Fewer Children in Church?

Hmmm. Seems to be a problem. Some small churches (less than 50 active members) did not hold an Easter egg hunt this year.

Because, they say, there are too few (if any) young people in church.

So, what's happened? What does it mean for the future church? Are the parents at church? If so - how does the kid get to stay home in bed?

It also seems that parental authority has taken a hit. Well, it really started many years ago when parents would allow their children to do whatever they'd like - once at church. They could sit quietly in a pew for a couple hours while playing a video game. Or, rather than insightful study, they could be convinced to join a dance team.

The overall verdict? Kids got bored.

Years ago, children's musical and sports activities were held on Sunday afternoons. Then, they mysteriously crept into the hours before 12 noon. Sometimes, the parents would quietly slip out. Now - they may not come on that day at all.

More often than not, the teammates and coaches come from very diversified backgrounds. Including the non-religious.

While their parent(s) could identify with an adult-themed program, kids couldn't. Children's church got shaky, as adults continued their reluctance to really let kids be themselves in an environment that screams for change.

And teens found little to connect themselves with first graders.

Around 2001, the First Freewill Baptist Church (2018 Trawick Road, Raleigh) would drive a yellow bus around to pick up children for Sunday School. Apparently, the kids were fed a snack and stayed through the morning service before heading home.

At least, it occupied the kids for a little while during the weekend.

That church has since exploded with growth - from everywhere. I haven't seen a bus in my Longview community for years. Perhaps they're picking up somewhere else.

Those children have grown up. Who knows where they are.

But, it appears that many are NOT in church. Coincidentally, the number of young people mentally (and physically) dropping out of school or getting into trouble has increased.

The mantra? Wake County Public Schools isn't doing enough.

Oh, really?

Wake (NC) School Kids En route to Jail

Either the media is too afraid to report, or they really don't know, but we have some really bad children in Wake County Public Schools.

The incident I was told of yesterday was recounted by a parent.

Her son, academically on track and a sports star, was about to be attacked. Why? Because some kids started a rumor (lie) that almost got out of control. Had he not heard of it from one of his sisters, he wouldn't have known.

The lie was that he was having sex with a girlfriend of another guy.

So, after school, a group of boys waited for him to leave school. When he saw them approaching, he started running. They followed, but he easily outran them. With his cell phone, he called his father (who works weekends). When the father caught up with all of them, he asked the boys what their problem was. The language they used with him was startling. When he explained that they are just 'kids' and incapable of talking of someone being a 'wife' and other adult communication, they left.

Later, the sister was threatened by a girl at the same school. When the mother talked to the principal, she learned that the girl had already been expelled. Turns out, she had physically (and viciously) assaulted another girl at the school.

Why such anger by our youth? I don't know. I don't know if they've watched too much television, personally witnessed such violence or been victims themselves.

All I know is that we have bad kids in our Wake County Public School system. No shock to parents whose children have been victimized.

And there seems to be little that we can do. Certain "Justice" reports try to blame children's problems on the school system's policies on suspension, expulsion and dropouts. When 'certain' parents complain, the operative word becomes 'racism'.

But when both the victims and the aggressors are both black - what do we call it? Well, nothing. Because it doesn't make the news.

Yes, there are problems in every home in America. The question is - how are they dealt with? Should children be removed from a home? If so, where will they go? Will they be safe anywhere OR will they continue to present problems?

Should we visit the idea of boarding schools? Or will some well meaning, 'activist' organization argue about 'rights', without ever considering the victims?

By the way: the kids in this account live in a fairly affluent town. Not in Southeast Raleigh.

Southeast Raleigh's Real Enemy

Finally, the blinders have been removed.

The real enemy to the black residents of Southeast Raleigh ain't the hateful Republicans. It's the hateful Democrats.

Finally, proof. Those of us who have been purported as 'racists' and hatemongers and have long fought for real self empowerment can claim momentary relief as the community notes that the real enemy of the unfortunate are the 'fortunate'.

Mismanagement (not misfortune) has doomed one of the oldest organizations in Raleigh, North Carolina. The victims include the unceremoniously dumped, unpaid employees and community participants who have come to rely on the programs of the Raleigh YWCA.

Investigative reporters have known for a long time that certain people in Raleigh get kid glove treatment. What they remain mystified about is WHY the so-called 'black leadership' is too chicken to speak up on behalf of the 'community'.

Well, Southeast Raleigh, y'all been duped.

The latest indignity was verbalized by board member (former Chair) Maria Spaulding, live on News 14 blaming the EMPLOYEES for not being smart enough to see that the organization was hemorrhaging money.

According to News 14: “You had to be non-existent to have known if you were inside the Y that there was a problem,” she said.

Interesting. Does that mean that money that should have paid employee salaries was diverted for a ceremony to 'honor' the head of 'Great' Schools of Wake County, Yevonne Brannon? You know: the person smart enough to sidestep getting arrested while innocent youth (who didn't know any better), allowed themselves to earn a new criminal record and a dose of community service?

The one who didn't lose one moment of time from HER cushy job? The one who befriended NAACP head (what's his name) and managed to turn blacks against their own self interest when it came to school reassignment and long bus rides?

Leadership of the Raleigh YWCA (whoever they are today), purportedly met with deep pockets on Thursday, looking for money. That's about as comical as any of us going to our financial institution, with no money in the bank, and asking for an interest free loan.

Step 1 is obvious. The national YWCA, in whatever way possible, must dump the current leadership.

But my goodness, do NOT replace them with people who already have a history of failure!

Raleigh YWCA Debuts Classism

I've been puzzled for a week as to why the News and Observer and WRAL News has offered such an anemic view of the unexpected closing of the Raleigh YWCA.

We can only assume that the laid off staff–whose earning power is less than middle class-just aren’t worth the risk of upsetting the "community leaders" on the Board.

