The Police Command in Lagos State says it has uncovered a staged kidnapping allegedly orchestrated by a scrap iron dealer and his accomplices.

The scrap dealer was said to have faked his kidnap, in a bid to fraudulently obtain the sum of N1.5 million from his employer.

The Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Fatai Tijani, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing journalists at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja.

He said one Abubakar reported the incident to the police on May 19, at about 10 p.m., that his brother, a scrap dealer, was missing.

According to the commissioner, while detectives were investigating the alleged disappearance, a video surfaced.

He said that the video.showed the purported victim being beaten with planks by unknown persons who threatened to kill him if a ransom of N1.5 million was not paid by his employer.

The police commissioner said the development initially appeared to be a genuine kidnapping case, prompting detectives to intensify efforts to rescue the victim and identify those behind the act.

Tijani disclosed that investigators later became suspicious after closely analysing the video and circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction.

The CP explained that detectives observed inconsistencies in the victim’s claims, particularly because there were no visible signs of physical assault or torture on him after he returned home.

“Upon careful analysis of the video and subsequent investigation, detectives discovered several inconsistencies.

“The suspect was subjected to further interrogation and eventually confessed that the kidnapping was staged, ” he said.

According to him, the alleged victim admitted conspiring with others now at large, to fake his kidnap.

Tijani further disclosed that the suspect confessed to diverting the sum of N490,000 previously given to him for business purposes.

He said the money was successfully recovered during investigations.

The commissioner also revealed that detectives visited the workshop where the fake kidnapping video was recorded as part of efforts to gather more evidence against the suspects.

According to him, efforts are ongoing to arrest fleeing suspects linked to the offence. (NAN)

By Luminous Jannamike

ABUJA — Former Minister of Transportation and presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday rejected the outcome of the party’s presidential primary, accusing the leadership of disenfranchising members and manipulating the process.

The rejection opens a fresh crisis within the ADC at a critical moment for the opposition party, which has been presenting itself as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement posted on X, Amaechi said he was rejecting what he described as ‘concocted results’ following reports of widespread voter disenfranchisement during the primary across the country.

Amaechi said, “I had initially stated that I will only accept the outcome of the Primaries if the process was free, fair, and transparent, and I stand by my word.

“I will not accept results from a process that does not reflect the values that the ADC had pledged to uphold, to rescue Nigerians from the impunity and gross mismanagement that our country is currently facing in the hands of the ruling party.”

The former Rivers State governor alleged that nearly 80 per cent of party members were denied the opportunity to vote during the exercise.

“There’s no way that about eighty percent of members of the party were not allowed to vote, and you expect me to accept such results. Then what makes us different from the others?” he asked.

Amaechi said the ADC was created to give ordinary Nigerians a voice and offer a genuine alternative to the kind of politics it once condemned.

Criticising the party leadership, Amaechi said: “A party that criticizes the ruling APC and INEC for vote buying, rigging and writing of results, cannot be engaged in vote buying, writing of results, and other electoral malpractices that leads to the disenfranchisement of voters who are party members. This is not acceptable!”

The remarks are expected to deepen tensions within the ADC and intensify scrutiny of the party’s presidential primary process as opposition parties prepare for the 2027 general election.

Oliver Glasner on Tuesday called on his Crystal Palace side to atone for their Europa League demotion by beating Rayo Vallecano in the UEFA Conference League final on Wednesday and returning to the competition.

Speaking ahead of the final in Leipzig, Germany, Glasner, who will leave the club after Wednesday’s game, said victory would return Palace to a competition they “deserved” to play in this season.

Palace qualified for a debut Europa League campaign when Glasner guided them to last season’s FA Cup, the first title in their history.

But UEFA stripped Palace’s right to play in the competition due to multi-club ownership rules and they started in the Conference League instead.

“For me, the best thing would be winning tomorrow, but not just for winning tomorrow, but because then they play European football in the Europa League next year,” Glasner said.

“Then we get next year what we should have got this year.”

The coach promised to follow Palace’s journey next season, even if he was no longer in the dugout.

“I would like to watch on TV that they start the Europa League with the desire and the confidence that they can win the Europa League as well.

“This would make me really happy, because then I see you can create a mindset together.”

Players take a drinks break during a a team training session at the team’s training ground in Beckenham, south of London on May 21, 2026, as part of a media day ahead of their UEFA Europa Conference League final football match against Rayo Vallecano on May 27. (Photo by Ben STANSALL / AFP)

The Austrian said his side “fully embraced” the Conference League from the moment the decision became clear.

“For teams accustomed to playing in the Champions League, it might not be the most glamorous European competition.

“But when you are a club participating in a European competition for the very first time in your history, it is simply an outstanding experience.”

Glasner, who won the Europa League as Eintracht Frankfurt manager in 2022, will sign off from Palace having overseen a level of success unprecedented in the club’s history.

In addition to last year’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City, Palace beat defending Premier League champions Liverpool in the Charity Shield to open this season.

Glasner said he told his players to relax and embrace the week.

“It’s quite relaxed… We’ll go to dinner. I don’t know what the players are doing, but they’re all adults. I hope nobody goes into a bar or something.”

Glasner said injured duo Adam Wharton and Chris Richards trained on Tuesday but a call on their inclusion will be made on match day.

“I’ll only nominate a starting XI who is 100 percent fit… Of course, they’ve still got some pain but I think many players are feeling pain after such a long season.

“Everybody wants to participate, but a final decision will be made tomorrow.”

Opponents Rayo are also on a fairytale run and could win a first major trophy in their history by winning on Wednesday.

Midfielder Oscar Trejo said his team wanted to repay the faith of their fans who have supported them on a “magical” run to a first European final.

“It’s something magical,” said Trejo, who will leave the south Madrid club after a decade after Wednesday’s game.

