By Alex Meyer:

Like last weekend only two of us headed down to this weekend’s MTB race. Sam Dries and I left Madison on Friday afternoon and got to Columbia, MO about 11:30. We again stayed in a host house with the president of the Mizzou Cycling Club. After hanging out with our hosts for a bit we went to bed.

Saturday morning we woke up early and got breakfast at IHOP… They have unlimited pancakes. Well played IHOP well played. We got to the race about an hour and a half early got a pre ride lap in and got to the line. I went first is the A’s. There were 20 of us in one of the more competitive fields of the year. After a good start and a trouble free race I came in 5th not too far behind some really fast guys. Then Sam went in the B’s and killed it. He was leading the race when he double flatted and had to drop out…

Like last week Saturday night was awesome.

Sunday we woke up shortly before race start and rushed over, both of us sporting sharpie tattoos from the night before. I went first in the A’s again in a super strong field. I had a great start and was riding really well. On the last lap I had 4th locked up and not going anywhere.

And I flatted, then threw my bike into the woods in anger.

I walked down to the finish and managed to finish fifth. Sam went to town on the B’s field leading the race from the start of the second lap to the finish.

· Key points

o IHOP and Olive Garden are the official feeding troughs of UW Cycling

§ Unlimited pasta and unlimited pancakes enough said

o The entirety of Australia is disappointed in Tim Norris for not pedaling hard enough

§ Confused? Come and race already and you’ll understand

o Smitty from Ripon is a crazy mo fo

Mountain Bike Race Report from Purdue University: September 30-October 2, 2011

By Joe Maloney

This past weekend Skip and I traveled to Purdue University for another weekend of MTBs. The Drive felt incredibly short after having a few long drives in the weeks before. We arrived in Purdue around 9 on Friday night at our host house, the Purdue cycling club house.

We woke up on Saturday morning and drove across town to the course located just off campus near their tennis complex. The course was a shorter 4 mile loop which after starting in an open but bumpy field found its way into some tight single track in the woods. The first mile was somewhat open with a mix of tight 180 degree corners and shallow fast corners. The course then made its way toward a creek and began twisting and turning on itself unlike anything i had ever ridden. The remaining 3 or so miles were just hairpin after tight hairpin as the trail squeezed 3 miles out of what must of been less than an acre of woods. Overall the course was difficult and restrictive with very few places to pass and very few opportunities to make up time which dictated the racing. Off the line I got the hole shot and rocketed with Eric smith and Josh Johnson (a cat 1 MTBer from Marian) on my wheel. just at the end of the first straight was a deep water puddle, so the second row of racers (including skip) allowed a gap to form to keep from getting wet. We went into the woods with myself leading Johnson and Smith. Skip was back in about 9th or 10th in a field of 12, which is pretty deep for a collegiate MTB race. After the first few mile I crashed and messed up my chain which cost me the lead and about 30 second. I was able to slot in just before the 4th place rider and quickly began to pull away from him in an effort to catch the leaders again. It proved to be too much however, but I was able to place second after Smith flatted...again. Skip made a few passes and ended the day in 8th place, not bad for a bum knee and being a roadie and all.

Saturday night was awesome.

Sunday's short track course was similar to last years Cyclocross regional's course with a few obstacles added to make it more of a STXC type course. It featured 2 hard climbs and some difficult turns, but you could also see the entire course from the start line, making it a perfect spectator course. The race began at the top of the hill and quickly funneled into a tricky off-camber corner which had to be ridden single file. I tried to get the hole shot as I knew it would be important, but Smith beat me to it. He seriously took off and quickly gaped everyone after that corner. I gave chase but just didn't have the lags as Josh and Cody (Lindenwood) came around me and took up the pace. I had a small crash after which put me out of contention. I slipped back to forth in front of Alder Martz (Marian) and Skip. Skip battled to stay with Alder but wasn't able to close the gap when Alder made an attack to catch me about half through. Alder and I battled, I mean really battled each other for the next few laps. Elbows were thrown and a lot of positioning made it a difficult battle, but in the end I was able to edge him out. The course really lent itself to contact racing. Positioning was really important because some sections were single file and you really needed every second on the tight and short course. I ended up 4th and skip finished in 6th.

