Two suspects arrested in connection with the killing of a 300-level Biochemistry student of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, have been handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

‎The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, disclosed this Friday during a condolence visit by the university management to the family of the deceased student, Mr. David Ocholi Solomon, at their residence.

‎According to the Vice-Chancellor, the suspects were apprehended by the university’s internal security operatives within two hours of the incident before being transferred to relevant security agencies to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

‎Professor Usman assured the bereaved family that the university would closely monitor the case and collaborate with security agencies to ensure that everyone found culpable at the conclusion of investigations is brought to justice.

‎He described the killing as a tragic development that has thrown the university community into mourning, noting that the institution remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at uncovering the full details behind the incident.

‎The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the university’s zero-tolerance stance against cultism, violence and other criminal activities, stressing that management had strengthened security measures across the campus and surrounding communities to forestall future occurrences.

‎He said additional security reforms would be introduced in the coming days as part of efforts to improve safety for students, staff and visitors.

‎Professor Usman also appealed to members of the public and the deceased’s family to support ongoing investigations with any useful information that could assist security agencies in establishing the facts of the case.

‎He expressed confidence that due process would be followed in the investigation and prosecution of the suspects.

‎Responding on behalf of the family, the father of the deceased, Mr. Solomon Idachaba, commended the university for its swift response following the incident and expressed hope that justice would be served through the ongoing investigation.

Following the announcement of the former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar, in the den of bandits, the Defence Headquarters has issued a statement mourning the late senior officer and reaffirming its resolve to continue the fight to eradicate terrorism.

The statement signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, read, “The Defence Headquarters regrets to announce the passing of Major General Rabe Abubakar (Retired), who tragically lost his life in captivity following his abduction.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) convey its deepest sympathies to the Abubakar family, his colleagues and all Nigerians.

“Maj Gen Abubakar served the nation with distinction and held many appointments including spokesperson of various military formations as well as spokesman for the AFN as Director Defence Information.

“He made immense contributions to counter-insurgency operations, professional development of the AFN and numerous other commendable and outstanding impacts.

“His commitment to duty and to the unity of Nigeria remains a shining example for all personnel of the AFN.

“The Defence Headquarters withheld public comment on his abduction in deference to ongoing rescue efforts by the AFN and sister security agencies. Every operational resource was deployed in the hope of securing his safe return.

“This sad loss further strengthens the resolve of the AFN. We will remain resolute in the discharge of our constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and to protect all citizens.

“In response to series of unfortunate abductions across Nigeria including that of Maj Gen Abubakar, ongoing operations have since been further intensified to bring perpetrators to justice and to dismantle all terrorist networks threatening our nation.

“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorists activities across the nation are held to account.”

Ghana said Saturday it has formally lodged a protest over Canada’s refusal to issue a visa for the World Cup to player Thomas Partey, who is facing trial in Britain on rape charges.

Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a statement, said Ghana had problems with “the highanded and extremely unfair decision” to reject a visa application by Partey, “a key member of Ghana’s senior national team”.

“Ghana has dispatched an official note of protest” to Canada, said, the statement adding that the “note also requested that Canada reviews its unfortunate decision”.

The Villarreal midfielder, who previously played for Arsenal, has pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault relating to allegations by four different women between 2020 and 2022.

A trial has been set for next year, allowing the 32-year-old to represent Ghana at the World Cup, but he will not be involved in Wednesday’s match in Toronto.

“While respecting Canada’s sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws, Ghana considers that reliance on unproven charges in the absence of a judicial determination raises fundamental questions of fairness and proportionality,” said the statement

FIFA has confirmed that Partey would not be able to travel from Ghana’s team base camp in Boston, to Canada for their opening match against Panama on on June 17.

The 32-year-old will be eligible to play in Ghana’s subsequent Group L games against England and Croatia, both taking place in the United States.

LAGOS — An emerging business alliance between Lanre Okoya, son of billionaire industrialist and founder of the Eleganza Group, Aare Razaq Okoya, and Les Ojugbana, son of distinguished nobleman, accomplished businessman and founder of MADEC Associates Nigeria Limited, Chief F. E. Ojugbana, is attracting growing attention within Nigeria’s business and investment community.

Industry observers say the partnership is significant not only because of the family names involved, but also because both men have independently built successful entrepreneurial ventures and investments beyond their family legacies, with interests extending into international markets.

The alliance is generating interest for its potential to combine industrial expertise, agribusiness innovation, business development experience and strategic investment capabilities at a time when Nigeria intensifies efforts to strengthen agriculture, industrialisation, infrastructure development and economic diversification.

