will eventually be assembled into a new contraption.”

The Steampunk movement is based on the era when steam power was widely used (Victorian era in Britain or the American “Wild West”). It incorporates elements of science fiction and fantasy. Works of Steampunk feature futuristic innovations based on a Victorian perspective on tech, fashion, culture, architectural style and art. It includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or contemporary authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld and China Mieville.

It’s not unusual to see women in full Victorian skirts and bustle, sporting a copper pipe ray-gun with a brass jet pack. The movement has witnessed a resurgence thanks in part to the mainstream success of the recent Sherlock Holmes films.

Ottawa, ON. – January 24, 2012

UsedOttawa.com is proud to offer a dedicated online destination to help ‘highJinx Ottawa’ generate donations of used furniture from the UsedOttawa community. UsedOttawa users are encouraged to post items for sale and earmark the proceeds to highJinx Ottawa’s initiatives which help the homeless and vulnerable (including seniors and the working poor).

The idea is a win-win for Ottawa residents who can clear out their basements and garages by selling used things they no longer need with the proceeds of these sales going to a good cause. UsedOttawa users can also donate used furniture directly to highJinx and these items will be utilized to help furnish homes for the homeless. Details on how to participate are posted on highJinx’s dedicated page on UsedOttawa.com: http://highjinx.usedottawa.com/

“Our users are historically very active in their local communities so this is an excellent fit for us to work with an organization that transforms other people’s used goods into useful items that can change lives,” says Jordan Kent-Baas UsedOttawa.com Marketing Coordinator. “We have an Ottawa Community Angel program in place where our local staff seeks out organizations like highJinx for us to support.”

Leigh Reid and Karen Nielsen who opened the highJinx Ottawa store in early 2011 have helped to facilitate furnished housing for 90 Ottawa residents and counting. They use the proceeds from selling donated furniture and they refurbish furniture to create living spaces for those in need.

“Our goal is to collect used items and reinvent them into the key pieces that make a house a home,” says Leigh Reid co-founder of High Jinx Ottawa. “Everything we collect is sold at our local retail location with the net profits going directly to housing the homeless in Ottawa.”

highJinx also assists families with the transition of downsizing and helps people find hidden gems in their basements and garages so these items can be used to raise funds for their homeless initiatives.

For more information please visit highJinx’s page on UsedOttawa.com: http://highjinx.usedottawa.com/ and please see this blog post from UsedOttawa’s Jordan Kent-Bass: http://www.usedeverywhere.com/highjinx-in-ottawa-it-takes-2-women-to-raise-a-village/ .

It’s part of a new ‘Social Commerce’ trend that will offer new income opportunities in 2012.

UsedEverywhere.com and its network of local Canadian sites is encouraging business minded Canadians to consider becoming micro-entrepreneurs in 2012 to earn additional income.
UsedEverywhere offers users quick, easy and free-of-charge access to its active and very social community of thousands of local and national buyers and sellers giving micro-entrepreneurs a head start. More than 90% of the listings on UsedEverywhere are from private users, with many of them having small home-based or micro-businesses.

“Many people may not realize how simple it is to generate additional income as a micro-entrepreneur online,” says Tish Hill, General Manager of UsedEverywhere.com. “For those looking to enter the online classified space and start a home business, we provide easy to use listing tools to get new micro-entrepreneurs started in a community of tens of thousands of like minded buyers and sellers.”

Each month UsedEverywhere’s network of Canadian sites has $3 Billion worth of goods listed and it’s a vibrant marketplace for micro-businesses to create interest, gain a following and generate sales.

Micro-Entrepreneurship will be a topic of discussion at The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland as part of their annual meeting January 25-29, 2012. The theme of this year’s meeting is “The Great Transformation” and it will be divided into four topics. One will focus on new models for job creation around the world. Prof. Klaus Schwab (WEF Founder) suggests micro-entrepreneurship will play a critical role creating much needed jobs.

“The key to mitigating a catastrophic situation is to provide young people with the capability to create their own jobs: to move from the pure concept of unemployment to the concept of micro-entrepreneurship,” says Schwab.

