…says RCCG above politics

By Olayinka Latona

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has defended the pastoral credentials of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, stating that she was ordained as an assistant pastor in RCCG a decade before her husband assumed the presidency.

Speaking at the May monthly Holy Ghost Service tagged “Excellent Counsel”, held at the church’s sprawling 3 km by 3 km auditorium in Simawa, Ogun State, the revered cleric addressed criticism targeting the First Lady’s role within the church.

He revealed that Mrs Tinubu underwent the full rigours of the church’s spiritual formation process, including the baptismal class, the Workers in Training class, and the School of Disciples at the national headquarters before her ordination as an assistant pastor ten years ago.

Quoting scripture, Adeboye added, “There is no place in the Bible where it says the wife must dictate to the husband. What my Bible says is, ‘Husband, love your wife; wife, submit to your husband.'”

In his words: “Some people have been asking how we can allow the first lady to be a pastor in The Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG. Let me tell you one thing: the first lady did not join RCCG when she became first lady; she was ordained an assistant pastor 10 years ago. At that time, her husband was not even a contestant for the presidency. She passed through the baptismal class, workers in training class, and school of disciples at the national headquarters before she was ordained an assistant pastor 10 years ago.

“And she has not been promoted since then because there are still conditions she must satisfy before she can be ordained as a full pastor. And there is nowhere in the Bible where it says, “The wife must dictate to the husband.” What my Bible says is, “Husband, love your wife; wife, submit to your husband.”

The RCCG leader also noted that the First Lady has not received any promotion since her initial ordination, as there remain conditions she must satisfy before becoming a full pastor.

While declining to specify the three major offences that could lead to removal from pastoral office in RCCG, Adeboye confirmed that Mrs Tinubu “has not committed any of such offences”.

Pastor Adeboye also dismissed suggestions that the church is aligned with any political party, declaring that the RCCG remains a house of worship open to all Nigerians regardless of their political affiliation.

“Some people are saying RCCG is an APC church. I just smile. In RCCG, you will find a governor from the Peoples Democratic Party sitting down with a governor from the Labour Party, APC, and APGA. By the special help of God, we are representative of the whole nation, and that is what we will continue to be.”

The cleric made clear that while all politicians are welcome to worship, the pulpit remains off-limits for political speech.

“If you saw one governor among us today dancing and you were expecting he would be called forward to say something, we don’t do that. But if you come to worship with us, you are welcome. Our duty is to pray for everybody.”

2027 Presidency Already Decided By God

Turning to the political future, Adeboye offered a distinctly theological perspective on Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

“The one that will rule has been decided by God before we were born. He knows the end from the beginning,” he told the congregation.

“God is not going to sit in heaven scratching His mighty head with His everlasting hand, saying who should rule Nigeria in 2027. It has been decided before the foundation of the world.”

He urged worshippers to focus on their spiritual assignments: “Keep on praying, winning souls, and let your fruits abide. Face your business.”

Addressing recent comments by another preacher who described Adeboye, Bishop David Oyedepo, and Pastor William Kumuyi as “denominational fathers” rather than fathers of all Nigerian Christians, the RCCG leader agreed entirely.

“He is correct. I don’t want to be the father of all Christians in Nigeria. I am certified as being the father of RCCG, and that is enough assignment for me,” Adeboye said.

He clarified his position on national Christian leadership, stating that the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) holds that role. “Until he speaks, I cannot talk. That is why I don’t talk because I am under authority.”

Acknowledging that he has previously carried protest placards, Adeboye explained: “That was because the then chairman of CAN asked all Christians to go out for a peaceful protest. If he talks tomorrow and asks me to march, I will, and you will be with me. Until CAN speaks, I will keep my mouth shut.”

Among the political figures present at the service was Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who worshipped alongside other congregants without being called to address the gathering—consistent with the church’s policy.

Pastor Adeboye concluded with a passionate defence of his pastoral authority over church members, warning outsiders against interference.

“I will not allow any outsider to dictate to me how to deal with my own children. Even if you make a mistake, I will not allow an outsider to tell me what to do with my own children. I will defend you against anybody, any blogger or whatever who may say anything against you.”

He urged church members not to participate in criticism of fellow believers: “If anybody is criticising any of us, don’t join them. Don’t allow them to use you for politics.”

Turkish authorities have released more than 500 protesters arrested at May Day rallies in Istanbul, a lawyers’ association said Saturday.

Police cracked down on Friday’s demonstrations, firing tear gas to break them up and arresting hundreds of people.

All 576 people arrested were released by Saturday morning, including union official Basaran Aksu, the lawyers’ association CHD said on X.

The association’s Istanbul branch had deployed members into the city’s streets to document arrests and aid those detained.

The Istanbul governor’s office put the number of arrests at 575.

Another 47 people were arrested on April 28 ahead of the planned May Day rallies, of whom four have been placed in custody and nine on house arrest, CHD said.

The demonstrations were concentrated around Taksim Square, which the authorities have closed to rallies since a massive wave of anti-government protests in 2013.

Aksu had condemned the authorities for imposing a lockdown on the square, a symbolic site often used for mass gatherings in Turkey.

“You can’t close off a square to the workers of Turkey,” he said just before his arrest.

“Everyone uses Taksim, for official ceremonies, for celebrations. Only the labourers, the workers, the poor find the square closed to them.”

May Day, which celebrates workers and the working classes, sees a major police deployment in Turkey every year, with a large area in the heart of Istanbul sealed off.

