“I am about to move into a new home.. YEAH!! I have always dreamed of having my bedroom in a romantic PURPLE. Of course the entire room wouldn’t be purple but my comforter would set the tone for the room. Recently my love and I were looking and decided on 4 colors for our new home. HE decided that the walls in the bedroom can be TEMPE STAR. While I totally agree this color must go on a wall in our home, He crushed my dream of PURPLE in my bedroom or did he??? Help!! I totally need bedroom ideas for both of us to be happy.”

As a purple lover myself, I know exactly where you are coming from! You are definitely on the right track by not wanting to paint the entire room purple, I’ve made that mistake before. I choose a rich medium tone purple and did my entire room, it was total overkill. Your best bet is using purple as an accent color, perhaps as an accent wall behind your bed. However, we do need to consider your significant other’s likes in this decision, and it seems like he is not too keen on a purple master bedroom (I don’t blame him at all, it is a girlie color and he is a man). So, considering the fact that he wants to go in a completely different color direction in the room with “Tempe Star,” we should try to find ways to incorporate both of your likes. One idea is to use the “Tempe Star” as the accent wall behind your bed and then choose a soft purple-based neutral as the other walls in the room (I like Benjamin Moore’s “Slip” AF-605) from their new Affinity line. This way you both get a little of what you want, and the result is a room that is somewhat romantic and soft, and somewhat bold and masculine.

Regarding your comforter, you mentioned that it will set the tone of the room. Is the comforter purple? If so, you will definitely have your beloved purple in the room, just maybe not on the walls. You could also introduce more purple in the space with decorative accents like throw pillows, a floor covering, art and decorative accessories.

Is your office chair uncomfortable, old or just plain ugly?  Then it’s time to Get Your Sit Together with the help of Vastu!

We’re excited to announce the Get Your Sit Together contest that will give contestants the chance to win a Generation by Knoll® chair. Entering is super-easy, too!

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Get a digital camera and take a picture of your office chair. Nothing too fancy, just make sure we can clearly see the chair (preferably in its natural environment).

Step 2: Upload the picture of your chair to our Facebook fan page during the Picture-Posting period from March 8th to March 21st at 11:59pm EST. When you upload your photo, write a short 1-2 sentence blurb describing why you want or need a new office chair.

Step 3: Get your friends, family and anyone else you know to visit facebook.com/vastu and vote for your chair by leaving a comment on your photo during our Voting period from March 22nd to March 29th at 11:59pm EST.  Please don’t vote before March 22nd.  We want all entries to be judged fairly.

Distant Forest

Showing his artwork for the first time in the Washington, D.C. region, Vastu is featuring works from Allen Levy until mid April. “HELP! I found out my mother-in-law is planning to come stay with my family for three weeks this summer.  We don’t really have a guest room… Just a small library.  Any suggestions on how to transform this room from a library to a guest room?  There isn’t any room for a pull-out sofa an we don’t want to spend alot on this project.”

If you have room for a 78″ sofa, I recommend getting a sofa that length that is at least 38″ – 40″ D with loose back cushions and loose seat cushions.  This way, when the back cushions are removed, the space left is about the size of a twin mattress – a comfortable alternative to an actual bed.  And, the loose seat cushions can be flipped to make sure the sleeping/seating surface stays comfortable over the course of your mother-in-law’s stay.  The sofa solution will definitely save you space by not having a sleeper mechanism that has to be pulled out. Have fun shopping!
