By Adesina Wahab

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Ogun State Axis, has written the National President of the body, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, over attempt by some people to cause crisis in the association.

In a statement endorsed by the leaders of various institutions in the state, the group called on the NANS president not to allow anybody to hoodwink him into taking unguided decisions regarding the state of affairs of the association in the axis.

The statement was endorsed by the SUG President, Olabisi Onabanjo University, the SUG President, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, the SUG President, D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, the SUG President, Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, the SUG President, Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences (OSPOHAS), Ilese-Ijebu, the SUG President, Federal Polytechnic Ilaro (now Federal University of Technology, Ilaro), the SUG President, Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo, and the SUG President, Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade, Saapade.

“We, the undersigned Students’ Union Presidents under the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Ogun State Axis, write to respectfully inform the general public and most importantly the National President of our great Association, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, of our collective position regarding the artificial crisis currently being sponsored by some unscrupulous elements in the Gateway State.

“First, we wish to categorically state that at no time was there any Senate sitting in Ogun State Axis where a decision was taken to suspend or remove any duly elected executives of NANS/JCC Ogun State for alleged constitutional violations. Such claims are false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to create confusion within the student community and destabilize the peaceful structure of NANS in Ogun State.

“Secondly, the statement purportedly signed by some senators contains signatures of institutions that are unknown to the constitutional structure of NANS, as some of the listed schools are not accredited institutions under NANS and do not have recognized Students’ Union Governments (SUGs) or legitimate student representatives. This clearly exposes the fraudulent nature of the said statement and the desperation of those attempting to destabilize NANS Ogun State Axis.

“Furthermore, it is important to clearly state that the Chairman of NANS Ogun JCC remains the legitimate and constitutionally recognized leader, having personally mobilized and presented senators from Ogun State who were duly accredited at the last NANS National Convention and the Zone D South-West Convention, where he was officially recognized and accredited as the JCC Chairman. This clearly establishes his legitimacy and acceptance within the constitutional framework of NANS.

“It is also necessary to clarify that the Chairman is a conversion student of Federal University of Oye Ekiti Affiliated with Federal Polytechnic of Ilaro FPI with Full-Time (FT) status with matriculation number FTP/EEE/25/0116401 and not a part-time student, contrary to false claims being circulated to discredit his leadership. These misleading narratives are politically motivated and aimed at creating unnecessary tension and division among student leaders in Ogun State.

“We also find it disturbing that a Chairman who has served diligently for over 13 months, working tirelessly to unite students, strengthen institutional representation, and maintain stability within NANS Ogun JCC, is now being subjected to victimization and political attacks driven by selfish interests of a few stakeholders.

“The recent statement credited to the Senate President has unfortunately created tension, confusion, and unnecessary anxiety among student leaders, stakeholders, and even security operatives in Ogun State, as it portrays a position that does not reflect the true constitutional reality of NANS Ogun State Axis.

“For us to recognize the legitimacy of the directive of the Senate President, the Senate President must produce the notice of Senate sitting, the attendance list of the Senators, the venue where the sitting held and the minutes of such Senate Sitting. The NANS Senate which is saddled with upholding the constitution must not be found to be breaking it.

“Also, Article 8, subsection 3: VI clearly stipulates the specific cases in which the Senate is empowered to remove a NANS Officer which is: negligence of duty, embezzlement of any form or any form misappropriation of funds. The issue of eligibility is clearly not in the prerogative of the NANS Senate and as such the Senate President clearly acted outside of his constitutional powers.

“It is therefore instructive to note that Such a development is capable of disrupting the peaceful atmosphere within the student community and undermining the credibility of NANS National.

“We respectfully urge the National President to use his good office to liaise with the NANS Senate President to thoroughly investigate the matter and revisit his position, in order to restore clarity, peace, and constitutional order within NANS Ogun State Axis.

“We urge the National President to publicly clarify that the said position is not the official verdict of NANS National, so as to clear the air and prevent further tension and misinformation within the student community and among security agencies.

“We request the necessary support and institutional backing to peacefully conclude the NANS Ogun State Axis transition process already in the pipeline, especially now that the Pre-Convention has been successfully held and the I-CPC Committee has been constituted and announced.