Unions and civil society associations had called for the May 1 rallies under the slogan “Bread. Peace. Freedom.”

Several members of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State have died in a road accident while returning from the May Day celebrations in Ilorin, the state capital.

Vanguard gathered that the crash occurred on Friday evening along the Oke-Onigbin–Omu-Aran road.

Eyewitnesses said the accident happened after one of the tyres of the vehicle conveying the union members burst, causing the driver to lose control and leading to the fatal crash.

The Executive Chairman of Ekiti Local Government Council, Hon. Awelewa Olawale Gabriel, who confirmed the incident, described it as “a painful blow” to the council, the health sector, and the state at large.

“Our hearts are heavy. These were dedicated professionals who left their homes to celebrate the dignity of labour, only to meet this unfortunate fate on their way back. We have lost patriots who served our communities with compassion and commitment,” he said.

He noted that the tragedy has cast a dark shadow over what should have been a moment of unity and celebration for Nigerian workers, adding that the victims died in active service to humanity.

The chairman extended condolences to the bereaved families and the entire MHWUN community, praying for the repose of the deceased and strength for those left behind.

“The entire Ekiti Local Government Council stands with the MHWUN family at this difficult moment. We pray God Almighty to heal the injured, comfort the bereaved, and grant the departed eternal rest,” he added.

Survivors of the crash are currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained, while the council boss expressed hope for their speedy recovery.

As of press time, official casualty figures had yet to be confirmed, but the incident has plunged the local government and labour community into mourning.

In response, the Kwara State chapter of MHWUN has declared a three-day mourning period, directing members across the state to fly the union’s flag at half-mast in honour of their deceased colleagues.

The council chairman also assured that the local government would collaborate with the Kwara State Government and relevant agencies to support affected families and assist with the medical expenses of the injured.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

A senior state government official described the development as tragic, noting that a day meant to celebrate workers across Nigeria ended in sorrow in Kwara State.

By Demola Akinyemi, Ilorin

Terrorists have again struck in Tenibo community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing three mobile police officers in a fresh attack.

The incident comes barely 11 days after three soldiers were killed in Kemanji community following a gun battle that reportedly lasted over two hours. With the latest attack, six security personnel have been lost to terrorist activities in the state within two weeks.

Sources told Vanguard that the attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday, around midnight, when the assailants emerged from a nearby forest and launched an assault on a security base, killing the officers.

The development has reportedly triggered panic in Tenibo and neighbouring communities, with many residents fleeing their homes for safer locations.

Local sources said the attackers overran the security base before retreating into the forest after carrying out the killings. They noted that security operatives appear to be the primary targets, as the assailants often withdraw into the forest after attacks.

A staff member of the Kaiama Local Government, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.

A resident also called on the government to clear the forests allegedly being used as hideouts by the attackers.

“The forest where they are hiding is just about a kilometre from the community, making it easy for them to strike and retreat,” the source said.

“The government should clear the area and allow residents to farm there. That would help flush out the attackers and reduce these killings. Government cannot continue to watch while security personnel are being killed. Urgent action is needed.”

Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi Danladi, also confirmed the incident.

“Yes, it happened again this morning. The terrorists killed three of our mobile police officers,” he said.

“The local government is doing its best. We are working to strengthen collaboration with the state and federal governments to address this situation, as it is beyond what we can handle alone.”

By Musa Ubandawaki, Sokoto

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Saturday as a devastating fire razed the Sokoto State Secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), barely 24 hours after workers across the state marked the annual International Workers’ Day.

The inferno, which reportedly broke out at about 3:00 a.m., engulfed the entire building, destroying office equipment, critical documents, and other valuables, in what labour leaders have described as a crippling setback to union operations in the state.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the fire spread rapidly before emergency responders could contain it, leaving the secretariat in ruins by dawn.

While the exact cause of the incident remains unknown as of press time, many observers have linked the outbreak to recurring power surges from the national grid, an issue that has continued to generate concern across parts of the state.

Reacting to the development, Sokoto State NLC Chairman Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu, popularly known as “Jungle”, expressed deep anguish over the incident, describing it as both “unfortunate and disheartening”.

“This is a painful loss for the labour movement in Sokoto. The extent of destruction is enormous, and it comes at a time we were just reflecting on the significance of workers’ welfare and unity,” he said.

The incident has reignited calls for urgent improvements in Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with stakeholders warning that unchecked electricity fluctuations pose a growing threat to lives and property nationwide.

As investigations begin into the cause of the fire, labour leaders and concerned citizens are urging authorities to ensure a thorough probe, while also calling for immediate support to rebuild the secretariat and restore union activities in Sokoto.

The blaze adds to a troubling pattern of fire incidents linked to electrical faults across the country, underscoring the urgent need for systemic reforms in the power sector to avert further disasters.

As of the filling of this report, the fire is still burning, with the entire building reduced to ashes.

By James Ogunnaike, Abeokuta

The Ogun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, has apprehended five suspected kidnappers in a forest around the Rounder area of the Abeokuta North local government area of the state, following a coordinated security operation.

The arrests were made after a combination of actionable intelligence and sustained surveillance activities within the forest, which has recently drawn concern from nearby communities over security threats.

According to a reliable source within the corps, who pleaded anonymity, the operation began with the arrest of two suspects on April 29 at about 8 p.m. The initial breakthrough was achieved with the assistance of local hunters who possess deep knowledge of the area.

