By Adeola Badru

Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has warned individuals involved in land grabbing, particularly those who employ violence, threats, or coercion to extort fees from legitimate property owners, urging them to desist or face severe consequences.

The monarch’s warning followed a wave of violent attacks reportedly carried out by land grabbers against residents of 12 villages in the Oyo West Local Government Area.

The affected communities include Itosi Yaya, Tella Omooba, Jowe, Idi-Iyalode, Bada, Ladindin, Janna, Ojutaye, Iporin Kajola, Ajibade, Laagbe, and Ariwinyo.

The disputed land spans a wide area stretching from Odo-Itosi to Odo-Ogun.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the paramount ruler noted that the Oyo metropolis is endowed with an extensive landmass, emphasising that land remains a critical, if not the most critical, factor for economic growth.

He lamented that, over time, land speculators and lawless individuals seeking unearned gains have resorted to various unlawful tactics to dispossess rightful owners of their properties.

Oba Owoade reminded perpetrators that the Real Properties Protection Law 2016 has been enacted by the Oyo State Government and is currently being enforced through a dedicated Task Force Unit.

He stated: “Under the Law, land grabbers can now be jailed for up to 15 years while those who aid and abet them will also not go scot-free.”

The statement further highlighted that land, being fundamental to shelter, commerce, and investment, has increasingly become one of the most contested assets within the Oyo metropolis.

“Rising demand has, however, fuelled a troubling surge in land grabbing, illegal transactions, and violent encroachments,” the statement said.

“For years, these activities have not only deprived individuals of their rightful properties but have also eroded investor confidence and threatened peace across communities.

“In response to the escalating crisis, the Alaafin, upon ascending the throne, declared that “enough is enough” and established a Land Committee tasked with restoring order and legality to land administration in the kingdom.

“The Committee, comprising seasoned professionals and respected elders, was inaugurated to tackle a long-standing issue that has persisted for decades.

“Its creation was prompted by widespread complaints from residents who have endured intimidation, unlawful land acquisitions, and exploitation by unscrupulous speculators.

“The Committee’s mandate is to ensure that land ownership and transactions within the metropolis are governed strictly by law rather than force.

“Its responsibilities include investigating cases of land fraud, encroachment, and unauthorised sales,“ the statement said.

Reiterating his administration’s commitment, the royal father stressed that peace, order and the protection of lives and property remain top priorities, affirming that no effort would be spared in safeguarding security across the kingdom.

The monarch also advised members of the public to disregard any individual, group, or organisation falsely claiming ownership of land in the affected communities.

Still a solid path to grow wealth, real estate demands picking the right move. By 2026, sharper choices come from clear data – tools like Propstream Review help spot gains while lowering danger. Yet a key doubt lingers: Does flipping offer faster wins, or does holding deliver deeper rewards over time?

One way isn’t better than the other – pros use them both, yet they bring different benefits. What fits you comes down to goals, cash on hand, skill, plus how much free hours you’ve got. Here’s a clear look at each method, written straight, so picking one for 2026 feels less like guessing.

Fix And Flip Meaning?

A house is bought at a lower price when it needs repairs. Because it sits in bad shape, someone sees a chance. After fixes update the inside and outside, the place changes fast. Once done, selling comes next – this time for more.Profit comes from the difference between the purchase price and the resale price.

A fresh coat of paint, new flooring, or an updated kitchen might be enough to lift the price fast. Flipping homes works best when changes are smart, not massive. Most see returns in under half a year if timing lines up right. Speed matters just as much as the upgrade itself.

Folks looking for quicker profits often lean toward this approach – especially when they do not mind handling overhaul work themselves. Renovation tasks? They tend to attract those who see value in hands-on control.

Fix And Flip Advantages

Fast Profit Potential

Faster returns show up here instead of waiting years like other property plays. Quick cash moves happen when deals close fast.

Growing Demand for Updated Homes

Ready-to-move-in houses often top buyer wishlists. Renovated properties catch more eyes than outdated ones. Modern finishes make a difference for most shoppers looking now.

Chance to Put Money Back Into Investments

Funds from a completed sale might go toward buying another house. Profit moves into new purchases when deals close.

Flexible Investment Approach

Should the market shift, renting out the property becomes an option rather than selling it.

Control Over Property Value

Renovations allow investors to directly increase property value.

Risks of Fix and Flip

A flip might turn a profit, yet getting there means thinking ahead. Without preparation, surprises pile up fast. Each step needs attention before moving on. Mistakes cost more than time. Planning helps avoid those hits. Success hides in the details sorted early

Budgets occasionally fall short when renovation expenses climb higher than planned

Unexpected repairs may reduce profit margins

Market changes can affect selling price

Projects require time and active involvement

Reliable contractors are necessary

Finding clear numbers matters most when planning each step ahead. A solid plan grows from watching every cost closely instead of guessing. Success shows up where details get checked without rushing.

Buy And Hold Explained?

A steady approach to real estate means holding onto homes after buying them. One way it works: collect payments each month from people who live there. Over years, the home typically becomes worth more. Income comes regularly. Value builds slowly. This method skips quick profits. Patience shapes results here.

Starting slow, some people pick Buy & Hold since it brings steady payouts while growing value over time. A quiet method, yet it sticks around through ups and downs simply by staying put. Instead of rushing trades, they wait – wealth piles up piece by piece without drama.

This approach usually feels calmer compared to flipping, since getting a fast sale isn’t the main goal.

Buy And Hold Advantages

Consistent Monthly Income

Rental properties generate regular cash flow.

Property Value Appreciation

Few things grow like property does, given enough time.

Tax Advantages

A single dollar saved on upkeep can mean more in an investor’s pocket later down the line. Wear and tear isn’t just tracked – it chips away at value while opening doors to write-offs.

Lower Selling Pressure

Profit does not demand an instant sale by investors. A wait can still bring gain without rushing to exit.

Long-Term Wealth Building

Over time, holding investments builds steady financial ground. Stability grows when assets stay put through market shifts. Patience shapes outcomes more than timing ever does. Long-term holding allows wealth to grow steadily over time.