UsedEverywhere.com is seeing a spike in snow blower ads this month. Snow blowers are one of the most popular winter items and when the ads are posted they often lead to a flurry of calls from potential buyers who want a find great deal on a must-have item for Canadian homeowners.

Since September, ads for snow blowers on UsedEverywhere’s network of Canadian sites have tripled with close to 500 used snow blowers up for grabs on any given day in December. Ads for winter items traditionally peak in January with over 3200 winter related ads last January, but December is the biggest month for snow blowers.

“We see a tremendous demand for snow blowers every year in December,” says Tish Hill General Manager of UsedEverywhere.com. “When the snow starts to fall people start thinking about how they will keep their driveways clear. Snow blowers are very expensive new but you can find good working used snow blowers at huge discounts on our sites.”

Those who use winter snow removal services or head south during the cold months are turning to UsedEverywhere sites to unload their sought-after snow blowers and earn some extra money in the process. Canadians are looking to purchase used snow blowers that not only save them money, but also save their backs from the pain of shoveling heavy snow.

Brand new snow blowers can cost up to $2,500 while many used snow blowers are available on UsedEverywhere.com sites for less than $200. Prices range from $80 and up depending on the age of the snow blower and its features.

UsedHalifax and UsedPEI Connect with Viewers on the Swap Shop Show, Helping
Maritimers Find Great Deals on Used Stuff in Their Own Neighbourhoods

Halifax, N.S. – Dec.6, 2011

UsedEverywhere.com, the Canadian owned and operated leader in local online classifieds, is proud to
announce its title sponsorship of the Swap Shop television show. The show links the traditional person-to-person marketplace with online classifieds by connecting Maritimers over the phone and over the internet
to exchange items for sale.

Swap Shop is a weekly “garage sale” live on EastLink Television every Wednesday night at 7:00 pm.
It gives viewers a chance to buy items live on the air and to offer items for sale. The show has recently
gone from phone-in only, to Swap Shop 2.0, by adding online segments that include featured items from
UsedHalifax.com and UsedPEI.com.

“Television is still a top medium for entertainment and information in most peoples’ lives,” says Tish Hill,
UsedEverywhere.com General Manager. “We believe helping Maritimers make an initial connection
over the airwaves is a great way to facilitate transactions between buyers and sellers on the internet.
For viewers to see items that are available on UsedHalifax and UsedPEI on TV introduces a whole new
audience to the opportunities online classifieds offer Maritimers.”

UsedEverywhere.com is the largest Canadian-owned online classified network, with sites in 50 cities
across Canada. Each city site has its own community and online brand. UsedPEI.com is one of
UsedEverywhere’s flagship sites with over 11,000 ads posted at any given time. Its popularity has also fed the growth of nearby sites such as UsedHalifax.com – an up and coming site in the UsedEverywhere network.

“We expect more and more Haligonians to continue embracing UsedHalifax because it’s local, it’s community based,
and it’s 100 percent Canadian,” says Hill.

UsedEverywhere.com, a global leader in Social Commerce and Online Classifieds, is offering up ecommerce security tips to help shoppers get great deals while holiday shopping without becoming victims of scams in the process. False listings, identity theft (phishing), fraud and theft are as prevalent online as on the streets, but taking common sense precautions can eliminate much of the risk.

Nov.22, 2011

Victoria, B.C. – With over one billion dollars in online sales last year Cyber Monday surpassed Black Friday as the highest one day volume for holiday shopping, re-confirming that buying gifts online has gone mainstream. One third of North American shoppers say they plan to do part of their holiday shopping on the Internet this year. With this in mind UsedEverywhere.com is offering steps that consumers can take to protect themselves especially for doing transactions on online classifieds.

Trust Your Instincts: First and foremost, the adage “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” definitely applies to ecommerce. Your instincts are often the best indicator if something is amiss. Follow your gut feeling and use common sense.

Report Abuse and Suspicious Looking Postings: If you feel that an ad or a posting looks suspicious report it. Many sites, especially online classifieds and ecommerce sites have ‘report abuse’ or ‘feedback’ links, use those to alert authorities. Also contact local better business bureaus and police if you feel local action can be taken.