Building on Strong Legacies

Lanre Okoya represents a new generation of leadership within one of Nigeria’s most prominent business families. The Eleganza Group, founded by Aare Razaq Okoya, grew into one of Nigeria’s leading indigenous manufacturing conglomerates, with interests spanning household products, plastics, furniture, cosmetics and real estate.

Despite his family’s prominence, Lanre Okoya has maintained a relatively low public profile while developing extensive experience in manufacturing operations, food production, supply-chain management and industrial enterprise. Industry stakeholders describe him as a strategic businessman with a strong focus on operational efficiency, commercial execution and sustainable growth.

Similarly, Les Ojugbana builds upon the legacy of his father, Chief F. E. Ojugbana, whose contributions through MADEC Associates Nigeria Limited helped shape management development, enterprise support and strategic consultancy across Nigeria. Through decades of engagement with government institutions, multinational corporations and private-sector organisations, MADEC established a reputation as one of Nigeria’s respected business development and management consulting firms.

However, observers note that Les Ojugbana has successfully forged his own entrepreneurial path. A former professional champion combat athlete turned entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist, Ojugbana has built a diverse portfolio spanning agribusiness, agricultural investment, enterprise development and international real estate.

As Founder and Chairman of FarmAfrik, he has championed agricultural productivity, greenhouse farming, farmer empowerment and sustainable food systems while creating investment opportunities across the agricultural value chain. Through his ventures and partnerships, he has consistently advocated for greater private-sector participation in agriculture as a pathway to food security, job creation and economic growth.

Beyond business, Ojugbana is also the founder of the Les Ojugbana Foundation, which focuses on youth empowerment, education, entrepreneurship development and community support initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for underserved individuals and families.

His involvement in business, philanthropy and community development has earned him recognition as part of a new generation of African entrepreneurs committed to both commercial success and meaningful social impact.

Strategic Opportunities in Agriculture and Industrial Construction

The emerging alliance comes at a time when agriculture, agro-processing, food security and industrial development are increasingly viewed as critical pillars of Nigeria’s economic future.

Analysts believe the combination of Okoya’s industrial and manufacturing expertise with Ojugbana’s experience in agribusiness, investment development and enterprise growth presents significant opportunities across agriculture, industrial construction, agro-processing and related sectors.

A major component of the alliance’s long-term vision is the planned development of high-capacity fertilizer manufacturing facilities across Nigeria. Sources familiar with the partnership’s strategic direction indicate that both entrepreneurs are exploring opportunities to establish fertilizer production plants in key agricultural corridors nationwide.

The initiative is expected to support Nigeria’s agricultural transformation agenda by significantly reducing the country’s reliance on imported fertilizers while improving access to affordable, high-quality agricultural inputs for farmers across the nation.

Industry experts have long identified fertilizer availability and affordability as critical factors affecting agricultural productivity. By investing in large-scale domestic production capacity, the alliance aims to strengthen local supply chains, reduce foreign exchange pressures associated with imports, stabilize fertilizer availability and increase crop yields.

The proposed fertilizer manufacturing programme is expected to align with broader national objectives centred on food security, import substitution, industrialisation and economic diversification. Beyond supporting farmers, the facilities are projected to generate employment opportunities, stimulate industrial activity, encourage technology transfer and contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s manufacturing sector.

National Fertilizer and Food Security Initiative

Perhaps the most ambitious aspect of the partnership is its vision to establish a nationwide network of high-capacity fertilizer manufacturing plants capable of supporting Nigeria’s growing agricultural sector and strengthening long-term food security.

According to stakeholders close to the discussions, the alliance envisions developing strategically located production facilities that will serve major farming regions while creating an integrated industrial ecosystem comprising manufacturing, storage, logistics and distribution infrastructure.

The project is designed not only to increase fertilizer production but also to create a sustainable domestic supply chain capable of meeting rising national demand and reducing exposure to international supply disruptions.

Industry analysts note that Nigeria’s continued dependence on imported agricultural inputs has exposed farmers to foreign exchange volatility and supply shortages. A strong domestic fertilizer industry, they argue, would provide greater stability, improve affordability and support increased agricultural output.

The broader economic implications are also significant. Construction of the proposed facilities would support industrial expansion, create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and stimulate economic activity across multiple sectors.

Sources close to the alliance say the long-term objective extends beyond commercial returns.

“Our objective is not simply to participate in agriculture, but to help transform it. Through the development of world-class fertilizer manufacturing facilities and related industrial infrastructure, we aim to reduce import dependence, support Nigerian farmers, strengthen food security, create employment and contribute to the long-term prosperity of our nation,” representatives of the alliance stated.