Risks of Buy and Hold Investing

Buy & Hold also includes some responsibilities:

Property maintenance costs

Possible vacancy periods

Tenant management challenges

Financing costs affecting cash flow

Folks who invest often hand off tasks to property managers – keeps things moving without extra hassle.

Real Estate Trends 2026

Finding patterns in how markets move gives clues for smarter choices. A clear view of shifts guides where money might go next.

How Interest Rates Shape Where People Invest

Fewer expenses mean more returns when borrowing funds – this holds true whether short-term or long-term plans are in play. Profits shift based on how much interest piles up over time.

More people looking for rental homes

Renting grabs favor when house costs climb too steep. Home tags shock buyers into stepping back.

Technology changes how people make choices

Online tools help investors analyze deals more accurately.

Suburbs Keep Expanding

Far from downtown, jobs done at home push the need elsewhere.

Stable Construction Costs

Fresh patterns now show up in what things cost. A steady rhythm replaces wild swings. Prices settle into a routine people can count on.

With these shifts, Fix & Flip ventures find openings just as Buy & Hold strategies uncover new ground. A changing landscape often brings room to move – one path thrives on speed, another on patience. Where one investor sees a quick turnaround, another spots long-term gain. Each approach adapts differently when market currents shift. Moments like these tend to reward those who adjust their timing.

Fix And Flip Versus Buy And Hold Compared

Feature

Fix and Flip

Buy and Hold

Investment Type

Short Term

Long Term

Income

One Time Profit

Monthly Rental Income

Risk Level

Medium to High

Moderate

Effort Required

High

Medium

Profit Speed

Fast

Gradual

Market Sensitivity

Higher

Lower

Cash Flow

After Selling Property

Regular Monthly Income

Success comes easily if either approach gets applied the right way.

Strategy Comparison 2026?

Depending on where you stand in life shapes what move makes sense next. Money aims to shift how choices add up over time.

Fix & Flip may be better if you:

Want faster profits

Have renovation knowledge

Can manage projects

Understand property pricing

Prefer short-term investments

Buy & Hold may be better if you:

Want stable monthly income

Prefer long-term financial growth

Want less frequent buying and selling

Prefer passive income

Want more predictable returns

One path works well in 2026, provided it’s built on solid study and clear thinking. The other gains strength the same year, if matched with careful preparation.

Combining Both Strategies

Focusing on both short-term profits and long-term gains drives certain investors. One path flips properties quickly while another builds wealth slowly. Mixing tactics lets them adapt when markets shift. Fast sales fund future rentals instead of sitting idle. Each strategy feeds the other in a continuous cycle.

A single investor might sell homes quickly to earn money, after which they funnel those earnings into buildings meant for renting. Profit from quick sales sometimes leads people toward long-term rental investments instead of another fast deal. Some choose to move cash earned from flips straight into units that bring monthly income later on.

This balanced approach can:

Create both short-term and long-term income

Reduce investment risk

Increase financial stability

Build multiple income streams

When markets shift, having two approaches helps adjust more easily.

Conclusion

One way to invest in property is fixing homes to sell quickly. Yet another path means buying rentals for long term income. Depending on what you want financially shapes which route fits better. Some people handle stress differently when money is at stake. How much time someone spends managing deals also changes the outcome.

A quicker return might come from Fix & Flip, yet it demands hands-on oversight along with tight cost control. Still, jumping in without planning often leads to overspending when surprises pop up mid-project.

Steady pay comes from holding investments a long time instead of rushing to sell. Wealth builds slowly when you stay put through market swings. Patience replaces panic as prices move up and down over years.

Most people who win at investing spend time digging into data, thinking ahead carefully – then pick a path matching what they truly want. A few skip the prep work, but it rarely ends well when luck becomes the plan instead of logic.

A single smart move might be enough – Fix & Flip plus Buy & Hold could shape strong property gains by 2026. Success often follows when strategy leads. Each path brings value, depending on timing, market shifts, even luck. One focuses on speed, the other on patience. Results show both stand firm over years. Long-term wins aren’t guaranteed – but preparation helps. Real estate keeps evolving; so should methods. Past trends hint at future patterns, though nothing repeats exactly. Smart choices today plant seeds for later growth. Markets shift quietly, then suddenly demand new thinking.

By Emmanuel Okogba

A significant injury setback has cast doubt over Mohammed Kudus’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 25‑year‑old Ghanaian forward, who joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2025 on a high‑profile deal, has reportedly suffered a relapse of a quad and hamstring injury that has sidelined him since January.

Recent reports indicate that the issue may require surgery, potentially ruling him out for the remainder of the season and jeopardizing his chances of representing Ghana at the World Cup.

Kudus had established himself as a crucial figure for both club and country, playing a key role in Tottenham’s attack and contributing significantly to Ghana’s qualification campaign.

His latest setback has raised concerns within the Black Stars camp, with medical assessments suggesting he could be sidelined for up to three months if surgery is necessary. This timeline overlaps with Ghana’s tournament preparations, leaving the team uncertain about his availability.

Tottenham confirmed the setback in statement on Thursday on X: W”e can confirm that Mohammed Kudus has suffered a setback in his return from injury. The Ghana international forward suffered a significant quad injury during our Premier League fixture against Sunderland in January.

“He had returned to team training during the past week, however will now require further specialist review and, potentially, surgery. We will provide any relevant further updates in due course. We’re all with you, Mo”, it read.

For Ghana, the possible absence of one of their most influential attacking players would be a major blow as they prepare for a challenging group‑stage campaign. While no official decision has been made regarding his World Cup status, the recurring nature of his injuries and uncertainty surrounding his recovery have fueled anxiety among fans and officials alike.

Ghana is drawn in Group L, along with England, Croatia and Panama. They will open their campaign against Panama on June 18.

Barcelona’s main goal this season is to win the Champions League but coach Hansi Flick on Friday told his players to focus on this weekend’s La Liga derby against Espanyol.

