5. Newly Accepted to the Program

Clear Or Refresh Your DNS Cache

Sometimes, when we have a blog published to a Google Custom Domain, we'll make a change to the domain DNS configuration and notice that our readers can see the change, but we can't.

Once again, at 6:23, someone was able to see my blog and leave a comment

Yet, moments after I tried, I was still getting the 404 error. So there seems to be some intermittent activity!

This is not an unusual report.

Problems with custom domain publishing almost always involve some sort of DNS issue.

Let's look at a hypothetical domain DNS configurations, as one example. First, current:

mydomain.com.   14400   IN      A       216.21.239.197
www.mydomain.com. 14400      IN      A       216.21.239.197

Then, new:

mydomain.com.   14400   IN      A       64.233.179.121
mydomain.com.   14400   IN      A       72.14.207.121
www.mydomain.com. 14400      IN      CNAME   ghs.google.com.

Note that the above addresses have long since changed. We now have a quadruplet "A" address complement - which is a bit harder to notice, casually.

A TTL of 14400 seconds (4 hours) is a bit extreme. I see mostly 3600 seconds (1 hour), sometimes 900 seconds (15 minutes), in most DNS configurations.

If the TTL for your domain is 4 hours, it could be about that long after you make the change, before you start seeing any change.

I say "about", because the age of the configuration information, as cached on your computer or server when you make the change, is relevant. If the information is 15 minutes old, then with a TTL of 14400, you'll have to wait another 13500 seconds, or 3 3/4 hours. If the information is 3 hours old, you'll wait merely another hour.

Fortunately, you can hasten that if if the cache on your computer is the bottleneck.

From a command window, enter

ipconfig /flushdns

If the DNS cache in question is on your computer, it's gone now. The next time that you try for your custom domain, it should come up in its new configuration.

Note 2 Caveats

If you have a caching non-authoritative DNS server that your computer retrieves DNS directly from, you'll still have to wait. The "ipconfig" command works only under Microsoft Windows, and only on the computer with the cache. If the cache is upstream from you, you're going to have to remain patient.
Whether or not your local DNS cache, and your upstream non-authoritative DNS server gets the updates, you still can't predict the update status of the Google non-authoritative DNS servers.

Knowing your DNS setup is a good idea, when working with custom domains. And allowing for DNS latency at Google is essential.

As for why the tools are going away, it's likely that not many folks were using it. That said, it was a good option for Chromebook users or folks with underpowered laptops or tablets.

However, Google points out that "there are many free and paid third-party editing tools available if you're looking for new editing software." The mobile video calling service had a rather promising start last summer, having amassed five million installs in just one week following its debut in mid-August but didn’t manage to maintain that traction due to a variety of reasons. Google’s Android tool is now seemingly on the upswing again, having reached 50 million downloads only two months ago and now doubling that figure exactly one month before its first anniversary.

The Alphabet-owned company initially introduced Google Duo as a relatively simple video calling app with an intuitive user interface. Its streamlined design philosophy allowed the service to be even more accessible than many of its competitors, though its limited capabilities may have hindered its growth in the beginning. Google eventually tweaked its product strategy and decided to allow users to make audio-only calls using Google Duo, with that particular functionality rolling out worldwide in mid-April. One month later, the service started gaining traction again and its volume of Android downloads doubled in the last few months. The sole number of installs given by the Google Play Store isn’t equal to the number of active users, though recent trends still suggest that millions of people are using Google Duo on a fairly regular basis. It’s currently unclear whether the aforementioned addition of audio-only calls is the main reason for its recent popularity surge, though it likely didn’t hurt, with many previous Google Play Store reviews complaining about the app’s one-dimensional nature.

Twitter has a new Chief Financial Officer: Ned Segal.

CEO Jack Dorsey announced the news in a tweet on Tuesday. Segal was previously the SVP of Finance at software maker Intuit. He starts at Twitter in late August, according to a filing with the SEC.

Twitter is giving Segal roughly $22 million in stock vesting over four years, with $15 million in RSU grants and roughly $7 million in performance-based RSUs.

His annual salary will be $500,000 and he is receiving a signing bonus of $300,000.

Shares of Twitter, which finished up 3% in regular trading before the announcement, were more or less unchanged in after-hours trading.

Segal will take over the CFO role from Anthony Noto, who has been serving double-duty as COO and CFO since November. Noto will stay on as full-time COO, a role he filled when Adam Bain left last year.