Observers believe that by combining industrial expertise, agricultural innovation and strategic investment, the partnership could play a meaningful role in advancing Nigeria’s ambition to become a leading agricultural and agro-industrial hub in Africa.

A New Generation of Enterprise Leadership

Beyond its commercial prospects, many observers view the partnership as reflective of a broader shift taking place across Africa’s business landscape, where next-generation entrepreneurs are increasingly pursuing strategic collaborations to scale ventures, diversify investments and expand regional influence.

While both men are heirs to respected business legacies, industry stakeholders point out that their growing alliance is built on individual accomplishments and entrepreneurial success rather than family heritage alone. Both have established business interests and professional networks that extend beyond Nigeria, positioning them among a new generation of African entrepreneurs leveraging innovation, strategic partnerships and cross-border opportunities to drive growth.

The partnership is therefore being viewed as an example of how modern African business leaders are combining legacy, innovation and strategic collaboration to unlock new opportunities across key sectors of the economy.

One of Nigeria’s Most Watched Emerging Partnerships

Although details of future projects remain closely guarded, interest surrounding the alliance continues to grow within corporate, industrial and investment circles.

As Nigeria seeks innovative solutions to strengthen food security, expand industrial capacity, create jobs and attract investment, collaborations between experienced entrepreneurs are expected to become increasingly important.

For many observers, the coming together of Lanre Okoya and Les Ojugbana represents more than a business relationship. It reflects the convergence of industrial strength, entrepreneurial ambition and strategic vision at a time when Nigeria is positioning itself for a new phase of agricultural and industrial growth.

Should the alliance realise its anticipated potential, analysts believe it could emerge as one of the most influential private-sector partnerships in Nigeria’s agriculture, fertilizer manufacturing, industrial construction and broader economic development sectors, helping to shape a new chapter in indigenous enterprise, investment-led growth and sustainable development.

In an era where food security, industrial self-sufficiency and sustainable economic growth have become national priorities, the partnership is increasingly being viewed as a model for how visionary African entrepreneurs can leverage strategic collaboration to deliver transformational impact at scale.

Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, has died in captivity two weeks after he was abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State.

The Katsina State Government confirmed his death on Saturday, saying the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, described the incident as a tragic loss despite efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure the general’s freedom.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various Security Agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement read.

“The deceased Retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension.

“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country.

“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Katsina State Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, extends his deepest condolences to the family of the late General and the country at-large. The Governor has described this incident as a “dark moment” and a reminder of the urgent need for a collective and intensified front against the criminal elements threatening the peace of our communities.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time. May the soul of the departed Retired Major General Rabe Abdulakdir rest in eternal peace.”

Vanguard had reported that General Rabe and his wife were kidnapped around the Matazu area of Katsina State while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony.

Days after the abduction, the couple appeared in a video released by their captors, who demanded the release of three detained associates identified as Sani, Aminu and Nasiru, as well as the return of livestock allegedly seized from them.

In the video, Rabe’s wife appealed to the Katsina State Government and leaders of five local government areas to facilitate compliance with the demands in order to secure their release.

The retired general also spoke briefly in the footage, calling for peace and dialogue, while noting that the abductors had expressed interest in peaceful coexistence.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government has mediated between Iran and the United States to end their war, said on Saturday a peace deal would “likely” be finalised within 24 hours.

“We are closer to a peace deal than ever before. With finalisation likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week,” he said in a post on social media platform X.

After weeks of stalled negotiations on the terms for an initial memorandum of understanding, both Washington and Tehran have signalled in recent days they were nearing an agreement.

Tensions, however, persisted as the United States said it downed multiple Iranian drones targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz early Saturday.

Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB also quoted Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as saying that until a complete agreement was reached on all issues, “it cannot be said with certainty that an understanding has been achieved with the United States”.

Pakistan has been pushing both nations to come to an agreement after a fragile ceasefire was struck in April and Islamabad hosted talks between the warring sides which ended with no deal to resolve the conflict that erupted in late February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

Sharif said in his post on Saturday that he was “confident that this historic peace deal will form a strong foundation for lasting peace”, thanking both Washington and Tehran “for their ongoing commitment”.

Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who ruled the country for nearly 37 years before being killed by Israeli and US airstrikes on February 28, will be buried on July 9, state television reported Saturday.

The burial in his hometown, the northeastern holy city of Mashhad, initially scheduled for March but postponed due to the war, will follow three days of funeral ceremonies in capital Tehran beginning July 4 and another in the holy city of Qom on July 7, it said.

July 4, the start date of the national funeral, will coincide with the United States’ Independence Day, which this year celebrates its 250th anniversary.

