VC Alumni Hockey Game 2010

On May 8, 2010, the 3rd annual alumni hockey game was held at the Richmond Ice Centre. Twenty seven skaters and two brave goalies came out for the most successful hockey game turnout yet! The teams were put together by Desmond Chen ’91 and featured a great mix of young and old alumni spanning from Alan Fedyk ’80 to Ryan McConaghy ’09 and Kieran Nesset ’09. In all, 13 graduating classes were represented that night. The post game banter was lively as we all sat down in Stanley’s Bar and Grill for a little post game cheer.

Special thanks go out to Enzo Nardi ’96, the present hockey coach at VC, for bringing out the awesome purple and gold jerseys for all of us to wear and organising the two referees. Also, thanks to Jon Chiang ’99 for taking some really great photos of the event. The photos can be seen in his flickr stream at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonchiang/sets/72157624050694718/.

If you are interested in participating in future hockey games, either as an organizer, player, or fan, you can catch the most up-to-date information on our facebook page ‘VC Alumni Hockey Team’, or send an email to info@vcalumni.com and I will add your contact info to the hockey file.

Keep your sticks on the ice!

Emerald Achievements

VC Hall of Honour Induction Ceremony

18 April 2009

On this gala evening, guests were greeted by new VC Alumni Association President Tom Crean '74. Everyone had an opportunity to socialize in the foyer outside the new gym and high performance fitness centre. The crowd was abuzz and many spoke highly of the new additions to the old alma mater. As we entered the gym, we walked past the Hall of Honour and got a chance to review the existing members.

A fantastic crowd of more than 180 people attended - a wide cross section of the VC Community including teachers, VCL Board members such as Chairman Franco Trasolini, existing Hall members like Maury Mulhern and Kevin Konar, family, firends, and of course alumni.

The evening was MC's by Steve Dotto '76, who was the funny and engagin and kept the evening rolling along. After dinner, we got right down to business. Dan Kolesnik '57 gave a rousing speech in honour of Bob Ackles with a nod to the new facilities by pointing out that they used to play on a gravel field. A touching video tribute brought the crowd to their feet early as Kay Ackles accpeted the presentation.

Mike McIsaac '87 gane an impromptu introduction for Bob Corbett touching on Bob's loyalty to his players and dedication to his sport. Bob Corbett is currently the Dean of Academics at Collingwood School in West Vancouver. But for the decade of the '90s he was our head coach of the Varsity Basketball team. Bob spoke with pride of his time here at VC. While he was impressed with the new gym, he mentioned it didn't quite smell right. I guess it wasn't yet infused with the sweat of hard work and excitement of a close game.

Faculty member Ten Hon Choo introduced Sean Fleming and spoke of Sean's generosity in his willingness to reach out to a recent grad to provide guidance and encouragement. Sean is now an accountant with Price Waterhouse in Edmonton and does a lot of work with the Alberta Diabetes Foundation.

Turlough O'Hare was introduced by his sister, who was clearly proud of him, not just as an olympian, but also as an amazing brother, an outstanding doctor, and a devoted husband and father. In his acceptance speech, Turlough related that the genesis of his swimming career coul be traced back to the simple desire for an ice cream when his father challenged him to swim across the family pool.

Gord Penn, head coach of the track and field team, introduced Frank Smith. Frank has lived much of his life as a football coach. Frank spoke of his admission into VC. At that young age he was on his own but the Brothers recognized his skills on the grid iron and welcomed him open arms. Frank also fondly reminisced about the gravel football field, which prompted a cheer from Dan Kolesnik.

Kim Findlay presented Henry Van Driel. Professor Van Driel gave the most light-hearted acceptance speech of the evening referring to himself as the token nerd of the group. Despite the difference in fields of excellence, Henry's achievements are no less noteworthy. In fact, his cutting edge research could prve to have the most substantive impact on our daily lives, leading to vast improvements in computing and telecommunications.

And last but not least, we honoured the 1967 Basketball team, the last team to win a Provincial Championship. It was a special honour to have Bob De Julius, John Beaton, John Mills, Bob Beaupre, Rob and Richard Noble, and Dennis Kelly present to accept the induction. On behalf of the team, Bob De Julius spoke with pride of their accomplishment.

In the end each inductee touched on the same points - VC instilled in them strength of mind, body, and spirity that laid the foundation for them to pursue their goals. Their achievements set forth a wonderful example for the current student botdy to gain a deeper understanding of their own potential.