“We appeal that the I-CPC Committee be given every necessary support to conduct a peaceful, credible, transparent, and inclusive convention that reflects the collective interest and democratic will of all Nigerian students in Ogun State.

“We want to clearly state that the Senate arm and constitutionally recognized Students’ Union Presidents in Ogun State remain committed to peace, unity, stability, and the collective progress of Nigerian students across the state. We will not allow the selfish interests of a few individuals to destabilize the structure, credibility, and democratic foundation of our Association.

“We therefore call on all well-meaning stakeholders, student leaders, security agencies, and the general public to disregard any false narratives or misleading statements being circulated in the name of NANS Ogun Senators, as due process and constitutional procedures must always be respected in the affairs of NANS.

“Finally, we reaffirm our loyalty and confidence in the leadership of the National President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja GCNS, and we trust in his capacity to ensure that justice, fairness, unity, and the rule of law prevail in NANS Ogun State Axis.

“Thank you for your urgent attention and commitment to protecting the integrity of NANS.”

The crisis in Ogbomosoland has taken a dramatic turn as a former lawmaker, Senator Hamzat Adeseun, resigned from his position as the Mayegun of Ogbomosoland, citing concerns over leadership style, rising tension, and alleged divisive actions within the ancient town.

Adeseun’s resignation comes weeks after the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, in a letter dated March 23, 2026, and signed by the Palace Secretary, Toyin Ajamu, announced his indefinite suspension from the chieftaincy title over alleged acts of insubordination and disrespect to the palace.

However, in a separate letter addressed to the monarch, Adeseun declared that his resignation takes immediate effect, noting that the decision had been under consideration since the early months of the king’s ascension to the throne.

He explained that he initially delayed stepping down out of respect for the institution of the Sounship and in honour of the late Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, who conferred the title on him about five years ago in recognition of his contributions to the development of Ogbomosoland.

The former Mayegun said recent developments and what he described as the monarch’s actions compelled him to formally disengage from the palace.

Speaking further at a press conference, Adeseun raised alarm over what he described as a growing leadership crisis in Ogbomoso, alleging that the monarch’s style of leadership has undermined the long-standing peace and unity the town is known for.

He described Ogbomoso as historically accommodating and tolerant, warning that its legacy of peaceful coexistence among religious and cultural groups is now under threat.

Adeseun accused the monarch of engaging in supremacy disputes with other traditional rulers in Ogbomosoland, including the Olugbon of Orile Igbon and the Onpetu of Ijeru, despite their established autonomy.

He also alleged interference in religious matters, particularly the leadership tussle involving the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso.

According to him, attempts to remove the Chief Imam and exert control over the Ogbomoso Central Mosque heightened tension within the Muslim community.

The former senator further claimed that notable bodies, including the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Christian Association of Nigeria, had intervened in the dispute without resolution.

Adeseun also accused the monarch of targeting community-based organisations and respected individuals, including socio-cultural groups such as Ogbomoso Parapo Worldwide, whose leadership he said the monarch attempted to dissolve before the courts intervened.

He cited alleged harassment and intimidation of prominent figures, including Dr. Saka Adegbite Balogun and Alhaji Monsur Ayoade Ejide, as well as incidents involving market leaders and grassroots associations who were reportedly subjected to humiliation at the palace.

According to him, such actions have disrupted the long-standing harmony in the town and are not in line with the aspirations of the people.

“In these circumstances, I cannot in good conscience continue to operate as a Chief under your leadership,” Adeseun said.

Highlighting his contributions to the development of Ogbomoso, the former lawmaker listed several projects he facilitated, including the establishment of the National Biotechnology Development Agency centre in Onipanu and the Federal Polytechnic Ayede.

He called on the Oyo State Government and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene to restore peace in the town, warning that continued unrest could pose wider security risks.

Despite his resignation, Adeseun reaffirmed his commitment to the peace, unity, and development of Ogbomosoland, urging all stakeholders to prioritise dialogue and allow peace to reign.

…as Archbishop Ede marks 60th birthday, unveils book on leadership

The Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, has hailed Governor Peter Mbah’s security strategy, include huge investment in technology, urging other Nigerian governors to understudy him.