Ali Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, succeeded him as supreme leader in early March, the third since the establishment of the Islamic republic in 1979.

Mojtaba Khamenei, wounded in the strikes that killed his father and numerous other officials, has not appeared in public since his appointment and communicates only through statements attributed to him.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a suspected arms courier in Kano State allegedly transporting weapons intended for delivery to a notorious bandit leader operating in Zamfara.

An operational report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday said the suspect was apprehended on Friday in Gezawa Local Government Area following actionable intelligence.

According to the report, the suspect was intercepted while moving a cache of arms and ammunition from Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa to Funtua in Katsina State for onward delivery to criminal elements.

“Items recovered from the suspect include three AK-47 rifles, four rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) tubes and warheads, as well as two empty magazines.”

The report said preliminary investigations linked the consignment to a suspected bandit kingpin believed to be operating in parts of Zamfara.

“The suspect confessed that he was contracted to transport the weapons from Maigatari to Funtua and was promised a payment of N450,000 upon successful delivery.

“Investigations are ongoing to unravel the network behind the arms movement and identify other collaborators involved in the operation,” the report said.

The report described the arrest as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to disrupt the supply of arms and ammunition to criminal groups responsible for violent attacks, kidnappings and other security threats in the North-West.

It added that the suspect was in DSS custody and would face further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.

According to the report, security agencies have continued to intensify intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling logistics networks that sustain banditry, terrorism and other forms of organised crime across the country.

The minister of defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, says true and lasting national security must be anchored on defeating ignorance, conquering hopelessness, and defending democratic values.

A statement on Saturday by his special adviser on media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, said the minister said this while speaking on Friday at the June 12 Special Edition of The Platform Nigeria held in Lagos.

Musa said that meaningful economic gains could only be sustained when security was guaranteed.

“When we speak of national defence, the instinct is to focus on boots on the ground, air power, or intelligence gathering.

“But true and lasting security is anchored on one critical element: the defeat of ignorance and the conquest of hopelessness.

“No democracy can flourish where fear dominates daily life,” he said.

Providing a balanced assessment of Nigeria’s security situation, the minister acknowledged milestones recorded by the Armed Forces, including the neutralisation of key terrorist leaders and the disruption of major criminal networks.

He noted, however, that modern threats such as banditry, kidnapping, cybercrime, and transnational violent extremism were highly adaptive and increasingly interconnected.

Musa also paid tribute to the sacrifices that birthed Nigeria’s democracy and warned that modern security threats required a rapid, technology-driven evolution in the nation’s defence strategy. (NAN)

A rotting body was found in the trunk of a car parked near the stadium where Iran’s World Cup football team is training in Mexico, AFP journalists at the scene reported Friday.

The gruesome discovery came with games underway in the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by Mexico, the US and Canada.

Reporters watched as police in Tijuana opened the trunk of the gray Toyota SUV, which had California plates, in the parking lot of a supermarket directly across from the Caliente Stadium, where Team Melli is training as it prepares for three games in the United States.

Specialists in white protective suits worked around the vehicle to examine the corpse before removing it.

The prosecutor’s office in Tijuana said the body had been discovered by a patrol unit.

“Upon inspecting the vehicle, they found a person wrapped in a black bag in the trunk, showing signs of violence,” a spokesman said, adding the car was believed to have been abandoned on Wednesday.

Temperatures in the city have reached up to 28 celsius (82 Fahrenheit) in recent days, with hot sunshine beating down for hours every day.

Mexico is plagued by powerful drug gangs and has one of the world’s highest murder rates.

Tijuana, which sits on the border with the United States, is notoriously dangerous, with more than 1,200 homicides recorded there in 2025, according to official statistics.

The Iranian national team, whose participation in FIFA’s football extravaganza had been clouded by war with the United States, had planned to have their training camp in Arizona, but moved to Mexico amid ongoing hostilities.

Since its arrival, the team has been under heavy security and is escorted between the hotel and the stadium by armed soldiers.

On Friday, the convoy left the stadium just minutes after the body had been removed.

There was no immediate response to AFP queries to the team over security arrangements.

While the Nigerian Safety Investigation Board, NSIB, is probing how a private aircraft with registration number N989BC landed on a road in the Ogwashi-Uku area of Delta State, the mystery landing is still drawing reactions.

Read Also: FG probes landing of aircraft on Delta road

Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, disclosed that the pilot who flew the private aircraft is an American-licensed pilot aged 75, while the co-pilot is 70.

Also, “This aeroplane had a flight plan filed from Lagos to Asaba. That was his destination. He did go to Asaba, made an approach in Asaba. He could not land. He did a go around.