Fortunately, ABC TV 11 and NBC 17 stepped up their coverage. So has Time Warner Cable News 14. And - good Lord - the Independent Weekly. Late Monday night (3/5) , WRAL TV cut and pasted a picture of the Y building and attempted to ‘tell’ of Monday night’s meeting at the Martin Street Church that they apparently didn't attend.

When I have to pay homage to Bob Geary and The Independent, then, yes, the local news media have truly not measured the impact on the Raleigh community. Each has, in its own right, managed to secure a piece of the puzzle. But NO ONE seems to have the full story.

For an organization that one would assume prides itself on transparency, not ONE Board member has spoken on camera. The Board has changed. The Secretary and Treasurer are both gone. The Chair has apparently stepped down but seems to remain a member.

Also, missing is any acknowledgement from the so-called NC Justice Center, the State Auditor and the Employment Security Commission.

Could it be because all of these folks are Democrats?

Classic classism. But finally, their voices are being heard.

But why is it that only The Independent has written of the one item that soothes and heals the fastest?

Money.

We can sit, opine and meet, greet and eat for days and weeks, but WHO is willing to minimize the suffering brought on by missing paychecks?

According to Bob Geary of the Independent Weekly, “Bishop M.S. Nesbitt of Deliverance Cathedral of Love got a big round of applause when she spoke toward the end of the meeting and promised that her church will write checks to each of the 14 displaced workers for $1,000 each.”

By the way, Deliverance Cathedral, long a true proponent of Christian love, is located in one of the poorest sections of Raleigh.

Why do boards matter? Who gets to serve? Which boards pay members to serve?

It’s the stuff that dealing is made of. Who's ‘in’ vs. who's kept 'out'. Who decides on paychecks. Who decides on hiring. Who gets to sell property. Each director, who usually serve on other boards, get first crack at things that the rest of the public doesn't.

Of the bills that have been paid, we can only hope – and pray – that the unemployment insurance was, and that the employee benefit package isn’t too limiting.

But – who knows? When a board refuses to meet with staff, yet, finds the time and will to meet with NON-staff, like clergy and 'certain' news reporters, then its another slap in the face.

According to Wikipedia: "Classism is prejudice or discrimination on the basis of social class. It includes individual attitudes and behaviors, systems of policies and practices that are set up to benefit the upper classes at the expense of the lower classes. It can also include attitudes and behavior of prejudice and discrimination by members of the lower class to members of the higher class".

Other than the Executive Director, no Board member has suffered a loss of income, so they really can't comprehend the terror of those who have.

Newt and Black Kids

Oh Newt! No matter how good the heart there is one thing that will help you in this campaign for President: Get a black 'street' advisor to help frame your message!

I don't believe Newt Gingrich is a racist. Among the current lineup of Republican presidential candidates, I'd say he knows our language well. He just needs help in how to say it.

Newt Gingrich was NOT suggesting that black kids can ONLY get jobs as janitors and give free labor to the schools. Neither was he suggesting that they take the jobs from current employees. Let me rephrase what I think he was trying to say.

He sees the value of children having role models and equating a good education with greater employment opportunities. Rather than examples, he could have emphasized the need for a return to apprenticeships, internships and trainee positions - all that the BLACK community can immediately offer.

Because what many of our children lack the most is attention. Period. Especially from adults.

Flourishing in most of 'our' communities are churches, barbershops, hair salons, funeral homes, daycare, and an occasional bank. Not far away is a community college or HBCU (historically black colleges and universities).

While he said 'janitor' jobs, its because those don't require great skills as entry level. There is lesser liability, than assisting in a chemistry or computer lab (though those can be considered with proper supervision).

Yes - there are some homes where a parent is underemployed or unemployed. And, there are vast numbers exploring the job market daily. So - Newt needs someone who can help him speak "street" and those with bank accounts. Herman Cain can't - because Herman Cain does not seem to have a comfortable respect for those who are underprivileged.

When I read the lineup of North Carolinians supporting his campaign, I smiled. Come election time, there are a few 'stoogies' who will walk Newt into a black church. A few pastors will welcome him. The Republican pastors will invite him to speak as long as he wants.

The audience will politely clap. They've heard the rhetoric for years from Democrats but, well, that's different.

Still, Newt will be thrilled. He knows the black community much better than any of the other candidates. He knows how wishy-washy his black Congressional colleagues handled 'business'. Complaining - with their hands held out.

Newt's not perfect. No man is. Newt's a moderate. He can get along with anyone. He's not running for Bishop. He's running for President of the United States. His biggest problem is having to say what conservatives WANT to hear. At least for the time being.

But if Newt could dance to a tune from James Brown, we'd see the real stuff that he's made of!

It's Official! Republicans Are Split!

Now that the South Carolina Republican primary has ended, NBC News notes that both Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum "failed to appeal to conservative, lower-income, and evangelical Christian voters in the state".

In fact, I sense that the mostly verbal war between conservative Republicans and moderates has slightly subsided. The often phrased RINO (Republicans in Name Only) may soon evolve to CINO - Christians in Name Only.

Because nothing of the past few weeks of this contentious primary would make Jesus smile.

On one hand are the few who believe that big name wealthy Christian pastors can speak on behalf of the majority of Baptists, other Protestants, Catholics and (oh yes) Mormons. The newest low was when James Dobson singlehandedly blamed Callista Gingrich as the sole arbiter of the 8 year adulterous affair she allegedly had while Newt was married to Marianne Gingrich (wife 2 of 3).

Yet, the timing of Marianne Gingrich's nationwide television appearances seemed awfully suspect. Did she 'out' her ex-husband on her own or was she paid to do so? Much like the former lover of presidential candidate Herman Cain (what's her name? The one who can't find a job)?

Those who preferred cheeky third place finisher Rick Santorum (because they couldn't influence any others) were able to keep him in the race. It appears that Christian conservatives (while propagating their own negative verbiage) couldn't compete with the corporate dollars.