Aba security described Mbah’s approach as a model for combating insecurity and safeguarding lives and property.

He made the call on Easter Monday during a birthday Eucharistic service held at Wesley Cathedral to mark the 60th anniversary of the Archbishop of the Methodist Archdiocese of Enugu, Most Rev. Christopher Ede, and his twin brother, Hon. Peter Edeh.

Speaking at the service the Prelate recounted his visit to the state’s Command and Control Centre, where he observed what he described as advanced, technology-driven security infrastructure put in place by Governor Mbah.

According to him, the facilities have the capacity to monitor activities across the state in real time and aide swift response to security threats.

“The other day, I was with Governor Peter Mbah. He took me to the Command and Control Centre and I saw the whole Enugu State. And because I wanted to test him, I said, ‘Can you show me where my Archbishop lives?’ and before I knew it, he zoomed the cameras wider and I saw workers walking around… and I said, ‘Oh my God.’”

The Prelate commended the governor for prioritising the safety of residents, noting that his administration had demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting lives and property.

“You’re a man of the people, and when it comes to security you don’t joke with it. Whoever cares for others, I will like to queue with the person,” he added.

In his remarks, Archbishop Ede expressed gratitude to the governor for honouring the occasion, describing his presence as a demonstration of genuine support and appreciation.

“This is a great honour, Your Excellency, that you’ve come here to celebrate us. That tells me it’s not all about our work, but also about appreciating my person and what God is doing through me.

“This church loves you. We stood with you and we’re standing with you. Thank you so much for coming, and we will continue to pray for you,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Governor Mbah, who launched a book authored by the Archbishop, entitled “Start Well, Finish Strong: Leadership Principles for Ministers and Organisational Decision-Makers,” lauded the book as inspirational.

He described the it as both enlightening and impactful, while extolling the virtues of the celebrant as a man of humility, service, and excellence.

“We are here for three reasons: to celebrate the birthday, to celebrate the Archbishop and his twin, and to celebrate what the Archbishop has done,” Mbah said.

“It’s truly a milestone, marking a diamond jubilee. Your life is an epitome of the raw materials of greatness—humility and service,” he added.

The governor noted his personal connection with the Archbishop, recalling their interactions during his campaign period, particularly discussions centred on social services, education, and healthcare.

“You have indeed become a light to many. You’ve shown that we are not restricted by the circumstances of our birth. From humble beginnings, you have risen to inspire countless people,” he said.

Mbah further commended the cleric’s passion for community development, charity, and poverty reduction, describing him as a worthy son of Enugu State whose impact transcends geographical boundaries.

“You’ve taught us that greatness is not about social status, but about service. On a day like this, we can only thank God for your life of inspiration,” the governor concluded.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has disclosed that Nigeria is now ranked the second-largest domestic passenger market in Africa, with over 10.5 million domestic passengers, representing 10 per cent growth.

Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, said the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, recorded one of the strongest performances in air traffic movements in Africa in 2025, growing by 11.8 per cent.

Kuku said in cargo, Lagos ranked among Africa’s leading cargo airports, recording 34.4 per cent growth.

She spoke at the Airports Council International Africa Regional Conference and Exhibition held in Luanda, Angola.

According to her, in domestic traffic, Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, and Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, were ranked among the top 10 airports in Africa for domestic passenger traffic in 2025.

She said: “This sends a very important message: Nigeria is not only preparing to host Africa; Nigeria is also actively participating in shaping the future of African air connectivity. These developments are significant because they mirror the broader direction of our continent.

“We are seeing growth in passenger traffic, stronger cargo performance in key gateways, and rising pressure on airports to modernise, collaborate, and build systems that are more efficient and more resilient. This is why the conversations we have had here matter so much. They are not abstract.”

By Henry Umoru

THE Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, has taken a swipe at Dr. Umar Ardo of the All Democratic Alliance, ADA, saying that he lied over his claims that NDC’s registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, did not follow due process.

In a statement on Monday, NDC’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, said that such a claim is not only mischievous and misleading, but a wicked lie from the pit of hell.