“It’s something we dreamed of. It’s been a tough process. We will go out all guns blazing tomorrow and we’ll try and enjoy it to the very last moment.”

By Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has approved a 50 per cent fare reduction on all passenger train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, to cushion transportation costs for Nigerians during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The Federal Ministry of Transportation disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi.

According to the statement, the fare discount takes effect from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and will remain valid until Monday, June 1, 2026.

The ministry explained that all NRC passenger train services nationwide would operate at half of the existing approved fares within the period.

It further stated that passengers who had already purchased tickets at the old rates before the announcement would receive a 50 per cent rebate, which could be reused for train journeys on or before June 1, 2026.

The ministry added that train schedules and timetables would remain unchanged as previously announced by the NRC.

“The Federal Ministry of Transportation appreciates the continued support of Nigerians and wishes all passengers and the Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Kabir celebration,” the statement read.

The government said the measure was part of efforts to ease travel burden on citizens during the festive period.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has warned that conflicting court judgments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2027 general elections could create uncertainty capable of undermining the electoral process if not urgently addressed.

In a statement titled “Nigerian Judges and Lawyers Should Be Prevented From Sabotaging the 2027 Election,” Falana criticised what he described as contradictory rulings delivered by judges of coordinate jurisdiction on the powers of INEC to fix timelines for party primaries and submission of membership registers.

According to him, the conflicting decisions have placed INEC in a difficult position, as the commission now appears free to decide which judgment to obey.

The senior advocate said such inconsistencies from courts of equal jurisdiction could weaken public confidence in the judiciary and the electoral process.

He maintained that judges and lawyers must avoid actions capable of destabilising preparations for the 2027 polls, noting that legal disputes should not be used to create confusion around electoral procedures.

The statement reads, “Last Wednesday, the Federal High Court invalidated the timeline issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of primaries and the nomination of candidates, ahead of the 2027 general election. In a judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Umar, the Court also set aside the INEC’s May 10 deadline requiring political parties to submit a register and database of all their members as a condition for qualifying to participate in the general elections.

“It held that the time frame the electoral umpire announced for political parties to conduct their primaries and to submit, withdraw, or replace the names and particulars of their candidates for the general elections “is inconsistent with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.” The case was filed against INEC by the Youth Party.

“Yesterday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) appealed against the Federal High Court’s judgement which nullified its revised timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of the 2027 general elections. INEC also filed a motion for stay of execution of the judgement, pending the hearing and determination of its appeal at the Court of Appeal.

“Today, the Federal High Court affirmed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has the legal authority to fix timelines within which political parties must conduct their primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. In the judgment, the court held that INEC is empowered under the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2026 to issue election timetables that include deadlines for political party primaries and related preparatory activities.

“Justice J.K. Omotosho who delivered the judgment declared that Election Timetable is a chain of events or actions which include submission of membership register of political parties to be used for the purpose of primaries and fix timeframes within which political parties are to organize their primary Elections for the purpose of the stated 2027 Election”. The case was filed by the Social Democratic Party against INEC.

“The judgments of the both courts of coordinate jurisdiction has caused unnecessary confusion in the polity. While Justice Muhammed Umar of the Federal High Court has limited INEC’s powers by barring it from imposing deadlines that conflict with statutory provisions, Justice A. K. Omotosho of the same Court has affirmed INEC’s authority to issue timetable that includes timelines for party primaries. INEC has been empowered to choose and pick which of the judgments to complied with.

“The National Judicial Council had repeatedly cautioned Judges to desist from issuing conflicting orders whilst lawyers have equally been warned by the Nigerian Bar Association to stop filing cases that are programmed to cause Judges to issue conflicting orders. In the instant case, Justice Omotosho ought to have allowed the Court of Appeal to determine the validity of the judgment of Justice Muhammed Umar instead of issuing conflicting orders.

“The National Judicial Council and the Nigerian Bar Association should speedily investigate the circumstances surrounding the issuance of conflicting orders in the cases of Youth Party v INEC and Social Democratic Party v INEC.

“Unless the Judges and lawyers involved in the legal charade are called to order, the 2027 election may be sabotaged by Judges and lawyers as was the case in 1993 when the Ibrahim Babangida military junta anchored the annulment of the results of the June 12 presidential election on conflicting orders of Nigerian courts.”

…declares self APC’s only real challenger

…As Onor takes swipes at Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso

By Luminous Jannamike

ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday adopted Senator Sandy Onor as its sole consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election and immediately declared itself the only opposition force capable of taking power from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The adoption also served as a public show of unity by a party seeking to recover from months of internal crisis, with PDP leaders insisting the turmoil was over and that the party was ready to reclaim its place as the country’s main opposition platform ahead of 2027.

Speaking at the event in Abuja, the Chairman of the Presidential Primary Election Committee, Dr Samuel Ortom; the party’s National Chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahman; and Onor all presented the consensus process as evidence that the PDP had regained stability and political direction.

Announcing the outcome of consultations conducted across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Ortom formally declared Onor as the party’s consensus candidate.

Ortom said, “Having conducted consultations across the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, I am pleased to formally announce that we have adopted Professor Sandy Onor as the consensus candidate of our great party for the 2027 presidential election.

“Those in agreement, say ‘Aye.’ Is anybody in disagreement? You may say ‘No.’ The ayes have it.”

The announcement drew loud applause from delegates and party officials as Onor was ushered forward and formally presented as the PDP’s flag bearer.

Earlier, Abdulrahman said the emergence of a sole candidate reflected the collective decision of party leaders and members across the country.

“The chairman of this very important programme today has said everything. We are here for endorsement because we have only one person aspiring to the office of President in 2027,” he said.

Abdulrahman also commended officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for monitoring the party’s congresses, primaries and convention activities across the country.