Despite being faithful to his wife and family, Mitt Romney couldn't win South Carolina - the southern bastion of family values. His successful business ventures were considered more suspect than Gingrich's weird voyeurism. Did Romney campaign less negatively or was it assumed that Gingrich could actually get on his knees before God?

Hardly. It's just easier to blame the millions of dollars spent by uncontrolled PACs.

One big unasked question is: what happens if Ron Paul drops out of the race? Will his huge legion of Independents and Republicans be split as well?

Nasty, dirty, uncivil politics at its best. And we have 47 states to go?

Tears (and Joy) for Christmas

The Christmas gift that I cannot give to my nieces and nephews (and great nieces and nephews) are the grandparents they never met. John Arthur Peyton, Sr. (1973) and Lillian Peyton (1972).

Arthritic knees would never have prevented them from holding their grandchildren. They would be smiling. Giving in to (almost) everything they want. Because, a grandparent's love can't be measured.

It's with immense pride when a parent can see the family tree expanding. Things they warned their kids about now become better understood and passed down. And memories that fade alongwith the realization that time waits for no one.

There was always room at our table. Dinner was 95% homemade (except cranberry sauce). Only in the 70s do I recall my mother breaking habit by baking refrigerated dinner rolls.

There were the visits. My father left out early to check on local senior citizens. They too received the paper bag of an apple, orange, walnuts, and coconut and hard candies. We children were absorbed in the gifts of clothes and (usually) one or two toys. By late afternoon we had managed to visit others and, somehow, others were dropping by to see us.

Neighbors, church friends and other associates ruled the day. There was the eggnog that we children could have 'just' a sip of. Only later did I learn how adults encouraged extra tastiness in theirs.

People didn't murder their families - at least not in our world. There were occasional divorces, yet children were never bargaining tools. The few kids who had special needs, just got an extra dose of love and attention. There was no focus on our differences.

Now our world is caught up into 'who's right' vs. 'who's wrong'. There seems to be little (if any) room for compromise. If people are poor, it's their fault. If they're rich, well, they must have stolen it.

All of us can (and should) create our own Christmas traditions. Me? I'll just try to be more available. I'll continue to help those who God places in my path. No - all of us can't pay off the lay-away items at Kmart. But there is something special we can do - and should do - throughout the year.

This Christmas (and the coming New Year) I'll try to do better by giving what 100% seem to prefer.

Time.

Are You Prepared?

Tis the season to be scammed, robbed and relieved of your earthly belongings. It's for the 'cause'.

Be-cause, somebody wants it.

If you're not sure if you're prepared, start right now. You'll need a flatbed scanner and/or printer and your wallet. Because if your wallet is stolen and you need to cancel your credit card number(s), then you'll not want to waste precious time by looking for an old bill.

The longer it takes, the more likely that a thief can purchase the highest priced electronics that your credit limit can buy. Yes, some costs can be reversed. But if you truly have time to waste, you wouldn't want to spend it testing your memory.

Copy your driver's license, vehicle registration, debit card(s), credit card(s), social security card, voter ID - everything. Don't forget to copy the backside. Remember: your credit and debit cards have a 3 digit code that reinforces that the holder is who they 'say' they are.

Copy at least one check (unless you've memorized the routing and account numbers from each financial institution). Copy any form of identification that can be used to 'pretend' that he or she is you. Remember the compartment that holds the secret security code that you can't remember? Well, it's not so secret when your wallet is stolen.

Next - your home furnishings.

Remember that tornado that hit us here in Raleigh (NC) and Wake County in April? Or your friend's house that was engulfed with flames? Have you seen the homes flooded in the Northeast and across the country?

Well, imagine you're the one sitting with an insurance adjuster. The adjuster works FOR the insurance company and wants to restore you as whole as possible (after the deductible). To an adjuster, a dining room table with 6 chairs could be a card table from a thrift store.

This is when a picture is worth MORE than a thousand words.

Despite how messy your house is, NOW is all the time you have. Use your digital camera (or buy a disposable) to photograph everything in each room. Now, you can prove the Duncan Phyfe furniture that has passed down through your family. The big screen TVs. That overpriced reclining sectional sofa.

Video inside of your dresser drawers to show the plenteous supply of lingerie. The closet full of shoes. The gold jewelry and family heirlooms.

Make this a family project. Let your kids help. One can video the downstairs while the other does the upstairs and you can compare after dinner.

Once you've discussed their accomplishments and changes needed, you should step outside to video your vehicles (WITH the license plates, make and model), bicycles and go-carts.

Tis the season, when people are desperate to pay their electric and heating bills. And yes, a few Christmas gifts. But you needn't be the one with the 'gift' that keeps on giving. I mean - GOSH! Dudes are stealing WHOLE ATM machines!

Now that I have your attention, remember that other people in your family have sensitive information also. This is also a good time to write a letter to all 3 credit bureaus, FREEZING your child's (or parent's) credit report. After all, they each have a social security number, which is used to identify them at the doctor's office, health department and school.

Now I'm really going to creep you out.

If/when you lose a parent, there will be countless people coming into his or her home. Again, let your children help.

While you're making arrangements, let a trusted teenager copy down the name of each prescription and count the pills. Mom have a gun? Find and store where you can supervise. Write down everything that you do with a witness.

Try to be the first there to videotape or photograph everything. Caring relatives CAN also be addicts or thieves. Neighbors and friends dropping by to offer condolences? Capture their movements. And (if possible) include audio.

Have a safety deposit box? This is where a print copy (or disk) should go. It's less costly to have a fireproof, metal cabinet at home for storage.

By the way: did you copy your passport? Is there anyone you can trust with a full set of keys? Do you have ready access to your parent's keys?

If Santa really is coming, then make him come down the chimney - and not through an unlocked door.

No, Mr. Cain

I have refrained from writing about Mr. Herman Cain and his 'quest' for the White House. In fact, I was stunned when a Wake Forest couple told me that they supported him, and longed to ask, "Why"?