So what did we learn?

-The Purdue XC course isn't very good, even Purdue knew it.

-Regionals will be a lot of fun because the Purdue guys and Lindenwood will be there.

-I have a nice butt (says a guy while I was walking home from the store)

-Skip can be a total jerk when he goes to McDonalds

-Everybody hates Nebraska, even Purdue football fans.

-If you friend isn't doing so well, don't take him to Panda Express, help him out.

-Everybody hates Cornelius

-Lindenwood and Purdue Cycling know how to heckle.

Published: Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Updated: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 19:09

This past weekend the UW Cycling mountain bike squad traveled to Houghton, Michigan for the Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference (MWCCC) race hosted by Michigan Tech. The race venue included the world famous Copper Harbor Trail system and some amazing local trails just off campus. The perfect weather the week before made for the absolute finest conditions on the trails.

Three of UW's finest riders made the trip: Sam Dries, Alex ‘Skip' Meyer, and Joe Maloney.

The first event on Saturday was the Cross Country race. XC is a test of endurance with races ranging from eight to 24 miles across all types of terrain. In the Men's C event, Dries led from start to finish after an amazing start on his single-speed, fully rigid bike.

Maloney also had good luck winning the Men's A event after he and Meyer started the race going first and second into the woods. Meyer suffered a mechanical incident after the two had been leading for the first half of lap one of three. He limped in for a solid sixth place finish.

Sunday's short track race was held near the campus on some local trails. Short track is a condensed version of cross country. It is held over similar terrain, but the racing is high intensity as the race is only 25 minutes long at the most. The laps are only about a mile long, so spectating is a lot of fun as racers put everything on the line. Once again, Dries dominated the Men's C event leading from start to finish winning by a healthy margin of 30 seconds.

In the Men's A race, Meyer and Maloney went second and third into the forest setting up a perfect one-two punch. Meyer suffered some more bad luck when he knee jabbed a tree (the tree was okay) in the first lap, making it a two man race between Maloney and a Ripon College rider, Eric Smith. Smith also suffered a crash with two laps to go allowing Maloney to take the win.

The weekend turned out incredibly well, with two riders going two for two for a total of four wins on the weekend. The team will be traveling to Purdue University next weekend to once again represent the Badgers and bring back more glory.

by Joe Maloney

On a wonderful Saturday morning in Houghton, MI I woke up to the sound of my alarm and the bird singing outside around 7am. The temperature was cool but the sun was warm. I decided to lay there and get up slowly as my comrades began to also wake up. We started talking for a few minutes, just talking about the course, the host house we were in and where to eat breakfast. Having yet to open my eyes for the first time I turned to Skip and opened them and saw two human figures, thought nothing of it and closed them again. A few moments later, Skip yelped. “Holy crap there is a guy right there!” This random guy popped up and scattered up the stair out of sight. Then just a few moments later he came hurdling down the stairs again and out the front door, all in the matter of a minute or less. Ah, good morning UW cycling! It’s just another day in the life, living the dream.

This past weekend was the Michigan Tech MTB weekend in Houghton, MI up der in the da U.P. der. We left Madison around 3:30 pm with Sam, Skip and I all really excited about racing. After the long drive all the way up there, we arrived at our host house about an hour after we were expected at 12:30. Everybody was asleep or passed out so we made ourselves at home until one of the girls that lived there helped us out and locked up. The couches were comfortable, and I’m not just saying that because of how tired I was. We said good night and went to bed.

We woke up on Saturday as described above with some random dude that must have made the late night moves on Skip when he came in from a late night of… activities. Needless to say we took it as a good omen and had quite the laugh about it. We went to Perkins for breakfast and made the hour drive up to the world famous Copper Harbor trail system just outside Copper Harbor, MI. The temp was perfect, the trails had the right amount of moisture, and the sun was out. Couldn’t ask for a better day of racing.

First off was the Men’s C’s and great and powerful Sam Dries was ready to not only see what he was made off against the other competitors, but all see if a single speed can climb a mountain. Off the line he took to Skip and I’s advice, be in front. Taking the hole shot allowed Sam to make it into the single track first with a small gap. As told by Sam, he kept in the top few spots the entire race until he got away on the back side of the course getting enough of a gap to emerge out of the forest first by the end of the first and only lap. For those of you counting at home, that’s win #1.