In his acceptance speech, Onor declared that the PDP had finally moved beyond the prolonged internal battles that weakened the party in recent years.

“Today, we have reclaimed our party, the legacy party, the Peoples Democratic Party. Today, we have a leadership that is united, purposeful and visionary,” he said.

Onor also used the occasion to dismiss the African Democratic Congress, ADC, coalition as an unstable alliance driven more by personal ambition than shared political direction.

He said, “The point I am making is that if you are looking for any party with the capacity to contend with the ruling APC, that party is the PDP.

“Atiku would say, ‘When I started running for the presidency, where were some of them? Were they not in secondary school? Were they not in primary school? Had they even started politics then?’

“We knew nothing would make them step down for one another. There was also a tendency characterised by a messianic complex among people like Obi and Kwankwaso, who felt that if they did not become president, Nigeria would collapse.

“But the drama happened even sooner than we calculated. Before we knew it, people began migrating out of the coalition. If you observed carefully, there was what I call the ‘Andrews Liver Salt effect’, like a bubble that rises suddenly and disappears within days.

“It left the ADC struggling to explain that it was not finished. But we knew the ADC was finished,” he added.

Onor acknowledged that the PDP had gone through difficult internal divisions but insisted the party had now stabilised and was consolidating ahead of the 2027 election.

“Yes, we have had our issues. It is normal and natural. But trust me, we have overcome our worst fears. We have soared beyond our anxieties. We have crossed the Rubicon,” he said.

The PDP presidential candidate also sought to present himself as a unifying national figure.

“I shall maintain a pan-Nigerian disposition in all I do. Citizens of this country will be proud that we have a PDP that is ready to govern well,” he said.

Beyond the politics, Onor said his administration would focus on rural poverty, which he described as a major driver of insecurity and economic hardship across the country.

“We cannot be poor in the midst of so much. Insecurity is fundamentally a function of rural poverty. If local governments are properly funded, many of our young men and women will be meaningfully engaged at that level,” he said.

He argued that stronger local government administration and grassroots investment would help reduce unemployment, banditry and terrorism in many rural communities.

The PDP candidate also dismissed suggestions that the party remained divided, insisting there was only one legally recognised PDP.

“For some time now, the erroneous impression has been created that there are two PDPs. Nothing could be further from the truth.

“There is only one PDP,” he said, insisting the party had moved beyond the divisions that nearly crippled it.

Iran accused the United States of breaching their ceasefire Tuesday and warned it was ready to retaliate after overnight US strikes targeting Iranian missile sites and mine-laying boats threatened a deal to end the war.

The Brent benchmark oil price jumped up by more than four percent after US Central Command announced the new wave of bombings, and China urged both sides to respect the truce and to resolve their dispute peacefully.

According to the maritime safety monitor UKMTO, a blast damaged a tanker on the waterline off Oman — although the crew and vessel were reportedly safe after what was described as an “external explosion”.

Iranian state media reported overnight blasts in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, near the Strait of Hormuz, and the country’s Revolutionary Guards said its forces had downed a US drone entering its airspace and had fired at an F-35 fighter jet.

“The US terrorist army, continuing its illegal and unjustified actions since the ceasefire … has, in the past 48 hours, committed a gross violation of the ceasefire in the Hormozgan region,” the Iranian foreign ministry said.

It added that Tehran “will not leave any evil unanswered and will not hesitate to defend the Iranian nation,” without elaborating.

In a statement marking the start of the Eid al-Adha holiday, Tehran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei declared that Washington was losing its influence in the Middle East and warned countries in the region to stop hosting bases from which the US could launch attacks.

The United States, he said in a written statement, “in addition to no longer having any safe haven in the region for aggression and the establishment of military bases, is moving further and further away from its former position with each passing day”.

Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for US Central Command, said: “US forces conducted self-defence strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces.”

– ‘We’ll see’ –

He gave few details of the attacks and said only that the targets included missile launch sites and boats trying to “emplace mines.”

Despite the strikes, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that a deal remained within reach.

But he remained firm on the Strait of Hormuz, the key oil and gas shipping route which Iran is seeking to control.

“There were some talks going on in Qatar today, so we’ll see if we can make progress. I think it’s a lot of talking back and forth going on about specific language in the initial document, so it’ll take a few days,” Rubio told reporters, during a visit to India.

He said the strait was “going to be open one way or the other,” adding: “What’s happening there is unlawful, it’s illegal, it’s unsustainable for the world, it’s unacceptable.”

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB said a top delegation returned from a two-day visit to Qatar on Tuesday and Tehran said it was finalising a 14-point framework for a deal on ending the war, which began with US-Israeli airstrikes on February 28.

In a telephone conversation with Qatari ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Tuesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country was “ready to reach a respectful framework to end the war,” according to IRIB.

Tasnim news agency said Tehran’s negotiators are seeking the release of frozen assets, with half to be made available once an initial memorandum of understanding is signed.

“Iran’s frozen assets are to be released during the course of the negotiations, and this amount is estimated at $24 billion in accordance with the 14-point memorandum of understanding,” Tasnim said.

– Internet partially restored –

The new US strikes threaten the ceasefire that began on April 8 as the US and Iran struggle to reach an accord.

China, Washington’s great power rival and a major energy importer, expressed concern.

“We urge the parties concerned to fulfil their ceasefire commitments, resolve disputes through peaceful means… and promote the early restoration of peace,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters.

Hopes of an accord took another blow when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to “crush” Hezbollah in Lebanon on Monday.

Iran has demanded that any peace accord apply to the fighting in Lebanon as well.

An Israeli military official told AFP on Tuesday they were expanding their ground operations inside Lebanon, sending forces beyond their self-declared ‘Yellow Line’, already 10 kilometres (six miles) deep into the country.

