British Soldier beheaded in broad day light in Woolwich, South London few hours ago

A man, believed to be a serving soldier, was attacked and beheaded with a machete in broad day light this afternoon in Woolwich, South London by two men in what is suspected to be a terror attack.

The soldier was attacked with knives and meat cleavers following a car crash. Two black men in a blue Vauxhall car rammed into the soldier on John Wilson Street, then jumped out of their car and started attacking him with meat cleavers. An eye witness said the attackers were "chopping this guy to pieces, literally hacking at something like it was a piece of meat".

It is claimed that the men shouted 'Allahu Akbar', which means God is great in Arabic before attacking. After the attack, the men then waited for about 20 minutes for police to show up and then tried to attack the officers. They were shot by police officers. One of them is believed to still be alive.

40-year-old Maxwell Madu on Monday told the Agege Grade ‘A’ Customary Court that if his wife, Grace Oguche, 24, divorces him, she may lose her life instantly.

“She had gone to the village to find a way to break the oath (we had), but they told her it could not be broken except I was present. She is playing with her life.” Madu said that his wife had taken the sacred oath of kolanut and water with him in her village. He explained that the oath demanded total loyalty to him...

25-yr-old remanded in prison over human trafficking

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, yesterday, ordered the remand in Ikoyi prisons of a 25-year-old man charged with human trafficking.

The accused, Paul Osasu, who resides at Ojo barracks, Lagos, is being prosecuted by National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Person, NAPTIP, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and human trafficking.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge but the judge, Justice Musa Kurya, ordered that he be remanded in custody pending bail application by his counsel.

The prosecutor, told the court that the accused was arrested on July 17, 2012, at the Ojo barracks by officials of the agency, allegedly in the business of human trafficking, as he conspired with one Elizabeth Arikoro, who is now at large, to lure one Beauty Imagbenikaro away from her home town in Edo State.

The accused was alleged to have taken Imagbenikaro, 20, from her residence in Benin to Lagos, with a promise to offer her a factory job. On reaching Lagos, he again told the victim that he would prepare traveling documents for her to Mali.

According to the prosecutor, the accused was later arrested by NAPTIP officials, following a tip off.

The alleged offence contravenes the provisions of section 15 of the Trafficking in person (prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act, 2003, and attracts a term of 14 years imprisonment upon conviction, without an option of fine.

Eight die, Eight injured in Anambra auto crash

Less than eight persons were feared dead, yesterday, in an auto crash involving a Mitsubishi commercial bus and a tipper lorry at the Ideani end of Nnobi-Ideani-Ojoto-Umuoji-Nkpor road in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Eight others also allegedly sustained various degrees of injuries in the accident, which occurred as a result of a head-on collision by the two vehicles.

According to an eyewitness, the bus, an Ekwulobia-bound fully-loaded mass transit vehicle, coming from Onitsha-Nkpor, collided with the tipper, coming from Nnobi end, close to Ideani River.

The tipper lorry was said to have smashed the bus, which resulted in the instant death of six of the bus passengers, while two others died on their way to a nearby hospital.

Those that sustained injuries were said to on danger list in their hospital beds.

Efforts by newsmen to get in touch with the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in-charge of Nnobi Police Station on phone, proved abortive as there was no response.

A Senior Police Officer, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the incident but said only four had so far been confirmed dead by the police.

The Onitsha Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Mr. Metta, could not be reached at press time.

If anyone was ever in doubt as to what should be done with the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted every year for candidates seeking university education in Nigeria, events of last Saturday should be enough to convince doubting Thomases that UTME has long overstayed its usefulness.
The high level of cheating in that exam was unprecedented. Unfortunately, security personnel and officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board who were supposed to apprehend candidates engaged in exam malpractices were the ones aiding and abetting what they were engaged to control. It was so bad that young candidates writing the exam for the first time were shocked beyond imagination.

Candidates waited patiently for mercenaries specially employed to help in writing the exam. Some got answers as text messages directly on their mobile phones. This is not to say that everybody was involved. A large number of candidates still did the right thing in that they neither cheated nor sought help from anybody.

In some centres, security operatives assisted candidates to smuggle their phones to exam halls despite the ban placed on such items in exam halls. Candidates paid as little as N200 to bribe security personnel and invigilators. It was really bad.

Many candidates were just too desperate. They have a reason to be. Out of the over 1.7 million candidates that sat for the UTME, only 500,000 will eventually be admitted to university, according to Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayat Rufai,.

