The skin on your head may have very different issues from your hair, for example be oily while your hair is dry. While a healthy scalp is a prerequisite to healthy hair, it may need very different things from your hair.<div><br /></div><div>When you switch from using harsh shampoos to gentler ones, with gentler surfactants or without surfactants altogether, you might need to give your scalp a bit of extra exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation is gentler yet more thorough in the long run.</div></div></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Who should use chemical exfoliation? </b></div><div><br /></div><div>Everyone who wants to cleanse their scalp thoroughly, but also people with dandruff as physical scrubs can cause microtears and worsen the issue. Exfoliating the scalp also lifts hair at the roots and keeps it fresher longer, and can prevent itching.</div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>Chances are you are already using a product with chemical exfoliation
and don't know it. </b>Some shampoos contain enzymes, AHAs or BHA (see list of exfoliating ingredients below).</div><div><br /></div><div><div><b>Look for these common exfoliating ingredients:</b></div><div><br /></div><div>Basic
pH: baking soda, cleansing soap (such as Savon De Marseille) -- not
really recommended for the scalp, as it can disrupt the skin's pH level.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Urea 10-30%</div><div><br /></div><div>Enzymes: bromelaine. (2-8%), papaine (5%)</div><div><br /></div><div>Beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid): 1-5%, preferably in oil and not alcohol </div><div><br /></div><div>Alpha Hydroxy Acids: lactic acid, glicolic cid, mandaleic acid, malic acid, all in the concentration of 3-10%, lactobionic 2-8%</div><div><br /></div><div>LHA lipohydroxic acid 0,3%-1%</div><div> </div></div><div><br /></div><div>Scalp exfoliating products are practically unknown in many countries. I picked up the one from Only Bio on a trip to Poland. But if you don't have access to ready made products, you can use products meant for the face. Try toners or serums or even face cleansing products, as creams can be too rich and clog pores. Always start with a low concentration of the active ingredient, as our scalp usually hasn't had much exposure to such ingredients.</div><div>Another easy way to DIY scalp exfoliant is by mixing urea. Start with 5-10%. </div><div> <br /></div><div>Apply on the scalp and leave on for 10-15 minutes. </div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-family: "dawning of a new day", cursive;"><span style="font-size: 48px;">Zeta</span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Image: Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@nordwood?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditCopyText">NordWood Themes</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/bIugCleCY84?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditCopyText">Unsplash</a>

When Grey Hair Gets Wiry And Unmangeable<p style="text-align: center;"> <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgUs0ypfmK6VtxBNsbBgOh2TqI7FichiuIWqFw07EObO3dGX0EtRp5NbBw0tYxjh5hxvMQs41DFkeKrHWLQLzW4aWw7WN9nm3CDeStTQ59ZYtiXywdsij-TT9tDBak8pRYFs4djVOBZNuXrwof2keOfNccf_TQSiFUnHjPR8loZ_DZlGW_LId7yt_SvEA=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgUs0ypfmK6VtxBNsbBgOh2TqI7FichiuIWqFw07EObO3dGX0EtRp5NbBw0tYxjh5hxvMQs41DFkeKrHWLQLzW4aWw7WN9nm3CDeStTQ59ZYtiXywdsij-TT9tDBak8pRYFs4djVOBZNuXrwof2keOfNccf_TQSiFUnHjPR8loZ_DZlGW_LId7yt_SvEA=s320" width="70%" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>Here is a chance to learn from my mistakes. It literally took me a couple of years to learn to take care of my greying hair. Maybe I missed all the advice because I've gone grey much earlier than my peers. It kind of sneaks up on you -- at first all you have to do is decide between dyeing or not. But when grey hair hits critical mass, you might start wondering why it's acting out and not responding to whatever worked before.<br /></p><p>My high porosity hair was always very happy with a lot of proteins: protein-rich conditioners, <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2012/01/beer-hair-rinse.html">beer rinses</a>, yoghurt masks. With time it wanted less of those things, I thought it was because the <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2011/03/what-is-your-hairs-porousity.html">porosity</a> decreased as the damaged sections grew out. But as recently my favourite high-protein Kallos masque made my hair really unmanageable, I realised that it can't just be porosity. My hair never was and never will be low porosity even when super healthy, it has a lot of texture and curls.<br /></p><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, I was annoyed. After some research I found out that <b>grey hair doesn't do well with protein.</b></div><div><br /></div><div>Grey hair is hollow on the inside, and it's texture can be quite coarse and wiry. There are a couple of different theories about this, one says that the process of the decrease of pigmentation is closely related to the process of hair growth, so hair may grow slightly deformed. Other theories say that grey hair has a thinner cuticle and so it is very susceptible to damage and dehydration. Also the ageing scalp produces less oils.</div><div><br /></div><div>Whatever the reason, the fact is that grey hair can be coarse and unruly. And proteins can make this worse.</div><div><b>Note: </b>grey hair dyed to another colour is still grey for hair care purposes, as only the colour changed, not the hair structure. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>When looking for products for greying hair that is wiry, coarse and matte, find something with more emollients and humectants and with less or no proteins. <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2009/01/how-to-tell-if-conditioner-has-protein.html">It's pretty easy to find proteins in ingredient lists</a>. Personally I have moved on to very light conditioners plus <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2010/10/hair-rise-gel-from-linseeds.html">flaxseed gel</a>, and my hair is behaving again. Another important thing I did was <b>minimise sun exposure</b>, which is <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2020/05/what-everyone-with-greying-hair-should.html">really damaging for grey hair</a>.<br /></div><div> </div><div> </div><div><i>If you've been wondering where I have been, I have been very busy with schooling. I'm writing my thesis, getting practical experience, and sitting in on experienced people in the field. If all goes well, I'll have my dream job later this year. So I'm still here, just busy with life. I do post on my instagram from time to time. </i> <br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size: x-small;">Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@natashabrazil?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditCopyText">Natasha Brazil</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditCopyText">Unsplash</a></span>