In better news for Iranians, internet connectivity saw a “partial restoration” after nearly three months of blackout, monitor NetBlocks said on Tuesday, calling it the “longest nationwide internet shutdown in modern history”.

Iran’s vice president later confirmed the “first step” had been taken towards restoring the internet for Iranians, adding that the demands of Iranians “will be fulfilled”.

“Since a few minutes ago I could open international websites using my home internet provider,” said a 22-year-old woman from the western city of Kermanshah who declined to be named, but she said she still needed VPNs for social media.

The French Open is traditionally the most unpredictable Grand Slam tournament. The clay courts of Roland Garros slow the ball down and even out the chances for players. This year, the men’s draw looks almost predetermined, while the women’s side features five serious title contenders. One event, two completely different storylines, and both promise to be spectacular!

Roland Garros 2026: Key dates and figures
The French Open (Roland Garros) is the second Grand Slam tournament of the season. Main draw matches are held from May 24 to June 7 in Paris. The event’s prize pool stands at €61.7 million – a record in the competition’s history (+9.5% compared to 2025).

Men’s tournament: Favorites and expectations
The biggest news in the men’s draw is the withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz. The winner of the last two French Open titles and the 2026 Australian Open will miss not only Roland Garros but also Wimbledon due to a wrist injury.
The absence of the tournament’s top favorite opens the door for Jannik Sinner. The Italian is in phenomenal form: 29 consecutive match wins and five straight ATP 1000 titles. The French Open remains the only Grand Slam trophy missing from his collection. In last year’s final, Sinner lost to Alcaraz despite holding match points.
So who can stop Sinner? Among the main contenders are the experienced Alexander Zverev, who has reached three Grand Slam finals, including the 2024 French Open final, and Casper Ruud – one of the world’s strongest clay-court specialists (French Open finalist in 2022 and 2023). Novak Djokovic should not be overlooked either. Despite his age and limited match practice this season, he still reached the Australian Open final and, in 2025, advanced to the Roland Garros semifinals.

Women’s tournament: Open race

The women’s draw at the French Open 2026 is the complete opposite of the men’s competition.
The main favorites are Iga Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka, who are considered almost equal on the AfroPari platform. Świątek is a four-time French Open champion (2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024) and the main benchmark in the women’s draw. However, she could face Jelena Ostapenko in the third round. Their head-to-head record stands at 0-6 in favor of the Latvian. If Świątek cannot finally break that losing streak, she may have to forget about a fifth French Open title.
Aryna Sabalenka currently tops the WTA rankings, but Roland Garros has yet to submit to her. Her best result at the tournament was last year’s final, where she lost to Coco Gauff. The reigning champion, meanwhile, returns to defend her title and should certainly not be underestimated.
Among the other contenders are Elena Rybakina, winner of the 2026 Australian Open, and 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva, a semifinalist at the 2024 French Open. It is also worth noting that none of the favorites won the clay-court warm-up tournaments – Marta Kostyuk took the title in Madrid, while Elina Svitolina triumphed in Rome. Clay truly levels the playing field!

Conclusion

Roland Garros has a knack for surprising, and 2026 is unlikely to be an exception. Who will lift the trophy on Court Philippe-Chatrier? We’ll find out soon.
Follow the matches together with AfroPari and don’t forget about the Big Slam, Big Returns promo, where you can get up to 75% cashback on bets placed on Grand Slam events.
Visit the platform now – the tournament is in full swing!

Former Minister of Transportation and presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected the outcome of the party’s presidential primaries, describing the results announced as “concocted” and inconsistent with democratic principles.

Amaechi made his position known in a statement posted on his X platform on Wednesday, following the conclusion of the ADC presidential primaries across the country.

The former Rivers State governor alleged that the exercise was marred by widespread voter disenfranchisement, claiming that a large percentage of party members were denied the opportunity to participate in the process.

“I unequivocally reject the concocted results being announced,” Amaechi stated.

He recalled that he had earlier pledged to accept the outcome of the primaries only if the process was free, fair, and transparent, insisting that the conduct of the election failed to meet those standards.

“I had initially stated that I will only accept the outcome of the primaries if the process was free, fair, and transparent, and I stand by my word,” he said.

Amaechi argued that the exercise did not reflect the values the ADC claimed to represent as an opposition platform seeking to provide Nigerians with an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, “There’s no way that about eighty percent of members of the party were not allowed to vote, and you expect me to accept such results.”

He further accused the party leadership of engaging in practices similar to those it had consistently criticized in the ruling APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“A party that criticizes the ruling APC and INEC for vote buying, rigging and writing of results, cannot be engaged in vote buying, writing of results, and other electoral malpractices that lead to the disenfranchisement of voters who are party members,” he said.

Amaechi maintained that the vision behind the ADC was to provide a credible platform capable of amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerians and rescuing the country from what he described as “impunity and gross mismanagement.”

“The whole idea of the ADC was to give the Nigerian people a platform, to amplify the voices of the downtrodden, and make Nigeria a better place for everyone irrespective of backgrounds, ethnicity, or religion,” he added.

The former minister’s rejection of the results is expected to heighten tensions within the ADC as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.

…Warns Against Hijack of Party Ahead of 2027
…Says NDC Will Not Serve Personal Presidential Ambitions
…Party Inaugurates 21-Member Selection Committee
…Peter Obi Assures Aspirants of Fairness and Inclusion

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to introduce electronic voting for its future primary elections as part of efforts to strengthen internal democracy and build what it described as a modern, transparent, and institution-driven political party.

The National Leader of the NDC and former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, disclosed this on Monday night during the inaugural Aspirants Dinner organised for party stakeholders and screened aspirants in Abuja.

Dickson said the proposed reform was aimed at deepening participation within the party and ensuring that future primaries are credible, transparent, and technologically driven.

