Throughly enjoyed playing these records. In a percussive mood after passing through the jazz cafe last night (OneTaste). Some of them are from best of compilations, but I figure so what.. they made it into those shortlists for a reason, right? Highlights include some lovely harmonies on the Fontella Bass opener and from the Yusef Lateef track ‘Live Humble’. The jazz-folk waltzy number from the outstanding Portico Quartet, got a reload for my guests this evening… I could go on… alright then, I also found great little Ben Harper acoustic guitar serenade, and blew the digital dust of the marvelous ‘Medicine For My Pain’ by the late Lynden David Hall. I remember the first time I heard this record - I think I played it 11 times over on repeat.

Familiar Ground - Cinematic Orchestra ft. Fontella Bass (Ma Fleur)
Knee Deep In The North Sea - Portico Quartet (Knee Deep In The North Sea)
Life In Technicolor - Coldplay (Viva La Vida)
Bibanke - Asa (Asa)
Saturn - Stevie Wonder (Songs In The Key of Life [Reissue])
If It Wasn’t For Herbie And Chick - Frank McComb (A Tribute To The Masters)
I’ve Got The World On A String - Sarah Vaughan (The Best Of…)
Harry Hippie (Bobby Womack) - The Very Best of…
Sweet Nothing Serenade (Ben Harper) - Both Sides Of The Gun
High And Dry - Radiohead (The Best Of…)
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Paul Simon (1964-1993)
Medicine 4 My Pain - Lynden David Hall (Sexy Cindarella [Live Acoustic Edition])
Live Humble - Yusef Lateef (Introducing… )
Thank You Master For My Soul - Donny Hathaway (Everything is Everything)

Some great records in session 6, from some artists that are new to me (Yoav, Asa, Brett Dennen). Jeff Buckley’s ”Lover, you should have come over*” is old and peculiar, it’s title needs a caveat that newcomer Brett Dennan’s “Darlin’ do not fear’ aptly provides: ”Lover…” is a poigniant song about regret and sacrifice and not the schtik of today’s R&B-movie records. You may remember it from the forgettable Cullum cover (I don’t), but I was struck by the compelling lyrics full of sacrifice and totality that really come across in this original:

“It’s never over; my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder…
…It’s never over; all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter”

In fact these are all v.lyrical records, and the shakespearean flava doesn’t let up - Lizz Wright’s Dreaming Wide Awake is amazing - I woke up to it after taking a power-nap, her voice has a stirring quality, but the lyrics are stronger than any alarm:

“My eyes burn /I have seen the glory of a brighter sun
My heart aches / It has felt the peace of perfect love
My mind fails / as I try to recall the bliss of glorious day”

Tosin does a great job on Eric Lau’s new album, a consumate crooner. And Asa, who visits the UK next month, is in fine form on ‘Jailer’. Doutbless I’ll be spinning more from them in future sessions: here’s the full list:

Eric Lau ft. Tosin - Don’t Let ‘Em
He Aint Heavy, He’s my Brother [Previously Unissued] - Donny Hathaway (These Songs For You, Live)
Darlin’ Do Not Fear - Brett Dennen (So Much More)
Lover, you should have come over - Jeff Buckley (Grace)
Wires - Athlete (Live In San Francisco)
Yeah, The End - Yoav (Charmed & Strange)
Afro Beat Blues - Hugh Masekela (The CHISA years)
Jailer - Asa (Jailer)
He Say She Say - Lupe Fiasco (Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor)
The One Who Loves You The Most - Brett Dennan (So Much More)
The Celebration Wedding - (All The Hits So Far and other sundry items, but don’t expect too much)
Dreaming Wide Awake - Lizz Wright (Dreaming Wide Awake)

If they are organised friends and sometimes even if they are not, this same information has been ‘diarised’ a few days before and is, well… unremarkable and rarely revisited. “Meeting Jane for coffee” used to be confined to the pages of a filofax, now it is fodder for the facebooker.

Culture has taught us that advertisting need not be meaningful, it must just be pervasive and incessant,
and we have bought it. Bought what? Bought the air they sold to us, and after re-polluting it, resold it to whoever will believe our social networking proclamations.

Ok, so here’s the confession. Inside me there is a DJ trapped waiting to get out, I like radio, but on the real, I cant’ really find many shows I love, so here’s how it’s gonna work: From time to time I’ll post the play list here:

At the moment this is…
(1) Partly me spinning records for me, and partly me giving you the heads up on what we like sonically over here at TRANSTATIC.
(2)If you’d like to actually hear the set for yourself - holler.
(3) If enough people do (2) then we’ll put out the show, if not I’ll revert to (1:)

Session 1 (27/02/08)

Robot Rock / Oh Yeah - Daft Punk (Alive 2007)
Love Revolution - Lenny Kravitz (Love Revolution)
To know Him is to love Him - Amy Winehouse (Live session)
Wordplay - Jason Mraz (Mr A-Z.)
That’s the way of the world - Dwele (Interpretations)
1983 , Flying Lotus (1983)
The Hype, NSM - (Brownswood Bubblers)
Cryin Out - Trip Lee (If They Only Knew)
Hands Up - DJ Premier (Hip-Hop Instrumentals Vol. 3)
Brazillian Groove [Instrumental] - Jay Dee
The Chronicles (I Will Always Love H.E.R)
Not A Slave - J.R (Life By Stereo )
Every Step - Tawiah (iTunes Single of the week)

Yes, that is correct spelling, I really meant to say ‘daze’. Such is the euphoria after this weekend’s off-the-handle celebrations for the launch of record label and my life into its 26th orbit of the calendar. Was joined by the fabulous Abimaro for a joint b’day celebration that I won’t forget in a hurry. Great people, great vibe, nuff love. Big up’s to all the acts: hang-tight Poet Michaela who soldieried it all the way down from Brum to be there. Plus James Crooke, what can I say, ”dude!”, watch out for him, had the crowd pulling up his acoustic brit pop (not something you see every day) - such a dark horse he leaves charcoal hoof prints - trust. Asah Shabazz blessed the mic with some awesome flows, including the stellar ‘better now’.

In all, a beautiful start for TRANSTATIC. Thanks for showing out e’rybody, God willing we’ll do it all again in a couple months, don’t sleep.
