OK, I am a man of honesty and If I said I am going to write in mid-June, I will.

But, I am quite reluctant to write a post.

Few days ago, I drafted a post titled "Summer holiday is incomplete without...", but my mind wandered off somewhere and I didn't publish it.

Don't put the blame on me (put it on Akon :p)! The room temperature and noise distraction affects attention span. Duh! It's hard to concentrate in this badly ventilated office.

Anyway, leave some comment about how you're spending your summer; I will include them and mention your id/name, or whatever.

Note to myself: to draw a comic stick figure sitting in a hot office, and upload it.

I am sorry, but the exam period has started and the laws of physics just got me -- I can never be at two places at once.

But I will be writing things starting mid-June, and you can either check it out during summer or read it when the school starts.

Global Village sneak peek spoiler

A lot of people have been asking me about the Global VIllage. So I'm writing about it. It's just a rough spoiler, and some of it might be false. So, don't scold me!

WHEN: 4th of JUNE, 10 AM - 18 PM (APPROXIMATELY)
WHERE: U2 BUILDING, 01 FLOOR
WITH WHOM: INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL FOR YOUTH AND CHILDREN
WHO: Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Russia, India, Turkey and Columbia so far. And probably, a video clip of ERASMUS students.
WHAT: TABLE, PRESENTATION, GAME AND DISCUSSION

TABLE: Each country has a table of their own where they put traditional food, souvenirs, pictures etc.
PRESENTATION: Every country presents at certain hours to all the audience, e.g. Turkey at 10 am. The presentation is 30 minutes long.
GAME: Then they organize games and quizzes with prize.
DISCUSSION: At the end, there will be a huge discussion between visitors and the representatives.

I have just read from our Trainees in Zlin blog that on May 16th there's a shopping center opening.

Too bad I can't attend, I would enjoy all these things!

Things I didn't know: Part 4 "Plug it Cable"

Tried connecting to wireless from your dorm and the network admin allegedly suspended your wireless ID?

You can still connect through cable free.

Maybe you noticed them, the cable inputs in the library, and the university hall etc.

1) Plug the cable

2) Look at the input socket! There should be some numbers. They are the address you must insert in your connection settings.

3) put the:
a) IP address,
b) Mask,
c) Gateway and
d) DNS into your LAN connection settings.

Voila!

Well, here's something fancy I found: this easy nursery rhyme will cover some of your scores in the test. Muhahaha

Read these! They have nice examples. Iamb (I-amb), Trochee (Tro-kee), Anapest (A-na-pest), Dactyl (means "finger") and Spondee.

Things I didn't know: Part 3 "Wireless connection in Dormitory"

Now this one is a little bit off the line. I alone have this service, and I hadn't asked for it, it just spontaneously came to me. Yes, I can connect to wireless network right from my dormitory room! How? I don't know how. But try it out, it may work.

a) Register the UTB-Student wireless network using your Novell network ID and password.
b) Put the setting to automatically connect every time you are in the signal range.
c) Seat yourself at the Wireless network places and go wireless.
d) Shut down your PC (hopefully laptop)
e) Go to your room and turn it on. If you're lucky, it should still get the signal.

If you live in one of these dorms, you can at least save the cable connection fee!

You can have tons of information about scholarships, internships about studying abroad sent to your e-mail address. All you have to do is ask. There is a place where universities announce their scholarship to each other. Ms.Miroslava Cedidlova forwards them in a newsletter to every students who subscribed.

Here is how to do it:

Include your name (jmeno)
Surname (prijmeni)
Academic department (fakultu)
Year (rocnik)
Field of study (studijni obor)

You will receive tons of information about Programs, Summer courses and Scholarships offered from USA, Germany, UK and so on. Some of them come in Czech but they are pretty basic and obvious.

Things I didn't know: Part 1 "Using Scanner"

Editorial note: Because of some people's complaint, I change the title of the series into
"Things I didn't know" from "Things you didn't know".

Using Scanner

Well, this one is just something I noticed accidentally. I needed a scanner and I never thought I could find one.

But all the computer rooms (U2, library and u5) had 4-8 PCs marked SCAN on their monitors.

So, here's how you can use the scanner -- free.

You go to the Xerox push on the scan button (see the picture below)

2. Choose the PC you're sitting on. (for example, SCAN2) and scan your paper by
pressing Start (the big green button).

3. Sit on the PC with SCAN2 note on it.

4. Log in.

5. Open ScanRouter V2 Link (Start=Programs=DeskTopBinder V2) and you will see
the scanned paper.

6. Save it, and mission accomplished!

Tip: This is the image I scanned in Library. The stick figure is doing the robo dance!

How to memorize State capitols?

Why do you need to know the capitols of the U.S. states? There's almost 50 of them. Well, you don't really have to know it. I bet even the Americans themselves don't know all the capitols.

But here are some of the reasons:

You are enrolled in American Studies course, (where you have to learn the capitols of the states)
You aren’t enrolled in course, but you think you will be in “Who wants to be Millionaire?” one day, and you will need these.
You must know them in order to impress people. (We are livin' in Amerika! Coca-Cola, Wonderbra! :P)

Whatever it is, I found a very easy way to memorize all those names in 1 hour.

Ok, enough hysteria. Barbora just told me that there is going to be an info meeting on "Wednesday (16th April), at 19:30, in "Devítka" (I guess you know where it is, opposite to Prior)".

