At one of them I found this little gem. It appears to be some sort of journal from 1874, there were a few handwritten calendars with that year. It contains everything from poetry to inventory and supply lists. It was a great little piece with lots of personality, it makes you wonder who the owner was and all of the places it has been. The penmanship of that era was simply extraordinary, and it’s a skill that is rare these days. There were many more than 20 pages, so I may release a second set sometime down the road if you guys love these. Each texture is super hi-res at 3000 pixels tall and almost 5000 pixels wide. Not wanting to waste the afternoon’s efforts, I thought I could re-purpose these and salvage something usable out of them. The cardboard pieces had a good enough foundation of stains and patterns, so I decided to convert these to duotone and create a versatile and eclectic mix of textures. Some are single images, others combine two different pieces blended together. Each one is 4500×3000…enjoy!

The base images for these textures are some long-exposure fire photos I shot last week. I had never done long-exposure fire photos before, but I really loved the results. By shooting with a shutter speed between 1 and 2 seconds, the fire takes on a more smooth appearance. Here are a few samples of the original photos…

I was going to release those images as a set, but I have recently released a set of fire textures so I didn’t want to be too repetitive. Instead I did some experimenting and re-purposed them in this way. After some color correction and incorporating a few other subtle textures, I reached the aesthetic you see below.