I take government, politics and public service very seriously. Despite my 25+ years of study and involvement, I want the person in the White House to know more about government than me. The importance of the three branches. That there are other countries in the world who don't enjoy the same fortunes as us.

That there is hard work and huge decisions that can't wait for a TV camera.

I watched the women who claimed sexual harassment and the recent 13 year "friendship" with the sister in Atlanta. With most, I noted one common element: they were in need. Need of a job, money, or both.

And men like Herman Cain - who boast big salaries without having to do much - get their jollies off of weak women. Women in need. And, who probably, would do almost anything for it.

Remember Dominque Strauss-Kahn and the allegation of his forcing oral sex and attempting to rape the hotel maid in New York? Recently he said, "Nothing would have happened if I hadn't had this consensual, but stupid, relationship with Nafissatou Diallo,' referring to the 32-year old Guinean who claimed to have been attacked."

He easily admits having an uninhibited sex life, but, WHY force sex from a hotel MAID?

Same with Mr. Cain, and other men who thrive off of women who don't mentally challenge them. Who are too afraid to say, "No" or "No thanks".

So who has the black eye now? The men? The women, coming forward, perhaps, to repair their shattered inner souls?

Mr. Cain further shames us by attempting to hide behind his wife's skirt. He claims it will be up to her as to whether or not he remains in the Republican primary race. Really? If he were up against a foreign dictator, would he then say, "Um, wait. Let me ask my wife".

Come to think of it, Anne Sinclair, third wife of Strauss-Kahn, had to bail HIM out and take him back to France.

This won't work for Herman Cain. Sure, he's ashamed that he's been caught. What matters now is not his remaining in the race. What matters is:

Will his wife settle for 50% of their amazed fortune? Or, will she go for more?

For President of the United States

Never has there been such a ho hum description of those chafing to be President of the United States. Since the best, most articulate, most believable, won't run, the citizens are left with 2nd and 3rd best.

Who would be the best?

Obviously, someone with government, domestic and foreign affairs knowledge. Someone who could keep their word, or, at least not get caught lying. Someone whose family would be supportive, and who would recognize that it will take votes from all over to count.

At least, who would be determined by the Electoral College (some don't realize that).

Again, who would be best?

Compared to the current group traipsing the country, well, almost anyone. But then, who doesn't come with baggage or extra scrutiny?

I won't say Colin Powell, former Secretary of State (and former head of the Joint Chief of Staffs), because, though he appears credible, some don't trust him. He'd make an attractive President and would return the US to having a someone who had actually served in the armed forces, to the highest position in the world.

Supposedly, he won't run because his wife doesn't want him to. Besides: who needs the headache?

Same with former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. She knows first hand now about the back door politics. Of what high priced donors expect. What party officials demand. How little time one can devote to just having a personal life.

Even current 'front runner' Newt Gingrich took a break from politics to do exactly what Powell and Rice are doing now: trading knowledge for high priced speaking engagements.

So, no matter how many debates are occurring across the country for Republican Presidential hopefuls, the jury is still out. Their polls numbers aren't pathetic because of the largeness of the group.

Their poll numbers are pathetic because fewer people are answering the phone.

Wake (NC) Schools: The Raw Taste of Crow

I know why I lost my election to the Wake County School Board.

I took some voters for granted. In some areas, exuded too much confidence. Or arrogance. Depended too much on those who really wanted a change to come to the polls on their own. Certainly missteps were many and answers to questions proved inadequate.

I can point a finger at others, but clearly the fault lies with me, the candidate. For instance:

1. I failed to make the case that a change in school reassignment won't lead to high poverty schools. I still believe it won't, because children closer to home (with more parent involvement) may display a new respect for learning. My opponent even started agreeing with my 3 year old position on school choice!

2. I neglected to question more of my opponent's decisions. For instance, moving the school board and administration to Dillard Drive in Cary. Wake County Schools owns the $12 million building that was vacated in North Raleigh yet, my opponent voted with the majority to a multi-million dollar annual lease.

3. I wasn't visible enough. For self employed people like me who juggle many professional and community responsibilities, there will never be enough time. Limited fundraising equals limited exposure. Campaigning has taken on a different urgency than in years past.

With the new Democratic majority, however, I say "give them time". A few are so egocentric and aggressive that they'll soon turn on each other. So, maybe there will be a change again in two years. Or, in four years when these particular district seats are once again available.

Sadly, it's beginning to look like its "almost all of Wake County" vs. Raleigh.

For my other colleagues, however, I'm saddened by the vindictive, dirty tricks used to sully their reputation. School Board Chairman Ron Margiotta is a good man. He is neither a racist nor uneducated. His 40 year success as a businessman in New Jersey would have been impossible had he not worked with people from all walks of life.

People, like he and many of my relatives, who are graduates of the School of Hard Knocks.

For first time candidate Heather Losurdo - how much worse could it have gotten? Heather is a good mother and wife. When we met nearly two years ago, she told me about a traumatizing event with a Wake County public school. So yes, I understood her desire to serve.

I received emails about my opponent that questioned his character. But I chose not to use them because I wasn't going to waste time checking the authenticity and the information had nothing to do with serving in the position.

So, the campaign has ended. But the thirst for justice for all Wake County children (particularly low income) will never end.

NC Needs New Election Laws

I've been scratching my head lately over one of the weirdest election laws in North Carolina.

And we have plenty.

Recently, Stokesdale Town Council member James Attaway (Guilford Co., NC) died. His name is on the ballot for re-election. So what happens, since he died before election day?

His position on the ballot remains as though he's living. If he's re-elected (obviously in absentia), then someone is appointed by the City Council to replace him. There are 3 open seats and 6 other candidates running. Two of the 6 are also incumbents.

Does this make sense? Is it fair that the other challengers don't benefit from campaigning?