Research The Item: Research the item you are planning on buying beforehand so that you know what you are buying, how much it should cost, and what shape it should be in.

Find Promo Codes Before Buying: Do a Google search for the name of the product you are buying and add the words ‘coupon code’ or ‘promo code’ to the search to find any discounts that may be available for that product before you make a purchase.

Never Give Out Personal Information: Beyond your phone number or email (if necessary to contact sellers on online classifieds), never give out any personal information such as your social security (social insurance – in Canada) number, date of birth, banking information, your address and so on. Unless you are buying from a mainstream retail site don’t share your credit card information.

Talk on the Phone: While email may be the most convenient, especially for initiating transactions, when possible try to speak over the phone before agreeing to a transaction or agreeing to meet if it is a local online classified transaction. If they refuse, excuses are often very revealing. Again, go with your gut.

Deal Only in Cash: For online classified purchases; never wire money, send advance payments, or use your credit card. This also helps you to avoid any deals done through mail – a notorious method for running scams.

Keep it Local: You can reduce your risk by keeping all transactions local. This also eliminates the need to use anything other than cash when buying or selling.

Inspect Before You Buy: Never buy something that you can’t check out in-person first – not only can you assess its quality for yourself, but you can meet the seller in-person.

Meet in Public: For online classified transactions, always meet to exchange in a public place and bring a friend. This protects you by not revealing your address and makes it less likely that someone will try to scam you.

Don’t Go To The Car: Do not accompany a person to their car for any reason, and, of course, do not let them go to the car with items in hand if they haven’t paid for them yet.

Ask Questions: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask sellers why they are selling their item and about its condition. And sellers – don’t be afraid to ask buyers what their intentions are. If something sounds shady, remember you don’t owe anyone anything and you can always back out of a transaction before any money is exchanged.

Keep Records: Especially if you buy and sell often – keep some sort of record of what you have bought and/or sold, where you met, and who you bought from or sold to.

Many of the tips above are focused on conducting safe online classified transactions but many can also apply to all of your online holiday shopping. The most important tip is: only proceed with a transaction if you are 100 percent comfortable. As a rule your instincts are your best protection.

alternatives to pricey Halloween costumes for trick or treating and Halloween parties. Parents, students

time,” says Tish Hill General Manager of UsedEverywhere.com. “They can also offset the cost by putting
last year’s costume up for sale.”

The UsedEverywhere.com team checked for Halloween listings on UsedOttawa.com (there are
similar listings on all of the UsedEverywhere local city sites including UsedWinnipeg, UsedVictoria and

convening in Toronto at BlissdomCanada.com. Attendees and Speakers will work together to
explore and advance the influence of Canadian women in the Social Media world.

Victoria, B.C. – Oct. 13, 2011

UsedEverywhere.com will be appearing with reps from their sites across the country at the Blissdom
Canada 2011 conference from October 13-15 at Toronto’s Hilton Hotel to share and promote Social
Commerce - the evolution of Social Media in the online business world.

UsedEverywhere.com has quickly become a global advocate and leader in the Social Commerce
movement and Blissdom is an ideal event for sharing this vision. UsedEverywhere’s network of 50
Canadian online classified sites has evolved from a traditional to social.

The Used sites include apps for buying and selling used goods on tablets and smartphones, along with
Facebook and Twitter community interaction and daily online deals for the UsedEverywhere community to
obtain great savings from businesses in their local cities.

“Social Media is evolving into a powerful tool that helps consumers and businesses interact more
efficiently,” says Tish Hill, UsedEverywhere.com General Manager. “Consumers can now have personal
interactions in the environment where they are most comfortable, like sharing links and posting items from
our Used sites on Facebook.”

The women of UsedEverywhere.com will be well represented at this year’s Blissdom arriving in Toronto
from Victoria/Montreal, Winnipeg, London and Ottawa. The UsedEverywhere team will attend networking and
speaker events and will be hosting a networking dinner. They will also show off some of the cool and
unique used stuff Canadians can find online by outfitting the UsedEverywhere booth with couches and
decor from “Used” sites and even wearing clothes, jewelry and purses from the sites.