But going by these developments, the purpose of sitting for UTME has been defeated. Or how do you describe an exam that is not producing candidates that are truly qualified? Each university would still need to administer its own test to get the good ones.

What is the point of sitting for an exam that will not be the true test of a candidate’s intelligence at the end of the day? Whether we like it or not, some of these poor candidates will escape and find their way to the university. They are not likely to do well there. They are the ones that will make university environment hostile to other serious students and members of the academic community. They are the ones that will join cult groups and threaten lecturers to either give them marks or risk their lives.

It is high time universities were allowed to select their candidates in line with global standard. Can you imagine Oxford, Cambridge or Yale relying on an external body to decide for them the candidates to be admitted? Universities should be able to take decision on who they want to admit based on their own criteria which should be transparent, fair and objective.

Some people argue that admission may be done on cash and carry basis if it is left completely in the hands of universities thus making poor students to be at a disadvantage. This is possible but a transparent process and effective monitoring will curb this. Besides universities can’t afford to compromise their standard for too long as any wishy-washy admission process will produce weak and poor graduates that will ultimately negatively affect the rating of the university concerned.

Any university known for admitting wrong candidates will have serious image problem and won’t be able to compete globally. Sincerely, the earlier JAMB hands off UTME, the better it is going to be for everybody.

Two Arik Staff Caught With Cocaine In London

Two staff of Nigeria’s largest airline, Arik Air have been arrested at the Heathrow Airport in London for suspected drug trafficking on Tuesday.

The Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency disclosed that they had opened investigations after the Arik Airline workers were allegedly caught with cocaine in the Uk.

NDLEA spokesperson, Mitchell Ofoyeju said the allegations constituted a national embarrassment.

“We are aware of the arrest and we have
opened an investigation into the matter,” Ofoyeju said.

Banji Ola, Arik Air spokesperson said he was not aware of the incident or flight details.

However, Arik Air image maker, Banji Ola said he was yet to be briefed on the matter.

It would be recalled that in December 2011, a 29-year-old Arik Air female hostess, Miss Chinwendu Uwakaonyenma
Ogbonnaya, was arrested at Heathrow Airport over allegation of drug smuggling into the United Kingdom and was thereafter sentenced to five and a half years imprisonment last year.

We are blessed with two kids and hoping to have more in the future. My wife is simply the best. She's caring, honest, giving, very respectful and responsible and on top of all that she's drop dead gorgeous. I wish I could show you her pictures to see but that would give me away. Jonathan orders release of detained terrorists

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced in Abuja on Tuesday that it would release some persons detained in connection with terrorist activities.

The Director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen. Chris Olukolade, said in a statement that the decision to release the suspected terrorists was based on the directives of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Jonathan had declared state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa on May 14.

The statement said the move was in furtherance of the Federal Government’s position in response to requests by the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Reconciliation.

“The measure which is in line with presidential magnanimity to enhance peace efforts in the country will result in freedom for suspects, including all women under custody.

“The details of the directives and those to benefit from this gesture have been communicated to field units and the Joint Task Force, ‘’ it said.

The statement said that the beneficiaries would be released to the state governors who would be involved in further rehabilitation before the suspects were released to their respective community leaders and relations. (NAN)

There was a mild drama at the Agege Grade ‘A’ Customary Court as a mother of one, Mrs Grace Oguche revealed the reason why she wanted to dissolve her seven-year-old marriage to her husband, Mr. Maxwell Madu.

Grace, a former staff with Dana Airline alleged that her husband does not s3xually satisfy her in bed, besides, he has become jobless.

The highly provoked mother claimed that she had not for once enjoyed s3x with her husband since they got married.

She said, “My husband does not perform well in bed; it was by God’s glory that we had our son.”

Grace added that her husband maltreated her, stressing that any time she returns from work, he would always accuse her of coming late, calling her unprintable names.

Grace said her husband had failed in his responsibilities as she has become the breadwinner of the family by taking care of the home, providing food and money for him and their son.

She said, “With all I do, my husband doesn’t appreciate me. Ever since he became jobless, I take care of the responsibilities in the house. I go to the market to buy clothes, food items and so on, without any contribution from him.”

When she was asked what she wanted the court to do for her, she replied that the court should dissolve their marriage because her husband could not satisfy her in bed and he had failed to
perform his responsibilities at home.

Although Madu claimed what his wife had told the court was not the truth, he nonetheless agreed to divorce his wife.