“How he ended up landing on a strip or a road, a newly constructed road, only the pilot and his God could determine it.”

NCAA Director of Operations, Licensing and Training, Capt Don Spiff, said these on News Night, an Arise TV programme.

American licence

Spiff said both pilots held American licences and operated under United States aviation regulations. Also, neither of them was considered overaged under the applicable rules and the aircraft was American registered.

He faulted the pilot’s decision to take off from the road after the incident, saying the action was unauthorised.

He said: “Before I say anything, I must remind you that investigations have already started on this incident.

“So, I must not kind of preempt anything.

“However, I can tell you for sure that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Board, NSIB, that is mandated to carry out investigations on serious incidents and accidents is already on it.

“If they determine that it is not a serious incident, then they will hand it over to the NCAA.

Age limits

“The pilots that flew that aeroplane have American licences. The pilot is 75. The co-pilot is 70. The pilot is not overaged in America.

“The standards in Nigeria are slightly different from America. This aeroplane is an American registered aeroplane, November registration. The pilots that flew it hold American licences. They operate in America.

“They have different parts. They call them the condition of regulations. They are operating under what they call Section 14. And not only Section 14, this aircraft was operated under Section 14.”

On what the rule in Nigeria says, he said: “In Nigeria, it is 65. Once you are 65, you stop flying commercial. But we are also reviewing our regulations.

“Aviation is a very dynamic field, it is not static. It is not stationary. It is an improvement, a modification everyday. Nigeria itself is looking into it. It is in the Civil Aviation Act.

“It is yet to be implemented that after 65, a Nigerian pilot can actually fly private, not commercial, as long as he passes his first-class medical.

“But these guys are not flying with Nigerian licence.

Aircraft owner

“The owners of this aircraft will eventually be revealed when the investigation gets there. But the operator of this aircraft could be different from the owner.

“But the operator is VMO Aero. It is a Nigerian company, but this aircraft is American registered, and because it’s American registered, the pilots hold American FAA licences and operate under part 91 and part 135 of the regulations of the FAA.

“It is not a breach. During the investigation, it would come out if there was any ulterior motive to it.

“For him to have taken off, it was not allowed because he did not obtain any clearance for takeoff. He did a kamikaze (suicide mission) action. There will be penalties. So far, the NCAA has suspended their commercial certificate, which is called a PNCF.”

Asked about the safety of Nigerian airspace, he said: “I must say at this point that for one incident to have happened in so many months and so many years should not question the safety of Nigerian airspace.

“The Nigerian airspace is very safe. This was an isolated incident.”

The Nigerian Army says troops of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, have neutralised a terrorist, rescued three kidnapped victims, and destroyed a bandits’ camp during ongoing operations in Zamfara.

This is contained in an operational report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

The report said the operation was conducted on June 12 across communities in Zurmi and Shinkafi Local Government Areas as part of efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities.

According to the report, troops on a fighting patrol covering Birnin Saba, Yanbuki, and Sabon Garin Daudawa made contact with terrorists operating in Yanbuki District of Zurmi LGA.

It stated that troops engaged the terrorists in a firefight, neutralising one of them while others fled.

The report said troops recovered rifles, four magazines loaded with ammunition, two motorcycles, seven mobile phones, two MP3 players, woodland camouflage trousers, and an inner vest from the scene.

According to the report, the troops maintained pressure on the fleeing terrorists and advanced toward the Sabon Garin Daudawa community.

It added that the terrorists abandoned their camp and fled on sighting the advancing troops.

The report said troops subsequently cleared the area and destroyed the camp to deny the criminals a safe haven for future operations.

It further disclosed that troops rescued three kidnapped victims during clearance operations in the area and evacuated them to safety.

The military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations across Zamfara and the wider North-West until terrorist and bandit groups are dismantled and peace is restored to affected communities. (NAN)

United States striker Folarin Balogun stole the spotlight after scoring twice in his side’s 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday.

The Nigerian-born forward found the net in the 31st minute before adding a second just before half-time to help the co-hosts secure a comfortable win. After the match, Balogun described the performance as a dream come true.

“A real dream, you know? It’s a dream, it’s a dreamy night,” he told reporters after.

“I’ve not been able to take it all in afterwards… I’m sure when I get back to my hotel and I rest, I’m sure I’m going to really be able to be in the moment and experience how much of an amazing night this is.”

His first-half brace also saw him become the first American player in 96 years to score more than one goal in a single World Cup match. Here are five things to know about him:

1. Born to Nigerian parents

Balogun was born in Brooklyn, United States, to Nigerian parents. Although he was born in America, he spent only a short time there before moving to England with his family, making him eligible to represent the United States, England and Nigeria.