Enekweizu said, “This is not the first time Dr. Ardo would be peddling this same falsehood. We recall that barely 48 hours after INEC announced the registration of both NDC and DLA, Ardo was on an ARISE NEWS programme dishing out the same falsehood about NDC and making insinuations on why it was registered.

“Rather than concern himself with his ADA which failed to scale the INEC hurdle, Ardo had spent a large chunk of his allotted airtime attacking NDC, saying he did not comprehend how the party came to be registered.
“Curiously, more than a month after that ARISE NEWS interview, Ardo has still not made good his promise to approach the Lokoja court that gave the ruling, on the strength of which the NDC was registered by INEC. Rather, he has gone again on Trust TV to repeat the same lies.

“Our position is that Dr. Ardo knows the truth but has chosen to follow the ignoble path of shunning the truth for some selfish or sinister reasons.”
That truth, according to the NDC National Secretary, is that “the processes for the registration of the NDC predates the 2025 date Ardo is bandying about.”

“NDC first applied for registration as far back as 2017. And was among the initial 171 associations that sought registration,” he continued.

“It only approached the court when it felt dissatisfied with the reasons INEC, under Prof. Yakubu, advanced for dropping the party from the process and almost aborting its registration.

“NDC went to court when it was not allowed to proceed to the next stage Dr. Ardo is talking about, be it the last 14 or last 8. We went to court because INEC said the NDC Victory-sign logo of two upward-pointed fingers was similar to the APC Broom logo.

“NDC disagreed with that submission and approached the Federal High Court to challenge that position, insisting it is an abuse of discretion. INEC legal team was served and it appeared at the Court to defend the commission’s position. Before the court, the INEC team affirmed that all the requirements for registration had been made by the NDC, except for the position the commission took on the logo.

“The judge, after listening to all arguments, overruled INEC, saying that the logos were not only clearly different, but that INEC’S position of knocking out NDC on that basis interfered with our fundamental freedom of association, and thereafter ordered INEC to register NDC. The court thus enforced NDC’s right to association and gave an express order for its registration to INEC, an order which INEC complied with and did not appeal.

“It is also instructive to note that the window of time allowed for such an appeal has since elapsed.

“This parly explains the reason why until recently, INEC had yet to reflect the NDC logo or upload it on the INEC website. In the stead of the NDC logo, the electoral commission simply put ‘COURT ORDER.”

According to NDC National Secretary “the party had met every requirement for registration long before the Umar Ardo’s ADA did so ( if it did so), and only went to court when it was excluded from the shortlist of 14 political associations being considered for registration, on the strength of the questionable rejection of the NDC logo – a logo which INEC said bore a close semblance of the APC logo. NDC disagreed with that position, and the court concurred.

“INEC soon announced NDC as a political party, based on that court order, and proceeded to issue NDC a certificate of registration as a political party.

“The NDC has since started its activities as a political party. And only two weeks ago, it held its first NEC meeting, after serving INEC the mandatory 21-day notice, and INEC attended event and fully monitored the processes.

“The party has also given INEC the mandatory notices for its congresses and convention scheduled to hold soon.”

Enekweizu, who noted that since its registration and public presentation, said that the NDC’s officers and leaders have been working round the clock to introduce the party to Nigerians in all states of the Federation and Abuja, adding that they have also been aggressively promoting the party.

He said, “We thank Nigerians both within and in the Diaspora for the huge outpouring of love and enthusiasm in the way they have accepted the party and are massively registering as members of the NDC.

“This is largely due to the person of the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson whom millions of Nigerians have come to accept as authentic and a politician of conviction, not convenience.

“They have come to accept our party as a credible alternative to the decadence foisted on the country by the incumbent APC government. They have come to believe in us as the key bastion against the impending descent into a one-party state, which the APC is pursuing, against our avowed preference for a multi-party democracy.

“Of course, we in the NDC are not so naive as not to know that the forces of darkness are uneasy with the light and breath of fresh air that the NDC has come to represent, especially with widespread defections into the new party from both the ruling APC and other political parties from across the country. So we cannot say we were not expecting the shenanigans of Dr. Ardo and his ilk.