The source added that security operatives subsequently intensified their efforts, leading to the arrest of three additional suspects approximately thirteen hours after the first arrest, in a follow-up operation within the same forest area.

It added that the operation was prompted by repeated complaints from residents of surrounding communities, who had reported suspicious movements and the presence of unknown individuals believed to be hiding in the forest.

The suspects, who are believed to be Fulani herdsmen, had allegedly been under surveillance for some time before the operation was carried out, ensuring a strategic and coordinated approach to their arrest.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

He added that the police have commenced discreet enquiries to determine the extent of the suspects’ involvement in kidnapping activities and other related crimes in the area.

Security agencies in the state have reassured residents of their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasising that collaborative efforts between local vigilantes and formal security outfits remain crucial in tackling insecurity.

Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, as efforts continue to rid the state of criminal elements.

By Emma Una, CALABAR

The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Students’ Union Government Director of Sports, Comrade Solomon Nya, and two other colleagues have reportedly died in auto crash.

The accident which occurred on the evening of May 1 at Odukpani, in the outskirts of Calabar, left many others with serious injuries.

“The SUG President is unconscious as I speak with you now. He is in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital emergency unit, and he prays he makes it.” An eyewitness told Vanguard on the phone.

The source said some of the female victims had their limbs cut in the crash, while the bodies of the director of sports and the others who died on the spot have been deposited at the mortuary of the UCTH.

This is a very sad event. We pray the SUG President makes it because he was severely injured in the accident.”

The school is yet to react to the incident, ostensibly because yesterday was a public holiday and today, Saturday, is a weekend.

By Favour Ulebor, Abuja

The federal government has warned Nigerians to disregard any fake diplomatic recruitment message currently circulating online, describing it as fraudulent and designed to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

In a press statement signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Saturday, the ministry said the false message claimed to offer employment in the Nigerian Diplomatic Service under the Consular Section of Nigerian embassies abroad.

The ministry explained that the fraudulent message also claimed that some applicants had been shortlisted for diplomatic appointments and directed them to make payments for the processing of a so-called “credence note”.

It stated that the communication was entirely fake and the handiwork of fraudsters seeking to extort money from unsuspecting Nigerians.

The ministry stressed that Nigerian missions abroad are currently not recruiting and warned the public not to fall victim to the scam.

It also clarified that recruitment exercises into the Ministry and the Nigerian Foreign Service are not conducted through email messages, WhatsApp platforms, or unsolicited contacts.

It explained that all legitimate recruitment into the Nigerian Foreign Service is conducted officially through the Federal Civil Service Commission.

According to the statement, “The ministry wishes to state unequivocally that the communication is fake and misleading and the handiwork of unscrupulous elements seeking to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

“No fees are required at any stage of recruitment or diplomatic postings within the ministry or Nigeria’s missions abroad.

“The Ministry does not authorise any individual or entity to request payments on its behalf for employment or diplomatic appointments.”

The Ministry also accused the fraudsters of deliberately attempting to mislead the public by referencing security clearance procedures and falsely attributing the message to the Ministry’s spokesperson.

“The inclusion of a reference to DSS clearance and attribution to the ministry’s spokesperson in the fraudulent message is a deliberate attempt to deceive the public,” the statement said.

The Ministry advised members of the public to completely ignore such messages and report anyone demanding money for diplomatic appointments or recruitment.

It urged victims or persons who may have received similar messages to report immediately to security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, integrity and the protection of Nigerians from fraudulent schemes, adding that enquiries and verification should only be made through its official communication channels.

. Dismisses Wabara’s purported expulsion

By Steve Oko

UMUAHIA – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Abia State chapter, has backed the decision of the party’s Board of Trustees led by Senator Adolphus Wabara to fill the leadership gap in the party following Thursday’s Supreme Court’s judgment that voided the 2025 Ibadan Convention.

The apex court judgment nullified the convention that produced the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee NWC; and also upheld the suspension of former National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, alongside other key officers, thus creating a leadership vacuum in the former ruling party.

Abia PDP dismissed as baseless, claims that the party’s BoT Chairman, Senator Wabara, was expelled from the party.

Chairman of the Abia PDP Caretaker Committee, Ikpegbu Emeka-Yellow, made the clarification while reacting to a statement by Elder Abraham Amah, claiming that Wabara was expelled.

Emeka-Yellow said the purported expulsion of Wabara was not only overturned by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) but also invalidated by the courts.

He further argued that Amah lacked the authority to take such action, “having ceased to be the Abia PDP Chairman before the purported expulsion”.

“The claim that Senator Wabara was expelled is false and legally untenable. The National Working Committee had since disowned and reversed that decision, while the court equally voided it.”

He hailed the Supreme Court ruling, describing it as a decisive blow against what he termed “political rascality” within the party.

“The judgment has laid to rest attempts by some elements to destabilise the PDP. It reinforces the supremacy of the law—no one can exercise powers they do not possess,” he said.

Despite the nullification of the Ibadan Convention, Emeka-Yellow described the court’s affirmation of the suspension of some party officials as a major victory.

He expressed confidence in the BoT’s intervention, noting that it had stabilised the party by stepping in to fill the leadership vacuum.

“The party is now anchored on the Board of Trustees under Senator Wabara. This is the legitimate leadership for now, pending the emergence of a new leadership structure,” he added.

The PDP chieftain urged party members to remain calm and avoid distractions, assuring that the party would participate fully in the 2027 general elections.

