David Wallace, MD, PGY-V is spending his research year in the departmental neurosciences lab run by Naomi Sayre, PhD. They are working on a novel antibody to help inhibit inflammation and cellular damage to the central nervous system after trauma. This treatment may one day help patients recover from spinal cord injury.
'Understanding the injury pathways at a cellular level has really changed the way I think about the spinal cord injury and stroke that we see in our patients. This year in the lab will help me be a better doctor for the people we treat,’ says Dr. Wallace of his experience.

Hudson Lockhart was diagnosed with sagittal craniosynostoses during his two-month checkup. Alana Lockhart, Hudson’s mother, and the rest of his family decided to see David F. Jimenez, MD, FACS, to discuss treatment options.
“Receiving the diagnosis was one of the scariest things that ever happened to us,” Alana told us. “But Dr. Jimenez made us feel comfortable. Our first appointment gave us peace of mind.”
After his surgery, Hudson was put under the care of Darren J. Poidevin, CPO, LPO, the director of the Cranial Remolding Program.

“Darren is so great with Hudson. He makes sure we understand everything and makes the whole process simple. Hudson is adjusting so well to the [orthosis].”
We are pleased to report that Hudson is doing well and his family is very pleased with the results. Alana tells us that he is happy, healthy, and “hitting all his milestones.”

Derrick Sun, MD, recently presented a lecture to our residents in which he discussed clinical cases illustrating different types of upper cervical spine trauma as well as anatomy and radiology relevant to the upper cervical spine.
After Dr. Sun’s lecture, the residents went to the cadaver lab to practice the placement of C2 pedicle screws, C1 lateral mass screws, C1-2 transarticular screws, and occipital plates using anatomical landmarks and fluoroscopic guidance. These procedures are used to stabilize someone with upper cervical trauma or atlanto-occipital dissociation (a condition where severe trauma causes the base of skull to be separated from the top of the cervical spine).

Veronica Cuevas' Story

Veronica Cuevas was at a trampoline park with her friends when she did a back flip and landed on her feet. Immediately, she knew something was wrong.
“I had a sharp pain on the base of my head. I couldn't hear. I couldn't walk to get water or anything. It was the worst pain I felt in my life.”
When the pain persisted, Veronica decided to go to an ER in Corpus Christi. A CT scan revealed that there was blood in her brain. Her doctors determined that she had an aneurysm. Because they were unable to treat her, Veronica was airlifted to UHS. Once she arrived, Lee A. Birnbaum, MD, treated her aneurysm using endovascular coiling. She was then placed under the care of Shaheryar Hafeez, MD, Ali Seifi, MD, FACP, and the neurocritical care team.

“I’m very grateful to them,” Veronica told us. “They are taking good care of me."

Christian's Story

Earlier this year, Christian Patrick Ehrhard suffered a major stroke while getting ready for work in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was rushed to San Antonio, where he underwent an emergency thrombectomy for an occlusion of his internal carotid artery, one of the main vessels supplying blood to his brain. This procedure, in which a microcatheter (a small tube) and a stent was used to remove a clot through accessing the arteries in his brain, was performed at University Hospital, a Comprehensive Stroke Center staffed round-the-clock by a team of UT Medicine Stroke Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, and Neurointensivists. He later underwent a hemicraniectomy in which part of his skull was removed to reduce the pressure placed on his brain due to swelling from the stroke. Christian subsequently returned to the hospital so he could undergo skull replacement surgery.

Last week, during a follow-up appointment, we got a chance to visit with Christian and his family to see how they were doing. Christian’s wife told us that she was pleased with the outcomes of both surgeries.
“Physically, you wouldn't even know he had a stroke,” she told us. “Dr. Grandhi did a great job with the surgery and his continued care.”
Although Christian initially had trouble speaking after his first surgery, speech therapy has improved his communication.
We are pleased to see how far Christian has come and wish him well during his recovery.

“From the moment we met Dr. Grandhi, we knew he was great,” Oralia told us. “He was one of the best doctors I’ve ever had. He was very helpful. He did everything well and explained each procedure that he performed.”
Oralia underwent a cerebral angiogram and subsequently was taken to the operating room where her ruptured aneurysm was clipped. She remained in the NeuroICU at University Hospital, initially under the care of Dr. Shaheryar Hafeez, where she experienced what she described as “the best care” she ever had.

“He spent so much time with me and made sure everything was ok. Our family loves him.”

During a recent follow-up appointment with Dr. Jimenez, we got a chance to talk to Josey’s family about what life was like after surgery. His parents told us that Dr. Jimenez did “amazing work;” Josey was able to perform well in school and enjoy athletic activities, like playing sports.
We received this wonderful testimony from the father of a recent patient: "On December 27, 2016, our son [Andrew Demidio] was emergency airlifted to [UHS] for the emergency treatment of a brain abscess. On December 28th, the Surgery team led by neurosurgeon Dr. Ramesh Grandhi successfully performed a 7 hour surgery. During this most difficult ordeal, Dr. Grandhi not only demonstrated his extraordinary surgical expertise, but demonstrated being an outstanding human being to our family. He communicated with us at every turn and showed great compassion and understanding for what our family was going through. He did what he could to relieve our fears and concerns by explaining details as they arose. He was very accessible and reachable, actually giving us his phone number. Now that our son is in his 5th month of post-surgical recovery and has returned to his normal self, Dr. Grandhi remains a friend to our family. He continues to be there at every turn to care for our son and to answer all of our questions and concerns. This man is a truly remarkable person, a truly extraordinary surgeon, and is truly a gift from God. With great appreciation and gratitude, Sincerely, Dr. Robert D’Emidio"