He said it was his being jobless that pushed the wife to go after other men for s3x.

He said, “I love my wife, but I don’t understand her attitude. She changed towards me all of a sudden. My wife keeps late nights, she flirts around with different men and at times, she does not come home.

“My wife is never satisfied with s3x; she
complains every time and gets it somewhere else from other men. She tells me that there are real men who know how to make love.”

Madu pleaded with the court to dissolve their marriage.

The President of the court, Mr. Emmanuel Shokunle, however, said both parties should go home and make sure they maintain peace before the next adjourned date.

Mandela’s Daughters To Sue Him Over Rights To Property

Nelson Mandela’s daughters are suing him for the rights to his artworks and control of his millions, it has been reported.

According to the Star on Monday, Zenani and Makaziwe Mandela intended fighting an order of Johannesburg High Court in April 2004, which gave Mandela the right to instruct Ismail Ayob, his then lawyer, to stop managing his financial, personal and legal affairs.

The order also barred Ayob from selling any of Mandela’s artworks.

The Star reported that Mandela’s current lawyer, Bally Chuene, filed an affidavit last week, in response to a lawsuit brought by the sisters, represented by Ayob.
Last month, the sisters filed papers asking for Chuene, George Bizos SC and Human Settlements Minister, Tokyo Sexwale, to remove themselves as directors and trustees of the Mandela Trust and as directors of Harmonieux and Magnifique (Pty) Ltd with immediate effect.

In his replying affidavit, Chuene reportedly said he, Bizos and Sexwale had, in 2011, refused to release the trust’s money to the daughters without a legal justification.

Opinion: I'm Not Comfortable With My Househelp

You may say I'm being paranoid,but at least hear me out. I think I need spiritually sound Christians to advise me correctly.

I got a new househelp recently because I needed help after I delivered about 6 weeks ago. The problem is that I'm not very comfortable with her. The night before she came, I dreamt of an evil bird that flew into our home. Two days later, I dreamt of a predatory dog that came into our house at night. I don't usually dream such dreams.

Yesterday, a cat we don't know where it came from was heard crying in the engine of our car just bought 3 days ago. The cat was found and ran out.

As soon as I set my eyes on her as she stepped out of d car when my husband brought her for the first time, I had an uneasy feeling. Maybe because of my dream the previous night, I don't know. I had actually prayed that morning for God to stop her from coming if she was not d right person, but here she was already in my house.

On interacting with her ,I learnt she is a 30-yr-old lady, married but separated from her husband. Had 6 children, with only 2 surviving. Her parents told her to leave her husband because they believed that her husband's 2nd wife was the cause of her children's deaths. Her husband took another wife because her children were dying. She got married 12yrs ago. Due to circumstances, she decided to do the job of a househelp to support herself. She left her children in the care of her parents. www.uwillcgossip.com

Because she is older, I expected her to be responsible, so I gave her a free hand in my house. But she is misusing it. When I'm bathing my baby or cooking, instead of coming to help,she sits in the parlour watching TV. When visitors come, instead of her to leave the parlour, she sits tight. Does not tell me thank you after eating. Does not do anything unless she is told. She has been with me for 2 weeks, but has not changed baby's diapers once, talk-less of bathing her. She just called me now as I was typing this to come and change baby's pampers. And I've shown her countless times how to do it. And I don't like the way she walks into my room uninvited. You would have thought that a married woman would know better.

Funny enough, my husband's relative living with us is more hardworking than she is. The girl even does some of the chores I send the new help out of respect for her. I only needed another person cos she is still in secondary school, and I needed someone to help me since I'm also studying for my forthcoming exams in my masters program. Also I need someone to take care of my baby when I resume from maternity leave. Right now,I can categorically say she is a liability to me, unless she improves.

The bottom-line is I'm not just comfortable with her. What do I do? Mature advice only.

JTF arrests 120 terrorists in Maiduguri

Five strongholds of the Boko Haram insurgents in the northern part of Borno State have been taken by the Special Forces, it was learnt yesterday.

No fewer than 120 members of the sect were rounded up at the weekend at the funeral of one of its top commanders, who was killed during one of the raids, a Defence Headquarters statement said yesterday.

Terrorists fleeing towards neigbouring countries – Chad and Niger Republic – are being contained, Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade said in the statement.

A 24-hour curfew has been slammed on Yobe State, six days after a state of emergency was declared.

More troops have also been deployed in Adamawa, the third state under the state of emergency.