I love the vibe, the small-town cozy feeling combined with big-town culture, the endless choice of gorgeous Cafés. I want to share my Krakow recommendations with you.<br><br>What to see:<br><br>* Old town: But not just any way, enter it as you would in the middle ages: Walk from the Barbakan through the Florianska gate, to the Rynek square. Listen to the Hejnał (every full hour). Then go down Grodzka and continue till the river.<br><br>* Kazimierz: start at the and explore what was the Jewish district. This is my favourite part of town with lovely cafés, handmade shops. There is often a market on the Novy Square, depending on the day it can be clothes or vegetables or handicraft. <br><br>* Wawel Castle: See the cathedral and go up the bell tower, all with an audio guide. Wander around the courtyards and take a while to sit with your back to the wall next to the Chapel of St Gideon - - that's where the earth Chakra is supposed to be. I always experience a lovely stillness in this place. <br><br>For these two things the best day is on Monday because the rest of the castle attractions are closed, so it's very quiet. On another day see the royal Chambers (the Chakra is supposed to be below the Ball Hall, the last room). The treasuries are also really cool. Avoid weekends especially the afternoons.<br><br>* University: beautiful renaissance style courtyard is open all day, the inside is like Hogwarts.<br><br>* A less touristy track: Walk along the Kładka Ojca Bernatka to Podgórze, there are lovely cafés on both ends of the bridge. Walk on to the King Krak Mound, it's a lovely green quiet place with a great view of Krakow, and you can alao see into the small Plashow<br><br>* Another lovely place if you need more green is the Skałki Twardowskiego, a quarry turned stunning artificial lake. You can take a long walk in the surroundings, but if you want to sit at the lake's edge remember that the decent is adventurous and can be dangerous for children. Definitely worth it if you are an able bodied adult though.<br><br><br>Eat, drink:<br>Recommend: <br><br>Cafés:<br>Old Town:<br>* Camelot: ridiculously pretty, rooms ranging from cottage style to moody. I love the cupboard doors, outdoor seating both outside and in the courtyard is dope too. <br>* Wedel: for chocolate lovers. Best hot chocolate from the famous chocolate factory. <br><br>Kazimierz <br>* KawaLerka: Small and moody, really good coffee. <br>* Cytat for book lovers. The toilets are Harry Potter and Star Wars themed. Their lemonades are really good. <br>*..... Plants, cakes and coffee. Enjoy the green decor that you can also buy. <br>*... In the botanical garden. Lovely location, tasty coffee and cakes. Downside is that you need to buy a ticket for the botanical Gardens, also thw service is slow. <br><br>Podgórze:<br>*... For serious coffee geeks. These guys have things like aerolress, plus you can also choose your beans. <br>* <br><br><br>Restaurants:<br>* For vegan options, go to nnnmmmmm qhich has several dedicated places. <br><br>* Prima on Podgórze for really amazing pizza, probably the best I've ever had. <br><br>* Chader, Kazimierz : run with the support of a jewish cultural institute, this restaurant has amazing middle-eastern dishes, and a very atmospheric interior with books about jewish culture and some cool floor seating. <br><br>Quick bites:<br><br>Indian food in Podgórze: tasty, authentic, inexpensive. <br>Mazaya Falafel: inexpensive middle-eastern food.<br>Obwarzanki from any little stand in the old town. <br><br><br>BARS:<br>I recommend picking one area and going from place to place:<br><br>Old Town:<br>* <br><br>Kazimierz:<br>You can't go wrong here, the place is full of amazing bars. Here are my favourites:<br><br>*? Atmosperic, with old paintings on the walls. I live how so many bars here are pretty much lit be candlelight. <br>* Eszejwera: dark, atmospheric. <br><br>* Absynt: for a great selection of good Absynth. <br>*...... Communism-style bar, with it's decor, propaganda posters and the choice of drinks. <br>* Hevre: my jaw dropped when I walked in, <br>* Singer<br><br><br>* Drukarnia Eternal*Voyageurhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12696836463899195422noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010232052046034302.post-66710869018006875962021-09-02T09:18:00.000+02:002021-09-02T11:15:46.557+02:00Why You Need To Exfoliate Your Scalp<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div><div class="separator"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEB4i3CneXRMs5168wxyr0wvcLlNftBxXJTJrLj7kF7NzoM2_JI12m3pKu1Cx66P45-jt-zb00oqOnAhouVHKsXAzT5q70UH99uvvGIjg-4kfWvQ9MLI83FKdTDA0G7EtX3451euBicx6X/s1600/1630518046078355-0.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEB4i3CneXRMs5168wxyr0wvcLlNftBxXJTJrLj7kF7NzoM2_JI12m3pKu1Cx66P45-jt-zb00oqOnAhouVHKsXAzT5q70UH99uvvGIjg-4kfWvQ9MLI83FKdTDA0G7EtX3451euBicx6X/s1600/1630518046078355-0.png" width="400"></a></div><br></div></div>Do you exfoliate your scalp regularly?<br>Here is why you should:<br><blockquote style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"></blockquote>* Exfoliation removes product buikdup and dead skin<br>* This makes it easier for active ingredients (for eg scalp treatments for hair growth) to penetrate the skin.<br><blockquote style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"></blockquote>* The hair roots are lifted<br>* Your hair looks and smells fresh longer <br>* It helps with itching and dryness in this area <br><br><blockquote style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"></blockquote>I recommend scalp exfoliation for everyone, once or twice a week, unless you have dandruff, wounds, sores or another severe issue on your scalp.<br>You can chose between physical and chemical exfoliation. Physical exfoliation means there are actual particles that scrub, whereas chemical peels contain enzymes or acids that have a gentler effect. If you have dandruff, physical exfoliation causes microtears that cat worsen the issues, so you need to deal with the dandruff first. You can however use chemical /enzymatic exfoliants. <br><blockquote style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div></div></blockquote><br><blockquote style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"></blockquote>In this post I'll talk about physical scrubs. These are really easy to make at home, you just add the exfoliating ingredient to a gentle shampoo or conditioner, gel like aloe vera, or even a face cleansing gel. These products are gentle and provide slip. <blockquote style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"></blockquote><h3>What to use for DIY scalp scrubs</h3><blockquote style="margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;"></blockquote>* Sugar: I posted about the <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2011/04/diy-sugar-scalp-scrub.html?m=1">DIY sugar scalp scrub</a> a while ago. </div><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhellOyJLlFcp3cZ_BMGQrwusLiGCIOGZE3sXxuxxqzyD46GYsWBpzIGTE7VW_taqesghIiiOQgo_VOOjV9mzXbn5SSIoWWjui8WKjZhue16FmcslXd8xlXdz7HHGi4UHL9r3EQSTf0sjvP/s16000/Selftanner+Concentrate+Selbstbraunungselexir.jpg" width="98%" /></div><br /><br /></div><div><br /><center><img alt="" border="0" src="" width="98%" /></center>
I like using self-tanner all year round. It's a bit like makeup for the body, it smoothens things out a bit. Plus it makes my winter skin look like it's summer outside, which just puts me in a good mood. Also I'm actually more responsible about not overexposing my skin to the sun if I already got my tan from a tube.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">This spring I switched from a self-tanning cream to a concentrate. I had a slight mishap in the beginning and looked like a certain ex-presiden of the US for a few days. But now I really love it.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You mix a couple of drops into your regular skin care, apply it on your skin, and wait till the next day for the colour to develop. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>The advantages of a self-tanning concentrate:</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">* You can control the intensity of the tanning. You can gradually layer for the streak-free effect. Just add the smallest amount to your skin care product each day for a few days. If you want to get a more intensive colour, fast, you can use more product.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">* It's a tiny amount of a serum, so it won't clog your pores.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">* The self-tanner smell gets masked by the scent of the product you mix it with. It's not completely gone, but it's much less.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">* It takes up less space in your bathroom or travel bag.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">* You don't have to choose between skincare and self-tanning. I can add the self-tanner concentrate to a very rich body moisturiser when my skin is dry, or to a vit C serum on my face.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>Which self-tanning serum do I use?</h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I use the ones from Lavozon (Rossmann) and SunOzone (Müller). The issue with DHA-based tanners (the kind that gradually develop over time and
doesn't rub off on clothes) is than in a badly formulated product the DHA is unstable and gives off formaldehyde. In the ÖkoTest lab tests, the self-tanners from Lavozon and SunOzone were almost the only ones that <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2016/05/so-my-favourite-organic-self-tanner.html" target="_blank">didn't start giving off formaldehyde over time</a>. Most of the other tested products (organic brands as well as conventional) failed the test. Ökotest did test only the cream self-tanner version though, so I'm hoping and taking the risk that their concentrate formulation is not too different. Another thing I'm doing is storing the concentrate in the fridge, as it is heat that destabilises DHA.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The caveat is the packaging of the Lavozon and SunOzone products (I'm pretty sure these brands come from the exact same factory, as they have the same ingredient list and even the packaging is the same). The packaging tells you to use just a few drops, but the consistency and the pump are such that you have to press gently to get drops. The first time I used the product I pressed hard and got a squirt, and I assumed it was the drop they were talking about. Well, that's how I ended overdoing it on the self-tan.<br /></div> <span style="font-family: "dawning of a new day", cursive;"> </span>