Thenk you to all the inducteed for their gracious acceptance of this honour. We would liek to thank our sponsors: Colin Campbell '90 and Anderw Peller Ltd. - wine and beer sponsor, Joseph MacKinnon '79 - table wine sponsor, Dave Mills '72, Hub International TOS, Michael Tam, Arbutus Florist, and Salmon Rentals.

And last, thank you to the organizers: Kim Findlay & Charlotte Koehler who put in super human efforts, Steve Eivemark '89, Bruce & Wendy Fougner, Tom Crean '74, Pete Fahrmann '90, and the VC Lettermen.

The next round of inductees will be selected in the fall of 2010 and inducted in the Hall in the Spring 2011. If you know of any alumni who has achieved excellence in their field, whether it's science, medicine, religion, politics, business, the Arts, or athletics, contact us for a nomination form and throw their name into the ring.

O'Hagan Field Construction Rushes Ahead

Fighting Irish athletes have long been a source of pride for Vancouver College, and combining that with strong academic and spiritual studies produces some of our finest citizens.

O'Hagan Field, the home of the Fighting Irish football program, has been synonymous with Vancouver College for over eighty years. This program has produced more professional athletes than most univeristies.

With the installation fo the new artificial turf, synthetic track and play area for elemtary students well under way, O'Hagan Field will become more that football field. Standing next to the new science centre, sports complex, and center for performing arts, it illustrates the focus of Vancouver College on the balanced development of the mind, body, and soul.

Winning teams are a source of pride for the school, but they are not the only reason we pay so much attention to sports. The physical part of developing the whole person involves testing one's limits and possibily discovering they're not limits after all.

Our athletic program continues to be second to none. Whether through participating in intramurals, interschool teams, or our high performance program, all Vancouver College athletes can find their place.

"We were able to take on a project of this magnitude due to our strong fiscal management, bridging of our loand, and faith in our Vancouver College community to support this necessary project - a project that completes our sports complex, positioning us to strengthen our athletic programs and development of the students. We now have students earning athletic scholarships for soccer and hockey as well," said Dave Hardy, Principal.

TIMING

The project target for completion is September has three phases. The first phase is the civil work, which is now almost complete. Installation of the artificial turf is scheduled for completion by the beginning of August. The last phase, installing the synthetic track, requires an asphalt sub base to be laid down first, which needs to be cured for three weeks before the synthetic track surface is applied.

OUR GOAL

Our goal is a sports complex that students and alumni can enjoy this fall. To date, more than $600,000 has been pledged towards our goal of $3 million. Alumni and parents have given their support in order for Vancouver College to be there for you. At this time, we ask you to leave a legacy for the students - both now and for the future.

HELP COMPLETE THE FACILITIES

Please give the gift of education by making a gift to Vancouver College Alumni Fund. Gifts can be made in the form of cash and pledges over three years or you may want to take advantage of tax savings by donating securities directly to VC thereby reducing your taxes on capital gains. No gift is too small or too large.

To learn more about these and other options to make a legacy gift, contact Kim Findlay at 604 261 3755 or email kfindlay@vc.bc.ca.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Brother Justin Newman. Brother died in his sleep on March 19th, the feast of St. Joseph’s, in the Brothers Residence. He had been suffering from a severe heart condition the last few months. Br. Newman was a much beloved teacher at Vancouver College, former head of the Religion Department, and Director of Campus Ministry. He is survived by his large extended family in Newfoundland. We join his family and the Community of Christian Brothers in grieving the loss of Brother Newman and we pray for the repose of his soul.

As soon as we know the family’s wishes regarding further arrangements, we will share that information with you.

Many have left their thoughts and prayers for Brother and his family on Brother Newman’s facebook site. If you wish to do so, please go to www.facebook.com, and set up your own account (which requires an email address and password. Then do a "group search" for "Praying for Brother Newman”.)

Through the intercession of Blessed Edmund, may our faith grow deeper and our love of life grow ever stronger.

Funeral Arrangements for Brother Newman

VCAA President, Tom Crean, was in the Vancouver Sun a few days ago. Below is an excerpt from the article.

Keep up the Good Work Tom!!!

Life Among The Dead

Tom Crean reluctantly agreed to join the family funeral business and found a calling

By Doug Ward, Vancouver Sun, 17 March 2009

The undertaker steps outside a Vancouver church and to catch his breath as a priest inside begins a funeral mass for a deceased elderly woman.

He'd already performed the list of duties that have become part of his family's DNA: Arranging for the body to be cleaned, dressed and placed in a closed casket. Playing traffic cop for mourners looking for parking and leading the procession of the bereaved to their seats.

Tom Crean can now relax for a few minutes before he transports the body to a cemetery. He stands by a black hearse that bears his grandfather's name -- KEARNEY -- and goes over the details of another funeral: his own.

