In previous versions of WordPress (prior to 2.9 if I remember right) there wasn’t in-built possibility to use post thumbnails. That’s why some themes (the best of them) used custom fields to hold a related image URI. Some of themes retrieved the first image from posts. Each theme had its own method to store/get the image and that’s why changing a theme was a quite time-taking process.

It seems now that was ages ago. Currently the most of the WordPress themes support in-built WordPress functionality of post thumbnails. But probably it’s not obvious how to set them because I receive questions of them every day.

Firstly,

What are the post thumbnails?

A post thumbnail is a small picture that displays near the post excerpt on pages like index page, category and other pages where a list of post appears.

How to set a thumbnail for a Post?

Generally there are 4 steps to do this:

Create a post

Upload an image to your blog

Set the image as featured image

Save the post

Create the post

Ok, it looks obvious and I will not describe the step :) Just note that you can use any of your old posts for that.

Upload an image to your blog

Now when you are on the add/edit post page there is the link “Set featured image” in the right sidebar. Just click the link:

You’ll be taken to the “Set featured image” window:

As you see the window is exactly the same as any other “Add Media” window. So you can upload an image there. Or you can use any of previously uploaded images from Media Library.

Set the image as featured image

After you’ve uploaded an image, click “Show”. At the very bottom of the image properties you’ll see the the link “Use as featured image”. Click it:

After you click the “Use as featured image” link, you’ll see that the featured image is set for the post:

Save the post

Nothing new here. Just save the post.

That’s all. The post thumbnail is set!

The Codestyling localization is the great plugin that helps theme and plugin translators greatly. This is really the best plugin ever for translators.

Unfortunately it has one very annoying bug on my web-server configuration – it cannot deal with quotas and “\n” sequence. The plugin adds additional slashes before the symbols.

I don’t know if this is something specific on my web-server or it happens everywhere (I tested two different servers), but it shouldn’t happen anyway. I’ve written to the author but will he fix it? Anyway I fixed the bugs.

Important: I don’t guarantee that this fix will work everywhere, it just works for me and if you have similar problems, you can try it.

So the fix is:
1. in codestyling-localization.php add to the beginning of csp_po_ajax_handle_save_catalog_entry function the line:

function csp_po_ajax_handle_save_catalog_entry() {
 $_POST['msgstr'] = stripslashes($_POST['msgstr']);// ADD THIS LINE

2.In class-translationfile.php change two functions:

function _convert_for_js($str) {
 //$search = array( '"\"', "\\", "\n", "\r", "\t", "\"");
 //$replace = array( '"\\\\"', '\\\\', '\\\\n', '\\\\r', '\\\\t', '\\\\\"');
 $search = array( '"\"', "\\", "\n", "\r", "\t", '"');
 $replace = array( '"\\\\"', '\\\\', '\\\\n', '\\\\r', '\\\\t', '\\' .'"');
 $str = str_replace( $search, $replace, $str );
 return $str;
}

function _convert_js_input($str) {
 //$search = array('\\\\\\\"', '\\\\\"','\\\\n', '\\\\t','\\0', "\\'", '\\\\'); //old
 //$replace = array('\"', '"', "\n", "\\t", "\0", "'", "\\");//old
 $search = array('\\"', '\\\\\"','\\\\n', '\\\\t','\\0', "\\'", '\\\\');
 $replace = array('"', '"', "\n", "\\t", "\0", "'", "\\");
 $str = str_replace( $search, $replace, $str );
 return $str;
}

This will fix slashes with quotes.

To fix slashes with “\n”:
3 .In class-translationfile.php to the end of function _clean_export add one line:

 $po = str_replace("$newline$quote$quote", '', $po);
 $po = str_replace('\\'.'\\'.'n', '\\'.'n', $po); // ADD THIS LINE
 return $po;

That’s all

When you design your own WordPress theme you probably use an option page with options that affect your theme appearance. If so, you need to create dynamic css for the theme and insert it into pages. There are several ways to do that but only one is the best. Firstly let’s enumerate them:

Insert entire css into <style> tag using wp_head call

Write dynamic CSS to a file, link to the file in the head.

Using template_redirect hook to create CSS output based on a special GET variable.

Style.php, which is linked to from the head, and outputs dynamic css.

They are listed in that order because they go from “best” to “worst”.
Some time ago I thought that the best way is the 3rd one but Otto (WordPress support forum moderator) has recently explained why is this order right.

Method 1 has the lowest server impact. When you make the call to get the page, it creates the page and outputs all the dynamic stuff in one shot. Some people find the CSS in the html to be aesthetically displeasing, but the fact of the matter is that this is the fastest, simplest, and best way to do it.

Method 2 has a problem in that you’re doing file writing from the theme. This is bad because you cannot guarantee that you have permissions to even write files. Assuming you try to write them to the uploads folder, then part of your theme is now outside the theme directory, which is confusing. Also, by including the CSS as a separate file, you’re creating another call to the server, which even Google Webmaster Tools will tell you is a thing to avoid.

Method 3 is the same as method 2, except now instead of writing the file, you make a call to http://example.com/?css=whatever and then your code intercepts that and produces the CSS on-the-fly, via whatever means, then exits. This avoids the file writing problem, but now it’s not only making an extra server call, but it’s also loading all of WordPress up again, which creates a higher server CPU impact.

Method 4 is the same as method 3, basically, except that you’re referencing some PHP file directly, which now has to:

a) find wp-load,
b) load WordPress,
c) produce the resulting CSS output. Worst of all cases: two calls to the server, WordPress loads twice, and you’re
now having to search around to figure out how to load WordPress again just so you can access the database.

So the best way to create dynamic CSS is…

The end statement here is to always use method 1. Okay, so you find CSS in the HTML header code to be unpleasant. My advice: get over it. Every other way of doing things not only requires an extra HTTP request to the server, but most of them also require a whole lot of extra PHP processing. Think about it this way: You’ve already got WordPress loaded up to generate the page. The most sensible thing to do is to go ahead and generate the dynamic part of the CSS right now as well. Just make that dynamic part as small as possible. Minify it into one-line if you want.

Note that WordPress itself uses method 1 for the custom background image and custom header image stuff. It does it this way because it’s the best way to do it.