Town population? 3200.

Stranger still, is Franklin County and its hop seating position of Sheriff.

Sheriff Pat Green resigned around January 30, 2011, citing "major health and personal matters". Upon further investigation, he admits to converting around $200,000 for personal use. (Us old timers call it stealing). He has been indicted by a grand jury, and is home waiting for trial.

Deputy Sheriff Elliott Pinnell, earlier named as interim sheriff resigned to take a job elsewhere. The politically charged Franklin County Board of Commissioners named former Sheriff Jerry Jones back. Earlier in the year, the Board had refused to hold a special election so that the citizens of Franklin County could choose their own new Sheriff.

And the voters? Oh, well. They've been once again relegated to being second class citizens. By their elected officials.

I Lose. Nothing Changes.

Shortly, an area newspaper will run a story on the number of times I've run for public office. When asked, I could remember around 6 times. In retrospect, it's probably closer to 9.

Yet with each winning opponent - few things in my community have changed.

When residents see the transformation of West Raleigh and downtown over the past 20, they are impressed. In downtown, however, the change ends at Person Street. Walk two blocks over from a parade on Salisbury Street and you'll see a line of people waiting for a meal at the Salvation Army. (On weekdays, the soup kitchen from Good Shepherd Church lunch line forms on W. Morgan near McDowell Street).

Travel North on Person Street to New Bern (Post Office and Federal Courthouse) and you'll see all the information that 5 census takers needn't have been paid for. Though a gateway to the City, this stretch of New Bern includes several rooming houses. (Residents seem to be always gathered on the front porch).

The centerpiece of the area (at the intersection with Tarboro Rd. (which becomes Rock Quarry Road a few blocks south) is a 24 hour Bojangles - the location of several 911 calls and the semi-customer useful Division of Motor Vehicles (you can't renew a license there).

Two blocks east on New Bern is a closed auto repair shop. My client's offer to purchase was turned down several months ago. Now, after gutting the building of all the useful equipment (including car lifts), the Seller asked to revisit our bid.

Which isn't likely since it would now cost my client triple to replace the equipment.

Further east on New Bern, are a collection of thrift stores, pawn shops, check cashing places, gas stations, seafood take out and (naturally) an ABC store. From the even numbered addresses in the 1902-1944 block (between the intersection of Raleigh Blvd and King Charles Rd) are nearly 7 acres of one story (low income) duplexes owned by the Joyner family (now named Joyner Properties Duplex Village). Monthly rents are from $500 - $700 (a neighbor says Hispanics are charged more).

Near the Clarendon Crescent Road entrance of the infamous Enloe High School is the Longview Shopping Center. The former main anchors were a Winn Dixie grocery store (closed in 2005), a Kerr Drug and a nearby Ace Hardware (now Sherills cosmetology school). The main tenants now are a Family Dollar and a hair salon. Community Cab (which asked me years ago for help finding another location) has moved near the Helping Hand Mission off Rock Quarry Rd.

And they asked why I run for office.

Further east a few blocks away is WakeMed Hospital - a source of continuous activity. It's a wonder that persons in rehab can concentrate with jackhammers on one side and emergency helicopters just dozens of feet away. WakeMed has been scooping up property for years.

At the next intersection with Milburnie Road is Club Envy (formerly Black Tie and formerly Swains Steak House) - now for sale or lease. It was the scene of a couple of murders and other criminal activity for the few years that it was in business.

Cross the I-440 intersection with New Bern (64 Highway) at the Tower Shopping Center is the newly closed Roh Buffet and Grill. Years back it was a Shoney's Restaurant. Adjacent to Roh's is a formerly closed bank. Closer to New Bern and Trawick was a Hardee's and another closed bank (First Union). Hardee's is now a Popeyes and a nearby Dunkin Donuts, movie theater and Pizza Hut are all gone.

At that same intersection is New Bern Subs and a Waffle House. Their 24 hour open availability once contributed to many 911 calls.

The next major intersection with New Bern is Corporation Parkway. The strip mall behind the Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo) once housed a Harris Teeter (twice), Roses and the Red Palace Chinese Restaurant. All have closed. It now includes a few smaller businesses.

The next intersection is at New Hope Road. Both the Walgreens and CVS stores at this location are open 24 hours, (whereas the two across from WakeMed are not).

A Walmart - 2 steps away - continues to be a magnet for 911 calls for service - despite purposely being built outside the I-440 Beltline.

Yes, City of Raleigh staffers held a few meetings to discuss how to rehab this section of East Raleigh. At the second meeting I asked about funding and if property owners would have to pay any share for sidewalks and other improvements. The answer was - oh well there isn't any money.

Yet, despite having NO money, they envision running a train down the center of New Bern Avenue.

It's why I'm so disappointed with the makeup of the Raleigh City Council. Our residents should be able to count on four votes (Mayor, 2 at-large, District C). It takes 5 votes for any significant change - which makes any power with a District C representative fairly minimal.

Change we're unlikely to see - for the next 2 years.

While my NC House 33 opponent and (then Lt. Governor) Perdue gave us a lottery we didn't ask for, at least they didn't promise us much.

Matter of fact - neither did my latest opponent.

Do You Have Tomorrow?

At least four families are grieving today. One for a young mother who was murdered while dining with friends at a Durham IHOP. Two others were parents to the four Hispanic children who were killed as a result of the April 16 tornado. And Baby Girl Meekins, born on Sunday October 9, died on the day of her birth.

All unexpected, premature deaths.

Today is all we have. Another day of choice. Today is when we can choose to share our resources with others, or choose to be selfish.

We can choose to seek truth or choose to be manipulated. We can dare to ask tough questions, or say its, 'not my problem'. If so inclined, we can continue to accept fanciful answers that make liars wonder if we've bumped our head or were simply born dense.

Tomorrow, Lord willing, a good friend is undergoing colon surgery. Her husband of more than 54 years will be with her. So will I. They are best friends and have faced down more struggles than any of us could imagine.

