Tsūtenkaku Tower, Osaka by Night

This weeks photo is of the Shinsekai district in Osaka, Japan with a view through to the Tsūtenkaku Tower at night. It's one of about 500 frames that look very similar and is part of my month's timelapse project that aims to give a glimpse of the movement and vibrance of Osaka city.

Osaka Umeda Skyline by Night

Umeda is the main business and commercial centre of Osaka. Apparently the name means "plum field, but as you can see, its been a little while since there's been an orchard of these trees here! One of the most interesting buildings in this scene is a skyscraper that has an elevated highway running right through the middle of it! (there's a close-up image of this in the main blog post!)

Kinkaku-ji Temple of the Golden Pavilion Kyoto

The Golden Pavilion is three-story building the top of which is covered in gold leaf and is set in a beautiful Japanese strolling garden. Naturally its a popular destination for tourists and Japanese visitors. Its also the perfect setting for getting dressed up in a Kimono and getting your photo taken, as in the image below!

Yokohama Ferris Wheel and Waterfront, Japan

Yokohama is a name that's better known as a brand of tires outside Japan. Its also however a port city that's very close to Tokyo. In Japan its well-known for its waterside location including an amusement park and vibrant nightlife.

This image was taken just after dusk using a long exposure, the result being some motion blur on the ferris wheel.

Motion blur in Tokyo, Japan

You might have noticed that there haven't been any photos here for a little while. The main reason is that towards the end of February I was busy putting together a timelapse video for the month - of Tokyo.

My timelapse project - to shoot a timelapse for each month of 2012 is taking up far more time than I thought, but the benefit is that I'm learning new things and getting better at old things with each new video.

This week's photo is one of the stills taken from the timelapse - its a long exposure shot of 2 seconds taken at the front of a driverless metro system that makes its way around the port area: the Yurikamome Line. This train allows you to sit right up at the front window and get an incredible view of Tokyo Bay along the way, and happens to be just about perfect for shooting timelapse.