“We know those who have been funding Dr. Ardo to demarket NDC. We know Dr. Ardo to be an agent of the APC, working to destabilise and demarket the opposition and help push the one-party state agenda of the APC. Many of the Umar Ardo campaign are APC governors and chieftains who are well known to us, and who have suddenly become very jittery with the rising profile of the NDC, a party which they had initially given no chance.

“Rather than make demarketing NDC his project, Umar Ardo would do well to tell Nigerians the truth as to what happened to his ADA.

“We have it on good authority that ADA was denied registration for no other reason than Umar Ardo’s treachery and selfishness.

“ADA, which was the initial preferred platform of the opposition coalition, failed to be registered when Umar Ardo went behind the leaders of the coalition to substitute the names of protem officers nominated by coalition leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi and others with his own name as Secretary and Uche Secondus as Chairman”.

The NDC scribe revealed that Umar Ardo, who is close to the National Leader of the NDC, had initially sought the advice of Dickson on how to proceed when it was becoming clear that ADA registration might hit a brick wall.

According to him, Dickson had advised ADA to do the same thing NDC was doing by taking INEC to court, explaining that INEC has no power not to register the party if it meets the minimal requirements demanded by the commission.

“Unfortunately for ADA, Umar Ardo was seeking to sideline the leaders of the opposition and register the party for himself. So, when he filed his suit on behalf of the ADA, other coalition elements were taken aback when the reality of what Umar Ardo filed became public. Other leaders of the coalition promptly filed a countersuit challenging Ardo.

“That disagreement within the ADA, more than anything else, is responsible for why INEC refused to register ADA, but instead of telling the public this truth, Ardo is busy doing his paymasters’ bidding of trying to rubbish NDC.”
Curiously, Ardo has remained ominously silent on the NDP, another association which equally toed the path of NDC, by going to court, and which also won in court and has now been registered by INEC as a political party. That registration came after NDC’s. But Umar Ardo won’t say anything about the NDP because he feels the NDP might not yet possess the strength and wide acceptance that NDC has garnered in less than one month of receiving its certificate of registration.

“We would ordinarily have accepted to have Umar Ardo join us in the NDC to build the kind of credible opposition we envisage, that can challenge and defeat APC at the polls, but his track record of betrayal, selfishness and total lack loyalty and integrity have knocked him out of reckoning, as the NDC has no place for such characters as Umar Ardo, who is clearly working for the APC while pretending to hobnob with the coalition of opposition parties.

“Having destroyed the League of Northern Democrats (LND) of which he is the Convener, and also compromised the registration of ADA, Umar Ardo is now seeking to pull down the NDC. He is clearly on a mission, a mission to help APC destroy every possible opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections, and impose a one-party state against the wishes of Nigerians and all true democrats.”

Inter Lagos have secured promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The club confirmed their place in the top flight after playing out a 1-1 draw against Smart City on Monday, a result that proved sufficient to seal their elevation.

Inter Lagos currently sit at the top of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Conference A standings, having amassed 29 points from 15 matches.

They become the second team to gain promotion to the NPFL this season, following Doma United’s earlier qualification.

The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one suspect and the death of three persons following a pre-dawn attack on Pwomol Village in Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on Monday at about 4:30 a.m when gunmen invaded the community, shooting sporadically and prompting a distress call to security agencies.

A statement signed by SP Alfred Alabo, the spokesman of the Police command in the state, made available to newsmen, reads that in a swift response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah, mobilised a joint team of operatives, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Barkin Ladi, military personnel and other security agencies.

The team engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to flee into the surrounding mountainous forests.

Police said three persons were killed in the attack while one other sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

During a follow-up clearance operation, security operatives arrested one suspect identified simply as Suleiman (male) around the Redemption Camp area.

He was apprehended with visible blood stains on his body and is currently in custody.

CP Bassey Ewah later visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.

He condoled with the families of the deceased and assured them that a thorough, professional and transparent investigation would be conducted to bring the fleeing suspects to justice.

The police boss urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to report any suspicious movements to the nearest security agency.

To strengthen security in the area, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has ordered additional deployment of personnel, intensified patrols and enhanced synergy among security agencies.