2. He grew up in London

Just weeks after his birth, Balogun relocated to London, where he spent most of his childhood and his upbringing in England helped shape his football development.

3. Arsenal discovered him at a young age

Balogun joined the youth academy of Arsenal F.C. at the age of eight. He progressed through the ranks and became one of the club’s most highly rated young forwards before breaking into senior football. In August 2023, he joined Monaco on a five-year contract.

4. His birth in America happened by chance

Balogun’s mother, Florence, was seven months pregnant when she travelled to New York in 2001. She had planned to return to London, but airline restrictions prevented her from flying due to the advanced stage of her pregnancy.

As a result, Balogun was born in Brooklyn and acquired American citizenship by birth.

5. He chose the United States over Nigeria and England

In May 2023, Balogun committed his international future to the United States, turning down opportunities to represent both Nigeria and England. Explaining his decision at the time, he said it came from his heart.

Five Indian Air Force personnel were killed when a military plane crashed while landing at a base in the country’s remote northeast on Saturday, the military said in a statement.

“The Indian Air Force deeply regrets the loss of five personnel in the An-32 accident at Jorhat”, a city in Assam state, the air force said in a statement.

It did not say how many people were on board at the time, or whether there were any survivors.

However, an air force official, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to brief the media, told AFP the co-pilot had survived.

News channel NDTV broadcast images of the crash site, showing a thick black plume of smoke and the aircraft apparently broken into pieces.

The air force said it “extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and stands firmly with them in this hour of grief”.

It said earlier that the Russian-made Antonov An-32 was on a “routine sortie” when it crashed as it came in to land.

“A court of inquiry is being constituted, to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the air force said.

The An-32, a twin-engine turboprop, is specially designed to perform well at high altitudes and in extreme climates.

The Indian air force operates about 100 of them for military supplies and civilian aid in the country’s remotest mountain areas.

The last major crash involving the plane occurred in 2019 in Arunachal Pradesh state, near the border with China, when 13 people were killed.

By Dickson Omobola

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has disclosed that the pilot who flew the private aircraft with registration number N989BC, which landed on a road in the Ogwashi-Uku area of Delta State, is 75 years old, while the co-pilot is 70.

Director of Operations, Licensing and Training, Capt. Don Spiff, said both pilots held American licences and operated under United States aviation regulations, adding that neither of them was considered overaged under the applicable rules and the aircraft was American-registered.

Speaking on News Night, an Arise TV programme, Spiff, however, said while the current age limit for commercial pilots in Nigeria was 65, the country’s regulations were under review.

He also faulted the pilot’s decision to take off from the road after the incident, saying the action was unauthorised.

He said, “Before I say anything, I must remind you that investigations have already started on this incident. So, I must not kind of preempt anything. However, I can tell you for sure that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Board, or NSIB, which is mandated to carry out investigations on serious incidents and accidents, is already on it.

“If they determine that it is not a serious incident, then they will hand it over to the NCAA. The pilots that flew that aeroplane have American licences. The pilot is 75. The co-pilot is 70. The pilot is not over-aged in America. The standards in Nigeria are slightly different from America. This aeroplane is an American-registered aeroplane with November registration. The pilots that flew it hold American licences. They operate in America. They have different parts. They call them the condition of regulations. They are operating under what they call Section 14. And not only was Section 14, but also this aircraft was operated under Section 14.

On what the rule in Nigeria says, he said, “In Nigeria, it is 65. Once you are 65, you stop flying commercial. But we are also reviewing our regulations. Aviation is a very dynamic field; it is not static. It is not stationary. It is an improvement, a modification every day. Nigeria itself is looking into it. It is in the Civil Aviation Act. It is yet to be implemented that after 65, a Nigerian pilot can actually fly privately, not commercially, as long as he passes his first-class medical check-up.

“But these guys are not flying with Nigerian licenses. The owners of this aircraft will eventually be revealed when the investigation gets there. But the operator of this aircraft could be different from the owner.

“But the operator is VMO Aero. It is a Nigerian company, but this aircraft is American-registered, and because it’s American-registered, the pilots hold American FAA licences and operate under part 91 and part 135 of the regulations of the FAA.

“It is not a breach. This aeroplane had a flight plan filed from Lagos to Asaba. That was his destination. He did go to Asaba and made an approach in Asaba. He could not land. He did a go-around. How he ended up landing on a strip or a road, a newly constructed road, only the pilot and his God could determine.