Atletico Madrid beat Barca 2-0 at Camp Nou in the quarter-final first leg in midweek, leaving the Catalans with an uphill struggle next Tuesday in the Spanish capital.

League leaders Barca host local rivals Espanyol on Saturday with a seven-point gap to Real Madrid in second.

“The dream for every player, the club, the fans, the coaches is to win the Champions League,” Flick told reporters.

“In every (European) game you see the team is five percent more motivated (above) 100 percent. This is the competition, this is why we are here.

“We have to make our daily job, this is La Liga, but in the end the most important thing is to win the Champions League. This is the goal from my side, the players and the club.”

Five-time Champions League winners Barca last won the trophy in 2015.

The reigning Spanish champions beat Espanyol in January and since then Manolo Gonzalez’s side have failed to win a single match and have fallen to 10th after a strong first half of the season.

“We have a lot of players from La Masia (the club’s youth academy), they know exactly what it means to play against Espanyol,” said Flick.

“It’s a derby, we are playing at home and I want to win it.”

The coach indicated that he would “manage minutes” by rotating some players between the two Atletico clashes, but said that “whoever is starting tomorrow will be a fantastic team”.

Flick said that his players will not be distracted by the visit to the Metropolitano stadium next week.

“This is their job, what they have to do. They are very focused and ready for tomorrow,” added the German coach.

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a ceasefire over Orthodox Easter — a temporary truce that the Kremlin says will begin on Saturday afternoon and end on Sunday night.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the ceasefire late Thursday, more than a week after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky first called for a truce over Easter.

The announcement comes amid a lull in US-led diplomatic efforts to end the four-year war.

Here’s what we know about the proposal, and the current state of peace talks:

– What’s been agreed? –

The Kremlin said the ceasefire would be in effect from 4:00 pm (1300 GMT) on Saturday until the end of the day on Sunday, a 32-hour period.

Russia’s Defence Minister Andrei Belousov and army chief Valery Gerasimov have been instructed to “cease hostilities in all directions during this period,” the Kremlin said.

“We assume that the Ukrainian side will follow the Russian Federation’s example,” the Kremlin added, calling it a “humanitarian” pause.

Zelensky said shortly after that Ukraine had “repeatedly stated” it was ready for a ceasefire over Easter, and was willing to reciprocate.

“We proposed a ceasefire for the Easter holidays this year and will act accordingly,” he said.

The Kremlin’s spokesman denied Russia had discussed the ceasefire with Ukraine or the United States in advance.

– Previous truces –

Russia announced a similar, 30-hour truce with Ukraine over Orthodox Easter last year.

Both sides accused each other of violating it hundreds of times, although the Ukrainian air force reported a lull in Russian air raids during the truce.

Several days later Putin declared another truce, this time over Russia’s May 9 holiday, when he was due to host world leaders including China’s Xi Jinping for a grand military parade on Red Square.

Zelensky described the proposal as “cynicism of the highest order”, saying Ukraine had no intention of creating a “pleasant atmosphere” for the occasion.

Previous proposals for truces failed to materialise.

Russia has repeatedly rejected Ukraine’s calls for a long-term, unconditional ceasefire, saying it is instead pushing for a final peace settlement.

Ukraine says Moscow is not genuinely interested in peace and wants Kyiv to capitulate.

– Battlefield situation –

After making its largest gains last year since 2022, the Russian army’s advances have slowed in recent months.

The Russian military recorded almost no territorial gains in Ukraine last month for the first time in two and a half years, according to an AFP analysis of data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Across the entire front line, the Russian army seized only 23 square kilometres (8.9 square miles) in March, losing territory in some areas, according to the analysis.

Moscow currently occupies just over 19 percent of Ukraine, the majority of which it seized during the first weeks of its invasion in 2022.

Approximately seven percent, including Crimea and areas in the Donbas region, were already under Russian or pro-Russian separatist control before the invasion.

– Where do peace talks stand? –

US President Donald Trump’s administration has been pushing for an end to the fighting, brokering multiple rounds of negotiation between the two sides in Abu Dhabi and Geneva.

The three countries last met in Geneva in late February, days before the United States launched its war with Iran.

Trilateral talks have been effectively frozen since then, although both Moscow and Kyiv have signalled they are ready to resume them.

Progress towards a peace deal has been slow, due to differences over the issue of territory.

Ukraine has proposed freezing the conflict along the current front lines.

But Russia has rejected this, saying it wants Ukraine to give up all the territory in the Donetsk region that it currently controls — a demand Kyiv says is unacceptable.

The two sides have also failed to reach an understanding on the issue of control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, seized by Russia at the start of the war.

– ‘Right strategy’ –

Ukraine has indicated it will abide by the truce, despite scepticism among Ukrainians about whether it will work.

“We believe that a ceasefire is the right strategy to advance diplomatic efforts,” said Ukraine’s foreign minister Andriy Sybiga.

Moscow has rejected calls for a longer-term ceasefire.

“Regarding the willingness to compromise, Russia doesn’t seem ready to lower its demands yet,” Russian analyst Konstantin Kalachev told AFP.

Pro-Kremlin military blogger Rybar said the truce could be used to “evacuate the bodies of the dead or even the wounded, which has become virtually impossible due to drones.”

By Esther Onyegbula

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled an alleged attempt to secretly bury a murder victim and arrested three suspects linked to the crime in Akute area of the state.

The suspects, Maureen Okirie, 35; Salia Karikari, 15; and Jubril Karikari, 12, were apprehended by detectives attached to Ajuwon Division following a tip-off on suspicious activities within the community.

Police said the arrest was made at about 11:15 a.m. on Thursday when officers stormed the scene and caught one of the suspects attempting to inter a blood-soaked corpse in a shallow grave, in what authorities described as a cover-up effort.

The victim, identified as 38-year-old Stanley Okirie, was found with severe head injuries. Preliminary investigation revealed that he was allegedly attacked with a wooden pestle, while other suspects, said to be relatives of the deceased, conspired in both the killing and the attempted concealment.