Hair, especially greying hair, is highly susceptible to UV damage. Note that I live in a relatively cold climate and we don't even get that much sun.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">This winter I was diagnosed with eczema and after a couple of different
treatments the one that was most effective was UV light on the scalp.
After a while I noticed damage -- my hair was dry and coarse. <br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">If you have greying hair (doesn't matter if you dye it), your hair is bleached or damaged, or if you live anywhere with a lot of sun, or spend a lot of time outdoors, this post is for you. <br /></p><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>Do hair products with SPF work? </h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The answer is -- not well enough. It's pretty much impossible to coat every single strand of hair, and if you somehow did manage to, you'd look like you dipped it in an oil slick. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">So if you want you can use it as an additional help, but you really need to rely on physical protection.<br /> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">What does help a bit is oil -- I have seen as well tested how hair reacts to the sun with vs without a coating of oil, and can really recommend it. <br />
So we are back to using traditional ways.<br />
<br /><h3>
Hats:</h3>
I love hats, and I believe that there is one out there for every person. My go-to place is TKMaxx, I find the best ones there every summer, often made out of UV-reflecting fabric. Another go-to place is Bijour Brigitte, and of course flea markets. (Yes, this does mean I lose at least one hat per summer). <a href="https://www.extrapetite.com/2019/11/style-hacks-make-hat-smaller-scarf-magnet.html" target="_blank">Here</a> is a hack on how to make a loose-fitting hat fit better.<br />
<br /><h3>
Scarves: </h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The key here is to find a scarf that really really goes with your face or your style, otherwise it can look quite matronly. Pay attention to the fabric weight and stiffness as well to the pattern. I think you also need to experiment with many ways of tying it, to find what works for you.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Protective Updos </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Braids and buns protect at least the lenght and ends of the hair from the sun. <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>The total protection dork 'do<br /></h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">My bicycle commute hair solution is, well, rather dorky. I plop my hair with a scarf to protect my waves, and over that I put on a visor to protect my skin (imagine only the brim of a hat, without the top part). This stays on securely even if there is wind, and my waves don't get flattened. I take it off when I reach my destination, and nine times out of ten I have voluminous waves. Here is the scarf wrapping style I use:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hJkvMlsvArk" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Finally, remember that it's all about balance. I would not forgo having fun experiences because my hair might suffer, but I do try to be good about wearing a hat when possible. <br /></div><div style="text-align: right;">

</div><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZuPgMx4BxlfhGxyqCOZpQd40X02cWlpRjq4t54Y4_aiVRkyIWSzsEzWC8si3QwsIp_q2ahfgM9YN6uPShN4EN4M9hpXB1a9GwoQ7vknzhe-SYvHVuwnmJrme91W174cTl4scL_k9PEteC/s320/Solid+Shower+Gel+.jpg" width="98%" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><center><br /></center><p>
Solid products have moved from the hardcore backpacker/environmentalist niche to being the new hot thing, so I wanted to write a little about my experience with them. </p><p>The big plus point for solid bar products is their lower environmental impact-- low to no packaging, instead of a big plastic bottle, half of which is water that is transported halfway around the globe, you get a little bar in a cardboard box. Solid beauty products are dry and concentrated, this imo justifies the often slightly higher cost-- they usually last longer, volume-wise.</p><p>But lets talk about ingredients. Solid products usually don't need preservatives, because they are dry. Other than that, the formulations are often very different than those of conventional products. It's also important to note that a solid product is not automatically natural -- seem of them contain ingredients like <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2010/10/sodium-laureth-sulfate-probably-most.html" target="_blank">SLS</a> so make sure you check the ingredient list or look for products organic certificates. <br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Solid shower gel<br /></h3><p>I love these so much. While regular soaps are formulated to get heavier dirt off your hands (from cooking, cleaning, etc),
solid bath gels are much gentler and usually have a neutral pH level.
Unlike soap, they don't dry your skin and feel pretty much like regular
shower gel when you wet them. They feel luxurious and creamy, just like shower gels. I love them so much that I don't think
I'll be switching back to regular soap for my body again.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Solid body moisturisers aka lotion bars:</h3><p>Lotion bars are very moisturising and you should absolutely try them if your skin is dry. They are best used after showering or while actually in the shower. Combined with heat and water they go on easily and seal in the moisture. I like to rub the block in my hands as if I were lathering soap, this makes the bar melt. Then I apply as usual. I feel like the lotion bars seal in the moisture very effectively, and in the winter I feel like they keep me warmer. This might sound weird but someone pointed out that when your lips are cold and you apply balm, they stop feeling cold. So it's kind of like that. The downside is that the application does take a couple of extra minutes, and is not so nice if your skin isn't wet. Anyway, I don't think my skin has ever been so moisturized as it has been this winter.<br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Solid hair soaps and shampoos</h3><p>These are actually two very different products. Hair soap is soap, it has a basic pH level and honestly I haven't met any hair-care addict who was happy with it. As it raises the pH level of the hair, you need to rinse your hair with vinegar to neutralise the pH level. This shifting pf pH levels isn't kind to the hair long-term. Hair soap also performs really badly with hard water.<br /></p><p>Solid shampoo is formulated much closer to shampoo. There are a lot of very different formulations out there, so it might take some testing to find one your hair likes. Most of them give the hair more texture than slip, and can leave the hair a bit matte and cause build-up over time. However there are plenty of people who swear by shampoo bars, so if you feel like giving them a try, do! Pick ones without sulfates or sodium bicarbonate. Other ingredients to look out for is protein -- some hair types love it some hat it, I wrote more about that <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2011/03/protein-for-hair-who-what-and-how.html" target="_blank">here</a>. In the German-speaking market the <br /></p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Solid hair conditioners</h3><p>These are formulated with solid ingredients such as coconut oil, shea butter or stearyl alcohol, which makes them heavy. To solve this, some manufacturers add ingredients such as sulfates to make the bar lather, which is not very kind to the hair. I feel that if your hair is very dry, you can try out hair conditioners in a bar. If your hair is easily weighed down, skip this category.</p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Solid Deodorant</h3><p>This is a very individual product -- I find that natural deodorants are so personal, what one person swears by may not work for another person at all. Personally I have had a lot of success with the solid deodorants from Lush. <br /></p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Solid toothpaste<br /></h3><p>Fun! There are a couple of kinds out there -- while for travelers the little tablets are the most practical, I personally like powders a lot. There is also tooth soap, and while it tastes disgusting it has helped me with some gum issues. I don't really want to give out much advice here as this is more of a medical product than a beauty product, but I really encourage you to explore low-waste tooth care.<br /></p><div style="text-align: right;">

The more steps in my hair styling routine, the more likely I am to just shampoo and condition and then regret it. I love seeing other people's elaborate routines, but they aren't for me.<br /></div><div> </div><div>Right now I am sticking to a very simple routine to style my waves. I base myself on the curly-girl routine modified for wavy hair, which gives me nice defined waves and volume. I use just three product most days: flaxseed gel, aloe vera gel and shea butter or some other oil. <br /></div><div> </div><div>My simple wavy hair routine:</div><div><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>My baseline is shampooing my scalp, and condition while <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2015/05/two-ways-to-to-apply-conditioner-for.html" target="_blank">scrunching</a> my hair. </li><li>Use <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2010/10/hair-rise-gel-from-linseeds.html" target="_blank">DIY flax seed gel</a> as a leave-in conditioner. </li><li>I gently towel dry my hair, then apply a dollop of aloe vera gel in my hair, then scrunch again. <br /></li><li>I spread a tiny amount of shea butter (or another fat or oil) in my palms, and scrunch into the ends to seal and protect them.</li><li>Finally I plop my hair for 15 minutes. Sometimes I do it with a claw clip <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2011/01/plopping-for-curls-using-grips.html" target="_blank">like this</a>. I used to plop longer but keeping my scalp hot and moist for too long triggers scalp issues. </li><li>Finally <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2021/05/how-to-clip-hair-roots-for-lift-and.html" target="_blank">I clip my hair</a> to make sure my roots are lifted when they dry. <br /></li></ul><p>I always air dry unless it's an emergency, because heat is one of the biggest causes of damage. </p><p> </p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCChDFgt2m9ntTWwyoBjItVfwOI1Uto-sVtgBy7XuvQMag2ppJOIkXgYY8RmrZSFj7lG6ZeT83Zgeq7bFL63IRghnN_l8CenQDzsbaRx2uaPATDJe18mxFfTdHv2wN2aszJ8dgv_JCUnpb/s1066/Wavy+girl+routine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="922" data-original-width="1066" height="554" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCChDFgt2m9ntTWwyoBjItVfwOI1Uto-sVtgBy7XuvQMag2ppJOIkXgYY8RmrZSFj7lG6ZeT83Zgeq7bFL63IRghnN_l8CenQDzsbaRx2uaPATDJe18mxFfTdHv2wN2aszJ8dgv_JCUnpb/w640-h554/Wavy+girl+routine.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>The three techniques -- scrunching, plopping and clipping give me curls and lift, while the other products prevent frizz and maintain the curl.<br /></p><p>Of course when I have time I add extra products and steps like acidic rinses and scalp treatments. But it's really nice to have a barebones routine that doesn't take up much time and pretty much always works.</p><p>Your mileage may vary, based on your hair type and climate. I have super healthy coarse, textured hair with medium porousity (used to be high but I fixed it with lots of care), and get haircuts to thin out my hair and bring out the curl. I live in a moderate continental climate. So this post is not a prescription, but an invitation to find your own basic routine.<br /></p></div><div></div><div><div style="text-align: right;">