Crean will be buried in a redwood casket inside a crypt.

"I've pre-arranged my service," said Crean, a barrel-chested 52-year-old with a cherubic glint.

"I like the above-ground approach, a tomb with a view."

His grandfather, Thomas Kearney, the patriarch of the century-old Kearney Funeral Services, rests in the crypt. So does Crean's uncle Frank and his mother Ellen, the siblings who kept the firm alive in the decades after the Second World War.

Crean hopes that his children and grandchildren will visit his final resting place at Gethsemane Catholic Cemetery in Surrey, and that eventually his remains will be moved to make room for theirs and for future generations.

Last night he made his NHL debut... on his birthday no less. Not only did he play a great game, but he SCORED A GOAL.

Here is an excerpt from the game recap.

DALLAS - In another crucial contest against a team in the middle of the Western Conference playoff race, the Dallas Stars passed their first test with center Brad Richards out of the lineup.

Rookie Fabian Brunnstrom snapped a 2-2 tie and right winger Raymond Sawada scored in his NHL debut to help lead the Stars to a 4-2 triumph over the Edmonton Oilers Thursday night at the American Airlines Center.

In their first outing without Brad Richards, following his broken wrist that will keep him out 6-8 weeks, the Stars got contributions throughout the lineup and won for the 10th time in their last 13 outings (10-3-0).

Congratulations Ray. Keep dominating.

For forty years a fixture in the Vancouver Sun's sports department, Archie McDonald is remembered for some of the most versatile, balanced, and eloquent sportswriting ever written in BC. A genuine honesty and sensitivity characterized his work, making him one of the most respected individuals in his profession. McDonald started in 1957 as an eager young reporter covering inter-city lacrosse and UBC sports before branching off into various local beats and international events including four Olympics and three Kentucky Derbys. Early on, working beside the likes of Jack Richards, Denny Boyd, and Dick Beddoes allowed him to learn and refine his craft until he, too, was considered one of the masters, perhaps the last of the great Canadian columnists who cut their teeth on horse racing. Horse racing remained particularly close to his heart and often resulted in his best work. In 1980, he was honourerd with a National Newspaper Award and later two Sovereign Awards for horse racing articles. In 1990, he was inducted into the BC Horse Racing Hall of Fame as a builder.

Steve Eivemark, the VCAA President, sent me the following email today. The VC Alumni Association is proud to announce our new President and Vice President set to takeover for Steve once he officially steps down.

Thanks Steve for the announcement.

Note: The top photo is Tom Crean '74 and the bottom photo is Greg Smyth '90.

Greetings, All!

With my impending departure and lots of discussions with several members of the VCAA board, I am very pleased to announce that Tom Crean ’74 will be assuming the president’s role beginning in February.

Over the past few years, we have built up a solid board of enthusiastic alumni and Tom is an excellent candidate to lead this group. His experience as a business owner and past Rotary Club President makes him an ideal leader and spokesperson for the VCAA. Tom’s son is in Grade 10.

In addition, I am pleased to announce that Greg Smyth ’90 will be assuming the role of Vice-President and will assist in the various management duties. This is a very exciting development as the VCAA board hasn’t had a VP for several years and it sets us up well for future succession planning. In the time that Greg has been on our board, I have been impressed with his initiative and the quality of input that he has brought to the table. Greg’s son is in Grade 8.

It has been an honour to serve in the VC Community and I will make sure to stay in touch.

Semper Fidelis

Steve Eivemark ’89

2009 is a Great Year for a Reunion

I hope everyone in the Vancouver College Community had a great Holiday Season. 2009 is going to be a great year and is sure to be filled with tons of events. Now that the holidays are over it is an excellent time to start thinking of planning a reunion for your graduate class.

The Alumni Association promotes and encourages reunions. It is up to the class itself to organize and execute their own reunions; however, the Alumni Association is willing to do anything we can to help get the reunion off the ground. We have a full class contact list with fairly up to date phone numbers, addresses, and email. We have helped facilitate many reunions and have a listing of VC Alumni owned and operated venues, success stories from previous events, and great ideas for future events.

Reunions are always tons of fun and once the ball gets rolling the event comes together very quickly. Reunions do not have to be for 10 years or 20 years, often they are for any increment. Some grad classes meet every year.

The VC Alumni Assocation has put together an Alumni Reunion Kit that will help you get started. I recommend taking a look at the kit and contact the Reunion Director, Tom Falizewski '74, at 604 612 5603.

As always, if you have any questions or are currently planning a reunion, please contact info@vcalumni.com.