The Plateau State Police Command also announced full enforcement of the curfew in the affected area and warned residents to comply strictly to avoid sanctions.

Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have neutralised five suspected terrorists and arrested a suspected kidnapper while dismantling several criminal hideouts in Plateau State.

The operations, conducted in partnership with local vigilantes, targeted insurgent corridors in Wase, Qua’an Pan and Shendam Local Government Areas.

According to a statement signed by Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, troops carried out intensive clearance operations on Saturday in Babangida, Adua, and Bokayi villages within the Dutsen Zaki forest.

“While patrolling the Babangida-Adua road, the joint team engaged armed terrorists in a fierce gun battle.”

The troops’ superior firepower led to the immediate neutralisation of two suspects, while others fled into the forest with gunshot wounds.

A search of the area recovered one locally fabricated firearm, a belt containing 105 rounds of 7.62mm PKT ammunition, 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and a cutlass.

In a separate operation on Sunday, troops acting on credible intelligence intercepted four suspected terrorists in the Namu District of Qua’an Pan Local Government Area around 7:45am.

The suspects were found in possession of 100 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

The statement also reads that “While attempting to dismantle the suspects’ hideout, troops came under heavy fire from the terrorists’ associates.

“In the ensuing exchange, three of the four arrested suspects were killed by their colleagues’ gunfire as they tried to escape.

“Later that morning at about 9:35am, troops, in collaboration with local residents, arrested a suspected kidnapper at Gidan Mangoro village in Shendam Local Government Area.

“The suspect is linked to a kidnapping incident that occurred in the area on April 3, 2026.”

“He is currently in custody for further investigation.”

The military authorities said the operations underscore the commitment of the Nigerian Army and its local partners to restoring peace and security in Plateau State.

Operation Enduring Peace urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest security agencies as clearance operations continue across the state.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu over renewed attacks in parts of the country, urging him to fulfill his earlier promise that such incidents would not recur.

Atiku’s reaction followed recent violent attacks reported in Benue, Nasarawa, and Kaduna states, days after Tinubu assured victims of the Jos killings that “this experience will not repeat itself.”

In a statement posted on X on Monday, Atiku said the president’s earlier assurance now appears unfulfilled amid continued violence.

“I wish to remind President Bola Tinubu to keep to his words that ‘this (Angwan Rukuba attack) will not repeat itself,’” he said.

He added, “It does appear that those words are hollow because barely 72 hours later, another attack in Benue State claimed over a dozen lives.”

The former vice-president called on the president to rise to the demands of leadership, stressing the urgency of addressing insecurity across the country.

“The Commander-in-Chief should brace up to the challenges of governance,” Atiku stated.

He also expressed concern over reports of insecurity in other parts of the country, including Nasarawa and Kaduna states.

“I am also concerned… about what is going on in a Nasarawa community where families had fled on foot amid threats of attack. And… there was a fresh attack in Kaduna State at the weekend,” he said.

Atiku emphasised that the protection of citizens remains the primary responsibility of government, urging the administration to move beyond rhetoric.

“The primary responsibility of government is the protection of lives and property… Enough of this hollow rhetoric, Mr. President. It is time to fold your sleeves and get to work,” he added.

He extended his condolences to the victims of the attacks, saying, “My thoughts and prayers are with the families who may have lost a dear one in these attacks.”

President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States attempted to arm Iranian protesters but the weapons were diverted and never passed to the right people.

Trump said the armaments were meant to help anti-government protesters fight back against the authorities.

“We sent guns, a lot of guns, they were supposed to go to the people so they could fight back against these thugs,” Trump told reporters while at a White House Easter event.

“You know what happened? The people that they sent them to kept them,” Trump went on, adding: “So I’m very upset with a certain group of people, and they’re going to pay a big price for that.”

Trump did not give details about who he was accusing of taking the US weapons.

However, on Sunday, Trump was quoted as saying by a Fox News reporter that he blamed Kurdish intermediaries for having taken weapons destined for Iranian dissidents.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the 16 countries that will compete at the 2026 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with Nigeria notably missing from the tournament for the second consecutive edition.

