On May 5^th, 2012 marked the day for Tuesday Division’s, S13 Playoffs. This massive event took place at our self-proclaimed home: David Thompson Secondary. Num Num kept our tum tum full during the endeavor. As well as the first ever appearance of the Fruit Dealers. So with cilantro in their teeth and the will and determination to win, the ballet of Tuesday Playoffs began. No VDL Opening Ceremony is complete, without handing out awards to start the day on a positive vibe.

Best Dressed: Shark Attack

Best Cheer: Honey Badgers Don’t Care

Hootie the Spirit Owl of course is the most honorable award to win due to the fact you are judged by your peers and this award is determined over 10 weeks consecutively. I’m proud to say that 3 teams ended up in a 3-way tie and equally shared Hootie with a spirit score of an average of 9.93!!!

And the refreshing voice of none other than Mike Van Nen sang our Canadian national anthem and then kicked off Dodgeball of epic proportions.

On this day, teams lost, many epic and clutch catches were made; but most of all, winners were crowned and revenge was made.

As all VDL players know, Playoffs signifies that registration for VDL’s S14 is officially open for all current VDL players. On May 6^th, 2012 marked the day that some would never forget.  Proud mothers, fathers, daughters, sons and canines were there to witness the greatest event of the spring season, the Wednesday Division Playoffs. Before the grueling battles began, we had to honour some teams for their stupendous effort to stand out this season.

The games were kicked off by Tuesday’s Division Director, Mat Ho, singing the national anthem. He’s got the voice of an angel! After a long, grueling day, injuries were had, people were disappointed, yes, we ran out of ice packs, the best of the best were finally crowned.  The winning teams were proud and excited that they had a whole summer to brag about their Tier 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 championship!

Hello Dodgeballers one and all!

Sunday May 13th, played host to the VDL Thursday Division Playoffs! 48 teams entered David Thompson prepared for epic showdowns, mind blowing catches and game changing cross-court hits. Many would have to settle for the delicious offerings of Num Num and the Fruit Dealers but all would leave satisfied! But before we could get to the action, we had some awards to hand out to our teams!

O Canada was sung by Jay Vu of Sink or Swim! Then absolute carnage took hold! Players struggling and competing for the championship of their tier while onlookers gasped and were dazzled by the action in front of them. At the end of the day, six teams emerged victorious as everyone else applauded their efforts!

Important dates:
May 5 – May 29: Registration opens for returning teams. Teams can put down deposits of $50 to secure S14 spots and be eligible for Early Bird pricing.

July 3: Payment deadline for returning teams who have put down a deposit
July 4: Open registration to the public (Regular pricing): $550
July 31: Registration closes.

League Information:

·      Season 14 begins in September 2012 and runs through to December 2012*

·      Games take place at Vancouver School Board gyms across Vancouver

·      League fees include at least 12 weeks of play, including: 10 weeks of regular season; 1 exhibition week for vets and rookies, and 1 playoff weekend

·      Each session lasts 90 minutes (except Wednesday nights which last 120 minutes)**

·      Tiered play, based on skill level

·      Each team plays 3-4 different teams and 15-16 games per night, depending on division

·      Prizes for Best Dressed team, Most Spirited team, Best Cheer and all Tier Champions

·      Co-ed teams of 6-12 players; 2 females must be playing on the court at all times

·      All players must be 19 years and over (please see League Policies)

*Schedules may be subject to gym closures and will be finalized in August once registration closes.
**Please note, teams on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Nights can expect to play in both the 7:00pm slot and the 8:30pm slot throughout the season. A team’s game time slot and gym location will vary on any given week depending on their current tier and gym availability. We will make it as fair as possible, but cannot accommodate requests for one specific time slot and location throughout the season.

For teams with deposits: please clear the rest of your balanceby July 3, 2012; unpaid balances after this date will result in forfeiting your team’s deposit and reservation:
In order to qualify for a refund of your team registration fees, team withdrawals must be sent in writing to register@vdldodgeball.ca before the final registration deadline date, stating your League Night Division, team name, and reason for your withdrawal. Team fee refunds must be submitted to register@vdldodgeball.ca before July 31, 2012 or teams will be charged a late request penalty fee of $50, in addition to the processing fee. All refunds are subject to a $100 processing fee.

As you may be aware, there is a teacher’s strike/job action happening in BC at the moment. Please be assured that this does not affect our rentals at the gyms, and dodgeball will still run as scheduled. Custodial staff will continue to be on site. There are also no concerns of picket lines, as BCTF (BC Teacher’s Federation) members are prohibited from restricting access to school premises. Play on and see you on the courts!

Your VDL family

Enter the Vancouver Sun Run with your favourite dodgeball league! Join the VDL team on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 9am as we briefly put our balls down and run through the city of Vancouver (well, 10K of it). All players and levels are welcome! Participate as part of the VDL team and get to know your fellow dodgeballers, get a sweet Sun Run shirt with the VDL logo on it, and not least, have tons of fun!

The cost is $50 and the deadline to sign up is March 18.

Week 3 is PhotoWeek for all Division Nights! This is your team’s opportunity to come dressed up in your snazzy outfits along with those awesome props! Show us those killer smiles and supermodel poses, and, of course, strut your stuff for all of VDL!

Each team will be photographed twice; the first a regular and the second a silly/creative one. If you’re stuck for ideas, have a look through the VDL Gallery for some inspiration.
