According to the Federal Government: about $4 trillion over a ten-year period.

More than just an historical document, the 2010 census helps the government determine how to distribute federal dollars to support local infrastructure including money for schools, roads, hospitals and other crucial services. Since 2000, the government has distributed about $400 billion a year to the nation based off of the last census count. read more »

What is life like for a family living at or near the poverty level in Massachusetts?

The United Way Poverty Simulation provides participants with the challenge of performing the day to day tasks needed to sustain a family against the backdrop of poverty.

Each participant is given a role. Some families are newly unemployed, some are homeless, others are single parents or grandparents raising their grandchildren. The task of the "families" is to provide for basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute "weeks." read more »

Helpline calls reveal portrait of a community still in recovery

BOSTON - Despite indications that the economy may be rebounding, new data from Mass2-1-1, United Way's statewide helpline for health and human services, reveals that calls for help from Massachusetts residents continue to grow. In 2009, 2-1-1 answered more than 50,000 calls for help in Massachusetts. Comparison data measured over the fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) shows a significant increase of nearly 45% in call volume across the Commonwealth between FY2008 and FY2009. read more »

BOSTON - As part of a larger strategy to help families hit hard by the recession move from crisis to financial stability, United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley announced today that is investing $125,000 to raise public awareness about changes to the earned income tax credit (EITC), which could result in more money for working families this tax season. Created in 1975, EITC is a federal income tax credit for low to moderate income individuals and families. read more »
