			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I discovered <a title="Ubuntu: I in You and You in Me  by Michael Battle" href="http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Ubuntu/Battle-Michael/e/9781596271111/?itm=1" target="_blank">this</a> while searching for books about the Ubuntu operating system, which I recently installed on my netbook for the simple challenge of learning something new and because, well, I don&#8217;t like Windows&#8230;</p>
<blockquote><p><em>A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed&#8230;</em></p>
<p><em>Ubuntu is an African way of seeing self-identity formed through community. This is a difficult worldview for many Western people, who understand self as over, against, or in competition with others.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Certainly not what I was looking for, but a totally welcome non-coincidence.</p>
<p>But still, I&#8217;d really like to know why Jaunty Jackalope won&#8217;t recognize the Ethernet and wireless devices on my new Asus 1005HA. I&#8217;ll keep looking.</p>

<p>The camera should not be a crutch!</p>
<p><strong>Know the process. What makes a good photo?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>shutter speed: how long the shutter is open</li>
<li>ISO: film speed
<ul>
<li>the lower the number, the more light is required to hit the film</li>
<li>raising ISO can create digital noise (grain)</li>
<li>stick with 100 or 200</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>aperature: size of lens opening
<ul>
<li>wides aperature (lower number) lets in more light</li>
<li>wide aperature=narrow depth of field</li>
<li>depth of field helps to isolate the subject</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>shooting in RAW format allows more control over the image post-processing
<ul>
<li>captures all light that hits the sensor</li>
<li>photo processing software allows user to control color, contrast, etc.</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Shooting in JPG leaves interpretation of the scene to the camera</p>
<p><strong>Know the camera</strong></p>

<li>focus points

<li>aim for center point, then recompose to rule of thirds</li>

<li>move closer to the subject as needed to fill the frame</li>

<p><strong>Know the light</strong></p>

<li>if available light is hard to balance, convert to black and white</li>
<li>natural light is great for portraits</li>
<li>first and last few hours of sunlight are good for photos

<li>whenever possible, avoid the on-camera flash</li>
<li>use flash for fill when subject is shadowed</li>