He also maintained that the congress which produced Amah “had been nullified by both the High Court and the Court of Appeal, rendering his claims and actions invalid.”

“As it stands, Amah is no longer the PDP Chairman in Abia. The courts have been clear on this. Any claim he makes to that effect should be disregarded,” Emeka-Yellow stated.

He disclosed that steps were underway to formalise the party’s leadership structàure, with the BoT expected to convene and initiate processes that would lead to the constitution of an interim leadership through the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Reaffirming the PDP’s resilience, Emeka-Yellow said the party remained “the mother of all political parties” in Nigeria and could not be undermined by internal or external forces.

He thanked the judiciary for what he described as restoring confidence in Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that the Supreme Court verdict had effectively ended the lingering leadership crisis within the party.

Miami will host seven World Cup games, including the third-place playoff, while Los Angeles will host eight, including the USA team’s opening match and a quarterfinal. You will therefore have lots of free days in between games, which is ideal for visiting some of the world’s top amusement parks.

Universal Studios Hollywood is one of the best tourist destinations in Los Angeles. You may see well-known movie sets in this hybrid of a theme park and a real film studio. In addition, the experience is more organic and daring in Miami. Everglades Safari Park, which is around 40 minutes from the city, is a well-liked destination.

The Messi Golden Chicken Sandwich, which comes with seasoned fries and a crispy chicken fillet covered with marinara sauce, melted mozzarella cheese, and garlic aioli, is available at Hard Rock Cafe Miami. It was made to remind Messi of home and was influenced by his favorite flavors.

Attendees of the 2026 World Cup in Miami can use this opportunity to sample a unique sandwich made by Lionel Messi. Miami has developed some unusual dining alternatives since he became the city’s face, and one of the most well-liked among supporters is the Messi Sandwich.

When you travel to Los Angeles for a World Cup game, you’ll possibly hear that David Beckham’s arrival significantly altered American football. He increased the sport’s appeal to American fans, and the city gave him a unique tribute.

Today, a large number of people travel from all over the world to take pictures at his legendary statue spot and honour the player who helped elevate football in the United States.

In addition to being America’s Independence Day, July 4, 2026 will commemorate 250 years since the nation’s founding. The East Coast will host the majority of the major festivities, particularly in historic cities like Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

Fans will get a rare chance to mix football with national celebrations because this time frame also coincides with the World Cup.

Cowboy experience at Dallas/FortWorth

Dallas is one of the greatest locations to see “true America” during the World Cup because it will host the most matches (9).

However, you must go 30 to 50 minutes west to Fort Worth in order to experience the authentic Wild West vibe in While Fort Worth where they preserve the cowboy traditions.

The Historic Stockyards are the primary destination. With wooden streets and a strong cowboy vibe, this region, which was once one of the largest cattle markets in the United States, retains its classic western flavor today.

You can particularly enjoy The Herd, a free daily spectacle when actual cowboys drive longhorn cattle along the main street at 11:30 and 16:00, is one of the attractions.

A senior Iranian military officer said on Saturday that renewed fighting between the US and Iran was “likely”, hours after President Donald Trump said he was “not satisfied” with a new Iranian negotiating proposal.

Iran delivered the draft to mediator Pakistan on Thursday evening, state media reported without detailing its contents.

The war, launched by the United States and Israel in late February, has been on hold since April 8, with one failed round of peace talks having taken place in Pakistan since then.

“At this moment I’m not satisfied with what they’re offering,” Trump told reporters, blaming stalled talks on “tremendous discord” within Iran’s leadership.

“Do we want to go and just blast the hell out of them and finish them forever — or do we want to try and make a deal?” he added, saying he would “prefer not” to take the first option “on a human basis”.

On Saturday morning, Mohammad Jafar Asadi, a senior figure in the Iranian military’s central command, said “a renewed conflict between Iran and the United States is likely”, in quotes published by Iran’s Fars news agency.

“Evidence has shown that the United States is not committed to any promises or agreements,” he added.

– ‘Stuck in purgatory’ –

Iran’s judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei said on Friday that his country had “never shied away from negotiations”, but added it would not accept an “imposition” of peace terms.

The White House has declined to provide details on the latest Iranian proposal, but news site Axios reported that US envoy Steve Witkoff had submitted amendments putting Tehran’s nuclear programme back on the negotiating table.

The changes reportedly include demands that Iran not move enriched uranium from bombed sites or resume activity there during talks.

News of the Iranian proposal briefly pushed oil prices down nearly five percent, though they remain about 50 percent above pre-war levels amid the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has maintained a stranglehold on the strait since the war began, choking off major flows of oil, gas and fertiliser to the world economy, while the United States has imposed a counter-blockade on Iranian ports.

Tehran resident Amir told Paris-based AFP journalists that the stalemate “feels like we are stuck in purgatory”, and he expressed little hope for the Iranian proposal.

“This is all to waste time,” he said, predicting the United States and Israel “will attack again”.

Despite the ceasefire in the Gulf, fighting has continued in Lebanon, where Israel has carried out deadly strikes despite a separate truce with the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.

Lebanon’s health ministry said 13 people were killed in strikes in the south, including in the town of Habboush, where the Israeli military had issued an evacuation warning.

Meanwhile, Washington announced late Friday it had approved major arms sales to its allies in the Middle East, including a $4 billion Patriot missile deal with Qatar and nearly $1 billion in precision weapons systems to Israel.