The suspected murder weapon has been recovered, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited at Life Channel Mortuary in Olambe for autopsy.

Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, condemned the act, describing it as “cruel, inhumane, and deeply disturbing,” particularly as it involved close family members.

He warned that acts of violence and attempts to conceal crimes would not be tolerated, assuring that the Command would ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.

Ojajuni added that the suspects would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and prosecution.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, assuring that the police remain committed to safeguarding lives and property.

Members of the public were encouraged to make use of the command’s emergency lines to aid timely response to criminal activities.

The Nigerian Bar Association has warned that it will take disciplinary action against lawyers who institute court cases aimed at drawing the judiciary into internal disputes within political parties.

In a statement released amid ongoing factional and leadership crisis in the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), the association expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of legal practitioners and courts becoming entangled in intra-party matters, despite clear provisions of the law.

“The Nigerian Bar Association has closely monitored recent political and legal developments as the nation gradually approaches the 2027 General Elections,” the statement read.

“These developments, particularly those arising from the interpretation and potential application of provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, raise serious constitutional, democratic, and rule-of-law concerns that require immediate intervention.”

The NBA stressed that the law explicitly bars courts from entertaining cases relating to the internal affairs of political parties. Quoting Section 83 of the Electoral Act 2026, it said, “No court in Nigeria shall entertain jurisdiction over any suit or matter pertaining to the internal affairs of a political party.”

It further explained that courts are also restricted from issuing interim or interlocutory orders in such matters. “Not only are courts denied jurisdiction to entertain any matter pertaining to the internal affairs of a political party, but they are also precluded from granting any interim or interlocutory injunction even where any action has been brought in violation of the Act,” the statement said.

The association criticised what it described as ongoing violations of these provisions. “What we now see are situations where actions are not only instituted in Courts by lawyers in clear violation of the Act, but Courts purportedly grant interim and/or interlocutory injunctions in clear contempt of statutory provisions of the law. This does not augur well for our democracy.”

The NBA warned that such practices could undermine democratic processes.

“This emerging trend of subverting the clear letters of the Electoral Act and dragging courts into the internal affairs of political parties through disingenuous litigation, forum shopping, and malafide applications designed to secure undemocratic political advantage, bodes no good for our democracy,” it stated.

Reiterating its position, the association reminded lawyers of their professional obligations. “Members of the Bar are reminded that they are Ministers in the Temple of Justice and not political agents seeking judicial endorsement of partisan objectives,” it said.

The NBA vowed to take decisive action against erring practitioners. “The filing of actions intended to draw courts into internal political party disputes, particularly where jurisdiction is expressly excluded, constitutes an abuse of court process and a violation of professional responsibility,” it said.

“The NBA will take firm steps to deter such conduct. Lawyers who deliberately file actions aimed at procuring judicial interference in intra-party affairs… risk facing disciplinary proceedings. We will not hesitate to present petitions before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) against any Legal Practitioner found to be engaging in such conduct.”

It added that the move is necessary “to serve as a deterrent and to preserve the sanctity of the judicial process,” urging courts to resist being drawn into what it termed political manoeuvring.

“The Nigerian judiciary must stay vigilant and resist being drawn into political theatrics,” the statement concluded.

Everyday Iranians are awaiting planned negotiations between Washington and Tehran with a mixture of scepticism and outright fear, caught between a government they say doesn’t understand peace and an American president who has threatened to destroy “a whole civilisation”.

Talks between the United States and Iran and hosted by Pakistan were hanging in the balance on Friday, but if they go ahead they could transform a temporary ceasefire in the US-Israeli campaign against the Islamic Republic into a lasting peace.

Residents of Tehran contacted by AFP from Paris — who asked not to be identified out of concern for their safety — have mixed views on that prospect and are far from optimistic, with feelings ranging from anger, to anxiety, to deep disillusionment.

– The negotiations –

Amir, a 40-year-old artist, said he didn’t “think this temporary agreement and negotiation will last even a week”.

Iran’s repressive apparatus — including its Revolutionary Guards, the ideological arm of its military — are seen as having been strengthened by the war that broke out on February 28, making a deal all the more unlikely, according to Amir.

“The propaganda machine has delivered them such lies that they really believe they have won the war,” he said. “They cannot last in peace because they don’t understand peace.”

For Sheida, 38, the uncertainty around the talks has generated a sense of anxiety.

“We’ve got so much hardship dumped on us that we don’t even know what to worry about first,” she said. “Now that the ceasefire has started, everyone’s scrambling to settle debts and sort out financial stuff.”

– War or the status quo? –

A choice between the return of terrifying US-Israeli airstrikes and the preservation of the Islamic republic’s long-standing system is no choice at all, according to Sheida.

“I am scared of the war starting again, and at the same time I’m scared of the regime staying,” she said, adding that “the people in power have become even more aggressive”.

Amir said he would “prefer for the war to continue, to result in the downfall of the regime”.

“If this doesn’t happen, oppression will intensify further,” he said.

If the talks do result in an agreement, he continued, it would likely do little to serve the Iranian people.

He pointed to anti-government protests just before the war that were met with a deadly crackdown, saying he and other likeminded Iranians would keep up their opposition, adding: “We will not forgive our murderers.”

“It is not possible to continue living with the Islamic republic,” he said.

– Trump’s shifting goals –

One Tehran resident, aged 30, said it was difficult to determine what US President Donald Trump hoped to accomplish in the talks.

“I guess you shouldn’t take Trump so serious,” they said. “He wants to erase a civilisation and he makes a ceasefire built on nothing 12 hours later.”

“Most of what he says is just pure noise.”

Homemaker Shahrzad, 39, said she had been both terrified and disillusioned by Trump’s apocalyptic threat — issued before the ceasefire — that “a whole civilisation will die” if Iran did not reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

“Threatening more than 90 million people with destruction of a civilisation is itself a crime,” she said, describing days filled with fear as families “prepared to die” in the wake of the president’s ultimatum.

