Lately I found some great YouTube videos of ventriloquist, singer and songwriter, Gary Willner.

Gary Willner has performed as a singer and ventriloquist all over the world and has appeared on national television many times. Famous impresario John Hammond once said of Gary’s voice, “Gary has one of the best sets of pipes I’ve ever heard!” In the 1970s Gary and his brother had a writer’s contract with Chappell Music Publishing Company, writing songs for other artists. Gary continues to sing and write songs and his album “Is it Sinatra?” is available now. Gary is in the process of recording an album of all original songs and will be available soon!

Gary has opened as a ventriloquist for stars such as Don Rickles, Robert Klein, Joel Grey, Debbie Reynolds, and Alan King, to mention a few. Gary has appeared on many national television shows such as The Tonight Show, The Statler Brothers Show, The Charles Grodin Show, Into the Night Starring Rick Dees, Robert Klein Time. Gary is presently working in comedy clubs and doing personal appearances.

Check out this video of Gary using his Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra figures.

(Click here if you have trouble viewing the video)

As you can see, Gary is an amazing talent. You have to check out his other videos where he really shows off his singing talents.

As an extra bit of information, the master ventriloquist figure builder, Ray Guyll, built Gary’s Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra as well as some of his other figures.

Gary’s new album of 14 Sinatra classics is available now. Gary sings these Sinatra standards in the style that made “old blue eyes” a legend.

Hey Dan,

Glad you are on the downhill side of the problem. It is not just for old folks though. I had it in seventh grade. I have found that eating everything in sight cures the lack of fiber. Of course that brings on other things like diabetes. . . Live and learn.

Every time you look at the control stick of a puppet. . . you should have known that you were already suffering from. . .

“Diverse – Stick – U – Like – Us” . This is a rare but not uncommon disease found primarily in Vent Figure Collectors. Not only do you have the disease, but you are also a carrier. Maybe you should be quarantined???

Steve at the Dummy Shoppe

I guess I do have this “Ventriloquist Figure Collector Disease”.

Since I have been collecting this question has come up a number of times and this is, does a ventriloquist figure lose value with a replacement body.

As everyone knows I am a purist when it comes to my ventriloquist figures and that is because I dealt in general antiques for so many years. The purist wants everything to be original. The more original the better. I just can’t stress that statement enough but you really must apply this to context in which it is involved.

If you only collect ventriloquist figures, and do not perform, then the originality is most important. I want my figures to have all original parts. Correct head with the body built by the same maker and the hands also from the same maker. That is the collector talking. ORIGINAL!!!

If you perform then this is not going to make a difference. So if you have a head from one figure and a body from another who is going to know except YOU. The effect is the same for sure. You have a complete figure sitting on your knee or stand, His mouth moves and the banter between the figure and performer takes place. Makes absolutely no difference who the body .or the head was made by.

Now when you retire after 100 years of performing and the family finds your pal in the trunk in the attic they heirs decide to sell. Here is where things change. If the figure is all original point for point it could be worth mega money but if it has all different parts put together, then that is exactly what you have PARTS. I know there are some that just don’t see it this way but believe me it is true. I can say so because of my years as an antique dealer and now as a true ventriloquist figure collector. Try if you can to keep yours original but if not hey who cares about your heirs!! LOL

One of my dearest friends lives in Las Vegas and last week he called to let me know that his is getting married. He met a Chinese girl by way of a waitress friend of his in Las Vegas and began an online relationship with this woman. He then went to China and met her there and they decided to wed. It took them over a year to get all the paper work done to bring her over to the US and she arrived and a wedding is taking place tomorrow.

It was perfect reason for Helen and me to take a trip to get away from the bad weather in Boston!! I love Las Vegas and plan to one day retire here so when my friend said come we made the booking and here I am in Vegas.

It is Nascar Weekend here so the place is all a buzz. Hopefully I will get to see Terry Fator and tonight I am going to see Kenny Wayne Sheppard, one of the best blues slide guitarists ever. I can’t wait. I also hope to see Jersey Boys.

After all is said and done I unfortunately have to admit that I am no longer young. Boy does that upset me because for all intents and purposes I still believe I am 20. I do all the same things I did at that age and inside I still feel that age but the reality of this past week has set into place in my mind. Diverticulitis only happens when the walls of the lower intestine weaken and pockets (diverticuli) appear. You just don’t find them in young folk.