– ‘Terminated’ –

In Washington, lawmakers were wrestling with a legal dispute over whether Trump had breached a deadline to seek congressional approval for the war.

Administration officials argue that the ceasefire pauses a 60-day limit, after which congressional authorisation would be required — a claim disputed by opposition Democrats.

Trump faces growing domestic pressure, with inflation rising, no clear victory in sight and midterm elections approaching.

“There has been no exchange of fire between United States Forces and Iran since April 7, 2026,” Trump said in letters to congressional leaders, adding that the hostilities “have terminated”.

In Iran, the war’s economic toll is deepening.

Washington has imposed new sanctions on three Iranian currency firms and warned others against paying a “toll” for safe passage through Hormuz, as demanded by Iran.

The US military says its blockade of Iranian ports has stopped $6 billion in Iranian oil exports, while inflation in Iran, already high before the war, has surged past 50 percent.

“For many people, paying rent and even buying food has become difficult, and some have nothing left at all,” 28-year-old Iranian Mahyar told an AFP reporter based outside the country.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said on Friday that “the owners of damaged businesses should avoid, as much as possible, layoffs and separation of their workforce”. He also threatened Iran’s enemies with “economic and cultural jihad”.

By Folarin Kehinde

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Adejare Adeboye, has attributed the longevity and strength of his marriage to discipline, forgiveness, and constant communication, revealing that he and his wife have remained on honeymoon decades after tying the knot.

Adeboye made the remark during the church’s May Holy Ghost Service themed Excellent Counsel, where he offered practical guidance on sustaining healthy marriages.

“If you are married, take my counsel. I’ve been married now since 1967. By the grace of God, I’m still on honeymoon, because under no circumstance will I go to bed without settling with my wife.”. he said.

The cleric explained that one of the key principles guiding his marriage is the refusal to allow unresolved conflicts linger overnight. Citing biblical injunctions, he urged couples to settle disagreements before going to bed.

“Under no circumstance must the sun go down on your anger,” he said, referencing Ephesians 4:26. “Before we sleep, we settle.”

He noted that misunderstandings are inevitable in any relationship, especially among young couples, but emphasized that maturity lies in prompt reconciliation.

Sharing personal insight, Adeboye admitted that he often takes responsibility during disagreements to ensure peace prevails. According to him, humility and willingness to make amends are essential ingredients for marital stability.

Adeboye also encouraged couples to see themselves as prayer partners, stressing the importance of mutual trust and openness. He warned against sharing sensitive marital issues indiscriminately with outsiders, noting that such actions could expose the relationship to unnecessary risks.

“When husband and wife pray together, they can bear their hearts to each other,” he said, adding that unity in the home strengthens the bond between partners.

Adeboye concluded by urging married couples to embrace forgiveness, effective communication, and spiritual alignment as foundations for enduring relationships, noting that these principles have sustained his own marriage for decades.

Socialite E-Money has congratulated comedian and online streamer Carter Efe on defeating controversial singer Portable, promising to honour his pledge of N50 million.

Efe defeated Portable early Saturday in a game which had all three judges rule 27–30 in favour of Efe.

Portable’s loss at the Chaos in the Ring 4 event held at the Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, meant the end of his reign as celebrity boxing champion.

E-Money, born Emeka Okonkwo, reaffirmed his commitment after Balmoral Group Promotions CEO, Ezekiel Adamu, put the question to him at the end of the fight.

“You know we put our money where our mouth is, and so congratulations Carter on your win. N50 million for you,” he said.

Adamu, on his part, said the event had delivered on all its promises.

“We promised Chaos in the Ring and we have delivered very entertaining fights tonight. There is more coming, thanks to everyone that made this a success and to the fighters for the great display,” he said.

In the co-main event, Godday Appah was crowned the new WBO Africa cruiserweight champion after defeating Ezra Arenyeka by split decision.

The bout had been billed as a symbolic WBO Peace Fight between the Itsekiri and Ijaw communities of the Niger Delta.

The same night, Basit Adebayo claimed the WBO Africa title with a unanimous decision victory over former WABU champion, Loren Japhet.

By Demola Akinyemi

Terrorists again struck at Tenibo community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing three mobile police officers.

This came 11 days after three soldiers were killed at Kemanji community following more than two hours of gunfight.

Vanguard reliably gathered that the latest development has caused pandemonium in Tenibo and neighbouring communities, as residents have begun relocating from their homes to safer communities.

The latest tragedy, it was gathered, happened in the wee hours of Saturday, around midnight. Terrorists sneaked out from the forest to attack the security base and shot three mobile police officers dead.

Local sources who confided in Vanguard Saturday morning said that the terrorists apparently overwhelmed the security base as they escaped to the forests after the fatal shooting.

A member of staff at Kaiama Local Government, who preferred not to be mentioned in print, also confirmed the development.

A local, who craved anonymity, urged the government to clear the forests and allow residents to farm there.

“The thick forest where the terrorists are hiding is just about a kilometre from the community, so it makes it easy for them to come out, attack the security people and return to the thick forest.

”I know the place is very big, but the government can afford to clear the whole place, chase away the terrorists and encourage residents to farm there. This would largely stop the killings.

“Government can’t just be looking while terrorists are killing soldiers and our police like chickens; they’re also human beings like us. Something must be done urgently,” he said.

Chairman of Kaima Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Danladi, confirmed the development in an interview with Vanguard on Saturday.