But for now, all we three have is today.

If by chance today is your (or my) last, I hope you'll have experienced the freedom that I have.

And that you'll leave your mark in this world as more than just 'Present'.

Is This What Raleigh Voters Deserve?

In 2009, the Democratic Party controlled Wake County School Board appointed Keith Sutton as the representative for District 4. This despite 3 retired principals being among those of us willing to serve.

Now the seat is open. Parents and other voters must answer this: Does this picture (which ran nationwide) imitate the behavior we deserve in a mature, policy maker? For 4 years?

Ever wondered whose hand that is restraining Mr. Sutton?

Obviously not one of the Raleigh Police officers. It is a school board administration staffer who quickly informed Mr. Sutton that he should sit. Because - had he been arrested, he could have LOST his seat on the board!

As a reminder, I believe in:

*School choice for parents,

*Increasing parent respect and involvement, and

*That we should set high expectations for all children!

The former diversity policy was a sham and hasn't led to a higher graduation rate. Former school administrators (whose exorbitant contracts were not been renewed by new Superintendent Tony Tata) measured school mileage using Mapquest. They didn't figure the total bus ride nor distance, because it would have damaged the results they sought. It's easy to say a bus ride is 20 minutes from a child's home, however, buses also stop and pick up others along the way.

The children in our district have been used as pawns to fulfill a mandate that they didn't choose. Some poor children have been bused for up to 2 hours - EACH WAY! The only equality (or choice) have been for those who had 'friends' inside of the school system.

Not one child of an elected official has ever been bused in such a manner!

We especially need taxpayers who do not have children currently in school to vote your conscience. Without the right leadership on the board, you may find an increased number of students dropping out, because the same failed policies could return. These young people will likely join the ranks of the unemployed.

Election Day is Tuesday, October 11.

Hey Job? Bum a Cigarette?

Unless you're new to the world, you've read (or heard) the biblical story of the Prophet Job (long vowel o). God asked Satan what he thought of Job. Satan suggested that Job was righteous only because God had put a wall of safety around him and blessed him with prosperity. Satan went on to say that if all of Job's possessions were taken, he'd have a much different character.

Job was tested. His possessions were taken - sheep burned up by fire. 3000 camel stolen and all his children killed. Despite the loss and pain, Job still clung to the belief that God was still to be honored.

Satan next caused serious physical pain to Job's body. He was egged on by his wife to 'curse God and die', to which Job answers, "You speak foolish".

Three friends came by to console him, likely saying, "Hey home boy! What the heck did you do to make God so mad"? Still, Job hung on. After a period of time, God restored Job's health and doubled the property he'd earlier had.

There are days like now that I want to bum a cigarette from Job. Just the exchange would be surreal. How extraordinary it would be to stand next to someone else with an unshakable belief.

How strange to find my friends unable (or unwilling) to take a stand with me. Even strangers shake their head in disbelief.

But stand I must. I firmly believe that the children of East and Southeast Raleigh (and Knightdale) deserve a voice. Better yet, the voices of their parents must be included in the mix. Major decisions in our educational system are made with very little input from them.

It's not that they don't care. Their voices are less audible because of the loud shouting of others who see things quite differently. I pledge to listen harder for these voices. Those who mean well (I'm sure) continue to dominate the stage. They insinuate that they know what's best for these children and their parents.

It's a strange, but serene setting. I'm not intimidated. I'm hopeful. I'm watchful.

I'm neither big headed nor pig headed. I just want their rights acknowledged. The sooner they understand the changes and the role they need to play, the better.

For their sake, we must get back to the basics. Back to when their child excitedly repeated their ABCs and recited numbers before entering First Grade. When they'd beg to be read to. When they'd try to read on their own.

My 17 month old grand nephew is trying to imitate his parents and the grandmother who has watched him since birth. He's trying to read because he sees them read. It's that excitement for learning that must be nurtured through high school. Education is the foundation upon which our collective future lies.

Reflecting on the past 10 years alone, I'm no saint. I've done the best I can under the most trying of circumstances. Still, I've tried to do right by anyone I've encountered.

No - God's not mad at me. At least, I don't think so. But even if I carry this burden all by myself, I owe it to my grand nephew and his (possible) future siblings, to try.

What Do Black Party Activists Fear?

The tenor of black voters in the Wake County Public School Board election has been interesting. Most have been responsive during the 'semi' debates, but silent as a group. Why?

Fear.

Despite their attempts at being acceptable as candidates and/or appointees, most young Democrats (under 60 years old) have found themselves discarded. Ignored. They watch miserably as Dr. William Barber, head of the NC NAACP gets celebrity treatment as their 'leader', when nothing could be further from the truth.

As a whole, they distrust the political machinery in both major parties. A couple have minimal relationships with sitting Republican board members. The relationships aren't as cozy as they proclaim to their friends, because I'm constantly called for unpublished email addresses and cell phone numbers. They won't visibly support me for fear of blacklash. They won't visibly support my opponent because of fear of 'whiplash'. In other words, constantly looking up for help, and knowing its never coming.

In fact, nothing could be more detrimental than returning Keith Sutton for a full four years of non-adventure. Superintendent Tony Tata will continue being treated like a rock star and more inspiring than Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson and the deceased Reverend Ike - all rolled into one. Tata brings, promise, charisma and most of all: guts. (Watching Tata in the pulpit of a black church might make one think that he and Barber graduated from the same divinity school!)

The challenge of young black candidates is easily noted.

When former House Representative Bernard Allen died, he was replaced by (now Senator) Dan Blue - who had held the seat before. When former Senator Vernon Malone died, he was replaced by (now Senator) Dan Blue. (No - this is not a typo).

When Rosa Gill ascended to the House Seat (formerly held by Blue), she held off Allen's son, Bernard Allen, Jr. When he ran for the seat, he was sounded defeated - by the Democratic Party machine.