He explained that the party had already developed a mobile voting application that would eventually allow registered members to vote directly from their mobile phones during party primaries and congresses.

According to him, the platform was initially scheduled for deployment but was temporarily suspended to allow further testing and coordination with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Electronic voting, we have designed it and even set to be deployed, but because of the time we have, INEC too says they want to be there, so we are working out those minor details,” Dickson said.

“But after now, any other primary in NDC in the next three months down, and certainly by the next round of elections, every registered voter will use their phone to vote because that is the direction Nigerian general elections should be going.”

The former governor said the NDC was determined to become a model political party founded on transparency, innovation, and democratic principles rather than personal political interests.

‘NDC Not a One-Man Show’

Dickson also warned against attempts to turn the party into what he described as a “special-purpose vehicle” for the ambitions of any individual politician ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His remarks come amid growing political realignments involving major opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“We are not building a special-purpose vehicle for any individual,” Dickson declared.

“We are building together a political party that will stand the test of time. We want to build a party of principles, a party with a clear ideology of service, a party that is not a one-man show.”

He likened the NDC’s long-term vision to enduring political institutions such as South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) and major political parties in Europe and the Americas.

The senator representing Bayelsa West further disclosed that the party had inaugurated a 21-member Selection Committee to work with party organs and caucus leaders in streamlining the candidate selection process following the screening of aspirants for governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly positions.

Dickson stressed that the NDC was building leadership structures from the ward to the national level to encourage grassroots participation, inclusion, and mentorship opportunities for youths and women.

He acknowledged that time constraints and the evolving nature of the reforms meant the party could not guarantee a completely flawless process immediately, but insisted the leadership remained committed to fairness and transparency.

“We want to be a democratic movement where a child of nobody can join the NDC and still be given a fair chance,” he said.

“All you need is your registration card in the NDC. The party will provide mentorship, political enlightenment, and leadership opportunities.”

Peter Obi Assures Aspirants

Also speaking at the event, the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, assured aspirants that their sacrifices and contributions to the party would not go unnoticed, even if they eventually failed to secure tickets during the primaries.

Obi praised aspirants for remaining committed to nation-building despite the country’s current political and economic challenges.

“I am here this evening to assure you that your sacrifice will not be in vain,” Obi said.

“All of us will not succeed, all of us will not be selected, all of us will not be winners, but it is time we begin to recognise people who have worked hard and sacrificed for this country.”

The former Anambra State governor urged members not to abandon the political process because of temporary setbacks, stressing that building a better Nigeria would require patience, sacrifice, and sustained commitment.

Obi also reflected on his recent visit to South Africa, where he met political leaders and members of the Nigerian community over concerns about the treatment of Nigerians abroad.

According to him, many Nigerians living overseas expressed frustration over worsening conditions at home, with some saying they preferred remaining abroad despite facing hardship.

“If things were working in Nigeria the way they should, most of our people abroad would not be there,” Obi said.

“Nigeria once played a major role in securing nations and leading peacekeeping operations globally, but today Nigeria cannot secure itself. That is unacceptable.”

Galadima Urges Patience Among Aspirants

Meanwhile, NDC chieftain Buba Galadima appealed to aspirants to remain patient and committed to the party despite intense competition for tickets across constituencies.

Galadima noted that some constituencies had as many as 17 aspirants contesting for a single ticket and urged unsuccessful contenders not to abandon the party.

“Only one person can emerge in each constituency, but those who do not secure tickets today should remain and continue to build the party,” he said.

“When we form government, everybody will have enough to contribute and participate.”

Several aspirants who attended the dinner also commended the screening process conducted by the party leadership, describing it as transparent, merit-driven, and credible.

Some defectors from other political parties cited insecurity, corruption, and economic hardship as reasons for joining the NDC, while others pledged loyalty to the party regardless of the outcome of the primaries.

An aspirant for the Rivers East Senatorial District, Dr Benjamin Okuolo, described the 2027 elections as a contest between the ruling establishment and Nigerians seeking change through the NDC platform.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has extended warm greetings to Muslims across Nigeria on the occasion of this year’s Eid el-Kabir, urging continued support for the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, Yilwatda described Eid el-Kabir as a sacred festival embodying faith, sacrifice, obedience, love and devotion to Almighty Allah.

He noted that the celebration remains one of the most significant in Islam, symbolising the virtues of selflessness, unity, compassion, tolerance and complete submission to the will of God, as demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim.

According to the APC chairman, the spiritual lessons of the festival are particularly relevant at a critical stage in Nigeria’s development, stressing that sacrifice, patience, perseverance and collective responsibility are essential to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

Yilwatda called on Nigerians, especially the Muslim Ummah, to continue promoting peaceful coexistence, national unity and harmony across ethnic, religious and political divides. He added that the Sallah celebration should further strengthen bonds of love, understanding and brotherhood among citizens.

He also urged citizens to support the administration of President Tinubu, noting that ongoing reforms are aimed at repositioning the country for sustainable economic growth, improved infrastructure, enhanced national security and job creation.

While acknowledging that the reforms may demand patience and shared sacrifice, Yilwatda maintained that they are necessary steps towards restoring economic stability, strengthening institutions and securing a better future for coming generations.

Expressing confidence in the administration, he said Nigeria would emerge stronger, more resilient and globally competitive under Tinubu’s leadership.

The APC chairman further appealed to Nigerians to use the Eid period to pray for the nation’s peace, unity and progress, as well as for wisdom and guidance for leaders at all levels.

He also prayed that Almighty Allah accepts the sacrifices and acts of worship of the faithful, granting peace, joy, good health and abundant blessings to all.

Yilwatda concluded by wishing Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the world a peaceful and memorable Eid el-Kabir celebration.