Asked about the safety of Nigerian airspace, he said, “I must say at this point that for one incident to have happened in so many months and years should not question the safety of Nigerian airspace.” The Nigerian airspace is very safe. This was an isolated incident.”

*We’re transforming thousands of youths, students, entrepreneurs, civil servants, corporate workers – MD

By Demola Akinyemi & Juliet Umeh

As youth unemployment continues to rise in Nigeria, the Ilorin Innovation Hub says it is equipping young people with digital skills that can earn them up to $2,000 monthly through technology and entrepreneurship.

Governor Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq

The hub, regarded as the largest innovation hub in West Africa, has launched a range of programmes aimed at equipping youths with globally relevant skills in Artificial Intelligence, AI, software development, digital innovation and entrepreneurship.

Speaking during a tour of the facility in Ilorin, Kwara State, the Managing Director of the hub, Mr. Temi Kolawole, said the initiative was created to bridge the gap between training and economic opportunities for young Nigerians. According to him, one of the hub’s flagship initiatives, Learn to Earn, was specifically designed to ensure participants move beyond skills acquisition to income generation.

“We have a programme called Learn to Earn that guarantees that once participants complete the intensive training programme, which lasts for over a year, they begin earning at least $2,000 monthly. The objective is not just to train people but to help them become economically productive,” he said.

Kolawole explained that the facility provides free access to training, co-working spaces, mentorship and business support, removing barriers that often prevent talented young Nigerians from participating in the digital economy.

“We do not charge users for our workspace. Everything is free. We want young people, regardless of their background, to have access to opportunities that can change their lives,” he stated. Beyond training, the hub also connects innovators with investors and development partners to help transform ideas into viable businesses.

Showing visitors around the facility’s pitch hall, Kolawole said many participants had already secured grants, funding and other forms of support after presenting their projects to potential investors.

“This is where people pitch their ideas. Investors have come here to see what innovators are building and many of our participants have secured grants, funding and support through our network,” he said.

He added that Artificial Intelligence has become a major focus of the hub’s activities because of its growing influence on the future of work. “The number one skill people can learn here today is AI. Whether it is prompt engineering, AI content creation or software engineering powered by AI tools, AI is shaping the future of work and that is where we are focusing our efforts,” he said.

In an interview with Saturday Vanguard, Mr Kolawole said, “Ilorin Innovation Hub is a Kwara State Government initiative, powered by IHS Towers, in partnership with Co-creation Hub (CcHub) and Future Africa and it’s one of West Africa’s largest innovation spaces, covering over 13,000 square meters and built for more than 1,000 users.

“The hub was established following a Memorandum of Understanding signed in November 2023. It officially commenced its incubation and acceleration programs on February 27, 2025,” he said.

According to him, “all programs and work space at the Hub are completely free. Key features include world-class infrastructure fully powered by 631 solar PV panels; modern work spaces with co-working areas, work pods, and phone booths supported by high-speed 5G and uninterrupted power; smart training rooms, a cafeteria, VIP lounge and work space for more than 150 people.

“There are also incubation suites, and digital labs; structured incubation, acceleration, and training programs with a strong networking platform; and an inclusive, accessible design with ramps, lifts, and accessibility support throughout.

“To date, the Hub has transformed over 30,000 lives across more than 150 events and programs. This includes a community of over 10,000 students, corporate workers, civil servants, business owners and entrepreneurs spanning eight states; Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo and the FCT).

“170 participants trained through Learn2Earn, 3,000 entrepreneurs are being prepared through the DBN program with potential to create 2,000 jobs after the first year and a multiplier effect of 5-10x year on year, 9 startups accelerated and 10 incubated with Accelerate Africa. The Hub is run by a dedicated team of over 20 staff.” he stressed.

On access to funds and fund Tracking by its users, Temi explained that,” Startups access funding through structured pathways, including the accelerator program, which offers up to ₦10 million in funding and the DBN entrepreneurship program.”

One of the users of Ilorin Innovation Hub, Adenugba Joshua, who came to use the facility for his research work said, ”The experience has been impressive. The power supply here is constant, even the staff here are very respectful, they’re not saying because we use the facilities free, they will treat us anyhow. Working here has afforded me the opportunity to meet new people and connect with other people in different fields,” he said.

Adenugba also commended the government saying, “the government has really done a great job to make this available. I decided to just come here first and see what was happening and how I would be treated. You are free to choose where you want to sit, whether in an enclosed or open space, office-like or even sitting room type setting, everything is here. So it depends on what you want to do. I think it was designed for tech guys who just want to work. I come here mainly because of the power supply to charge my devices.”

Roqeeb Armasodun, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic told Saturday Vanguard that the innovation hub has greatly helped her in her studies.