But the curfew in Borno has been relaxed from 24 hours to 12 hours.

Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa, a spokesman for the Special Force in Maiduguri, announced the reduction of the curfew imposed five days ago to 6pm – 7a.m. But he declined to give details.

Gen. Olukolade said: “The Special Forces have now secured the environs of New Marte, Hausari, Krenoa, Wulgo and Chikun Ngulalo, after destroying all the terrorists camps sited in the vicinity of these localities. The troops are already interacting with locals and citizens assuring them of their safety and freedom from the activities of insurgents.

“Terrorists fleeing towards Chad and Niger Republic are being contained as they have had encounters with Multi-National Joint Task Force in various locations towards the border. Advancing troops also observed a few shallow graves believed to be those of hurriedly buried members of the terrorist group.

“In Maiduguri, about 120 terrorists were arrested as they organised burial of one of their commanders who died in an encounter with Special Forces the previous day. The arrested insurgents are in custody of the Joint Task Force where they are being interrogated.

“Meanwhile, Defence Headquarters has observed the use of photographs purportedly taken in the areas covered by the operations and wishes to state that the photographs are questionable as they do not reflect any related reality of the social or geographical environment.

“ This also makes the story they claim to depict of Nigerians fleeing to Niger Republic and other countries doubtful. The media is advised to always strive to associate stories with accurate pictures in order to avoid misleading the public.”

The Special Forces commander for Adamawa State, Brig.-Gen. Fatai Oladipo Ali, addressed 200 troops that arrived from Lagos, part of an expected extra 1,000 sent to the state.

“There will be no hiding place for terrorists. The insurgents signed their own death warrants by taking up arms against the Nigerian state,” he told the troops.

Gen. Ali warned soldiers against “harassing innocent people”.

The U.N. emergency relief agency (OCHA) and the Niger’s Red Cross said in a report that around 1,500 people had fled across the border into Niger in the past two weeks, but it had not yet been established what their nationalities were.

“Humanitarian agencies fear an increase in the numbers coming into Niger,” it said, adding that they were monitoring the situation. The region also borders Chad and Cameroon.

Yobe State government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew across the state.

Announcing the adjustment of the restriction of movement, the Special Adviser to Governor Ibrahim Gaidam on Media, Abdullahi Bego, in a statement, said the decision was to sustain the relative peace being enjoyed in the state.

He said: “This is to inform members of the public that in view of the need to sustain the relative peace that all parts of the state currently enjoy, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has approved an adjustment of the hours during which public movement is restricted around the state.

“Consequently, restriction on movement now starts from 6.00pm to 6.00am daily throughout the state, with effect from today, Monday, 20th May, 2013.

In Borno State, life is becoming unbearable for residents of Maiduguri, with the closure of exit and link roads in and outside the town by men of the Joint Task Force (JTF).

The closure has caused the non-supplies of vegetables and other essential food items, such as fruits, milk and eggs, to the Maiduguri Monday Market (MMM).

It was learnt that vegetables and other essential food items were usually supplied from the outskirts of the metropolis like Damboa, Lake Chad Basin Areas, Jos and Baga.

Consequently, the Market prices of vegetables, milk and eggs, have, however, increased by 100 per cent at the Maiduguri market.

A survey shows that one small plastic container of tomatoes is now sold at N200 as against last week’s price of N100.

A 50kg bag of onions is now N20, 000, as against the old price of N10, 000.

Other items affected by the closure of roads in Borno State include milk and eggs, which is now N1, 500, from its old price of N850.

As the market prices soar, housewives and residents resort to dried vegetables of okro, spinach, garlic, meat and fish supplied from the local fish ponds of farmers in Maiduguri.

Link roads in and outside the Maiduguri are intermittently closed and opened at military discretion.

Nigeria still hope they can persuade Sidney Sam to play for them despite his call-up to the Germany squad for two upcoming friendlies.

Sam was born by a German mother but his father comes from Nigeria so he could represent any of the countries.

Germany are set to try out the 24-year-old against Ecuador on 29 May and against the United States three days later.

But Nigeria are “optimistic” Sam has not shut the door on them.

The Nigeria Football Federation has been pursuing Sam since last November but has struggled to satisfy all the requirements for the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder to switch allegiance from the country of his birth.

“We are still working on Sidney Sam and we are aware that Germany have invited him for non-competitive games,” said NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire.

“Some officials have been mandated to handle this and they’ve intensified their efforts since last week.