Next was the Men’s A with Alex “Skip” Meyer and myself presenting a big challenge to the other riders. With a field size of 8 riders we decided to come out of the gate like hell hounds and make an early selection. I got the hole shot and Skip was hot on my wheel. We pulled away in the first section of single track and got a sizable gap. Coming into the 2nd section of single track the gap was still big, but getting smaller. I gassed it again trying to pull away more from the pack with skip. Skip crashed on a slick rock and fell back into the pack as I opened up a bigger gap. The rest is history as I soloed the rest of the race conserving about a 2-3 minute gap on 2nd through the race, having only a few ‘minor’ crashes. Skip on the other hand “made a trip to the bike shop” as described to me by Ric the Ripon coach. Literally, he dropped his chain and went to a bike shop to fix it. Luckily, he was allowed to finish, as technically this is illegal. For those of you counting, that’s win #2.

After a fun night of stories and food, we hit the hay, making sure the door was locked and there weren’t any crazy freshman lurking in the shadows waiting to cuddle with Skip. We woke up and made the long 2 minute drive to the short track course. We had a nice chat with a local campus police officer, who found it funny, among other things, that we had so many bikes on our car. He clearly didn’t know about the bike race. We told him about it and he actually made an appearance later that day at the course.

Speaking of the course, it awesome! A short open start, into single track, with a tight 180 corner right before a bridge, followed by more single track. Then there was another double track sections into the final single track section, right before another short double track section into the finish. It was a longer course, but incredibly fun riding. Sam used the Same tactics and lead from start finish, winning by about 30 seconds over a pair of Ripon riders and the rest of the men’s C field. Win #3, and an upgrade for Sam the man. The A’s race was a little more eventful. With a clear strength and team advantage over anyone else, Skip and I decided to play it more tactically. We let one rider beat us into the single track and planed on giving them the old one two. There were two problems. One: Eric Smith beat us into the single track. With 4 wins already, not a good decision. Second issue: 180 degree corners are hard to go fast around. Skip tripped up in the corner, which was made worse when I rear ended him in third place. I was able to get around him, but it was down to 2 men, me and Eric. We battled back and forth on that lap until He got away. Skips lap didn’t go as well. Riding in 4th place now, he was pissed. As I understand it, that tree just looked at him wrong and Skip gave it a judo knee kick killing it instantly. Skip was ok except for a huge bruise, some blood, and what we are calling a gangster lean. Needless to say he limped in for a mid-pack finish. But that tree with think twice next time it thinks about looking at Skip again. In the remaining laps I was able to pass Eric when he suffered a crash and dropped his chain. Not the way I like to win, but a win is a win. Total is now 4.

Overall, it was an amazing weekend. There are way too many stories to tell in just one email so I encourage you to join us next weekend in Purdue. It is shaping up to be even more fun than Michigan Tech with a football game on Saturday night in Purdue. Stay dirty my friends and see you all soon.

Mark Kauzlarich

UW Cycling president Tyler Van De Voort announces a new deal with Trek that will give the Wisconsin club a full sponsorship.

The UW Cycling club (a UW Club sport) announced Tuesday that Trek Bicycle Corporation, based in Waterloo, Wis., has chosen to extend a major sponsorship offer to the team. The team will join Team Radioshack, former home of now-retired Lance Armstrong, and a select few other mountain bike, road and triathlon racing teams as a sponsored Trek Cycling Team.

Trek Stores of Madison have supported the team since fall 2008 with discounts on equipment and bicycles.

"The difference this year is we are dealing with Trek Bicycle Corporation in addition to the Trek Stores," UW Cycling president Tyler Van De Voort said.

The new sponsorship offer expands on the existing partnership by offering bikes to racers and jerseys designed by Trek Bicycle Corporation.

"The goal is to win a national championship," Van De Voort said. "With Trek offering a partnership that would provide their bikes to our riders, our top riders will have professional bikes and even the new riders will have access to professional equipment. This will help us achieve that goal."

The support from Trek staff is overwhelming.

"Dean Gore, director of Global Marketing at Trek Bicycle Corporation, has his heart set on this," Van De Voort said.