“Yes, the development again happened this morning, the terrorists killed three of our mobile police officers.

“The local government is trying its best, we are evolving a synergy with the state and federal governments to stop this kind of unfortunate development. It’s not something we can do alone,” he said.

By Akpokona Omafuaire

Seven years after the Utorogun Independent Power Project (IPP) was announced with high expectations, stakeholders are still arguing over why the project has not been completed.

The project, which was expected to improve electricity supply and support development in Otughievwen, Otor Udu and Iwhrekan communities, is widely seen as unsuccessful. However, there is no agreement on who is responsible for its current state.

Zik Gbemre, a native of Iwhrekan in April 25, 2026 while writing to set the record straight accused the Utorogu Project-Global Memorandum of Understanding (PGMoU) structure and formerly NPDC of not disclosing certain facts in the project.

According to him, “the people of Otor-Udu, Otughievwen, and Iwhrekan were promised a transformative independent power plant that would deliver uninterrupted electricity to their communities. Seven years later, that promise remains unfulfilled. It is time to present the facts clearly and demand accountability, transparency, and a path forward.

Key clarifications

“ND Western Ltd is not connected to the failed Independent power project under the Utorogu PGMoU. The project was fully funded by NEPL (formerly NPDC) and executed through the Utorogu PGMoU structure. Community members were led to believe the independent power plant would provide stable, uninterrupted power, with adequate technical design and support systems. The installed plan reportedly involved two gas generators without backup systems, contrary to best practice for independent power generation.

The communities were not informed they would be required to purchase gas from the Utorogu Gas Plant to run the facility once completed. No clear contingency, redundancy, or sustainability framework was communicated to the host communities.

Concerns raised

“Serious concerns have therefore emerged regarding: Lack of transparency between NEPL representatives and the PGMoU board at project inception; Secrecy surrounding key decisions and financial transactions; Failure to deliver on a project that was presented as a long-term solution to electricity challenges in the host communities; Absence of backup generation capacity, raising questions about the technical planning of the project and the fairness of requiring gas-producing host communities to pay for gas to power a local plant meant to serve them.

Call for accountability and investigation

“Given the scale of the failure and the public interest involved, there is a strong call for relevant authorities including law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies to review the project from inception to date, examine project funding and expenditure, contractual and technical decisions, the roles played by NEPL community relations personnel at the time and the NEPL community relations personnel at the time.

The way forward

“The three communities continue to host critical gas infrastructure that supports Nigeria’s domestic power supply, industries, and exports. It is only fair that they benefit from reliable electricity. There is a strong case for: A new, properly designed independent power plant of at least 10MW capacity; Transparent supervision and execution by a competent operator like ND Western Ltd; Clear agreements on gas supply terms that recognize host community contributions; Community inclusion in oversight and monitoring from start to finish and Technical design that includes redundancy and sustainability.

A plea for prevention, not crisis

“These issues should be addressed constructively and urgently to prevent frustration from escalating into wider unrest. Nigeria has seen how unresolved grievances in host communities can evolve into long-term crises. Dialogue, transparency, and corrective action now can prevent future conflict. The people of Otor-Udu, Otughievwen, and Iwhrekan deserve answers, accountability, and most importantly a working power solution. Setting the record straight is the first step toward justice and development”, Gbemre stated.

Management committee’s position

In his reaction, the Secretary of the Management Committee of the Project-Global Memorandum of Understanding (PGMOU) for the NAG-3 project in OML 34, Comrade Igho Onobraekpeyan, dismissed as misleading claims by activist, Chief Zik Gbemre regarding the Independent Power Plant (IPP) project initiated by host communities in Delta State.

Onobraekpeyan provided a detailed account of the conception, funding, execution, and current status of the power project serving the communities of Otor-Udu, Iwhrekan, and Otughievwen.

The PGMOU, involving NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL) and the host communities, is overseen by a Management Committee chaired by Dr. A. E. Ideh, with Onobraekpeyan serving as Secretary.

Project origin and funding structure

Onobraekpeyan explained that the IPP project was conceived following negotiations between the communities and NEPL in September 2020, stemming from the development of the NAG-3 gas plant in the Utorogun area. As part of the agreement, the communities receive an annual Community Development Support (CDS) fund of N200 million.

He noted that although the communities initially requested that NEPL directly provide electricity, the company declined, prompting the communities to independently channel the CDS funds into developing their own power infrastructure.

According to him, six annual payments totaling ¦ 1.2 billion have been made, though only 75 percent, about ¦ 900 million, was allocated directly to the IPP project after statutory deductions for administrative and community structures.

From vision to execution

A feasibility study conducted at the onset of the project in 2021 revealed that the combined energy needs of the three communities stood at approximately 1.4 megawatts. However, due to funding constraints, the committee opted to begin with a one-megawatt facility, with provisions for future expansion. “We deliberately started with one megawatt because of limited funds, but we have built the infrastructure to scale up to four megawatts and beyond,” Onobraekpeyan said.

He highlighted the impact of exchange rate volatility on project costs, noting that the naira’s depreciation significantly reduced the value of available funds. At the time of procurement, a single 500KVA gas-powered generator cost about ¦ 120 million, requiring full upfront payment.

Despite these challenges, the committee proceeded with the acquisition of two generators, construction of the power plant, and supporting infrastructure, including administrative buildings, access roads, and flood mitigation structures.

The project reached completion in 2024, with technical testing conducted between October and December 2025 by representatives of the equipment manufacturers.