…as judge orders his transfer to Kuje prison

By Ikechukwu Nnochiri

ABUJA — The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, gave the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) the nod to transfer the convicted former Minister of Power, Mr. Saleh Mamman, to Kuje prison.

Mamman was on May 13 sentenced to 75 years in prison for stealing public funds totaling about ₦33.8 billion.

The convict was sentenced in absentia after he jumped bail and failed to appear before the court for the conclusion of his trial.

Even though his legal team denied knowledge of his whereabouts, he was subsequently apprehended at his hideout in Kaduna State.

Meanwhile, the EFCC on Tuesday produced him before the court, which had issued a warrant for his arrest.

During the proceedings, a man, Shamsudeen Mohammed, who identified himself as a relative of the former Minister, exposed how the convict fled Abuja in a chartered taxi.

Mohammed revealed that although the ex-Minister was in Abuja within the period he was convicted, he escaped to Kaduna State two days after he was sentenced.

He, however, added that Mamman was very sick and needed medical attention, which he could not receive from a hospital for fear of being arrested.

“I was helping him to take his traditional medicine. He was brought by taxi from Abuja to Kaduna,” the convict’s relative added.

Mohammed told the court he did not know the owner of the apartment where Mamman hid in Rigasa, Kaduna State.

“I don’t know the owner of the apartment. It was a rented one,” he stated.

On his part, Mamman, who looked solemn in the dock, told the court that he stayed away from the proceedings because he was battling ill health.

His attempt to plead for leniency was rebuffed by trial Justice James Omotosho, who took time to recap the court’s judgment for him.

Afterwards, Justice Omotosho drew the convict’s attention to the fact that his 75-year jail sentence would start to run immediately after the proceedings.

“The sentence starts to run from today. You were in Abuja when the judgment was passed. You were in Abuja when the sentence was passed.

“You left alone in a taxi to Kaduna. I have done my work. I just have to inform you because today is the commencement of your sentence.

“I will read the judgment for you to know why the conviction and sentencing were done,” Justice Omotosho stated.

He ordered the EFCC to hand over the convicted former Minister to the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Kuje, Abuja for the commencement of his jail term.

Furthermore, the EFCC applied for a consequential order for the forfeiture of five new properties it said were traced to the convict.

The prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, told the court that the assets, which are in Abuja, are: Walijam Apartments, located at No. 43, Plot 435 Lobito Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja; Bloom Luxury Suites Nigeria Limited, located at No. 5, Amana Crescent, New Estate Unguwan Rimi, Kaduna State; a mansion at No. 11 Misratah Street, Wuse 2, Abuja; a mansion at No. 13 Misratah Street, Wuse 2, Abuja; and A.U.A. Plaza, situated on Plot 734 Kade Street, Wuse 2, Abuja.

However, because the convict had no legal representation during the proceedings, Justice Omotosho said he would, in the interest of justice, defer the hearing of the application to enable him to secure the services of a lawyer of his choice.

“For the forfeiture of additional properties, the court will grant an adjournment for hearing to enable the convict to defend himself,” the trial judge held.

Mamman told the court that he had not been in contact with his counsel since he was arrested and taken into custody by the EFCC on May 19.

Justice Omotosho directed that he should be personally served with a copy of the forfeiture application, and slated June 8 to hear it.

The court had convicted Mamman on all 12 counts of fraud and money laundering charges the EFCC preferred against him.

He was handed seven years each on 10 counts of the charge, and jailed for three years and two years on counts four and five respectively.

Justice Omotosho held that the sentences should run consecutively without the option of a fine, except on count four, for which he allowed the payment of a ₦10 million fine.

The court ordered the forfeiture of various foreign currencies recovered from the convict, as well as four choice properties in Abuja traced to him.

It directed the convict to repay to the national treasury the sum of ₦22 billion meant for the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Plant projects.

The forfeited properties included a four-bedroom duplex at Kado District, Abuja; two semi-detached houses; and another building located in the Wuse District, Abuja.

Only a few competitions in football carry the aura, pressure, relevance, and prestige of the UEFA Champions League.

Across generations, the tournament has produced legendary players, unforgettable finals and dynasties that shaped European football history. Yet, behind every triumph on the biggest stage stands a coach whose tactical brilliance, leadership and personality guided teams through Europe’s most demanding nights.

According to UEFA’s official Champions League records, only a select group of coaches have managed to conquer Europe multiple times, while just a handful have done so with different clubs. While players often dominate headlines, these managers built the systems, mentality and culture that turned elite squads into European champions.

The competition has often been defined by managers capable of mastering pressure and delivering glory repeatedly, which makes the list a unique cast.

Here are the coaches with the most UEFA Champions League/European Cup titles in history.

Carlo Ancelotti – 5 titles

Titles: AC Milan (2003, 2007), Real Madrid (2014, 2022, 2024)

No manager in European football history has conquered the Champions League more than Ancelotti. Calm under pressure and admired for his man-management style, the Italian transformed elite dressing rooms into winning machines across two football eras.

After leading AC Milan to European glory in 2003 and 2007, Ancelotti famously guided Real Madrid to “La Decima” in 2014, ending the club’s long wait for a 10th European crown. He then returned to win again in 2022 and 2024, extending his record to five titles.

UEFA also recognises him as one of the few men to win the competition both as a player and as a coach, underlining his place among football’s greatest figures.

Bob Paisley – 3 titles

Titles: Liverpool (1977, 1978, 1981)

Quiet, modest and deeply respected at Liverpool, Paisley succeeded the legendary Bill Shankly and somehow elevated the club even further.

Within nine years, he turned Liverpool into Europe’s dominant force, winning three European Cups in five seasons. His tactical intelligence and ability to rebuild winning teams helped establish Liverpool’s continental pedigree during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The 1981 triumph against Real Madrid in Paris sealed his place among football immortals.