When Harold Webb resigned from the Wake County Board of Commissioners due to a major health challenge, he was replaced by City Council District C member (and buddy), James West. West was replaced by his buddy (and neighbor), Eugene Weeks.

Now - there are 5 (including Weeks and fellow Republican Paul Terrell ) seeking the District C seat. The three younger black candidates didn't know how difficult campaigning would be. Certainly they expected a greater reception than they've gotten, but - they face what I do. Fear of being seen with the wrong person who may not win.

In search of honor, Raleigh builder Danny Coleman attended a fundraiser for Ron Margiotta for about 30 minutes. He later sent out a letter to his email list, personally endorsing one of two Republican mayoral candidates and throwing awkward approval at my opponent for School Board, Democrat Keith Sutton.

Gotta cover all the bases. Or - at least pretend to.

Tired of Being UNDER the Bus?

If the current Wake County NC school board race has taught me anything, its that there remains a population of frustrated, tired and powerless people. Party affiliation demands that they remain loyal, even when they aren't thrilled with the candidate.

It's a mess nationwide that really began with the President.

Friends are important in politics. Okay. But is friendship the ONLY reason why President Barack Obama hired Arne Duncan, head of Chicago's troubled school system as US Secretary of Education? Now Race to the Top is being compared with No Child Left Behind as politicians run for cover against ideas that just haven't worked.

Philadelphia school power broker meddling has been uncovered. It has led to a nearly million dollar payout to overthrown superintendent, Arlene Ackerman. What happens? Philadelphia City Council says, "oh well. It's always been like that".

Meddling had already happened in Washington DC in 2010.

Some determined that former mayor Adrian Fenty wasn't black enough. With a goal of school reform, he had hired Korean born Michelle Rhee as school chancellor. An unhappy teacher's union who didn't like 'change' help to oust him after only one four year term. The winner, current mayor Vincent Gray, has been under fire every since, because of ethically challenged appointees.

The only way to move forward is to admit that failed policies need to be shelved. Our future workforce will only be educated and successful if we give every single child a chance. The powerless know that.

But fear keeps them trapped.

What I Can't Tell My Friend

My family knows that I've been taking a good friend to chemo every 3 weeks so that she can beat breast cancer. But there's one thing I can't tell her.

When leaving a few weeks ago, I saw a gentleman who I've known for over 20 years. He greeted me as kindly as always. When I turned towards my car, he helped a lady into a wheelchair to enter the Raleigh cancer treatment facility. Another person walked up to assist.

This morning, I read the obituary of his wife's death.

So, no. I can't tell this to my friend. Right now, she's on quite a positive track and is as hopeful as her doctors who demand monthly visits.

I admire the courage of all who take on the cancer beast. When we sit for 4 or more hours for her treatment, she becomes a beacon of light for the rest of the clients. Unashamedly, she tries on wigs in the presence of them and a mirror. Volunteers flock to offer a snack or advice on fashioning a scarf to keep her head warm. Often, they share their personal stories with us.

No, I can't tell her. Not right now. Her journey is hers to walk. Alone.

In Raleigh, a Handshake Denied

You gotta give it to the Wake County Democratic Party leadership. They sure showed America what hope and change for the future looks like.

And it ain't with the unemployed.

Unwittingly, the President of the United States agreed with his re-election handlers. In a visit to North Carolina on September 14, 2011, he opted for his head instead of his heart. As a community organizer, he must have wondered, "Where are the jobless"?

For the Democratic Party leadership, the poor, uninsured, unemployed and homeless (on whom the speech was based) don't make a compelling backdrop. And the smart ones depend on prayer more than giving up job search time by traveling across town to NC State.

And, poof! A last minute staging of a few black faces in case a camera lens could only get half a head shot of the commander-in-chief.

Can you imagine how inspiring it would have been if he had spent a few minutes meeting the thousands of those over 50 who can't find a job? Or meeting staff and students at Shaw University or St. Augustine's College?

Oh, that's right. Shaw has money problems and a leadership crisis. St. Aug? Oh well, they always need money too. Besides: why should the employed fake caring about the unemployed?

I mean, like - really. Who cares?

Who Put Politics in Wake Public Schools?

The 2011 School Board race is shaping up to be a choice between two types of candidates: those for children and those for power.

I wonder: when did Wake County school superintendents become involved in political maneuvering?

Recalling virtually no publicized disagreements between the NC Association of Educators (teachers' union) and the Wake County School Board before 2009, its apparent that they worked together harmoniously despite student failure.

Last year many of us were surprised during the 2010 Wake County Commissioner race. Candidate Jack Nichols (Wake Democratic Party chair) landed a late 'endorsement' from 3 former school board superintendents. These three (Del Burns, Bill McNeal and Bob Bridges) formed Educators for Nichols. (All three had been internally hired by former boards).

(One would think that with 'diversity' being a strong issue that they would have included then Commissioner Lindy Brown (black and female, but they didn't).

And history writes that both Nichols and Lindy lost.

As a Republican candidate who has long advocated for more family participation and ending long distance busing, I now find myself being bombarded with last minute 'forums', chiefly sponsored by longtime associated Democratic groups.

So with low student achievement and high dropouts for the past decade, is it fair to say that the Democratic leadership is responsible?

Capt. Sully Drives a School Bus

No, not the Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger who successfully navigated US Airways Flight 1549 to safety on the Hudson River in 2009. I mean the brave and courageous Wake County Public School bus drivers who transport thousands of our children daily.

They are our real heroes. I can't do what they do.

Only God knows how early they rise each day. School transportation records show when they arrive. How they prepare the bus for service. The many schedules they follow (did you know that most drop off at multiple schools)?

They deal with mouthy children. They must look straight ahead to obey hundreds of traffic laws and use the eyes in the back of their head to keep order. They must react quickly for eager children who dart out before the bus completely stops. They must deal with angry parents when the bus is 5 minutes or more late.