Onobraekpeyan confirmed that the facility successfully generated and distributed electricity during test runs, demonstrating its operational viability.

He explained that the plant is capable of supplying electricity to residential users and small businesses for up to 18 hours daily, though this may drop to about 12 hours when larger commercial users such as hotels are included.

Gas supply, the major constraint

He identified gas supply as the primary challenge hindering full operations, stating that reliance on compressed natural gas (CNG) is financially unsustainable.

“A single 7,500 standard cubic metre skid of gas costs about ¦ 4.8 million and lasts just three days. Monthly consumption could reach up to 100,000 SCM, making it impractical for continuous operation,” he said. He clarified that securing gas supply is the responsibility of community leadership, who have already engaged NEPL on the matter.

Metering and sustainability

Onobraekpeyan also stressed the importance of metering to ensure efficient electricity distribution and prevent wastage, revealing that discussions were ongoing with service providers to install meters across the communities.

Responding to Gbemre’s criticism that the project was a failure, Onobraekpeyan described the claims as inaccurate and driven by personal interests. He alleged a conflict of interest, claiming that Gbemre had recommended a company allegedly linked to his family for the project’s overhaul.

“It is misleading to label the project a failure when it has been completed and tested. The issue is not engineering failure but sustainability, particularly gas supply,” he stated.

He further argued that the project represents a significant achievement for the host communities, demonstrating local capacity in executing complex infrastructure projects.

While welcoming constructive criticism, Onobraekpeyan urged stakeholders, including activists and oil companies, to support efforts to secure gas supply and expand the facility. He noted that the current infrastructure can be scaled up to five megawatts, with additional land available for expansion to as much as 20 megawatts, potentially serving wider areas in Udu and Ughelli South Local Government Areas. “This is a work in progress. What the communities have achieved with limited resources should be encouraged and built upon, not discredited,” he said.

As the debate continues, many observers believe the focus should now shift from blame to accountability and solutions. Seven years on, the Utorogun IPP remains a symbol of both high hopes and unmet expectations in the power sector.

Controversial singer Portable has accused his opponent Carter Efe of colluding with organisers of the celebrity boxing match to rob him of the title.

Efe, an online streamer, defeated Portable early Saturday in a game which had all three judges rule 27–30 in favour of Efe. Portable’s loss meant the end of his reign as celebrity boxing champion.

However, in a live video on Instagram, Portable, born Habeeb Badmus, claimed he was robbed.

He said, “I was robbed. Carter Efe was not professional enough. He was struggling with his long hands and height. I threw him many punches. Why didn’t you people count them? Any blow that I threw at him ought to count, even if it meets him on the shoulder or hand. And to the organisers, I want my stream money amounting to about N200 million. Just give me my money before I cause trouble.

“They did ojoro for me. All of you are mad. Carter Efe was just holding my neck. I was punching him too but you people are not talking about that. They knew he was tall and had long hands but still put him in a boxing match with me.”

Despite the loss, the singer said he was unbothered about relinquishing his title, stressing that family meant more to him than belts.

“You can only buy a belt with money, but a child cannot be bought. You people cheated. They can’t pay the money amounting to the sum of N23 billion. I thought I was going to dance with my belt but I ended up with my new baby.

“My wife just gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. I value that more than a belt. You can buy the belt but not my child,” he said.

By Uzor Maxim Uzoatu

I have been living in the trenches ever since I was born in this country called Nigeria. The comfort zone has never been my portion, and the good life does not mean anything to me. In fact one old friend nearly collapsed when he saw me wearing a babanriga in Asaba during my daughter’s wedding the other day. As far as the man’s concerned I was joined together like needle and thread with rugged jeans trousers and T-shirt from the beginning of life.

Of course one must perforce be properly radically dressed to do battle with oppressive authority all the time. It is in my constitution to make very powerful enemies.

It’s as though I cannot stop myself from fighting diabolical principalities and powers. There is this friend of mine who keeps saying that one of the wonders of the world for him is that I’m still alive!

The thoughts on my always squaring up with the high and mighty seized my consciousness after discovering a “Thank-You” card in a disused bag in my house.

The address atop the card reads: “C/o P.O. Box 1667 Mushin, Lagos. 4th July, 2002.”

The message of the card to me goes thusly: “Dear Maxim, No words could ever say enough to thank You for all You do – All the same, thank You for your kindness day after day. Thank You for caring the way You do. SIGNED: C.C. Ahaneku – For & on behalf of the 1,000 workers Victimised out of the CBN service in 1996 & 1998.”

The sight of the card brought back memories of my encounter with the one thousand workers unjustly sacked from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) back in time. The sacked CBN workers met me through a handful of their representatives while I was working for a Lagos-based national daily newspaper owned by one of the richest men in Nigeria.

The workers told me how they had taken their plight to virtually all the newspapers only to end up not getting their complaints published. It was an acquaintance of mine who asked them to see “Borojah” if they truly wanted a journalist who would dare all odds to publish their story. I heard the workers out and instantly knew that they had a good story that needed to be published for the general public to know. I told them that I would first publish their story after crosschecking all the facts with the CBN, and then I would get the newspaper to do an editorial on the matter thereafter.

The workers were visibly happy and started murmuring amongst themselves on how to raise the money to pay me for my efforts!

I stopped them short by stressing that if they talked about giving me any money I would send them all away and publish no story. One of the workers looked at me steadily and shouted: “What that man told us about him is true o!”