Zinédine Zidane – 3 titles

Titles: Real Madrid (2016, 2017, 2018)

Zidane achieved what many thought impossible in the modern era. By winning the Champions League three consecutive times, he achieved an impressive record which might remain unbroken in years to come.

Already revered as one of football’s greatest players, the Frenchman smoothly transitioned into coaching and built a Real Madrid side defined by experience, mentality and ruthless efficiency.

Between 2016 and 2018, Madrid dominated Europe under Zidane, defeating Atlético Madrid, Juventus and Liverpool in three finals. UEFA records show he remains the only manager to win three straight Champions League titles in the modern format.

Pep Guardiola – 3 titles

Titles: Barcelona (2009, 2011), Manchester City (2023)

Guardiola’s influence on modern football stretches far beyond trophies, but his Champions League success remains one of the defining aspects of his managerial legacy.

He revolutionised Barcelona with a possession-based style that produced one of football’s greatest teams, winning the title in 2009 and 2011 with stars like Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta.

After years of near misses at Bayern Munich and Manchester City, Guardiola finally delivered City’s first Champions League crown in 2023, completing the club’s historic treble.

José Mourinho – 2 titles

Titles: Porto (2004), Inter Milan (2010)

Few coaches have embraced the drama of European football quite like Mourinho.

He stunned Europe in 2004 by guiding Porto to an unlikely Champions League triumph before repeating the feat with Inter Milan in 2010, where his tactical discipline and defensive structure powered the Italian side to a famous treble.

Mourinho remains one of the rare managers to win the competition with two different clubs.

Jupp Heynckes – 2 titles

Titles: Real Madrid (1998), Bayern Munich (2013)

Heynckes waited 15 years between his two Champions League triumphs — the longest gap recorded between title wins by a coach.

He first guided Real Madrid to European success in 1998 before returning in spectacular fashion with Bayern Munich in 2013, leading the German giants to a historic treble-winning campaign.

His Bayern side is widely regarded as one of the strongest teams of the modern era.

Luis Enrique – 2 titles

Titles: Barcelona (2015), Paris Saint-Germain (2025)

Luis Enrique joined an elite company after leading Paris Saint-Germain to their first Champions League title in 2025.

Already a European champion with Barcelona in 2015, the Spaniard became only the seventh coach to win the competition with multiple clubs. His PSG side’s emphatic victory over Inter in Munich cemented his growing reputation as one of modern football’s elite tacticians.

UEFA notes that he could become a three-time winner if he continues PSG’s rise in Europe. PSG will face Arsenal in the Champions League final on May 30, a chance for Enrique to claim a second consecutive title with the French club.

Sir Alex Ferguson – 2 titles

Titles: Manchester United (1999, 2008)

Ferguson’s first Champions League triumph remains one of football’s greatest comeback stories.

Manchester United’s dramatic 1999 final victory over Bayern Munich completed an iconic treble-winning season. Nearly a decade later, Ferguson lifted the trophy again in 2008 after defeating Chelsea in Moscow.

His longevity and ability to rebuild successful squads across eras remain unmatched in English football.

Ottmar Hitzfeld – 2 titles

Titles: Borussia Dortmund (1997), Bayern Munich (2001)

Hitzfeld carved his name into Champions League history by winning with two different German clubs.

He first led Borussia Dortmund to a stunning victory against Juventus in 1997 before guiding Bayern Munich to European glory in 2001 after suffering heartbreak in the 1999 final.

His tactical adaptability made him one of Europe’s most respected managers.

Arrigo Sacchi – 2 titles

Titles: AC Milan (1989, 1990)

Sacchi changed football tactics forever, and many modern tactical systems still carry traces of his philosophy.

His AC Milan side, driven by pressing, defensive organisation and attacking movement, dominated Europe at the end of the 1980s. Back-to-back European titles in 1989 and 1990 transformed Milan into one of the greatest club teams ever assembled.

By Adeola Badru

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the worsening security situation in the country, saying the President should resign if he cannot protect Nigerians.

Adebayo spoke with journalists on Tuesday shortly after a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in Ibadan.

He said his visit was aimed at showing solidarity with the people and government of Oyo State following recent security concerns in parts of the state.

According to him, the insecurity being experienced in Oyo reflects a broader national crisis, which he blamed on what he described as the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.

“The reason why we came here is to give solidarity to the people of Oyo State and the government of Oyo State, and to sympathise with the communities. What Oyo State is going through today is what many states are going through,” Adebayo said.

The SDP chieftain accused President Tinubu of failing in his role as Commander-in-Chief, arguing that insecurity had spread to regions previously regarded as relatively peaceful.

“And that’s because President Bola Tinubu has failed to do his job as Commander-in-Chief. If you cannot secure your state, which is the heart of Yorubaland, what is the use of being government at all?” he said.

Adebayo further alleged that security funds were being diverted toward political activities rather than addressing insecurity across the country.

“The state government is a victim of the failure of the federal government. President Bola Tinubu is sitting on top of heavy security votes, which is used to destabilise political parties, instead of applying it for the armed forces to secure the country,” he alleged.

He warned that the country’s security challenges should no longer be treated lightly, citing killings and attacks reported in several parts of Nigeria.

“You cannot run an economy, you cannot provide jobs, yet you cannot secure lives. What is the use? Nigerian people need to understand that it’s no longer a joke,” he said.

Adebayo also called on the President to either decisively confront criminal elements or resign from office.

“I told President Tinubu sometime last year that you have to use your gun to kill the terrorists or use a pen to resign. If you can’t do it, quit the job. Other people will do it,” he stated.

He expressed concern over attacks on civilians and military personnel, describing the country’s security environment as deteriorating.

“That teacher who got beheaded, if he wanted to join the army, he would have joined the army. Now we are in a country where generals are being killed like chicken,” he said.