They must remember much and write down more.

They must appear charming, alert, awake and not be dumbfounded by some of the crazy questions they are asked. They must feel for the children who board soaking wet or cold because the weather person didn't 'clearly' say it would rain. Or because they don't own a coat.

They must compassionately, but firmly, deal with tired, frightened, hungry and sometimes angry children. Children who a decade ago would have appeared 5' tall now tower well over 6'2" and weigh more than a Mac truck. Massive muscles.

They deal with tight skirts, overexposed bodies and can't say a word.

I don't think you'll be breaking any rules if I suggest this:

Write a kind card or note of appreciation to a school bus driver.

Put it in an envelope.

Enclose money. Green money. No checks, please.

It's a gift, but can never be nearly enough. But it will go a long way.

You'd never know it, but the person in front of you in a grocery check-out line, using a food stamps debit card, may have safely delivered a child to school that today.

Jobs? Government is the Problem

Dear Mr. President,

I believe you mean well. Unfortunately, your newest jobs strategy won't likely help my community. Why?

Because of divided government. In other words, those in power 'divide' the spoils between themselves. You included.

The latest high ranking jobs in your administration seem to have gone to insiders one day after their 'retirement'. Isn't that a little disingenuous?

Traditional sanctuaries for federal community development block grant funds (CDBG) are alive and well. The nonprofits with connections with their local government pals know that they will be regular beneficiaries. They serve on each other's board. They barely complete paperwork to get funding.

Jobs? You gotta be kidding. We're either overqualified or unqualified - depending on who's interviewed in front of a camera that day.

We too appreciate partnerships, however, today's partners have one thing in common: greed. So us smart North Carolinians know that our two options are: 1) Continuing on that hope and change mantra (hoping, praying or BEGGING for a handout, or 2) creating our own jobs, for our own people, on our own terms.

Remember that 'stimulus' money that was sent to North Carolina? I'm sure there's an accounting of it somewhere, however, most of us didn't see it. The only 'shovel ready' was shoveling, digging and piling 'it' higher and higher.

In other words: bullsh_t.

Displaced North Carolinians know that you personally neither gave nor took away our jobs. It was those other greed barons who did that. I wish I could get excited about your upcoming visit, however, unless you have a job in your pocket, we're pretty much talked out. We understand how easy it is for you and Congress to discuss job possibilities because, unlike my community, you aren't standing in an unemployment line, attempting to look hopeful rather than hungry.

So, when you come, please alter your script. Include a plan that offers real hope to us real Americans who are NOT the recipients of unemployment compensation or welfare. Our folks want to work.

But as long as you and our infamous Governor continue doing job handouts within your administrations, well, we'll keep filing out applications. Hoping for 'change we can believe in'.

Raleigh's Generation Gap

When I talk to parents in Wake County School Board District 4 (primarily East and Southeast Raleigh), the difference in school selection can be narrowed down to generation.

The 60s crowd feels differently than today's young family. They recall the handed down text books, the difficulty of being treated as 'less than' and that their two-parent household offered safety, security and tough love.

Church every Sunday. No excuses allowed. No cursing, fussing, fighting. Respect was the headliner with every adult they encountered.

They always found employment. They worked hard (before and after school), graduated, found gainful employment and have now retired. Some manage their own rental properties and own a timeshare.

The younger generation is struggling. They find themselves maligned by the older generation who simply says, "He (she) won't work. All they do is look at TV all day and run the streets."

And therein lies the biggest problem. Communication. One day in front of a television doesn't prove that this person hasn't sat for hours in front of a computer screen at the Employment Security Commission. Doesn't tell the story of standing in line for hours at a job fair.

The older generation may miss the fear, pain and uncertainty of today's family because it could be hidden behind a protective mask of indifference. For some, using alcohol or drugs may temporarily block out their worries. And, yes, prostitution or selling drugs may pay the light bill.

As with all of America, today's biggest worry is about how to pay the bills. How to eat every day, sleep in doors and put on a happy face for their children.

Finding work was less problematic just a few years ago. Now, job searches have virtually come to a dead end and for many, desperation has set in. Their family support system has broken down because they too are in need. Their church family may have grown oblivious. Or likely - are struggling too.

Little surprise then, that today's parents are mostly choosing proximity over diversity with regards to their child's education.

The older crowd recalls walking, catching a ride or riding the bus to get to school. Today, busing children far away into the suburbs causes a huge transportation problem for those without a vehicle. A 40 mile cab ride to pick up a sick child is an unimaginable expense that few can afford.

While invisible to most, job hunting remains a major component of their lives. With or without a job, they want the security of knowing that their child is safe at home (or with a neighbor) if school lets out early.

A comfort that the elders once took for granted.

Proximity satisfies both convenience and peace of mind. Today's parent has to deal with many influences that compete for their child's attention.

Like gang members who offer a seductive lifestyle that can ruin a young life and destroy an entire family.

Today's generation is different. They don't need to be talked at or talked about. They need to be talked to, heard and listened to.

And respected - for still holding on.

In Raleigh, a Kick in the Gut

By letting him stay, he thought he had avoided foreclosure. When he said that the 'lender' told him that Ocwen would handle everything, I had to start searching for answers.

Nothing in the various public records matched what he had been told. Not the 'lender' who told him to keep making payments. Ocwen returned my call but didn't fully acknowledge their role. When he asked me if he should restart paying the mortgage like the 'lender' said, I told him to get it in writing.

Since then, he's gotten very quiet.

For some, a foreclosure notice is simply a piece of paper - on someone else's door. For him, it's very personal. Recalling the thousands put into repairing and updating, it was hard to imagine that his (now estranged) wife stopped paying the mortgage without telling him.

For buyers, the real estate market is hot with unimaginable bargains, especially in East and Southeast Raleigh. For sellers (like banks), its considered a financial loss of their assets.
