Remembering Myron "Mike" Schneiderwent

Myron "Mike" Schneiderwent, Professor Emeritus of Physics, taught astronomy and physics through the Distance learning Center since operations began in 1978. He retired from the university more than ten years ago but continued to teach with Distance Learning until only weeks before his passing on Friday, May 10, 2013. Myron, known to all as Mike, spent 35 of his 45 years teaching for the UW-Superior as an online professor for the Distance Learning Program. He was recently honored with the UW-Superior's Distinguished Service Award.

Mike died at the age of 78, with his loving wife, Marian at his side. His death was caused by complications due to congestive heart failure.

Dr. Schneiderwent began his university teaching at the University of
Wisconsin-Superior in 1967, where he retired from full-time teaching in 2000. He came out of retirement later in 2000 to teach Distance Learning classes in beginning physics.

Mike's advice to new instructors of Distance Learning was to over prepare your courses and to have them ready weeks before the students get to see them. His advice to students--there is a great deal of reading to do. The Module Reviews are important as are the course objectives. He described his students as hard-working, capable students in an asynchronous manner. When asked about Distance Learning faculty and staff, he described them as a "super professional competent machine."

Betty Lou Mannigel Imler, 2012 UW-Superior graduate and student of Dr. Schneiderwent--Astronomy 100 had high praise for him. "Over a period of time I grew to admire and have deep respect not only for his knowledge, but his passion for the stars...Every time I look up at the stars I will continue to think of him and the appreciation he taught me to have for our beautiful solar system. Thank you Dr. Schneiderwent for the memories."

Dr. Randy Gabrys Alexson, professor in the Natural Science department added, "MIke was my colleague, mentor and dear friend for more than 25 years. He epitomized the phrase "gentleman and scholar." He cared for the his students so much and he generously shared his knowledge, expertise and time. The university was enriched through his dedication and will diminished by his loss."

Distance Learning Center staff created the Mike Schneiderwent Scholarship Fund in the UW-Superior Foundation to honor Mike. The fund will now be a memorial to Mike, and will help support future Distance Learning students.

He will remembered fondly by his family, students, co-workers and friends.

Derek Krivinchuk to be guest tweeter on the UW System UWpowersMe Twitter account

Senior transportation and logistics major, Derek Krivinchuk, will be this
week's guest voice of the UW System's "Knowledge Powers Wisconsin" campaign, taking his turn on @UWpowersMe Twitter account May 20- May 26.

Krivinchuk, an avid tweeter himself, is a perfect choice to share his story about how UW-Superior powers him. Throughout the week he will share his experiences and give followers a look into life at UW-Superior and the adventures of being a student and RA on campus. Krivinchuk is from nearby, Poplar, Wis. and attended Northwestern High School in Maple, Wis.

Krivinchuk said, "It's an honor to help represent UW-Superior through the UWPowersMe twitter account. I look forward to helping shine the light on our campus from my unique perspective."

In high school, Derek was a golfer and ran cross-country and will be running on the cross-country team this fall for the Yellowjackets. For fun, he enjoys
golfing, football and playing softball and will be running in his first
Grandmas Marathon in June. He enjoys playing sports when he does have
free time. He also conducts research for the UW-Superior transportation
and Logistics research center.

The @UWpowersMe Twitter account allows students, faculty, alumni - even chancellors - the opportunity to take control for one week, telling their UW story as only they can. It is a component of the social media arm of "Knowledge Powers Wisconsin," the campaign that highlights how the UW System powers economic growth in Wisconsin, improving the state's competitive edge by leveraging human capital, supporting business and industry and strengthening local communities.

Over 340 students were eligible to receive diplomas Saturday, May 18 for the 117th Commencement at UW-Superior.

1984 UW-Superior graduate, Tony Hernandez gave a great speech to the class of 2013.

He asked them to cultivate empathy, live life with urgency

and to push yourself to the edge of your comfort zone.

Tony is co-founder, of Latino Broadcasting Company, president and CEO.

44% of the graduates were first generation in their families. 13 were veterans.

The oldest was a 57 year-old mother of (7) who earned her Social Work degree. The youngest was a 20 year-old who started taking college level classes at the age of 16.

UW-Superior Diversity Award winner 2012-13

Office of Multicultural Affairs has chosen Carl Crawford
as its Community Diversity Award Recipient for the 2012-13 school year.

Carl is a graduate of UW-Superior and played and coached basketball with the
Yellowjackets as well. Carl was the featured speaker at the February
Diversity Dialog program on campus.

Carl will be honored at the Graduates of Color Reception Friday, May 17^th in the
Multicultural Center room 232 in Old Main. The Graduates of Color
Reception is an annual event and this award is given each year to a community
member connected to UW-Superior that has been a valuable asset to the helping
of persons of color and enriching the community as a whole.

Crawford is the Intercultural Center Coordinator at Lake Superior College and
has been part of many community boards and non-profit organizations.
Crawford said, "I'm honored and humbled that UW-Superior chose me as the
Diversity Award winner this year. I have great memories of being part of the
campus and the black student group when I was there. UW-Superior has been
committed to diversity for all of their students, faculty and staff."