<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div><center></center>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Hey everyone, today I have a couple of products that I'm really excited to talk about, because they are huge favourites of mine.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>E-fiore Algae Peel-Off Moisturizing Mask </h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You know those peel-off strips for the nose? This clay mask is like one of those, but for the whole face. It leaves my pores looking so small and my entire face simply clean and glowing. The main ingredients are Diatomacecous earth and algae.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You need to apply a thicker layer so that you can peel it off afterwards. Avoid the eye area. It takes a bit of time for that thick layer to dry. The actual peeling off takes a bit of time since the whole thing doesn't come off in one go, but it is so so satisfying! You see the pore gunk come off on the mask. I'd say that the time it takes is annoying, but it cleans my pores much more effectively than regular peel-off masks. I use it only on my T-zone.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Available in many European countries via the Makeupstore online shop as well as the Makeup stores (Makeup.uk, Makeup.cz ... you get the idea). The e-fiore has an entire series of masks, and I want to try the other ones too.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXkEKrg5m7vSRi9YtTC_RUxuWHq_o72LEB6zdszNsEagadlmUoKL9e6G18MV7m5BNURBv1sohLMSlWr7qALTGExJXEgxQfQnelbFLRvEcSg18QAb7JIZHsyrcneWt0qKyqwGbmDvp1QWmp/s1000/Spirulina+and+Algea+for+combination+skin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="1000" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXkEKrg5m7vSRi9YtTC_RUxuWHq_o72LEB6zdszNsEagadlmUoKL9e6G18MV7m5BNURBv1sohLMSlWr7qALTGExJXEgxQfQnelbFLRvEcSg18QAb7JIZHsyrcneWt0qKyqwGbmDvp1QWmp/w640-h480/Spirulina+and+Algea+for+combination+skin.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>Spirulina Algae Mask from Zrob Sobie Krem </h3></div><span data-offset-key="cg87n-0-0"><span data-text="true">I apply this on the dryer areas of my skin, especially the forehead and the eye area. It's a delicate enzymatic + physical scrub, I'd call it a polishing scrub because it is really fine and smoothens everything. The product is a powder made of extremely finely ground epsom salt, talc and pumice. Add water and the mild surfactant makes a little foam. The two enzymes gently exfoliate things chemically.<br /></div><div>I love using this on my arms and legs to smoothen things out. One sachet lasts for several uses. I hope that this will come in bigger containers, because sachets aren't the most ecological solution.</div><div> </div><div>That's all for now. I'm curious about the other roll-ons from Beauty Glam, I think it's such a nice way to apply product. Also I'm embracing the way German brands are starting to finally create products around ingredients and advertising them as such. Consumers today are savvy enough to want products with specific ingredients and want to know the exact concentration.<br /></div></div><div style="text-align: right;">

You've probably heard that over-cleansing dries out the skin. And but what if I told you that cleansing in two steps can work really well for those of you with dry skin? Read on to find out why double cleansing can actually make the skin less dry, and what common product not to use.<img alt="" border="0" src="" width="98%" />
<br /></p>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><h3 style="text-align: left;">How two-step cleansing can benefit dry skin:</h3><p>* You get a thorough but gentle cleanse by using two super gentle cleansing products that don't strip the skin instead of one harsher one.<br /></p><p>* You'll need less active ingredients (that are often drying) in the rest of your skin care, because double cleansing reduces clogged pores, cysts, blackheads and general skin tone.</p>* Double cleansing removes residue of makeup and sunscreen, which often contains drying ingredients. <span><a name='more'></a></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>What products to choose if your skin is dry:</h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">The first step is oil-based, the second is water based. I have explained the two steps in detail in <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2021/05/here-is-how-to-do-two-step-cleansing.html" target="_blank">this post</a>. Here is what you need to watch out for if your skin is dry:<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><ul><li>The most common mistake people with dry skin make when it comes to cleansing? Using foam cleansers. Foam sounds like something that should be gentle, however these cleansers have a high pH level which makes them drying. </li><li>You need to look for a cleanser with a low pH level. Since most products don't declare their pH level you can use a pH test strip -- ideally you need a pH level lower than 6.</li><li>Micellar cleansers should not have alcohol among their top ingredients.</li><li>Your cleansers should have gentle surfactants. Avoid sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and soaps (sodium laurate, sodium cocoate, sodium tallowate, and other sodium --ates)</li><li>Make sure your toner is alcohol-free, or use a hydrolate instead.</li></ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Double cleansing is something I really recommend, but of course skin is individual and some dry skins work better with one cleanser. And that's ok! </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Let me know in the comments whether double cleansing is something you'd try, or maybe you are already a fan? <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-family: "dawning of a new day", cursive;"> </span></div><div style="text-align: right;">

<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="665" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZuJb0NPQn-l-qAuoUg950SrzZ0bedUrOu8HeWQmIOoL2yTRQBqaVXR42YGvHQjl1ASrNfkXh8Zq6uHmj_dIA60cBk34n4h4-cy8ij3Ulp-MWmQpDoNB96VB-eMyasc1wZBW9TqxoYgXVQ/w640-h424/How+To+dry+hair+roots.jpg" width="640" />
</div><p></p><p><br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Hey everyone, this post is filed under "I can't believe I haven't blogged about this yet". </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Clipping is my favourite way to get volume at the roots without using heat (my second-favourite being going to sleep with wet hair spread behind me on my pillow, which unfortunately gives me a slight cold). </p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span></span></p><a name='more'></a> You need either these flat clips you see on the photo. or butterfly clips. I got mine in a <i>drogerie</i>, but you can also find them online if you search for duckbill clips. If your hair is short or fine, choose smalls ones like me, for bigger curls or longer/heavier hair try bigger ones. When in doubt start with something cheap, because the right kind of clip can be a very individual thing. I also like smaller clips right now because I don't want to flatten out any waves or curls close to my scalp.<br /><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">After washing, towel-drying and plopping, bend forward to clip small sections of your hair. Put the clips in vertically, to make sure that your roots are as lifted as possible. Leaning forwards helps because in that position your hair is hanging away from your scalp. Clip against the direction of hair growth -- imagine lifting the hair away from the direction it would normally fall, and propping it up.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Lean backwards and clip a few sections at the back of your head, especially near the whorl. I do this because it looks weird if my front in voluminous and the back is flat. <br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXPIafGDLwv-ztilMPm0JYF661c0o9XwCCDXUy0JtfoygQsE2jI0WPH7OIk_HWjbQfAmcxWjf6Jm6V2mvsNYnJLImAjhT-Ft3JAGlpC_4hxTGCHU42v9zvbEOg5Tot_R35dLJBeVtCRR8y/s1000/Clipping+Hair+Roots.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="676" data-original-width="1000" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXPIafGDLwv-ztilMPm0JYF661c0o9XwCCDXUy0JtfoygQsE2jI0WPH7OIk_HWjbQfAmcxWjf6Jm6V2mvsNYnJLImAjhT-Ft3JAGlpC_4hxTGCHU42v9zvbEOg5Tot_R35dLJBeVtCRR8y/w640-h432/Clipping+Hair+Roots.jpg" width="640" /></a></p><p style="text-align: justify;">As your hair dries, you can move the clips to a different spot if needed.<br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">I use up to 10-15 clips for my entire scalp. I find that clipping smaller sections is better, as the hair is not too heavy. It took me a couple of times to figure out how I need to clip the hair around my part, as I don't have a "clean" part. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">As my hair is heavy when wet and prone to frizz, I wait till it is completely dry to remove the clips. But I know some people who remove them after 15-20 minutes. Go slowly, so as not to tangle your curls. <br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><b>As a bonus: two lazy-girl hacks --</b></p><p style="text-align: justify;">I have used on huge claw clip on the top of my head instead of the little clips. Works well for volume, but you don't get much control.<br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">I wrap a scarf around my hair, babuszka-style, if I have to run errands before my hair is dry. I use a very thin silk scarf (to allow circulation and prevent electric charge) and pretend it's a look.<br /></p><div><div style="text-align: right;">