“I had hoped for the fall of the Islamic regime and accepted the hardships of war, but now I realise this man is playing the whole world and has no sense of humanity.”

Sheida, meanwhile, questioned Trump’s sense of strategy, saying he must be “either crazy or inexperienced”.

“Did the US president really not realise they could get stuck if the Strait of Hormuz was closed?”

– The future of the Islamic republic –

At the outset of the war, both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had suggested their goals included toppling the Islamic republic, though they soon shifted to other aims.

Sara, a 44-year-old graphic designer, said Iran’s “government is an ideological one, and it’s not going to collapse easily”.

“Its mindset exists all the way down to the lowest levels, so it’s really not simple to change,” she added.

Amir said he believed the country’s remaining leaders would continue fighting.

“They are prepared to destroy everything just to prevail,” he added. “The only solution is for the people to rise again or for the regime to be destroyed through war.”

“Imagine what would happen if they survive war with the US and Israel… they would fear nothing anymore,” Amir continued, predicting such an outcome would increase the chances of Iran seeking an atomic weapon — an ambition Tehran has long denied.

But the 30-year-old Tehrani expressed scepticism at the chances of any popular uprising. “Don’t protest if you wanna live,” they warned.

By Innocent Anaba

The Supreme Court on Friday restored Wole Olanipekun, SAN and Dr. Muiz Banire, SAN, as counsel for Neconde Energy Limited and Nestoil Limited in the ongoing $2 billion debt dispute, setting aside the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal which disqualified them.

In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Idris, the apex court affirmed the right of the companies to retain legal practitioners of their choice, particularly in proceedings challenging the validity of a receivership imposed on them.

The court held that where the legality of a receiver’s appointment is being contested, such a receiver lacks the authority to appoint counsel to represent the company in the same matter.

The ruling effectively reinstates Olanipekun’s appearance for Neconde Energy Limited and Banire’s representation of Nestoil Limited in the high-stakes dispute involving a consortium of lenders led by FBNQuest Merchant Bank Limited and FBN Trustees Limited.

At the centre of the dispute is whether a receiver appointed by lenders can exclusively determine the legal representation of a company, even when the validity of that appointment is under judicial challenge.

The Supreme Court answered in the negative.

Justice Idris noted that the issues submitted before the trial court sought interpretation on whether the lenders were entitled to enforce security, appoint a receiver, and whether such a receiver could lawfully exercise powers under the appointment.

According to the court, these issues strike at the “very foundation” of the receivership, rather than constituting routine administrative matters.

“It would occasion a conflict of interest,” the court held, “for a receiver appointed by parties whose rights are being challenged to also determine the legal representation of the company in the same proceedings.”

The apex court stressed that the receiver’s powers are derived from the very transaction being disputed, making it improper for such a receiver to control the company’s legal defence.

It further held that proceedings questioning the validity and scope of a receivership do not fall within the general powers granted to a receiver under Section 556(3) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) and its Eleventh Schedule.

In such circumstances, the court said that a company retains residual powers to defend itself through its board of directors and counsel of its choosing.

“The defence of the action through its directors and the counsel retained by them cannot be said to be incompetent merely because a receiver has been appointed,” Justice Idris declared.

The Supreme Court faulted the January 13, 2026, decision of the Court of Appeal, which had disqualified Olanipekun, Banire, and their legal teams, while recognising the receiver as the sole authority to appoint counsel.

Describing the decision as erroneous, the apex court held that the lower court failed to appreciate the inherent conflict in allowing a receiver—whose appointment is under scrutiny—to control the company’s legal representation.

The case, marked SC/CV/48/2026, stems from an alleged $2 billion indebtedness owed by Nestoil Limited and Neconde Energy Limited to a consortium of lenders.

Following the alleged default, the lenders appointed a Receiver/Manager to take over the companies’ assets and operations.

The judgment is expected to have far-reaching implications for corporate governance and creditor enforcement, particularly in insolvency and receivership proceedings, as it reinforces the rights of companies to independent legal representation when challenging the validity of such appointments.

The Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has inaugurated a Technical Committee to evaluate and fast-track the proposed Integrated Gas, Power and High-Speed Rail Project.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, performed the inauguration Thursday at his office in Abuja.

The project, promoted by De-Sadel Nigeria Limited combines gas monetisation, power generation, high-speed rail, digital infrastructure and real estate development under a 40-year renewable concession framework.

Regarded as one of the boldest private-sector-driven infrastructure initiatives in West Africa, the SGG envisioned it as catalyst for industrial growth, job creation, and energy security worth supporting by government.

Akume noted, “This project aligns with our national priorities of economic growth, energy sufficiency and modern transport infrastructure. The committee has been carefully constituted to ensure comprehensive and objective evaluation.”

“You are expected to submit your findings and recommendations within six weeks, in line with the FG commitment to timely and efficient decision-making”, he charged committee members.

Outlining the financing model and projected impact, Samuel Uko, President/Chief Executive Officer, De-Sadel Nigeria Limited, stressed that the initiative would stimulate huge employment, enhance infrastructure connectivity, and accelerate industrialisation.

The integrated nature of the project, Uko explained, could significantly reduce logistics costs, improve power supply to industrial clusters and open up new corridors for trade and investment, strengthening Nigeria’s as a regional economic hub.

The Technical Committee, chaired by a Director in the Office of the Permanent Secretary (Political and Economic Affairs), comprises representatives from key Ministries, Departments and Agencies, including the Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited Federal Ministry of Transport.

Also represented are the Infrastructure and Concession Regulatory Commission, Debt Management Office, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and Nigerian Communications Commission, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources ( Oil and Gas) among others.

Others are the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit and Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation, alongside nominees of the project promoters.

A presidential aide, Daniel Bwala, has criticised leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid the party’s ongoing leadership crisis, saying its structure and internal dynamics make it incapable of surviving political challenges.

Bwala made the remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, following the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw recognition of the faction led by former Senate President, David Mark.