“My result in the last semester was impressive because I ensured that I came here to study. The advantage for me is that I live around here, so it’s like this innovation hub is located here because of me. I sincerely thank Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for doing this, it has greatly helped the students, young entrepreneurs and tech guys. More kudos to him.” she said.

Accord Party presidential candidate and Co-Chairman of the Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has condemned the reported attack on human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and other protesters during a Democracy Day demonstration.

Hashim described the incident as a troubling development for Nigeria’s democratic space, stressing that the right to peaceful protest, free expression and civic participation are fundamental pillars of democracy.

He said Democracy Day should serve not only as a reminder of Nigeria’s return to civilian rule but also as a call to protect democratic values such as freedom of expression, justice, constitutionalism and the rule of law.

“Democracy is strengthened when citizens can freely speak, organise and demand accountability from those entrusted with power. Any attempt to suppress these freedoms weakens democracy itself,” he said.

The presidential candidate, who recently became co-chair of the Movement for Democratic Renewal alongside Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero, said the group was established to defend democratic space and prevent any erosion of civic freedoms.

Hashim also expressed concern over what he described as the continued harassment of Sowore, including issues surrounding the seizure of his passport, calling for due legal processes to be respected.

He said the Movement for Democratic Renewal would continue to mobilise civil society, labour groups and citizens committed to strengthening democratic institutions and protecting civic rights.

“Nigeria must not return to an era where dissent is treated as a crime and citizens are denied their democratic rights. The defence of democracy is the responsibility of all who believe in freedom and accountable leadership,” he said.

He urged security agencies and relevant authorities to respect citizens’ constitutional rights while maintaining public order.

Uganda has criticised air travel restrictions imposed by countries including the United States over an Ebola outbreak which has spilt over from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo as “unfair”.

The east African country’s response to the latest outbreak of the deadly haemorrhagic fever has been broadly praised by public health officials, with only two deaths out of 19 confirmed cases since the alarm was sounded in the DRC in mid-May.

Almost all of them were Congolese nationals who had crossed the border from their home country, where more than 676 cases have been confirmed and 136 people have died since May 15.

“Today, the Ugandan Health Ministry, together with the Civil Aviation Authority, Ambassadors, and airline operators serving Uganda, discussed the unfair travel restrictions imposed on Uganda due to the current Ebola situation,” Diana Atwine, permanent secretary for the health ministry, said on X on Friday.

“While we appreciate the need for vigilance, blanket restrictions undermine confidence in countries that report outbreaks openly, and are not commensurate with the actual risk.”

Besides the United States, Canada and the United Arab Emirates are among the countries to have imposed entry bans on travellers from Uganda, the DRC and neighbouring South Sudan as a result of the outbreak.

While the World Health Organization’s chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Kampala’s strategy on a visit to Uganda on Monday, the United Nations health agency warned on Friday that the outbreak was spreading to new areas in the neighbouring DRC.

No vaccine nor specific treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola responsible for the latest outbreak, the 17th to hit the vast central African country.

Spread by close contact and infected bodily fluids, the disease has killed more than 15,000 people in Africa over the past 50 years.

Governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Rivers State, Blessing Fubara, has dismissed suggestions that he is being propelled by a political godfather or serving as a proxy for his elder brother, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday night, the NDC flagbearer insisted that his political ambition is driven by a personal vision and conviction rather than any external influence.

“I don’t have a godfather but I have God the Father. You would also agree with me that if my ambition is determined by the grounds you are mentioning, it would mean I have no clear vision or focus for what I am working toward,” he said.

Blessing Fubara also sought to draw a distinction between his political views and those of the Rivers State governor, stressing that they do not share the same political ideology.

“My brother, Nigerians, and indeed the wider world saw what happened between him and his party. We have different political ideologies and individual perspectives,” he stated.

Addressing the political situation in Rivers State, the governorship hopeful said the focus should remain on addressing the state’s challenges rather than political narratives being promoted by different interests.

“It’s a trying moment for us in Rivers State and there are all sorts of narratives. They come with different narratives and try to set up a perspective for the people to run with but we are focused with our eyes on the ball that the sole of Rivers State must be rescued.”

Blessing Fubara formally entered the 2027 governorship race in May 2026 after obtaining the NDC’s expression of interest and nomination forms.

His emergence comes amid prolonged political tensions in Rivers State, largely stemming from the rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The dispute has triggered a series of political confrontations, including impeachment threats, rival legislative factions and multiple legal battles.

Governor Fubara subsequently pulled out of the All Progressives Congress governorship primaries, while Blessing Fubara announced his candidacy shortly afterwards.
