UWF professor receives U.S. patent for early Alzheimer’s detection technology

Dr. James Arruda, professor of psychology at the University of West Florida, has received a Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for an electroencephalographic, or EEG, platform capable of detecting mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's dementia, a milestone that brings a non-invasive, accessible early-detection tool one step closer to clinical use.

UWF School of Education receives $579K NSF grant, leads national STEM teacher preparation project

The University of West Florida School of Education has received a $578,792 grant from the National Science Foundation to lead a collaborative project aimed at improving undergraduate teacher education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. This is part of a larger $1,498,899 grant awarded across five universities.

UWF enrollment exceeds 15,000 students

The University of West Florida has achieved a historic milestone, surpassing 15,000 students enrolled for the first time in the University's 58-year history. To date, enrollment has reached 15,601 for the Fall 2025 semester, marking a 5% increase over last year and exceeding the University’s goal of 15,200 students by 3%.

UWF Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering adds new civil engineering program

This fall, the University of West Florida’s Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering will launch a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree. The program will be housed within the newly established Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Management and is designed to provide students with a hands-on education that prepares them for leadership in the civil engineering field.

UWF Explore Trips immerses local elementary school students in hands-on science exploration

A new program at the University of West Florida is giving local fifth grade students the opportunity to come onto UWF’s campus for immersive, hands-on science exploration. UWF Explore Trips is part of the UWF Living Lab Initiative, which encourages greater academic and research engagement with UWF campus natural areas, facilitating outdoor class sessions and using conservation areas for research opportunities. Samantha Zook-Johnson, camps and community program coordinator, came up with the idea to fill what she felt was a local need.

UWF LEAD program restores historic anchor for exhibition at UWF Archaeology Institute

A historic 1800s anchor which had been housed in the dark has been brought into the light, following the efforts of a campuswide leadership program. Faculty and staff of UWF’s 2024-25 LEAD, which stands for leadership, enhancement, activities and development, class worked with the Archaeology Institute to prepare the anchor for outdoor exhibition and create an exhibit space at the Archaeology Institute on UWF’s Pensacola campus. Previously, the anchor had been stored for curation in the University’s archaeological collections facilities after being sent to UWF for conservation in 2014.

100,000 Argos strong, UWF community celebrates alumni milestone

The University of West Florida will reach a significant milestone, officially surpassing 100,000 graduates during the University’s Fall 2023 Commencement on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Pensacola Bay Center. Since its first commencement ceremony in 1968, the University has conferred more than 121,000 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Lifelong scientist and accomplished businessman the late Dr. Frank Silver established Dr. Frank and Dale Silver Distinguished Chemistry Endowment

The University of West Florida Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering recently received a $100,000 gift from the late Dr. Frank Silver to establish the Dr. Frank and Dale Silver Distinguished Chemistry Endowment. Named after himself and his wife, the endowment will provide operational and scholarship support to students in the Department of Chemistry. Dr. Frank Silver was a longtime supporter of the college, helping with the costs of students’ travel to conferences, research supplies and seminar attendance, until his passing on Nov. 13.

National Cybersecurity Workforce Development Program showcase highlights program’s success and impact

The University of West Florida Center for Cybersecurity highlighted the success and impact of the National Cybersecurity Workforce Development Program at a showcase held at Florida International University in Washington, D.C., on May 11. Cybersecurity leaders addressed the program’s role in meeting the cybersecurity workforce challenge and program partners and graduates shared their perspectives on the program. Dr. Eman El-Sheikh, associate vice president for UWF’s Center for Cybersecurity and principal investigator for the national program, shared a program overview and highlighted its impact.