In the post, Bwala said he had earlier predicted turmoil within the party, arguing that recent developments have validated his position.

“I said this six months ago and if you want to know why ADC is more confused than the mad man that used to advise Gregory, here are the facts,” he wrote.

He went on to criticise what he described as excessive ambition among party members, stating, “A party where everybody wants to be president (selfish) cannot build a virile opposition.”

The presidential aide also faulted the manner in which the party’s leadership structure emerged, saying, “A party built on hostile take-over cannot survive the storm.”

Bwala further accused the party of lacking consistency and ideological direction, adding, “A party where the members have double standards that they apply to people cannot see road” and “A party where the presidential aspirants have changed political parties like chameleon cannot have ideology.”

He also questioned the intentions of the party’s leadership, stating, “A party where their leaders see Nigerians as a means to an end cannot coordinate,” and warned that desperation among its leaders could undermine governance.

“A party where their leaders’s desperation is a do or die affair cannot govern Nigerians,” he added.

Bwala concluded by asserting that the party’s current challenges reflect deeper structural weaknesses.

“Finally, have you not noticed that they are more confused now than they were when their journey started? I said it before, ‘give them six months and they would come crashing’; it is evident before our very eyes. Say no to association of desperate congregation (ADC),” he said.

The ADC has been embroiled in a leadership tussle in recent weeks, with multiple factions laying claim to control of the party following INEC’s stance and ongoing legal disputes.

Natural gas remains one of the world’s most important energy sources, powering industries, generating electricity, and heating homes across continents.

Despite its widespread use, the bulk of this resource is concentrated in a handful of countries.

A recent analysis, drawing on data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the Oil & Gas Journal and compiled by Petroleumpriceng, ranks the top 10 countries with the largest proven natural gas reserves—defined as gas that can be extracted economically under current market conditions.

Together, these countries account for about 83% of global reserves, highlighting how geographically concentrated the resource is.

Top 10 countries by natural gas reserves (with notes)

1. Russia – 1,688 tcf
Russia remains the global leader, holding the largest reserves by a wide margin. Its vast gas fields across Siberia make it a dominant exporter, especially to Europe and Asia.

2. Iran – 1,200 tcf
Iran ranks second, with massive reserves largely concentrated in the South Pars field. Despite sanctions, gas plays a crucial role in its domestic energy supply.

3. Qatar – 843 tcf
Qatar is a global powerhouse in liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. It shares the world’s largest gas field with Iran and has built a strong export-driven economy around gas.

Trade experts and thought leaders from across the African continent have said Africa has a role in shaping the World Trade Organisation, WTO, reform, noting that the world is at a critical juncture for the multilateral trading system.

They said this while launching the Africa Trade Policy Working Group, ATP Working Group, a new effort to strengthen African voice and influence in global trade governance, with Dr Ese Owie appointed as Convenor.

The ATP Working Group, launched on the sidelines of World Trade Organization’s 14th Ministerial Conference, MC14, in Yaoundé, Cameroon, aims to position Africa as a strategic actor in the evolving global trade order by amplifying and connecting leading thinkers from across the continent and the African diaspora, while bridging policy, academia, and practice.

The ATP Working Group emerged from a high-level workshop co-organised by the Remaking Trade for a Sustainable Future Project, RTP, ODI Global, Trade Negotiations and Investment Forum, TNIF, International Relations Institute of Cameroon, IRIC, Forum on Trade, Environment & the SDGs, TESS, and South African Institute of International Affairs, SAIIA.

Those featured include WTO Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; WTO Deputy Director-General, His Excellency Xiangchen Zhang; and Professor Dan Esty of Yale University and a co-founder of the Remaking Trade Project, and other leading policymakers, negotiators, and scholars.

The statement, which revealed the group, said: “Key areas of focus will include development-oriented reform, climate-trade linkages, supply chain resilience, digital trade, and institutional renewal, thereby advancing a more coherent, coordinated, and forward-looking African contribution to global trade debates.

“Discussions at MC14 and associated convenings underscore both the urgency of WTO reform and the growing recognition that Africa must step forward to proactively shape the future of global trade governance.

“The multilateral trading system is undergoing structural transformation, driven by geopolitical realignment, climate change, supply chain restructuring, and digitalization. The establishment of the ATP Working Group reflects a strategic shift in Africa’s engagement with global trade governance—from fragmented participation to coordinated influence.

“The ATPWG, convened by the Remaking Trade for a Sustainable Future Project’s Senior Advisor Dr Ese Owie, is anchored by a coalition of leading African and globally recognized institutions, reflecting both regional depth and international reach. Founding partners include: African Future Policies Hub; Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa, London School of Economics; International Relations Institute of Cameroon, IRIC, Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University; Onsi Sawiris School of Business, American University in Cairo; Trade Negotiations and Investment Forum, TNIF; South African Institute of International Affairs, SAIIA; Strathmore Law School, SLS. In addition to its institutional partners, the ATPWG is supported by a network of leading African trade experts, several of whom attended the launch in Yaoundé, underscoring the depth of expertise and commitment behind the initiative.”

Android 17, the next major upgrade to Android operating system, is expected to roll out in June 2026, bringing a range of new features and improvements for users.

But the big question remains: will your phone get it?

Since 2025, smartphone manufacturers have been required to support devices with updates for at least five years. As a result, much of the Android 17 eligibility list overlaps with Android 16. Still, some older models are set to lose support this year.

Below is a manufacturer-by-manufacturer breakdown of devices expected to receive the update. However, timelines may vary, as not all brands strictly follow official update commitments.

Google Pixel leads the rollout

As usual, Google will be first to release Android 17, thanks to its control over both hardware and software.

With its extended update policy, all Pixel devices that received Android 16 are expected to get Android 17. These include:

Pixel 10a, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL

Pixel 9 series (including Pro and Fold variants)

Pixel 8 series

Pixel 7 series

Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a

Samsung expands long-term support

Samsung continues to lead on long-term Android support, offering up to seven generations of updates on flagship models.