I was on a clear liquid diet for two full days and then for two days on a BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast) and have now just started to eat solid foods. Along with this I must take 2 different antibiotics for 10 full days which kill anything that lives in the lower bowel. They leave a metallic taste in the mouth and actually give me a nauseous feeling but I am not sick. Also I now must take Citricel to make sure I have enough fiber. I will admit I have never been one who enjoys salads. That I know was a big mistake.

So with a new regime in eating I hopefully will not have another episode. I can say it was not fun.

Back to collecting ventriloquist figures!!

In most of the performing arts posters were used and plastered all over a town preceding the appearance of the performer. Many of these posters were called broadsides and mentioned the names of all the performers that would be in a show and give little bits of information about the acts.

Many of the more famous performers would use full posters with pictures of themselves and even pictures of the act. This was very common with magicians and many of these posters were very colorful and today have become exceedingly collectible and rare.

The posters were done in half sheet, full sheet, three sheet and even giant 16 sheet billboard size. There were quite a few companies that did these posters and these posters were in actuality lithographs. A lithograph is done by a process of each color being run at separate pressing of the image until the final full colored poster is achieved.

One of the companies that created these lithographs was the Donaldson Lithograph Co. of Kentucky. They produced many great posters and one of them happened to be a Ventriloquist’s poster. It was called a stock poster because the image was always the same but the performer could have his name added across the top. Any ventriloquist could order this poster and use them to paper a town before he arrived.

I am happy today to show you one of these posters that is a part of the Ventriloquist Central Collection. I hope you enjoy seeing this lithograph.

Bob Abdou sent in this great little article about the manipulation of your ventriloquist figure. These are tips he learned from the great ventriloquist, Johnny Main.

Dummy Position

There seems to be a new wave of ventriloquists that are going back to using actually “dummies” in their collection or shows. There was a period in the 90’s where soft puppets were all the norm, now it seems the table is turning. When an audience sees a ventriloquist dummy on stage, it automatically makes the audience think “ventriloquist”, that is not the same with a soft puppet, even though the entertainer is a ventriloquist.

So since more ventriloquists are using ‘dummies’ either buying them or making their new partners themselves. I feel it is important that I share with you my tips from Johnny Main. Johnny only used ‘dummies’ in his routine over soft puppets. In fact, he won a soft puppet in the raffle from the Ventriloquist ConVENTion and he did not know the first thing about working it. Johnny was out of his element with soft puppets but a master when it came to ventriloquist dummies.

Here is one tip he shared with me that I now want to share with Ventriloquist Central readers; Dummy Position.

It is crucial to know the position of your dummy BEFORE walking on stage. Johnny was more concerned with table top position over using your knee propped up on a chair. If your position is uneven, the act makes the audience off balance and most of your routine is lost.

Step 1 – Know your table top position BEFORE walking on stage, if it is not right, fix it immediately then go right into your routine, if you fight the table top position all during your routine you have wasted yours and your audiences time. On lookers will think of you as an amateur, not knowing what to do during a crisis. So fix your table top immediately.

Step 2 – If your dummy position is even with your eyes, you now have an even partnership which is NOT what you want. Your partner is everything you are not. If the audience from the back row sees your act and your dummy is positioned even with your eyesight photo #1, they will see 2 actors on even scale, look at Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy, Martin & Lewis, Sonny & Cher, all different in height, length and looks. This is what makes your jokes funnier.

Photo #1

Step 3 – photo #2, if your dummy is positioned lower than your eye level you will lose some of your manipulation. Also it will put an unwanted strain on your forearm, arm, elbow and fingers. Most dummies are not created in looking straight up and that is what has to happen when your dummy is positioned too low, It also looks too awkward, if you find your table top to be too low, fix it immediately.

Photo #2

Step 4 – Johnny was very stubborn on dummy position and he always said to have the ventriloquist’s eyes to be level with the dummies top head, that is photo #3. There are many positive moves to be shown to your audience when this position is done right, This is the position you need to have when you work on stage. Yes, there are many vents that will disagree, but the majority of them are pros and have performed 10,000 shows, so they know what feels right to them. This lesson is being shown to those just getting started. Once you have years of experience and knowledge under your belt, you will see changes that will fit your personality and show. So again, if you are just starting out, make your eyes level with the dummies top head.