“The Super Eagles are at present camping in Germany and our officials have been in touch with Sam to fast-track the process.

“We are optimistic he will play for Nigeria whether he turns out for Germany now or not.”

Sam is keen to try out his options without committing himself to either country at this stage – and Germany’s friendly matches give him the chance to do so.

Is paternity testing becoming an issue in Nigeria?
We have seen that there is serious need for it because in many homes things are happening that are scary both to the lives of children and their parents. And for the general statistics that is now available, it is found that three out of every ten men are not the fathers of their babies. Similarly, three out of every ten children are not fathered by men they have seen as their biological fathers. What we have found out is that, anytime we take ten men, at least three of them eventually found that they are not the fathers of the children they call their own. Now, the global statistics is 100, 000 out of every 300, 000 men. But what we have found that is that the situation is higher in Nigeria than other places. For example in our laboratory here, 50 per cent of the cases comes out negative. And we also realised that majority of the first-borns are affected. You only need to be here to see big men cry like little kids and watch children weep in agony. It has been that bad. And I dare say it is becoming something every home must do and you may be quite surprised at the level of dastard revelation.

About thirty per cent of fathers are unknowingly bringing up children who are not biologically theirs. And it is suspected that this percentage may be on the increase due to sexual recklessness. According to recent trends in sexual health, especially in Nigeria, it was suggested that unprotected sex and multiple partners are comparatively common occurrences with a large proportion of conceptions still unplanned. So, more than half, that is, 50 per cent of all paternity tests carried out by our lab comes out negative and the most affected are first-borns, except in a few cases.

Do these cases happen mostly in matrimonial settings or in casual relationships?
In both matrimony and casual affiliations! I tell you, we have had series of married men come here and go back home devastated. In one instance, a man came here with his wife. Out of the five children he thought were his own, he discovered that only two belonged to him. And they are both duly married, living together as husband and wife. You see, the major problem we have in our country is that most of these cases are not duly documented. So, people don’t know we have such issues among us. In fact, some even don’t know where to go for the test to determine their child or children’s paternity. And I tell you, if you go to ten homes as we speak, you will be amazed to find that in almost all of them the children there do not belong to the men. It is that rampant.

If it is that rampant, how would you describe the three years since you started testing men?
Now, the general statistics by the American Association of Blood Banks is that globally, 100, 000 out of 300, 000 men are not the actual fathers of their presumed children. And like I said earlier, the Nigerian situation is even alarming. Also, Duess International, the condom manufacturers, once noted that Nigeria has the most reckless sexual life. So, you can then imagine what the outcome would be like if we say okay, let’s start taking statistics one-by-one.

How many families do you attend to each week?
We test about 15 to 20 families. People come here as a result of various types of controversies over the paternity of certain children. You know, families have come to us with claims that a child neither takes after the mother nor the father in looks and character. So, the man of the house would be curious to ascertain facts. And when they come here with such children, the fears of the fathers have often been affirmed. Fathers usually have the doubts; maybe he has been hearing some rumours, and you know, men are often the last to hear such things about themselves. Until many of them come here to take the test, they have nurtured other men’s children before realising it.

What does it take to do a paternity test?
Technology has made it so easy. It is just like any other deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test. In less than two seconds, we take the sample from the man. We use the Helix Swabs like a “big cotton buds” to extract some cells from the man’s mouth. We rub the ‘Swab’ up-and-down the mouth to get some epithelial cells from around the cheek bone. In the nucleus of every cell, there is DNA. Once we collect that, we purify, extract and then multiply it and get the genetic profile which we then send to DNA laboratory abroad for testing.

What happens in situations where DNA samples do not match as we saw with someDANA victims?
So many reasons could be responsible for that. We have had a case in which a boy went to an hospital to claim the body of his deceased dad and on testing him, it was found that he was not fathered by the dead man. The genetic profile of the boy does not match with that of the man he claimed to be his father. And DNAs don’t lie. The medical experts conducting these tests have nothing personal against the people that come to them for testing. Every human being take half of the genetic profile from either parent. Therefore, it is a matter of case closed if the genetic profile of the living does not match with that of the dead man. He is simply not that father.

We get back to the slave issue again. In the previous article I already pointed out that you should not let your wife get the impression that she is only a slave to you. Lying on the couch and leaving your wife to do all the work is nothing other than letting her be your slave. This type of behavior screams at your wife that you have no respect for her.
