People taking part in the Japanese New Year celebration in the Yellowjacket Union perform the Ami Machi Bon dance, which is the special dance of the region that includes Superior's sister city of Ami Machi. Several hundred people turned out for the dance along with other demonstrations of Japanese culture.

UW-Superior alumna and top intelligence analyst on Africa retires

Margaret McSorley Culbert, Class of 1970, retired in January 2012 as one of the nation's top intelligence analysts on Africa.

As Defense Intelligence Officer for Africa, Culbert was the substantive expert on Africa for the Defense Intelligence Agency and the broader Department of Defense Intelligence Analytic Community in the Pentagon. She had held the post since 2008.

Overall, Culbert served as an Africa analyst for 24 of the 28 years she spent with the Defense Intelligence Agency. That included a 10-year assignment as an intelligence officer for the Defense Intelligence Agency's JC Crisis Management Support Team, in which she assured a full range of support on Africa analysis for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council, State Department and Congress.

Her list of African assignments was long, including visits to 20 countries as well as three years with the Defense Attache' Office in the Ivory Coast and four years living in Egypt. Along with her UW-Superior degree, she earned two masters degrees and graduated from the National War College.

Her awards include the DIA Director's Award for Exceptional Civilian Service, the Intelligence Community Unit Award for performance on crisis cells, and the DIA Director's Annual Agency Unit Award - Africa Crisis Working Group.

Culbert's husband isTom Culbert, Class of 1970, who spent time as an Africa specialist for the U.S. Air Force and the Pentagon before retiring to become an aviation consultant. Margaret and Tom live in Virginia.

'75 grad Patricia Sheils illustrates her first children's book

Patricia G. Sheils, a 1975 UW-Superior graduate, has illustrated her first children's book.

Written by a southern Wisconsinite Maddy Coogen Pritchard, "Bear With Me" is geared to three- to six-year-old children and to parents teaching acceptance of diversity to their children.

That's an appropriate theme for Sheils, who has a successful daycare in Ashland, Wis., and who makes presentations about the value of cultural diversity and other topics at various childcare conferences throughout the state.

In "Bear With Me," Sheils has charmingly created 10 Teddy bears in vivid water colors. From bright Red to Royal Blue, Sheils' colorful drawings truly symbolize the story's final line, "Remember - don't judge bears or people by their colors."

John Taylor to be inducted into hometown hall of fame

John Taylor, Class of 1961, this spring will be inducted into the Rib Lake School District Hall of Fame in recognition of his lifetime accomplishments.

Taylor graduated from the Wisconsin high school in 1957. At Superior he majored in business administration and earned his Air Force commission through ROTC.

He served in the Air Force for 27 years, retiring in 1988 at the rank of colonel. During his career he specialized in meteorology and commanded the largest weather wing in the Air Force, where he was in charge of 800 people at nearly 50 bases.

Taylor now lives in Nebraska. Since retiring he has been active in his local Habitat for Humanity chapter. In 2009 the organization named him the Volunteer of the Year in his county.

Taylor's induction ceremony in Rib Lake is set for May 10.