<p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh6-000fVDTheYh23zizUC88dikqaYvqu3r8BN5SG1QJOe9NNGk8uvktggmLjNZFoG05hSLZ0Ex_zDFbjGZrWRBuP0yT6TasaOT9NO9kRIWeRNd3S_mK7Jp3QcIr-p6afqjblmlLlmWR3a/w426-h640/apostolos-vamvouras-qe3JZZ3YzvQ-unsplash.jpg"/><br /></div>
<div><p style="text-align: center;"><br />
</p><p></p><p>One of the best things I have done for my skin is double cleansing. The science behind is that some impurities are better dissolved in oil, and others in water.<br /></p><p>Unless you live in place with pollution-free air and use no products on your face whatsoever, I recommend trying it out. If you already have tried double cleansing and weren't excited, I still invite you to read this post and see double-check if you have done it correctly.<br /></p><p></p><p>Before I get to the how, here are a couple of reasons double cleansing is important:<span></span></p><a name='more'></a><span></span> <br /><p></p><p></p><blockquote><p>* Clogged pores clear up, so do cysts, blackheads and whiteheads</p><p> * You completely remove all products, including silicone-based makeup and mineral sunscreen</p><p>* Your skin can absorb active ingredients better when it's a white slate<br /></p><p>* Conversely you need less (potentially drying) active ingredients because your skin acts out less<br /></p><p>* Mineral sunscreen ingredients pretty much come off only with oil-based cleansers<br /></p><p>* You prevent drying of skin, as traces of makeup and sunscreen products can dry out the skin</p></blockquote><p></p><p> </p><p>So which products should you use? </p><p>I recommend using an oil-based product + a water based one. And double cleansing just <b>once a day</b>.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Step 1: Oil based cleansing<br /></h3><p>You can choose between a cleansing oil/ balm or a micellar cleanser. These will effectively dissolve oils and fats, as well as makeup and sunscreen ingredients that are hard to cleanse with surfactants.<br /></p><p><b>Use an oil or balm if:</b> your skin is oily, you use waterproof products, you use heavier products (whether skin care or makeup), use waterproof sunscreen, or deal with air pollution. <i>If this does not apply, go for a micellar cleanser.</i></p><p>I like cleansing oils with emulsifiers because they can be rinsed off easily without rubbing or heat. (I don't like to use the classic hot washcloth method since my skin is prone to cuperose). If you use a "regular" oil, make sure it has a low comodogenic rating.<br /></p><p>When choosing a micellar cleanser, make sure alcohol isn't one of the top ingredients as it can be drying.<br /></p><p><b>How to:</b> Apply the oil on dry skin, massage it in. Then add water and massage to emulsify. The cleansing oil can work better with the gunk if there is not water involved at first (you can test this out when you have to clean an oily pan). Gently wipe it off.<br /></p><p>I use the cleansing oil from Alterra (Rossmann) and the <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2017/05/which-old-favourite-products-do-i-still.html" target="_blank">Catrice Micellar cleanser</a>.<br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Step 2: Water based</h3><p>Gels, foams, soaps, bars -- any water-based cleanser can be used. These will remove the residue of the oil-based cleanser, and clean the pores thoroughly. Pick one without sulfates. I like to alternate between the Sylveco Chamomille cleansing gel and <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2018/08/how-to-get-rid-of-hyperpigmentation-age.html" target="_blank">wardi-shan soap</a>.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">And after that?<br /></h3><p>As a third-ish step I like to spray or wipe my face with a toner, or a <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2010/11/hydrolates-water-based-plant-essences.html" target="_blank">hydrolate</a>. This will remove any cleanser residue and balances the pH of the skin. After that I apply my serum and moisturiser.<br /></p><p>I double-cleanse in the evening, to remove the day from my skin. In the morning I usually just wipe my skin with a hydrolate, and if I feel very oily I might use a gently second-step cleanser.<br /></p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">How to test if you need to double cleanse<br /></h3>Cleanse half of your face with one product, the other with two. Now wipe each part with a cotton pad dipped in a toner. You'll probably see traces of dirt and makeup on one side, and a snowy white colour on the other. If not, you probably don't need to be double cleansing.<br /></div><div><center><img alt="" border="0" src="" width="98%" /></center><div style="text-align: right;">

Skin care and makeup with SPF doesn't have to prove their sun protection claims, often protection against UVA rays isn't listed. Not to say that there aren't problems with sunscreen regulation (<a href="https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-9622(17)30035-X/fulltext" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">USA</a>, <a href="https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/117585631/consumer-nz-says-nine-out-of-20-sunscreens-dont-provide-protection-they-claim" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">NZ</a>), but skin care with SPF flies below the radar. In European and east Asian sunscreen you are likely to see on the packaging whether the protection is full-spectrum, as well as the PA value.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>Moisturisers with SPF aren't optimal moisturisers</h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You can't take a moisturiser and just add SPF on top, the product has to be formulated around the sunscreen ingredients. These are usually fat-soluble and feel heavy on the skin. To provide enough protection there needs to be quite a lot of them in the product. All of this places quite a lot of restrictions on the rest of the ingredients that go into the product. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Because of this it makes sense to use moisturisers without SPF which are formulated purely around skin care. <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Finally, zinc oxide (pretty much the only ingredient that provides protection from the full spectrum of UVA) is drying, so unless your skin is oily you need a good highly moisturising product to balance that out.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I hope this was useful. I use <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2017/05/perfect-mineral-nano-free-sunscreen.html" target="_blank">this sunscreen</a> since several years, it has come out in a couple of more shades. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Hello everyone,</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">With all the hand washing and disinfecting a lot of us are dealing with very dry hands. It's not just an issue of aesthetic and comfort -- cracked and wounded skin is much harder to clean and disinfect,<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Today I'm going to talk about not just about products, but about other factors that can influence the skin of your hands. <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>Bring your own disinfection:</h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The free disinfection sprays that stand in stores are mostly cheap and very drying, so I usually bring a nicer one and use that. Look for Ethanol rather than isopropyl alcohol, fragrance-free, ideally with a moisturising ingredient like glycerin.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I have and can highly recommend Sterilium (especially Sterillium Pure). It's highly effective but not harsh on the skin. I decant it into little bottles to use on the go. It's apparently a favourite among health workers in Germany.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span><a name='more'></a></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>How do you wash your hands at home?<br /></h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">With our hands taking a beating, it's worth minimising aggressive cleaning products at home as much as possible. Switch out all hand soaps for gentler versions or soap-free cleansers. Look for natural products or ones made for sensitive skin, swap body soaps for solid shower gel bars.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Also wash your hands with cold water instead of warm, this is gentler on your skin's protective layer. Dry your hands gently, don't rub.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>How are you cleaning your home?</h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Cleaning the home takes a huge toll on the hands, and right now many of us are noticing that more clearly. <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The best and most effective way to protect the hands are of course gloves -- they minimise contact with water, and keep your hands clean which cuts down on washing. You need to change your gloves if the gloves get wet or sweaty inside.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I also recommend to switch to gentler cleaning products.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>Protection from the cold </h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Cold temperatures are harsh on the hands, so I try to wear gloves as soon as the thermometer drops. Especially when I'm on my bike.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>Allergies and irritations</h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If your hands have wounds or rashes or are cracking, it might be more than dryness. Irritant contact dermatitis is when the skin is inflamed due to being injured by cold, over-exposure to water, chemicals, etc. In this case a hand cream will not be enough, and you might need a medical product to calm the inflammation.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Skin issues are often worse in the spring, as they are closely connected with pollen allergies. I have a family members that has skin issues and the dermatologist tested
them for allergies and it turns out they are allergic to pollen even
though they aren't showing symptoms. <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>My hand cream recommendations:</h3></div><div style="margin-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">* Weleda skin food <br /></div><div style="margin-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">* Hand / foot creams with 10% urea. These are pretty cheap in drugstores. Foot creams are even richer than hand creams.</div><div style="margin-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">* Nipple care products or pure lanolin -- works absolutely wonders for chapped skin anywhere. </div><div style="margin-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">* Homeoplasmine </div><div style="margin-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">* Beesewax creams with propolis (I buy them from local producers)<br /></div><div style="margin-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">* Hand creams with vitamin A and E</div><div style="margin-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">* Hand products meant for gardeners </div><div style="margin-left: 40px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I personally haven't had that much success with pure oils/butters, because they lack a <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2010/08/how-moisturising-works-humidity-and.html" target="_blank">humectant</a>. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>Hand spa</h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You can help your hand care product to penetrate your hands better if you put on gloves. I actually like to put on hand cream under household gloves when I clean, but a chicer way to do it are the thin cotton gloves especially for this purpose. <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><h3>Supplements:</h3></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Make sure you are drinking enough water, as it has a a direct an immediate effect on your skin. Other than that, it's worth checking out if you are deficient in <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2018/09/vitamin-d-should-you-supplement.html" target="_blank">Vitamin D</a>, E and C. <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">So there you go, <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: right;">