Alvin (Chip) Beal, diversity coordinator at UW-Superior said they couldn't have
picked a better representative for the award. "I believe Carl Crawford is what
this award is all about. He not only lives in the community, and works in
the community, he is community. Carl embodies encouragement and exudes
that to everyone he comes in contact with. When you meet Carl, you just
want to be a better person."

The 16^th annual Graduates of Color program will
run from 6-8 p.m. Friday May 17 and will include cultural performances and presentations and is open to the public.

Help paint Our Superior community mural

It's time to paint your mark on Superior!

The 'Our Superior' Community Mural will be painted by you, members of the community. Bring your children, your neighbors, grandparents and friends to 1322 Banks Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily May 21 through June 2.

This two-week project is sponsored by the Superior Business Improvement District, Superior Public Art-Spaces and Twin Ports Custom Climate.

Part of a UW-Superior graduate studies public art proposal, this community mural is ready to get painted. Twin Ports Custom Climate has generously donated their building to be used as our canvas. The address is 1322 Banks Avenue, on the north side in the parking lot.

Paint and direction are provided. You bring the inspiration, and your painting shirt!

Come as a family, a group, or by yourself. It will be a fantastic and fun adventure for everyone.

Tony G Basketball tournament donates to UW-Superior

Organizers of the Tony G Memorial basketball tournament in Superior raised nearly $8,000 from their recent tournament, with more expected.

Last month, the 9^th annual Tony G memorial tournament had 131 teams
competing at UW-Superior at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

The tournament has supported many programs at UW-Superior over the years.
This year, $6,635 dollars were donated overall to UW-Superior, with more
expected. Some of the money raised at this year's event went towards the
GEARS program, $3,500 dollars; Campus Rec Department, received $1,300 dollars; and $2,035 dollars donated to the Tony Gigliotti Scholarship Fund from family and friends.

Tournament organizers also donated $500.00 dollars towards a War Memorial in West Duluth and $600.00 dollars for the Second Harvest Food Bank.

On January 9, 2005 a tragic car accident on the snowy roads of I-35 took the life of Tony Gigliotti, a UW-Superior Legal Studies student.   As a way to remember and celebrate Tony - friends and family members come together each April to put on the Tony G Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament held on the campus of UW-Superior. The initial goal of the tournament was to raise money for a scholarship in Tony's memory at the university. The inaugural tournament in 2005 attracted approximately 40 teams. This past April 20 - 21, the 9^th
annual Tony G. 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was held and attracted 131 teams
from as far away as upper Michigan, La Crosse, and Forest Lake.

Mark Johnson, one of the tournament organizers said, "I have lived in Superior
all of my life. I repeatedly see this community gather around and support
one another, it is very unique. Each year our community support grows,
even in these tough economic times. Without the support from our
community sponsors and the support of UW-Superior this event could not happen."

Johnson said this tournament also helps everybody get together and remember a
great person.

"This event has meant so much to me and the others involved. It can be difficult, it can bring up some unhappy memories, and it can be difficult to deal with the loss of a friend. However, it has taught me to deal with loss in a very unique
way; we use this event as a celebration of life. The tournament each year
has an assortment of Tony's friends, and relatives that have become involved
over the years. I see people at the tournament, player's coaches, volunteers,
friends that have been participating since our first event. It is amazing
that this event has become such a great community event, we as a group are
proud and look forward as we continue to grow each year."

Next year, tournament organizers want to have an even bigger event.Johnson added, "The 10^th annual Tony G. 3 on 3 memorial basketball tournament with
hard work from our many volunteers will be out biggest and best event!
The partnership with UW-Superior has been amazing the Mertz Mortorelli
Gymnasium and Lydia S. Thering Fieldhouse is one of the best facilities in the
area. When we started the tournament in 2005 we had two goals: 1) Create
a permanent endowment with the foundation. 2) Use the tournament to celebrate
Tony's life and the memories we have of him. We have far exceeded our
goals! We have been able to take the heartbreaking loss of a friend and
create a positive community event that we have been thrilled with the results the
past 9 years."

Thanks to the generosity of the many friends, family, and community members, over the years - the Tony Gigliotti Scholarship Fund has surpassed $80,000 - and tournament organizers have now chosen to support other programs at UW-Superior and the community as a whole. This year, in addition to continuing support to the scholarship fund, tournament proceeds supported the GEARS (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness in Superior) program and Campus Recreation at UW-Superior, the Second Harvest Food Bank and the War Memorial project in West Duluth.

Volunteer at Our Grandma's Watering Station

Location: Grandma's Marathon Mile 20, 48th Avenue East, Duluth

Time: 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22

Volunteering during Grandma's Marathon is a great opportunity for UW-Superior to show our community spirit!

We're looking for individuals (alumni, faculty, staff, students, friends, family) to help set up and service a water station and support both half-marathon runners and full-marathon runners

The station is at Mile 20, which is the Verizon Wireless watering station near 48th Avenue East and London Road.

If interested, please email Sam Singer at ssinger3@uwsuper.edu with your name, t-shirt size, and times you're able to help.

We'll be wearing Verizon Volunteer shirts but please feel free to wear UW-Superior gear too (hats, bandanas, other accessories).

Closer to race day, you'll receive a detailed email with instructions on where and when to meet the rest of the volunteer team. Running this year? If you are running, stop by the Bookstore and grab some UW-Superior gear to show your spirit during the race.