The SDP presidential candidate urged the President to focus on governance and national security rather than politics, while also calling for improved welfare and operational support for the armed forces.

“Leave politics aside. Focus on your job as Commander-in-Chief. Nigerian armed forces are capable of defending not only Nigeria but the entire West Africa, if only they had a Commander-in-Chief who can lead them properly,” he added.

…Warns Against ‘Dictatorship’ and Imposition of Candidates

By Luminous Jannamike

Fresh crisis has erupted within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State following a lawsuit filed by a frontline aspirant for the Zamfara North Senatorial District, Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, challenging the party’s senatorial primary election.

Shinkafi dragged the APC, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Senator Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u before the Federal High Court in Gusau over the disputed primary allegedly conducted on May 19, 2026.

The aspirant is asking the court to nullify the process that produced Senator Ya’u as the APC candidate for Zamfara North Senatorial District, arguing that the party neither conducted a valid direct primary nor adopted a lawful consensus arrangement before announcing the winner.

The development was contained in a statement personally signed by Shinkafi, who is also a patron of the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council 2023.

In the suit marked FHC/GS/CS/6/2026 and dated May 25, 2026, Shinkafi urged the court to interpret relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and determine whether the APC complied with the law and its constitution in the conduct of the primary exercise.

Among the issues raised before the court is whether the APC was legally required under Sections 84, 86, and 87 of the Electoral Act 2026 to nominate candidates through either direct primaries or a properly executed consensus process.

The APC chieftain is also seeking an order compelling the party to conduct a fresh primary election involving all cleared aspirants for the Zamfara North Senatorial District ticket.

In a 21-paragraph affidavit filed in support of the suit, Shinkafi stated that he purchased the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms for ₦20 million on April 30, 2026.

He explained that he subsequently submitted the completed forms and was screened alongside Hanafi Musa Moriki and Senator Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u, with all three aspirants reportedly cleared to contest the primary election.

According to him, there was no consensus agreement among the aspirants prior to the declaration of a candidate.

“There was no consensus amongst the cleared aspirants,” Shinkafi stated.

He further maintained that he neither withdrew from the race nor endorsed any aspirant as a consensus candidate.

“I did not endorse any aspirant as the consensus candidate,” he said.

Shinkafi alleged that due process was not followed before Senator Ya’u was announced as the party’s consensus candidate for the senatorial district.

“There was no written consent from me indicating my voluntary withdrawal from the race,” he added.

The APC stalwart warned that arbitrary imposition of candidates could undermine internal democracy within political parties and weaken Nigeria’s democratic process.

According to him, the suit is also seeking a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants and their agents from further alleged breaches of constitutional and statutory provisions governing party primaries.

He also asked the court to direct the APC and INEC to uphold internal democracy and ensure credible nomination processes in line with the rule of law.

Shinkafi argued that both the legal system and democratic order could suffer irreparable damage if the court fails to grant the reliefs sought.

He disclosed that before approaching the court, he had petitioned the APC National Chairman and the chairman of the party’s Senate Primary Election Committee over what he described as the arbitrary imposition of a candidate.

As of the time of filing this report, no hearing date had been fixed for the suit, which is expected to further heighten tensions within the APC in Zamfara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Party Waxing Stronger Ahead of 2027 Polls — Alabere

By Dayo Johnson, Akure

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged winner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election in Ondo State, securing victory across the state’s 18 local government areas.

Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. Ajibola Samuel, who announced the results, said Atiku polled a total of 18,287 votes to clinch the party’s ticket in the state.

According to the results, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, came second with 6,031 votes, while Hayatudeen Muhammed secured 837 votes.

Speaking after the announcement, the Ondo State Chairman of the ADC, Hon. Tola Alabere, expressed confidence in the growing strength of the party ahead of future elections.

He said the ADC was well positioned to challenge the ruling parties and promised that the party would “spring surprises” in subsequent polls.

“We have prepared for them, and you can see it yourself now. We are on ground,” Alabere stated.

The party chairman urged residents of Ondo State to reflect on issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, and the rising cost of living when making political decisions.

He said the ADC had enough issues to campaign on, adding that the people of the state would listen to the party once campaigns commence fully.

Alabere also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to weaken opposition parties, but claimed the strategy was failing as more Nigerians continued to join the ADC.

He cited the registration of over 4,000 new members in Jigawa State on the same day the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) allegedly removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from the party’s portal.

The ADC chairman further disclosed that former Senator Ayo Akinyelure had joined the party and had been adopted as the ADC candidate for Ondo Central Senatorial District.

He also announced Hon. Gbenga Edema as the party’s candidate for the Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

“So we are waxing stronger every day. People are joining us every day, and with the discontentment in APC, I can tell you that so many of their members will vote for us,” Alabere said.

Former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has distanced himself from a viral report claiming he won 45 million votes in a purported presidential primary election of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), describing the report as false and misleading.

The claim, which circulated widely on social media and some online platforms, alleged that Obi emerged victorious in an imaginary party primary held by the NDC.

However, the Peter Obi Media Office has dismissed the report in its entirety, stating that no such political party primary ever took place.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the media office spokesperson, Ibrahim Umar, the figures being circulated were described as “entirely false” and without any basis in reality.

“The attention of the Peter Obi Media Office has been drawn to certain 45 million primary vote figures currently circulating on social media and various news platforms, purporting to be the breakdown of official results from an imaginary primary by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ascribed to Mr Peter Obi,” the statement read.

The office clarified that no primary election was conducted and no results or figures were generated from any such process, urging the public, supporters, and media organisations to disregard the report.

It further stressed that official information regarding Mr. Obi’s political engagements would only be released through verified and authorised communication channels.

The statement also accused those behind the publication of attempting to misrepresent and drag the former presidential candidate into fraudulent narratives.