Let me be clear: monetary wealth, social position, class, grade, title, recognition, influence, clout, honorifics do not count with me.

I simply forged ahead to explore all the angles of the story from all the diverse sources, and I was warned that I was venturing into an area angels feared to tread.

I told all my sources that I was ready to face all eventualities, come what may. The story was then published in the newspaper, and all hell broke loose as the stooges of the owner of the newspaper threatened me with an instant sack. While the toadies of the publisher were still talking about sacking me, an editorial on the sacked CBN workers was published in the same newspaper!

I got to the office on the day the bombshell editorial came out, and there was this helluva shouting match before I walked away without waiting to receive the sack letter.

The bank workers came to the newspaper house and learnt that I had been sacked because of them. I heard from some of my friends still working in the newspaper that the bank workers planned to raise some money amongst themselves to support me and my family, but they did not know my home address. I sent word back to them that I did not need any support or charity or whatever from anybody. I guess it was through a friend of mine that they traced me to the home of my friend, Adewale Maja-Pearce, where they gave me the “Thank-You” card.

They also came with some money for me which I turned down, stressing that they had more burdens on their heads than my poor self. Some of them had tears in their eyes, saying that they knew I had a young family. I told them if they needed beer to drink, my good friend Adewale could buy them some beers!

They could not understand how I was making a light issue of such a tragic matter. I did the best I could to get them out of their mournful mood before they departed. Joblessness does not frighten The Poet. Beyond being jobless, the miracle of my survival in the trenches is receiving its greatest threat ever now that my former comrades are boasting of being askaris and government informants who can kpai me in solidarity with raw power in today’s Nigeria! Thank God that this government happened!

Hezbollah’s cheap fibre-optic drones are creating new challenges for Israeli troops in southern Lebanon, forcing the military to adapt its tactics against an increasingly lethal threat.

The Israeli military — considered one of the most advanced in the world — has confirmed two soldiers and one civilian contractor killed in explosive drone attacks in under a week, with several others wounded despite a ceasefire in place since mid-April.

The devices are small, cheap and readily available, like “children’s toys”, explained Orna Mizrahi, a senior researcher at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies (INSS).

The military “does not have nowadays any response for that, because they didn’t prepare themselves for such low-tech explosives”, she told AFP.

Israel has been fighting Lebanese Hezbollah since early March, deploying troops into the neighbouring country’s south to confront the Iran-backed militant group.

Since then, violence has continued, with both sides accusing each other of breaching the ceasefire.

Unlike conventional drones guided by GPS or radio, which can therefore be jammed, Hezbollah is using devices linked to their launch site by a thin fibre-optic cable that can stretch for dozens of kilometres.

Operators pilot the drones in first-person view (FPV) using screens or virtual reality goggles that require limited training.

“Since the drone does not transmit the image via radio broadcast and does not receive guidance commands via a radio receiver, it cannot be detected by electronic intelligence means or blocked through electronic warfare,” said Arie Aviram, an expert who has written on the subject for the INSS.

The drones’ speed and precision means they can cause considerable damage to Israeli targets, and their lack of electronic traces leaves troops reliant on radar or visual detection, which often comes too late.

– Asymmetrical warfare –

Hezbollah’s use of these drones is characteristic of asymmetrical warfare, explained INSS researcher Mizrahi.

In recent days, Hezbollah has relied more on these drones, a notable shift from the barrages of rockets it unleashed in the weeks after the war broke out.

Experts say the cost of assembling the fibre-optic drones can range from just a few hundred dollars to around $4,000 depending on the quality and type of components, which can be bought on online platforms such as AliExpress.

On Friday, the Lebanese militant group’s media chief Youssef al Zein confirmed the group was using the drones and said they were being manufactured in Lebanon.

“We are aware of the enemy’s superiority, but at the same time we are exploiting its weak points,” he said.

For Israel, shooting down cheap drones using sophisticated air defences and fighter jets is unsustainable and costly.

Aviram said that lasers, like those used by Israel’s Iron Beam air defence system, could be a suitable solution “provided they were widely deployed”, which is not yet the case.

Indicating the challenge posed by these devices, the Israeli defence ministry put out a public call on April 11 for “proposals to identify additional capabilities to address the threat of fibre-optic-controlled FPV drones”.

– Nets and barriers –

A video shared on social media by prominent Israeli journalist Amit Segal on Wednesday appeared to show military vehicles draped in netting to protect against drones. AFP was unable to verify the footage.

A senior military official told journalists on Tuesday that “so far, we’re using force protection technologies and other protections that we learned from other places, from our own experience with nets, with barriers”.

“But it’s a threat that we’re still adapting to, there’s nothing that is foolproof,” the official added, noting that the military was “learning” from the war in Ukraine, where fibre-optic drones are now common.

Israeli news website Mako reported in 2024 that Ukraine — which has become a world-leading drone expert since Russia’s invasion — offered its expertise to Israel several years ago but was rebuffed.

“There was no concrete response,” Ukraine’s former defence minister Oleksii Reznikov told Mako at the time.

Asked by AFP about the challenges posed by fibre-optic explosive drones, the Israeli military said troops had in recent weeks “conducted an in-depth analysis of how this threat operates and how Hezbollah employs it”.

“The IDF is monitoring the drone threat and developing operational methods to address it,” it said, adding that troops on the ground were “continuously working to improve and adapt their systems in order to deal with the evolving threat”.
