High level switch alarms on LPG, LNG and other liquefied gases are notoriously difficult to implement and test, due to the very low specific gravity of the material and low conductivity. When combined with the volatility of the product care needs to be taken to find a reliable high level trip alarm. VEGA offer a guided wave radar device with SIL capability. As it is a continuous device, it is mounted down the vessel much lower than the trip point (or all the way to the bottom of the vessel if desired as a cross reference to an ATG) It also offers the option for dry calibration, and users can see the level approaching the trip point. The ‘prior warning’ of approaching high level, due to increased length of the measuring range down beyond the trip point, makes verification of operation is easier too. This also decreases the need to raise level of LPG or LNG above the trip point just to calibrate or verify the alarm. VEGA also offer a special SIL proof test routine which means validation/verification can take place without the need to raise the level to the alarm point, increasing safety for users. Temperature from -200 to +450 degrees and 400 Bar are offered by this product range.

Reservoir water levels across the country are being carefully watched, measured and monitored, even in the depth of winter. Scarce rainfall has meant that many areas in the UK are announcing drought orders and conditions before summer has even begun. Its particularly important with the growing season ahead of us in spring, where ground water is drawn on by every plant and crop. A new, more reliable water level sensor, a device to assist in the water level measurement of any reservior, lake, open water, estuary, river or stream. Is is non contact and low voltage, offering flexibility on power, too. The VEGAPULS WL61 water radar has a range up to 15m, its fully waterproof and microwave energy safe to use in the open, unlike ultrasonic sensors its not affected by weather or surface conditions and unlike many hydrostaic pressure devices it doesn’t require recalibration. VEGA are involved in many leading edge science projects, from wave height, ballast and draft monitoring on deep ocean Oil rigs and FPSO’s, to high in the sky, with CERTEC ceramic pressure sensors for tank level measurement onboard the new Airbus A380. However, on this occasion, we can only look in awe at this project for satellite transport, which launches the name ‘Vega’ into the final frontier! Nothing to do with us I’m afraid, but watch this ‘space’ – you never know!!

This is a question often asked by customers, What is bulk solids level, and how can I measure it properly and get the best accuracy that suits my needs? There are many considerations for this kind of level measurement, including;

Do you want a continuous bulk level indication, measurement or just a bulk solids point level switch?
What accuracy would you like – are you interested in ‘how many tons’ or general level indication to say, the nearest 5%?
What is the behaviour of the product – dusty, adhesive, angle of repose, granule size, abrasive, process temperatures and pressure?
The width and height of the storage container – generally speaking, the wider the area, the less accuracy you will achieve, unless you do a multi point measurement and do an average
Where the fill and empty points are - these will affect the surface profile and may have a bearing on the technology you use if there are high levels of airborne dust

New route for Nucleonic Radiometric Gamma Source disposal

If you have a Nucleonic or Radiometric gamma radiation based measurement system for level density or interface control, VEGA is committed to supporting total life cycle management of your ownership. We now offer a responsible method of source re-use as an alternative to stockpiling and burial of radioactive sources. Most sources that are disposed from industry still remain under the title of the user, no matter where it ends up being stored or stockpiled.

Of course, assuming you are going to keep your measurment system, we would always first reccomend that you look at your detector technology, as sometimes latest generation more sensitive detectors can often extend the life of an existing source, with no disposal needed.

However, if disposal is needed, VEGA now offer the ReSource Program, via an exclusive brokerage agreement with a major nucleonic source supply and handling company. This means that when the source reaches the end of its useful ‘half- life’, VEGA can take ownership and then has the source recertified and registered for reuse. A special over-encapsulation process plays an important role in this re-certification, resulting in a “new” re-born source, without requiring the utilisation of new materials. Any liability associated with stockpiling and burial are eliminated for the customer and the source is ready for use in a new application.

Pressure measurement: Why versatility is critical to get the best performance and value. Its not all about Differential Pressure transmitters and retro fitting chemical seals, when you are seeking the best performance to suit your application, environment and budget.

On many typical pressure measurement applications, DP is a traditional solution, offering great accuracy and it is widely available. But, on hydrostatic level applications for example, where a flush diaphragm is a common need, the diaphragms tend to be large to accommodate the low pressure ranges and they involve using an oil filled chemical seal. Radar Level Measurement on Coal Bunkers, Hoppers & Silos

Radars have been successfully applied and working on coal bunker, coal silo and coal hopper level measurement and indication for many years in power, mining and coal transportation applications just look at this site story from back in 2005! They measure level reliably, with coal dust in the air, build up, even during filling! And, when dust levels are really heavy, they can have an integrated air purge system for cleaning the sensor. Multiple units can be installed if the surface area is large, to provide surface profiling and more accurate level, useful especially when there can be multiple discharge points.