<img border="0" src="" width="98%" /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2PH2lX7SqJBwTxV3dpc2IPuIG-IAhuHYjVayY0EiROvggEzTyUASXoLa7hJ9ZPFdwSmZehX3OTFSK1br88U6NInzdpP-mLAOAI6SrLrmdm-7NLUDNeZ4n6UkWyRY4rD_som3zia_TNbwU/s16000/melanie-pongratz-BECWWmIuJ2k-unsplash%25281%2529.jpg" width="98%" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div>
<p></p><p>A small obsession of mine are slow, dark remixes of fun upbeat songs. I'm not sure how it started, but I began keeping a mental collection of covers that skew dreamy, electronic and dark. Here are my favourites: <br /></p><p> </p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Daughter -- Get Lucky<br /></h3><p>I think it all started from this song. When Daft Punk asked their fans to make covers out of their electronic dance piece <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NV6Rdv1a3I" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Get Lucky</a>, Daughter put her own unique spin on it, and gave us this mellow, minimalist version that puts a dark twist on the originally upbeat lyrics. I was mesmerised, and mildly obsessed how reinterpreting the song worked. <br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/T5Cp55MvX54" width="560"></iframe><br /></p><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Obsession <br /></h3><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM5dA9lhO-s" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The original by Animotion</a> is a forgettable little 80s number. The version by Karen O (from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) that was the intro of Flesh And Bone -- an amazing, but very dark series about ballet -- translated it into a moody and dark piece. I also think the video is pretty cool.<br /></p><p><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Waw8_NJ5W4A" width="560"></iframe><br /></p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Wszystko Czego Dzis Chce</h3><p>The <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiIm8bHr5TuAhU1C2MBHdvPA6kQyCkwAHoECAMQAw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DolkNnmhMj7Y&usg=AOvVaw2ZIf_1wKUvmzSKJaDAdI8x" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">original 80s version</a> by Trojanowska is a fun, emancipated song where the girl laughs at the serious plans of the guy, saying she just wants to <i>"fly / there and back / from your arms straight to heaven"</i>. Monika Brodka's dark synthwave version makes the same lyrics express a stifling mood with no hope for the future. The video of Monika in the communist-era bar with the pissed-off dancers is just perfect.<br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IrjizI0wsXU?start=24" width="560"></iframe><br /></p><div style="left: -99999px; position: absolute;"><div class="ll-1-3">ly</div><div class="ll-1-4">

The vocals have a longing quality to it that gives me goosebumps.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3JFFB3Z4ibk" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p><br /></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Aaj jaane ki zid na karo</h3><p>This is the one case where I don't necessarily thing the new version is better, since <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jQdk8UfaDU">the original</a> is very sweet. But the version from Ay Dil Hai Mushkil is very danceable, plus it's got Aishwarya Rai in the video. <i>"Tonight, don’t insist on leaving. Just keep on sitting close to me".</i></p><p><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gU5rJPa1FI8" width="560"></iframe><br /></p><p> </p><p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Crazy In Love</h3><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViwtNLUqkMY" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The original</a> is run-on-the-mill young Beyonce, but the version she did for 50 shades is a whole mood:<br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bfQ7ucGQdOM" width="560"></iframe><br /></p><center><img alt="" border="0" src="" width="98%" /></center>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Lorde -- Everybody Wants To Rule The World</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">So I think we can officially agree all the songs on here are remixes of 80s tracks. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGCdLKXNF3w" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The original </a>by Tears For Fears is no exception. Lorde's version is dark and powerful:<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DaVA6sgOpws" width="560"></iframe><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">That's it. If there are any good ones I have missed, drop them in the comment section!<br /></div>

<img border="0" src="" width="98%" /></div><center><img alt="" border="0" src="" width="98%" /><br /></center><p>A long time back I wrote a bit about hooded eyes. Now I have some fresh ideas that I want to share:<br /></p><p>A hooded eye is not just little space on the moveable lid. It means that the unmovable lid looks pillowy -- however this is often not very obvious, especially on younger people. The more clear sign of the hooded eye is that the crease is longer than average, it extends to the outer corner of the eyes. This makes applying regular eyeliner impossible -- if you draw it on with your eyes closed, it will look very strange when you open your eyes (and vice versa). (I'm not going to talk about east Asian and monolid eyes here,
because this is a whole big topic I'm absolutely not qualified for.) </p><p>Before I delve into actual makeup, I want to say that I always find it a pity when people approach hooded eyes as something that needs to be fixed. I find this eye feature is very charming, it is a very specific look and has not been called "bedroom eyes" in vain. A lot, and I mean really a lot of gorgeous famous women have hooded eyes -- from actresses to supermodels to singers. <br /></p><p>I found it a pity that Renee Zellweger got work done that took away this distinctive feature of hers. I mean she is a beautiful woman and looks great still, but she looks so, I dunno, rather generic Caucasian now. I'm a practical person when it comes to manicures -- if it chips in two days, I can't be bothered. So I have been looking into all kind of base products and top coats, and wasn't that impressed. Most didn't seem to do make my manicure last longer. I also didn't want to use anything with formaldehyde -- while it strengthens the nails at first, with time it damages the nail and can make it separate from the nail bed.<br />
<br />
After a lot of research I stumbled on the Orly Bonder Rubberized Formula -- a sticky base that is free from formaldehyde.<br />
<br />It's yellowish and a bit thick. When dry it's still tacky and rubbery, this makes it grip on to the nail polish so well. The Orly Bonder makes my manicures last around at least twice as long as along. And I'm not very gentle with my nails -- I do a lot of things with my hands, including cooking and washing the dishes by hand (and I'm unfortunately lazy about wearing gloves, mainly because I seem to be in between sizes). </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> <br />
<b>The Orly Bonder has another huge advantage. </b>My nails are not very strong, and wearing nail polish for more than a week means my nail layers separate and peel off. This means I could paint my nails once every 4-8 weeks, that's how long it takes for the damage to grow out. Since I am using Orly Bonder Rubberised formula, my nails have been completely healthy. The base coat creates a barrier between my nail and the polish.<br />
<br />
<b>Minuses?</b> The Orly Bonder does not completely keep my nails from getting stained by my red and orange nail polish. The Bonder itself leaves a light yellowish tint on the nails, which looks flattering on some nails and less so on others. The formula is a bit rubbery, which means it can be less than smooth to apply. Also the brush isn't the best.<br />
<br />
The right way to apply it is to apply on dry and oil-free nails. Make sure that the outer edges of the nails are well covered, you can sweep a bit under the nail just to make sure. Although the product is not that cheap, a little goes a very long way. The photo of the bottle in the post is a bit old, the new one is a bit sleeker.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Have you use the Orly Bonder? Or do you have other holy grail nail bases?<br /></div>