Nigeria’s absence follows their elimination in the WAFU Zone B qualifiers, where the Golden Eaglets suffered a 2-0 semi-final defeat to Ghana in September 2025, ending their hopes of reaching the continental stage.

The competition is scheduled to take place in Morocco from April 25 to May 15, 2026, and will also serve as Africa’s qualification route for the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. With the global tournament expanding to 48 teams, the top 10 finishers at the AFCON finals will secure qualification.

Algeria clinched the final spot after defeating Egypt 1-0 at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium, completing the list of qualified teams.

The 16 teams set to feature at the tournament are :
Algeria
Angola
Cameroon
Côte d’Ivoire
DR Congo
Egypt
Ethiopia
Ghana
Guinea-Bissau
Mali
Morocco (hosts)
Mozambique
Senegal
South Africa
Tanzania, and Uganda.

CAF’s qualification process is organised across six regional zones—UNAF, WAFU A, WAFU B, UNIFFAC, CECAFA, and COSAFA—with each region hosting its own tournament to determine representatives for the AFCON finals.

In 2026, smartphones have evolved into powerful video tools, with some devices capable of producing footage that rivals professional cameras.

While Apple still leads in consistency and workflow, several competitors are now matching—or even surpassing: it in specific areas like resolution, manual control, and cinematic flexibility.

Here are five of the best phones for high-quality video recording, each excelling in its own way.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max

The iPhone 17 Pro Max remains the gold standard for video recording. Its biggest strength is reliability—whether you’re shooting in daylight, low light, or switching between lenses, the results stay consistent. It supports advanced formats like ProRes Log and 4K at high frame rates, giving creators more flexibility in editing and color grading. This seamless, professional workflow is why it’s still widely considered the best overall video phone.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra stands out for those who want power and versatility. It offers up to 8K recording and a multi-lens system that enables dramatic zoom shots while filming. Combined with strong stabilization and detail from its high-resolution sensor, it’s a great choice for creators who want cinematic range and flexibility in their footage.

Sony Xperia 1 VII

Designed with filmmakers in mind, the Sony Xperia 1 VII delivers one of the most “professional” video experiences on a smartphone. It supports 4K recording at 120fps across all lenses and includes dedicated cinema-style apps that mimic real camera controls. This makes it ideal for users who prefer manual shooting and precise creative control over their videos.

Oppo Find X8 Ultra

The Oppo Find X8 Ultra has emerged as a surprising leader in video quality. With its large 1-inch sensor and advanced color calibration system, it produces highly detailed and accurate footage. Reviews note that it can even outperform some rivals in pure video clarity, especially in 4K, making it a strong alternative to more mainstream options.

Google Pixel 10 Pro

The Google Pixel 10 Pro focuses on smart video rather than raw specs. Its AI-powered features—like enhanced HDR and audio cleanup—help improve footage automatically, even in challenging environments. While it may not match Apple in consistency or Sony in manual control, it’s one of the easiest phones to use for clean, polished video straight out of the camera.

In the ever-evolving smartphone market, camera performance has become one of the biggest battlegrounds between flagship devices.

While Apple’s iPhone 17 series continues to deliver excellent image quality, especially in video recording, several Android manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of mobile photography with larger sensors, improved zoom capabilities, and advanced AI processing.

Here’s a closer look at five smartphones that stand out for offering camera systems that, in many areas, surpass what the iPhone 17 delivers.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra remains one of the most versatile camera phones available. Equipped with a massive 200MP main sensor and powerful periscope zoom, it excels in capturing distant subjects without sacrificing clarity. Its multi-lens setup allows users to switch seamlessly between ultra-wide, standard, and extreme zoom shots, making it ideal for users who want flexibility in every scenario.

Google Pixel 10 Pro XL

The Google Pixel 10 Pro XL continues Google’s tradition of delivering outstanding computational photography. Rather than relying solely on hardware, it uses advanced AI to produce sharp, well-balanced images, particularly in low-light conditions. Portrait photography also stands out, with more natural skin tones and depth effects that often feel closer to professional results.