Devices expected to receive Android 17 include:

Galaxy S26, S25, S24, and S23 series

Galaxy Z Fold and Flip (5 through 7)

Galaxy A-series (A16 through A56 range)

Galaxy M-series models like M35 and M54

However, older models such as the Galaxy S22 series and Z Fold/Flip 4 are not expected to receive further updates.

Xiaomi, Honor, and others join in

Xiaomi is expected to update a wide range of devices, including its flagship numbered series, Redmi Note lineup, and Poco phones—though its update policy remains less transparent.

Honor is offering up to seven years of updates on select flagship models, with devices like the Magic 6, Magic 7, and Magic V series likely to receive Android 17.

OnePlus, Oppo, and Motorola updates

OnePlus has clearly outlined its update roadmap, with newer devices such as the OnePlus 11, 12, and 13 series in line for Android 17.

Oppo is also expected to roll out the update to its latest Find and Reno series devices, though older models are nearing the end of support.

Meanwhile, Motorola has drawn attention for offering fewer Android updates on some devices, despite regulatory expectations. Still, newer Edge, Razr, and Moto G models are likely to be included.

Smaller brands and niche players

Brands like Nothing and its sub-brand CMF promise at least three major Android updates, making newer models eligible.

Sony remains one of the most transparent manufacturers, with select Xperia models confirmed for Android 17.

Realme and Asus are also expected to push updates to their latest devices, although details remain limited.

The cross-border onion trade between Nigeria and Ghana has resumed following the suspension of a five-day strike by Nigerian exporters, signaling a return to normalcy after a brief but tense disruption in regional commerce.

President of the National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN), Aliyu Maitasamu Isah, confirmed in an interview with Vanguard that transactions have fully restarted.

“We have resumed transactions. The strike has been suspended, so we are back to normal operations,” he said.

According to him, the impasse was resolved “the yesterday,” allowing traders to immediately return to business activities across the Ghana corridor and other export routes.

According Maitasamu who is also President, Regional Observatory body of Onion in West and Central Africa (ORO/AOC) attributed the resolution to the intervention of top officials from both countries, including Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana and Ghana’s Minister of Trade.

“They met and were able to resolve the issue to some extent. However, discussions are still ongoing, as we remain at the negotiation table to finalize everything,” he explained.

According to him the breakthrough led to the release of previously detained trucks and the restoration of the status quo in trading operations.

“They released our trucks, and we have resumed normal operations. We were asked to maintain the status quo, essentially to continue operating as we did before the crisis,” he added.

Recall that the suspension of onion exports earlier in the week followed escalating tensions between Nigerian traders and local groups in Ghana, particularly at the Kotoku Market in Accra.

Information made available indicated that Nigerian traders faced harassment, intimidation, and the seizure of trucks loaded with onions, prompting NOPPMAN to halt exports to protect its members from losses and insecurity.

The dispute disrupted a major agricultural trade route within the ECOWAS region and raised concerns about supply shortages and price instability in Ghana.

Addressing concerns about violence during the crisis, Maitasamu disclosed that Ghanaian authorities took decisive action against those responsible for the unrest.

“The government took the necessary steps and even arrested those involved in the shooting at the market. The mastermind behind the incident was apprehended by the Ghanaian government,” he said. He clarified that beyond the confiscation of goods, no widespread fracas was recorded.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has passed a resounding vote of confidence on Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, citing what it described as deliberate and impactful governance.

This is as it issued a stern warning to opposition figures in the state against inflammatory rhetoric and misinformation, cautioning that such conduct could trigger political instability.

Addressing a press conference in Umuahia on Thursday, the Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Abia State chapter, Godwin Adindu, stressed that while opposition remains vital in a democracy, it must be constructive and solution-driven.

“Democracy thrives on alternative voices that provide direction and hold those in power accountable. But resorting to mudslinging and misinformation is dangerous radicalism that must be discouraged,” Adindu said.

Flanked by the Assistant Publicity Secretary, Chief Obinna Ibe, Adindu said Ohanaeze could not remain silent on issues affecting Ndigbo, including governance and leadership.

He noted that the organisation’s vote of confidence in Gov. Otti followed a critical assessment of developments in Abia over the past three years.

According to him, the state has recorded “tremendous transformation” across key sectors, including healthcare, education, infrastructure, and the civil service.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo is today passing a vote of commendation and confidence on Governor Alex Otti for being deliberate and intentional in improving the standard of living of Abia residents,” he declared.

The group particularly highlighted “the ongoing transformation of Aba,” describing the commercial hub as central to Igbo economic life.

“Aba remains a cardinal city for Ndigbo. The governor’s massive infrastructural renewal of the city has earned widespread admiration. Today, Otti represents the Igbo spirit of innovation, resilience and enterprise,” Adindu said.

Ohanaeze also commended the administration’s reforms in the civil service, noting the regular payment of salaries and pensions, which it said had restored confidence among workers.

It further praised Otti’s efforts to improve the business climate, making Abia more attractive for trade and investment.

On cultural revival, the group lauded the establishment of the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, as well as policies promoting Igbo identity, including compulsory teaching of the Igbo language in schools and the adoption of native attire by government officials on designated days.

“These initiatives are critical to preserving our heritage and promoting the Igbo identity,” the group noted.

Ohanaeze said its commendation should serve as encouragement for the governor to sustain people-oriented policies, reaffirming its commitment to supporting leaders who advance the collective interest of Ndigbo.

UMUAHIA – The Abia State caucus of the African Democratic Congress,ADC, has distanced the party from the actions of Mr. Don Norman Obinna, stressing that he lacks the authority to act or speak as the party chairman in the state.

Making the declaration after a meeting at the ADC State Secretariat in Umuahia, party leaders including Senator Austin Akobundu; Hon. Uko Nkole; Hon. Okey Igwe, amongst others;,said they have reviewed the leadership situation and stated their commitment to due process, internal discipline, and the rule of law.