"We are trying to recruit top level junior riders in Wisconsin. We want to be known around the country," Van De Voort said of the future of the club.

Top rider Alex Meyer could not keep in his excitement about the new sponsorship deal with Trek.

"Any time you get a partnership this strong from a corporation, there's no way to not be excited," Meyer said.

"Making sure our [top riders] are supported is important, but [moving up] is also something a lot of people have and will strive for," Meyer said.

The sponsorship is slated to go into effect sometime this fall. With races this weekend for mountain biking at Michigan Tech and cyclocross starting in late October as well as the road racing season starting this spring, the team looks forward to this new partnership.

Mountain Bike Race Report: Lindsey Wilson

As told by Joe Maloney
The drive down to Lindsey Wilson is always a pain, and for any of those who have made the drive, you know that the 10 hours in the car are only so bad when compared to the severe lack of sleep you get to make it to the start of the race on Saturday morning. Knowing this, Skip and I decided to leave as early as possible. 1pm on Friday would put us in Kentucky around 10 or 11 that night. I rode my bike over to the car rental place, and filled out the paperwork, noticing the lack of cars in the parking lot. Turns out they were missing quite a few cars, and the rest were in for service. To make a long story short, I sat and waited for 2 hours for a car. After arriving back to the house at almost 3 pm, we packed up quick and hustled out the door. Departure time: 3:30pm. The drive down was filled with two stops, and lots of stories. But for the most part, we drove down and arrived at around midnight. I think we both passed out by 12:05.
After waking up an hour early due to some all too familiar confusion about Central and Eastern Time zones, we ate breakfast and loaded bikes. The good news was that the venue was 5 minutes up the road. In the confused state, we arrived to the venue really early. We figured the mistake out, and decided to go back to hotel so we could both complete a double double for the morning. Turned around and headed back for some Short Track racing action.
The course was wet, and I mean soaked to the bone. The track consisted of short lead out followed by a tight left into a mud puddle and straight up a hill, after reaching the top you took a few quick corners and continued climbing. The second climb was muddy, making it very difficult. A quick 180 turn and you headed down the hill and around a tight corner at high speed. A couple more short corners and you cross the start line. With such a short lap, the Men’s A’s did about 15 laps, and the Men’s B’s did about 10. After a bad start, Joe Maloney worked his way up to the lead group. The pace was incredibly quick and the chase wore him down. After reaching the leading group of 6, Joe was able to hang on for 5th after many attacks were put in. Alex Meyer (Skip) on the other hand had a great start, getting the hole shot. However, he decided that going right was way better than left and took a wrong turn on lap 1. And that is why we pre-ride…wait, we did. He immediately raged up the first climb and was back in the lead at the top of the second climb. But the rage took its toll and he faded back to second and just couldn’t recover. He lost by a few seconds. After some relaxing, some food and getting really excited about trying downhill from watching them race, we headed over to the XC course for a pre-ride. The course was an 8 mile lap consisting of fast and dry double track. It was fast, really fast. There were however three climbs, all proceeded by downhill that would make the bravest of me scramble for more braking power. I am not kidding when I say that the grade on the first two were in the 35%-45% range. The climbs were also extremely steep and technical, littered with roots and rocks. We pre-rode, only notable events was skip banging his knee on the one of many failed attempts to make it up the Lindsey Wilson trail which is famous for being cleared only by 2 people, ever. Needless to say we decided to walk it.
We woke up the morning of the XC race after getting a good night’s sleep to a raining hotel parking lot. Crap. We drove the 30 minutes to the trails and began to kit up as the rain continued to slowly fall. We were in for a dirty race. The trails however held up pretty well. Joe Maloney was able to get the hole shot and got a gap of 30 seconds through the first section of single track. Only one Ripon rider was able to withstand the onslaught of power and rage coming from Maloney’s massive legs. There so was much rage in fact, that Joe dropped his chain. He was passed by the Ripon rider but had enough of a gap on the rest of the field that they never saw him. With a Wisconsin 1,2 looking imminent, Ben (the Ripon rider) and Joe set a quick but consistent pace until the end of lap 2. Ben was able to gap Joe on the Lindsey Wilson trail and Joe was unable to make back the time as the rain began to fall hard. Skip, who learned a big lesson about following the course markings, once again got the hole shot and was first into the woods. He opened up a huge gap much in the same fashion that Joe did, making everyone else bleed from the eyes and contemplate why they even ride bike. Alex described the remainder of the race as such, “After that, the only people I saw were A’s riders that was passing.” Due to the fact that the Men’s B’s started only 10 minutes after the A’s, Skip indeed did pass most of the Men’s A field on a course that suited him to the T.
To summarize, we learned a lot this weekend. First and foremost, we hate Kentucky, which is now to be affectionately known as Sucktucky. It rained both days and the hotels, while nice, were populated by old men doing water exercises like old women and then smoking outside of your room. But despite being in Sucktucky, we still had an excellent time and some solid results
STXC: Men’s A, Joe Maloney – 5th
                Men’s B, Alex Meyer – 2nd
XC: Men’s A, Joe Maloney – 2nd
                Men’s B, Alex Meyer – 1st

AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FILM
ON MIDWEST MID-WINTER TOUR

Ride The Divide will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Barrymore Theatre located at 2090 Atwood Ave. in Madison. Tickets are $15 at the door, and $10 in advance at www.barrymorelive.com. Yellow Jersey Bike Shop of Madison is the presenting sponsor for the event, which is a benefit for the Cycling Team at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Ride The Divide, the award-winning feature-length documentary about the world’s toughest mountain bike race, will continue its 11-city, 11-day Midwest mid-winter tour when it makes its Wisconsin premiere at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison on Friday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m. The film chronicles the story of several mountain bikers who attempt the 2,711-mile race named the Tour Divide along the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains. The movie was named the Best Adventure Film at the 2010 Vail Film Festival.
This film has become an instant cycling classic, and made its television premiere in September on the Documentary Channel. But the Adventure Cycling Association said the film should be seen on the big screen: “The cinematography is stunning!” Added UpaDowna, “Ride The Divide is one of the most inspiring real cycling movies … in a long time.” Epic Riding summed the movie up as follows: “In a word? Fantastic. In more words? Moving, funny, inspiring.”
Ride The Divide embraces the inspiring stories of three of the racers who experience the immense mountain beauty and small-town culture as
they attempt to pedal from Banff, Canada, to a small, dusty crossing on the Mexican border. There’s Mike, a 40-year-old family man who uses this challenge to chart a new course in life; Matthew, a leader in extreme endurance racing who’s competing for his fifth time; and Mary, the first female rider to race this route. As they set out, they will attempt to accomplish what very few have been able to. Over the course of a few weeks, they’ll attempt to climb over 200,000 vertical feet along the backbone of the Rocky Mountains.
They’ll experience mental breakdowns, treacherous snow, hellacious blisters, and total fatigue. Above all, they’ll race with no support – at times in total isolation. The tests of endurance and the accomplished moments throughout Ride the Divide prompt us to reflect on our inner desires to live life to the fullest.
Ride The Divide made its debut at the Vail Film Festival and was named the best adventure film at the event. Outside Magazine proclaimed that “(t)he toughest bike race in the world is not in France,” after reviewing the film.

UW-Madison cycling team freezin’ for bike safety

The University of Wisconsin-Madison cycling team will be "Freezin' for Safety" on Thursday, Dec. 2, to raise money for the Madison Area Safe Kids Coalition.

The Safe Kids Coalition provides car seats and bicycle helmets for underprivileged youth in the Madison area so they can stay safe while participating in everyday activities.

The annual 12-hour fundraiser, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 8 p.m., involves cycling team members riding bicycles on stationary trainers on Library Mall, regardless of the weather.

The group's last fundraiser brought in more than $2,200, and the Dec. 2 event is expected to generate a similar amount.

"This event is a great way for our club to give back to our community," says cycling team president Ken Huxtable. "The city of Madison has always been very supportive of both our club and the larger cycling community, and this is a great way for our club to return the favor."

Bicycle helmets are especially important to cycling team members, because the team lost one of its riders five years ago due to head trauma sustained during a bicycle race.

"The members of our team know the importance of bicycle helmets, and we urge everyone to always wear a bike helmet while riding," Huxtable says. "It's the best way to stay safe while having fun."