I'm writing this post because some of my family have been diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency, with one family member having extremely low levels. <br /> </p><p>If you live in a country where you don't get much sun during the winter, you might be feeling sluggish and moody during the cold half of the year. And might be chalking it up to things like spending so much time indoors, the cold and the darkness. But actually a lot of people living in the higher latitudes are deficient in Vitamin D -- <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21310306/" target="_blank">this paper</a> suggests 41,6% of people in the US. And double that number of black people -- research shows that the more melanin your skin has, the less it absorbs the ultraviolet radiation that is needed to synthesize vitamin D.<span></span></p><a name='more'></a><br /><p></p><p>The most common symptom of Vit D deficiency is lethargy and a grey mood. But others are harder to catch, like pain in the bones, nausea, dizziness, headaches, skin issues and a sluggish immune system (vit D deficiency is linked with respiratory diseases). These symptoms that are so common that they often get chalked up to other issues. The only tell is that you feel better in the summer, when your vitamin D tank is full again. </p><p>Fortunately it's really easy to check if your are deficient -- it's a
simple blood test, in Germany it costs around 20€. My doctor
recommended I test my vitamin D levels twice: once in the spring and
once in the autumn. My levels in the autumn were good, meaning that my
skin could produce it without problems, however the levels in the spring
were abysmal. </p><p><br />
I have heard a lot of myths about Vitamin D and getting enough sun. Here are two:<br /> </p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Going without sunscreen in the summer <i>won't </i>
help with your vitamin D levels in the winter. The body stores vitamin D for only two months. Also, sun-burnt skin doesn't produce vit D as well as healthy
skin does, so don't skimp on the sunscreen.</li><li>If you are going out into the sun in the winter, it's might seem as if it's easy to get your Vit D. However many people have a hard time producing vit D, for reasons not really well known. I've heard theories that the low angle of the sun in the winter means that the "quality" of the light is not just the same as in the summer. Low levels of calcium in the bones may also be responsible.<br /></li></ul><p>
<br />
In my case my doctor recommended I start supplementing vitamin D starting every September, and continue till the days get sunny in the spring. She recommended Vigantol tablet, and that is what I and my family have had really good results with. It's suitable for both adults and kids. I feel better physically and mentally than I used to in the winter. Of course I make sure I go out and get some sun as well, but in the winter months we get weeks where the clouds and the fog obscure the sun completely, or it's too cold to expose naked skin for more than a couple of minutes.<br /></p><p>I hope this has been useful for someone. Hello everyone,<br />
<br />
I hope quarantine has not been treating you too badly. Here in Germany shops and schools have reopened, though with a lot of restrictions. I'm still working less hours as I normally do, and decided to use this to go back to the basics of caring for my hair. I want to understand how specific products and ingredients work with my hair. I normally use several products and techniques and often don't know why the work (or not). I also see a lot of magic combos online -- detailed routines and product lists that I then try to copy.<br />
<br />
Now it's back to the basics -- I'll wash my hair any do just one thing. Only aloe vera gel. Or only a protein mask. Or only a vinegar rinse. I document the results in an excel table: I record volume, curl, definition, shine and softness. I also note how my hair looks on the second and third and fourth day. I also test and record techniques. For example air drying <i>vs</i> air drying most of the way with a hair dryer at the end vs using the hair dryer first and then letting my hair air dry.<br />
<br />
The results have been very illuminating. I know now that anything with protein will give my hair a lot of curl, that aloe vera gives me hold and a nice texture and I can use tons of it without overdoing it. And yes, most of the products I tested are simple kitchen-shelf type of things because they just work so well for me. I have written a lot about these <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/search/label/DIY%20hair%20products" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
I really recommend trying out a hair diary, whether a detailed excel sheet or a quick jot of what you did and the effect. Don't forget to include the weather, especially if it's raining, as that can influence frizz levels!<br />

Rice water is one of my very best hair care tips. The proteins my waves more pronounced.
It keeps my hair fresh, because the starch absorbs oil. The rice rinse also calms frizz and makes my hair smoother to the touch, and much easier
to detangle. It minimises breakage through rubbing because the hair
cuticles get smoother, so it's perfect for high-porosity hair.<br />