Nkole, who read the statement on behalf of the Abia ADC caucus, drew attention to a subsisting order of the Abia State High Court which, through an interim injunction dated December 3, 2025, restrains Obinna from parading himself or acting in any capacity as chairman of the party in the state, pending the determination of the case.

However,Don Norman Obinna said the alleged court order restraining him as state chairman, has been vacated. He explained that he’s still the state chairman of the ADC in the state.

The party leaders said; “We align with the findings of the ADC South-East Zonal Disciplinary Committee report of September 25, 2025, which clarified the party’s stance on his conduct and status.

”Consequently, Obinna’s actions is unlawful and misleading, stressing that his continued claim to leadership amounts to a violation of party discipline and contempt of a valid court order. Meeting, directives, or public engagements conducted by him in the name of the party are null and void.”

The ADC also leaders affirmed Mazi Kanu O. Kanu as the Acting State Chairman of the party in the State, pending the conduct of the party’s state congresses and urged the public, security agencies, and stakeholders to disregard any statements or actions attributed to Obinna in the capacity of ADC chairman in the state.

The caucus also passed a vote of confidence on the party’s national leadership under Senator David Mark and reiterated their commitment to unity, discipline, and adherence to constituted authority across all levels of the party.

By Kingsley Omonobi

The Nigerian Navy said on Friday that in furtherance of operations against oil theft, its personnel of Operation Delta Sentinel, in the first quarter of 2026, conducted over 183 successful operations across key operational areas, resulting in the recovery of 531,500 litres of illegally refined petroleum products and the arrest of 18 suspects linked to crude oil theft and related maritime crimes.

The Navy also destroyed 12 illegal refinery sites, 4 storage facilities, 3 vessels/boats, and 2 wellhead or pipeline connections.

Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said, “The operation which replaced Operation Delta Sanity II, incorporates enhanced surveillance, improved intelligence coordination, and a structured quarterly review mechanism, with an initial duration of one year.”

Giving details, he said, “In the First Quarter of 2026 (January – March 2026), Monthly operational data shows that February recorded the highest recovery volume with 360,700 litres, followed by 118,800 litres in January and 52,000 litres in March, indicating ongoing pressure on illicit oil activities.

“During this period, several major operational milestones were achieved.

“These include the seizure of 45,000 litres of stolen products in Rivers State between 20 and 23 January 2026, the interception of an 18-tonne barge on 13 February 2026, the discovery of a 96,000-litre illegal wellhead in Bayelsa State on 23 February 2026, and the recovery of 34,000 litres of various petroleum products on 5 March 2026.

“These successes demonstrate the Nigerian Navy’s sustained operational reach and effectiveness across the maritime domain.

“Operations in March further demonstrated intensified efforts across multiple theatres, particularly in Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa States.

“Targeted operations around Warri South-West, Oteghele Creek, Ogbe-Ijoh, Alakiri River, and the Ogbia/Egbema/Ndoni axis resulted in the recovery of substantial quantities of crude oil and illegally refined products.

“Notably, approximately 45,000 litres of crude oil were recovered at Alakiri River on 14 March 2026, while 44,000 litres of AGO were intercepted at Ogbologo on 21 March 2026, along with the arrest of 8 suspects.

“Additional operations recovered quantities ranging from 4,000 litres to over 21,000 litres per location, and discovered and dismantled illegal wellheads, reservoirs, and pipeline connections used for siphoning crude oil.

“Throughout the quarter, the Nigerian Navy systematically targeted and dismantled illegal oil infrastructure, including illegal refinery sites, storage facilities, vessels, and pipeline connections.

“In total, at least 12 illegal refinery sites, 4 storage facilities, 3 vessels/boats, and 2 wellhead or pipeline connections were destroyed.

“There was also a gradual decline in the estimated market value of recovered products, indicating that sustained naval operations are progressively disrupting the economic viability of these illegal activities.

“The Service remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain, protecting vital national assets, and increasing oil production to support of national economic goals, in line with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.

“The Nigerian Navy will continue to conduct intelligence-led operations and strengthen inter-agency cooperation to further degrade oil theft networks within the Nigerian Maritime Environment.”

Recall that the Nigerian Navy’s Operation Delta Sanity, a maritime security operation, was launched on 13 January 2026 to strengthen the protection of Nigeria’s maritime environment and combat crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.

…Police Rescue Two, Man Arrested for Alleged Matricide

By Dayo Johnson, Akure

Akure — Tragedy struck Ondo State following separate violent incidents that claimed multiple lives, including a mother and her daughter in an attack by suspected kidnappers.

In the first incident, gunmen attacked a poultry farm at Igushin via Ala in Akure, where they killed a woman and her daughter.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants, reportedly numbering about five, gained access to the premises by scaling the fence while the poultry owner was at work alongside her daughter, sister, and other staff.

During the attack, three persons were abducted, creating panic within the community. The bodies of the poultry owner and her daughter were later discovered within the compound.

“The attackers came through the fence. They were about five and took three people away. Later, we found the woman and her daughter dead,” an eyewitness said.

Security operatives were subsequently alerted, prompting the deployment of police detectives to the area.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that two of the abducted victims were rescued during a coordinated operation.

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, condemned the incident, describing it as a violent attack that led to the loss of lives.

“While two victims were successfully rescued through a swift operation, the Command expresses deep sorrow over the deaths recorded,” he said.

He added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible and assured residents that measures had been put in place to enhance security.

Jimoh also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide useful information to security agencies.

In a separate incident, a man identified as Ife was arrested for allegedly killing his mother in Supare-Akoko, in Akoko South-West Local Government Area of the state.

The deceased, said to be a health worker, was reportedly attacked at her residence.

Sources in the community alleged that the suspect had earlier been seen carrying a stick and, when questioned, said he intended to use it for cooking.

According to a source, the victim had returned home briefly when the incident occurred, adding that there had been previous concerns about the suspect’s behaviour.

Operatives of the state security outfit, codenamed Amotekun, were said to have arrested the suspect and evacuated the body of the deceased.

Authorities have not released further details as investigations continue into both incidents.