Global village is coming to town

There are 245 countries in the world, and two types of people.

Citizens of well-developed countries. Their country exports entertainment to the world and it helps them spread their culture, e.g. USA, Russia, UK etc.
Citizens in other countries. They feel their contributions are missing. So, they wish to exhibit their cultures to the world, “Our culture should add up to the globalization, too!”, e.g. Czech Republic, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Mongolia, etc.

If you’re #1, you have to know A LOT to fit in this Internet roaming, jet plane flying world,. If you’re the second type, #2, you may want to show your country to the world, screaming “I’m from (your country here)”.

Whichever of the above you’re trying to accomplish, I have a good news – Global Village. This is a multi-culture festival, which will be held this summer in the University Building U2.

Barbora, an AIESECer who is part of the team preparing this event asked me to post about it on the blog. “A lot of foreign people gather in Zlin to present their country to the visitors of this event. They offer samples of their traditional meal, teach the visitors words from their language or even traditional dances” she said.

Even for bystanders, who don’t want to go up and represent their country, they are saving money by watching it. Because they get to know and experience culture shock free in Global Village, instead of traveling there and paying for loads of money (9,999€).

If you like free things by the way, this is another reason you should join, I’d say. You could probably taste many types of foods free such as:

Fried meat, sweets, pancakes, biscuits, cookies.

Also I’ve read about Global Village in Dubai, where people buy many fancy foreign things, such as:

Traditional clothes, jewelleries, souvenirs, handcrafts.

I list all the other things I found interesting below:

The organization team pays for your expenses, and you can buy anything you want to present your country.
You can be as creative as you want to represent you country, e.g. Powerpoint presentation, songs, teaching traditional dance, basic vocabulary etc.
There is “Zlin dog” students film festival after it, jackpot!
Then, all the students go after-party!

Jumper 2: Abyss and caves

Hey studs,

Sorry for not posting for awhile. I guess I should hold your thirst by saying I'm studying to make the blog better.

Anyhoo, I have the slideshow out of our trip to Moravian Karst, specifically Macocha Abyss and Punkva caves.

Many Bachelor's student were disappointed they missed the trip. For me, I was fortunate to hear from some PhD students that the trip was free of charge the day before, and upon receiving an invitation letter from Ms.Zarubova, I replied.

So the tip of the day is to always have open ears.

You'll find something later.

Friday Party

Loud trembling noise shook the whole dormitory.

BANG! BANG! BOOM! CHIKA!

What the hell?

Gotta investigate.

The party throwers had nice collection of beer pads.



I asked Dan and Andrea, the party hosts about what this party was for. "It's Friday and we decided to and that's it." they said.

To summarize, If you're in a party, don't drink juice, milk,  or water -- they're all mixed with alcohol. You'll end up getting even more drunk than people chugging beer.

AIESEC wants us to work abroad!

On 12th of March, Wednesday evening, I walked up to the tables on the first floor to relax after a long lecture. There I found an ad flyer by AIESEC saying "Neschovavej se!", meaning "Don't hide!". It was about traineeships, internships UTB students can have, and it was due in few minutes . So I went there, and took this picture!

There were 7 students who came for the ad, including me, 3 AIESEC members, and 3 trainees from abroad. The presentation was unfortunately in Czech, and I didn't understand most of what's being said. But here's what really sounds cool.

"AIESEC offers you opportunities to improve your foreign language skills, learn foreign culture and get hands-on experience on " says Zdenek, AIESEC member, who started the presentation. "Also you will attend preparation seminar for the internship from AIESEC"

I liked the idea, but it said it was for the 3rd year students and above. "There are four kind of internships/traineeships you can choose," said Lenka, another AIESEC presenter, "Management Traineeships, Technical Traineeships, Developmental Traineeships and Educational Traineeships".

Then, I started feeling drowsy for a few minutes because I didn't understand it. After awhile, Cigdem, a trainee from Turkey spoke about her experience. She said Turkish people didn't drink fizzy water, which was interesting.

Then spoke Eduardo from Columbia -- he's probably learning quite good Czech during his intern, as he answered one student's question in Czech. One thing I found interesting was that Colombians are happier than Czechs -- because of the sunnier weather.

Then a Czech guy, Lukas, talked about his internship experience in Turkey last year, but unfortunately he spoke in Czech so I can't recall anything he said.

Finally, there came Snake (Yes, it's his name) from China, who made a PowerPoint presentation with him to show his cultural shocks. He showed us that he found it hard to eat with spoon and fork, rather than chopsticks.
After the presentation, we discussed about internships. I asked whether I would qualify for an internship, but found out I could if I'm an AIESEC member. Piece of cake! I am going to meet them on Monday, and join them.

Oh, I forgot I'm giving out information to you. If you want to work abroad through AIESEC, you have to decide immediately. The deadline's coming soon!

Jump from Zlin to Prague

Although the movie Jumper was bit disappointing, it doesn't mean you can't travel around easily -- like Christen Haydensen.

Why do you need to jump? Summer's coming soon, and you should plan where to spend your holiday early.

The distance between Zlin and Prague being 323km, you either can take bus or train (don't even think about walking!) . And you'll spend about 7 hours to "jump" so arrange your time!

So, on with the jumping, click here and jump to Prague.