<h3>
How to make the rice water hair rinse</h3>
Here are a couple of methods that bring slightly different effects. I suggest playing around!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The water keeps a few days in the fridge, after that it starts turning into vinegar which is still good for the hair and the skin but does smell acidic.<br />
<br />
You need rice and water. Any sort of rice is fine. Give it a quick wash to get rid of any
dust and dirt, and to remove excess ground rice which can leave a white
coating on the hair.<br />
<h4>
Rinsed rice</h4>
Soak the
rice in water for at least 15 minutes or overnight. If possible use hot water, this draws out
more nourishing ingredients out of the rice. Sieve out the rice, cook the rice on the
same day and enjoy it. <br />
<h4>
Cooked rice water concentrate</h4>
Boil rice as you
normally do (without salt), but use much more water than usual (so instead 1:2 rice:water try 1:3). Sieve out the water. This water is a concentrate and is to be used <b>diluted</b>,
2-3 tbsp per one glass of water. I feel like this method is better, probably the boiling extracts more ingredients out of the rice, but do try both versions to see what your hair likes. The rice itself end up up a bit sticky so you can make a pudding or fry it. <br />
<br />
<h3>
</h3>
<h3>
How to use the rice water hair rinse</h3>
Use as your last rinse after washing! Don't rinse it out, dry as usual. I like to follow it up with my <a href="http://www.venusianglow.com/2010/10/hair-rise-gel-from-linseeds.html" target="_blank">DIY flaxseed gel</a>.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Hello everyone, I recently go the chance to try <a href="https://www.tom-pat.com/?fbclid=IwAR14R1yooK7M1IT92Ps0cxOC5C1a0rzpZqYU9l4I1u6K8w6SHgPf2RVDKWs" target="_blank">sea sponge tampons from Tom&Pat</a> and I was really curious. I am all for natural, low-waste periods, and while I am a big fan of my period cup I realised that they may not work for everyone. The sea-sponge is a natural alternative to a tampons, there are low-waste since on can last around 6 months. They are a renewable resource, and have been used in ancient times -- and here I was, thinking that tampons are a modern invention. They are also a good alternative if you want to avoid the pesticides, bleach and halog<span class="b1">en</span><span class="b2">ic or</span><span class="b3">gan</span><span class="b4">ic </span><span class="b5">compounds that are often found in conventional (non-organic) tampons and pads.</span><b class="b4"> </b><br />
<br />
The sponges that I got are roughly the size of a plum, which makes them suitable for anyone with medium flow. They got me through 8 hours of bleeding (I removed them after that time as I would a tampon, to avoid TSS). Tom&Pat offer them in three sizes, depending on how your flow is.<br />
<br />
So, did they work? Yes! I didn't leak at all, and the sponge contained everything. And it was super super comfortable. <br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
My friend, whom I gave a sponge to test, discovered that it best to soften them by wetting and then squeeze drying before inserting. The menstrual sponges are easy to insert, even if you haven't started bleeding yet. This is one huge advantage of the sponge over a tampon -- one of my worst period experiences was having a tampon stuck half-in because I had tried to insert it when I started cramping, but wasn't bleeding yet; the cotton kind of suctioned itself to the skin.<br />
Just like a tampon, you need to insert the menstrual sea sponge deeper inside the vaginal canal. Once in, I couldn't feel it at all, and I didn't get that dry feeling that tampons give me. If the sponge is used just as a "plug" and not pushed in, it can feel scratchy. I think the reason that I couldn't feel the menstrual sponge at all is that a) it was moist and b) it adapts its shape to the body. Unlike the cup, the sponge can stay inside during sex.<br />
<br />
Removing the menstrual sea sponge is easy enough at home, but messy. It helps to be in the shower or have a bit of toiled paper on hand to contain the mess. I would not use the sponge if I knew I had to change it in a public toilet, unless I was at the end of my period.<br />
<br />
The sponge does glide out easily when it's full, so it was easy for me to remove it even without a string. People with a high cervix people like to attach a string to make it easier to pull out -- in that case I'd suggest a natural fibre, not dyed. Unwaxed dental floss is great. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="573" data-original-width="851" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEvoCJsIHRfx7cz2mzCbL73sP1q9YXH0xuH9Yr9Drt70slSzgZCvtdIe9BjvbeSf5N1TW8WMoGjFpKn7Rvd6W7vCUD8cIjQD_Snz1sUIJXyD4n4LB8egbWjIHhuMhLiqv00vdpKlEooz_L/s1600/Menstrual+sponge+review.jpg" width="98%" /> </div>
<br />
<br />
Washing out the sponge was messy, but I expected worse. The sponge gathers the blood in all its openings, but the tissue itself doesn't soak up the blood. I washed the sponges out with cold (!) water and got them perfectly clean. I used a natural unscented soap to clean it properly, and soaked overnight with white vinegar to kill any remaining bacteria. I let it dry before using it, I feel like having it continuously wet would cause bacteria to multiply. Fortunately the package from Tom&Pat contains 5 sponges, which covers you for several uses. Some people use essential oils to disinfect the sponge, but essential oils are powerful active ingredients so I really don't recommend any tea-tree oil in your vagina.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://mashable.com/2015/07/19/menstrual-sponge-review/?europe=true" target="_blank">Mashable</a> got an expert to talk about the safety of menstrual sea sponges:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Yes, they're absolutely safe," said <a href="http://nyulangone.org/doctors/1922064583/raquel-b-dardik" target="_blank">Dr. Raquel Dardik</a>, a gynecologist at the Joan H. Tisch Women’s Health Center at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York. <br />
"There haven't been a lot of really big alternatives to tampons and
pads in forever. A tampon is just a piece of cotton that's shaped so
that it absorbs blood so that it doesn't come out, and in that sense,
menstrual sponges are doing exactly the same thing because that's what
sponges do." </blockquote>
I also have a theory that because the sea sponges don't "suck" moisture but rather collect it passively, they don't disturb the natural flora and fauna of the vagina.<br />
Finally -- I have seen warning about sponges possibly having grit and sand inside from low-quality sponges, but my sponges from Tom&Pat were perfectly clean.<br />
<br />
So, this was my experience with menstrual sea sponges! I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and absorbent they are, and invite you to try them out. The ones from Tom&Pat are hand-harvested so as not to damage the root, and a part of their proceedings If you have ever tried menstrual natural sponges, tell me about your experiences in the comments!<br />
<br />
The sponges were kindly provided by Tom&Pat, all opinions are 100% mine. <br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hey everyone, now that summer is coming I have to write about this. I made a huge mistake last summer which really damaged my hair, and I hope that this post can help some of you from repeating my mistake.<br />
<br />
To preface this -- I have quite a bit of grey hair. I started greying when I was in my early twenties, a few whites here and there. Now there are many more, though not yet enough for a proper salt-and-pepper look (I tried, and it did not look good). If you have any greys you might know that they don't just have a different colour, they have a whole different texture. You might have noticed your first grey because they grew straight up like an antenna (I did). They are coarser and stubborn. And they are very susceptible to UV damage.<br />
<br />
I did not know this.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
Last summer I took great care of protecting my skin from the sun, but for the first time I didn't cover my hair. Instead of my usual wide-brimmed hats, I used those <a href="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1507015264727-8e0a4e8d3f8d?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&ixid=eyJhcHBfaWQiOjEyMDd9&auto=format&fit=crop&w=1352&q=80" target="_blank">headband-hats</a> where the top of your head is uncovered. Or no hat at all, just sunscreen on my face. And I was outside a lot, including an hour+ long commute on my bicycle. At the end of the summer my hair looked bad. It was frizzy, it was rough, and wouldn't cooperate. <strike>(I wanted to post a photo but I realised I had deleted the ones where my hair looks wacky)</strike>. Found one. I had no idea what was going on, since I hadn't changed anything about my routine. Then I stumbled upon the information that sunlight damages hair with no melanin more than regular hair. To clarify -- dyeing your hair (whether with Henna or chemicals) does not protect the hair from UV light, just like self-tanner doesn't protect the skin.<br />
<br />
So there you go -- a cautionary tale. Protect your hair from the sun this summer, whether it's greying or not.</div>

Hello everyone, hope that quarantine is treating you right! Here are a couple of lovely links to sweeten your weekend:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
</blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<ul>
<li>This <a href="https://www.sarralbe.fr/webcam.html" target="_blank">stork nest webcam</a> is so adorable. My favourite part is when the dad(?) returns to the nest at dusk and they kind of greet each other and chat before settling down to sleep.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>I am doing the <a href="https://www.coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-being" target="_blank">Science Of Well-Being online course</a> from the Yale University and can really, really recommend it. It goes beyond the basics and delves into really interesting research (did you know that our minds are really bad at predicting what will and won't make us happy?) and is very pragmatic.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://dresslikeaparisian.com/fashion-confinement-the-future-and-i/" target="_blank">Älois Guinut asks thought-provoking questions</a> about fashion and consumerism post-Covid. We all hoped that the quarantine would save the environment, but it looks like production and consumption is going to soar as soon as quarantine is over.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Kim's Convenience is a series that I have been binge-watching. It's about a Korean family that owns a small convenience store in Toronto. It has a comforting humour and deftly plays with east-asian stereotypes without falling pray to them. My favourite part are the weird repeat customers in the stores and the very dorky Shannon.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.hemingwayapp.com/" target="_blank">The Hemingway Editor</a> is not only an amazing spelling and grammar checker, it will streamline your writing style and help you keep your sentences readable.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSJ4gkVC6NrvII8umztf0Ow" target="_blank">Chilled Cow</a> is fully of low-fi beats for the best background music. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqgQ_ydynCA">This track</a> is my current favourite.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>And now I give you the best fashion and makeup channel on youtube: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXLdps0aVzxxet8avg9OLYQ">Aly Art</a>. I recommend starting with her body type videos. Dipping into this system of understanding face and body types has really done wonders for me in terms of understanding why certain looks don't work for me even thought they should because I'm a "pear" or whatever. Aly throws in tiny pearls of wisdom in her videos that have been game-changers for me -- for example I followed her suggestions for my body type (SN) and did my eyeliner soft and chunky and then lightly smudged my lipstick in the corners, and bam! I can't believe what a huge difference this made.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://www.instagram.com/brownhistory/" target="_blank">@brownhistory</a> is the most interesting account of instagram. It documents unseen and forgotten moments in the history of brown communities, with both heartbreaking and heartwarming and sometimes quite humorous stories and pictures.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://www.instagram.com/mazale_/" target="_blank">@mazale</a> has the most swoonworthy home ever.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>My favourite song at the moment: Don't Delete The Kisses. Bonus: <a href="http://songexploder.net/wolf-alice" target="_blank">Song Exploder's podcast on this song</a>. </li>
</ul>