Photo #3

Step 5 – Again, look at photo #3, this is the right position AND the dummy looks like he is looking at me, but he is not, I am actually looking at his left eye, not his right eye. Why is this important when your dummy is looking at you?? Because it saves a manipulation that is sure to get a laugh. Again, if you want your dummy to look at you, don’t make a profile photo, have the dummies head turn a bit toward you and just look at his left eye,

Step 6 – Why is Step 5 important?? Because there is going to be a joke in your routine that you need to use your silver bullet manipulation. If you have seen Jeff Dunham use his super hero dummy, there is a joke where the super hero actually turns his head all the way to look at Jeff and because this dummy has a big nose, the audience now sees this funny nose and gets a HUGE laugh, The dummy is now looking at Jeff with both eyes, This is the manipulation you want to use very wisely in your act. If you make the dummies head totally look at you at the beginning of your act, you have just wasted a good manipulation that you can do later and continue the laughter. You have to establish your dummy to the audience and once that is done, then shoot your silver bullet!!

When I give lessons on ventriloquism, I don’t talk about lip control until later, I work on stage presence, that is crucial in a show, if you have PERFECT lip control but the audience sees you struggle in getting your dummy out of the suitcase, you have lost a beat to your rhythm and you have to work harder in getting that beat to be in sync with the rest of your show.

So when you work on stage presence, remember Johnny Main’s advise about Dummy position and your act will make you look like a real pro.

Peace,

I don’t normally talk about personal happenings but I suffered a scare early Wednesday morning. I woke up to severe lower abdominal pain at 4:30 am. I thought it was gas and shrugged it off and went back to sleep. I awoke again at 7:00 am but the pain was still there in my lower left abdomen. Knowing that my appendix is on the right side I still felt it must be either gas or constipation.

I went through the day with work as regular but the pain worsened and by 2:30 pm I called the doctor’s office and they immediately said for me to come in for an examination. Helen of course was upset that I was in pain but held my hand and went with me. I calmed her down and said it would be nothing.

I had to sit for 2 hours before I got seen but the doctor did the exam and said that since there are no other organs on the lower left side of the abdomen it had to be something in the colon. I then had to have blood drawn and it was checked for white count. A high white blood cell count means there is an infection. Bingo mine was high. The doctor said she believed I have what is called Diverticulitis, a condition where small areas of muscle weakness in the wall of the colon progress to pouches. Sometimes small particles of waste lodge in the pouches and become infected.

I was put on 2 antibiotics which I have to take for 10 days and the doctor told me these antibiotics kill anything that lives in the lower part of the colon. Well it must work because today the pain has already subsided. I also had a cat scan done and those results will come to me early next week. Hopefully nothing else will be found. I am happy I caught this early and used the signal (pain) which means something is wrong. Hopefully after the antibiotics are done I won’t have to suffer with this again.

This is the reason that you must have roughage in your diet. Now back to Ventriloquism and figure collecting!!

It seems to a few that my piece I wrote on the blog about figure makers has stirred the pot quite a bit and therefore did garner some good comments (Click here to see the blog). My intention with this blog was to be informative and let everyone know that at this present time it is not an easy task to find a pro figure maker that will deliver a figure in a very timely fashion. Of course for this to take place the figure maker must be a full time maker to be able to fill orders with relative speed. If you are a builder but have a regular job then it just takes much more time to deliver.

Now you say what is relative speed? Let me say that for the maker you have many steps that take place; create a head either by carving ( takes much time ) or casting, fabricate the head stick, make the mouth palate, install eyes ( some make their own eyes and this takes more time ), install mechanics and the time factor grows with the amount of mechanics, paint the head, wig the head, build the body, make fabric arms and legs, attach hands ( carved wood takes much more time ) paint hands and finally dress the figure. I must admit that the process is long and time consuming and as I originally stated there are very few who you can go to now to purchase a figure fromthat does all these steps as a full time job.

I have to say in my initial blog I said that Albert Alfaro disappears and then reappears before ConVENTion and then is at ConVENTion with a full table. This caused him to receive a few emails from some folks so I hope that I caused him to get a few orders. He is still available for anyone who wants to contact him for a figure. I say this because he contacted me and told me so. I am sorry Albert I just have not heard much about your figures in the public eye .

I have had some comments covering the fact that there are makers out there that are building on their own and I will agree that is a true statement but the blog I wrote was about full time figure builders and where are they. We all can contact Braylu and purchase everything we need to assemble a conversion figure but I was not talking about that at all. I think Braylu is a wonderful site for all of us to get parts and even completed figures from and I myself have used Buzz from Braylu to get items for some of my figures in the Ventriloquist Central Collection. A great place for all of us in ventriloquism.

I hope I have explained myself and everyone understands my thoughts which still remain the same I feel it is difficult today to purchase a Professional ventriloquist figure from a Professional builder. There are very few and they take a lot of time.