Vivo X300 Ultra

With the Vivo X300 Ultra, mobile photography moves even closer to DSLR territory. The device features a large sensor and enhanced optics developed in partnership with Zeiss, allowing for exceptional detail and depth. Its standout feature is its powerful telephoto system, which offers impressive long-range zoom capabilities, making it a strong choice for photography enthusiasts.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra brings a photography-first approach with its large 1-inch sensor and Leica-tuned imaging system. This combination results in richer colors, better dynamic range, and superior performance in low-light environments. The phone also offers advanced manual controls, appealing to users who prefer a more hands-on, professional shooting experience.

Oppo Find X9 Pro

The Oppo Find X9 Pro delivers a well-rounded camera system that performs consistently across all lenses. Its periscope zoom and HDR processing ensure detailed images in both bright and challenging lighting conditions. Unlike some competitors that excel in specific areas, this device offers balanced performance, making it reliable for everyday photography.

The Federal Government College Kano Old Students Association (FGCKOSA) has issued an urgent appeal to President Bola Tinubu to immediately halt the concession of approximately 30 hectares of land within Federal Government College Kano under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

FGCKOSA described the initiative as a grave threat to a long-standing national educational legacy.

Unity Schools were established as pillars of excellence, national integration, and nation-building.
The association warned that converting educational land for commercial purposes undermines these foundational ideals and reflects a troubling shift from long-term educational priorities to short-term economic interests.

The association noted that alumni have consistently demonstrated commitment to the college’s growth, collectively investing billions of naira in infrastructure and academic development without seeking ownership or control of school property.

Building on this legacy, FGCKOSA has established a foundation aimed at sustaining the institution, with plans to raise ₦5 billion at its official launch in June 2026—providing a credible, education-focused alternative to the proposed concession.

FGCKOSA outlined several key concerns, including the misuse of federally designated educational land for private real estate development, potential threats to student safety arising from a mixed-use environment, and the irreversible loss of critical space needed for future expansion and recreational use. The association further questioned the necessity of siting such a project within a school environment, particularly in a state with abundant land for development.

The association asserted that the arrangement offers no tangible benefit to the college and raises concerns about the prioritisation of private interests over public good.

FGCKOSA therefore called on President Tinubu to immediately cancel the concession, protect the integrity of Unity Schools nationwide, and reaffirm the government’s commitment to strengthening educational institutions.

The association also cautioned the public against investing in any property linked to the disputed scheme, noting that the matter remains under serious contention and may be overturned.

FGCKOSA reiterated its resolve to pursue all lawful means to safeguard the college and preserve its legacy for future generations.

By Ike Uchechukwu, CALABAR

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has commissioned the Southern District office of the Homeland Safety and Security Agency in Calabar as part of a statewide drive to strengthen community-based security architecture.

The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Chief Emmanuel Ironbar, said the initiative underscores his administration’s resolve to build on existing security gains amid rising insecurity across Nigeria where banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related violence continue to threaten lives and property, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

“Before now, many could not sleep with their eyes closed due to insecurity, but today, the story has changed.

“This initiative will further eliminate criminal activities and enhance community safety,” he said.

Ironbar commended Nsan and the volunteers for their commitment, stressing that recruitment would be thorough and community-driven to ensure credibility.

He urged personnel to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious activities.

The commissioning, which took place simultaneously across the three senatorial districts — Calabar for the South, Ikom for the Central and Ogoja for the North — aims to position the Homeland Security outfit as the first line of intelligence gathering and rapid response at the grassroots.

Director (South) of the agency, Chief Michael Nsan, disclosed that over 1,300 volunteers are already supporting operations in the Southern District in collaboration with conventional security agencies.

Their efforts, he noted, helped reduce crime significantly during the last festive season.

Nsan added that the agency has set up strategic intelligence teams, while volunteers are undergoing training and screening for formal recruitment. To improve mobility, the state government provided 14 motorcycles for patrol in difficult terrains.

According to him ,security forces are often overstretched by nationwide threats of banditry and kidnapping, the Homeland Safety and Security Agency offers a vital complementary structure.

He added that It promotes community intelligence, quicker local response, and partnership with traditional institutions, thereby enhancing overall safety, restoring public confidence and supporting socio-economic activities.
