I know you’ve heard the adage, ‘watch what you eat’.  That can be hard to do when you have to balance attending class, studying, writing papers and managing the all-important college social life!  Don’t let the “Freshman 15″ (or as I affectionately call it the “College 15, 20, or 30″) get you!

How do you avoid that?  Do you carry around a food journal all day?  Do you commit every bite to memory?

I strive to ‘watch what I eat’, but by the end of the day I’ve forgotten about that afternoon Snickers I ate. Eeeek!

In addition to exercising, keeping a food log is a healthy practice.  Don’t worry about carrying around that food journal, there’s a fantastic website to aide you called TheDailyPlate.  It’s the perfect way to keep track of your eating from the comfort of your apartment at The Verge!

Have you ever kept a food journal?

The end of summer means the end of summer blockbusters!  The last on my list of must-see flicks hits theaters today, ‘The Switch‘.  This romantic comedy stars Jennifer Anniston and Jason Bateman, two of my favorites!  Check out showtimes around Durham and this hilarious trailer!  I can’t wait to see this movie!!!

Why pay retail for textbooks this semester when you can save some major cash following the below tips? We’re fortunate to attend college in the 21st century where we have more means of acquiring the required textbooks than just the campus book store. There are numerous resources out there to save some big bucks on textbooks.

1. Don’t Buy…Rent Your Textbooks: Chegg or Book Renter are outstanding sites for renting either new or used textbooks. Keep your eyes peeled for free shipping deals when you are shopping these sites!

2. Compare Used Book Prices: Visit Cheapest Textbooks and/or BIGWORDS to compare textbook prices. According to one of my favorite money-saving websites, Coupon Cravings, “You can also get BIGWORDS as a free iPhone app. This is a great app to have when you’re checking out the books you need in the bookstore to see if you can get them elsewhere for less.”
3. E-Books: Do you really need to carry around the actual book when you can obtain the digital version? If you own a Kindle or even to an iPhone or iPod Touch, CourseSmart might be a great resource for you.  You’ll find online versions of your textbooks and even  e-books! Coupon Cravings says, “Barnes & Noble also recently launched NOOKstudy for e-textbook downloads to a laptop.”

We are so excited that you have chosen to make The Verge your home. Here are a couple answers to your most frequently asked questions:

Q. When is move in?

A. Move-In is scheduled for August 14th at noon. Due to scheduled cleaning and maintainance there are no exceptions to this.

Q. What do I need to move in?

A. It depends on the individual. If you are planning to move in and pay your rent with a promissory note you need to be prepared to pay first months rent and provide adequate proof of financial aid dispursement with all necessary paperwork completed. Subsequently, no resident will be allowed to move in without their security deposits and pet fees paid.

Q. What is acceptable proof of financial aid disbursement?

A. The Verge requires proof of financial aid in documentation from the residents home university. This documentation must have an ACTUAL DATE that you will recieve the funds.

Q. What can I do to make the move-in process as easy as possible?

A. In order to simplify and make moving in painless, please make sure you have all of your necessary paperwork completed and in order to minimize confusion and conjestion, limit office entrance to lease holders alone.

The first day of classes at Duke are less than a month away? Where did the summer go!?

If you’ve taken a mental break for the summer from attending class, note taking, studying, and paper writing, then the following back-to-school tips might be helpful.

Brush up before the first day of classes!

• Time Management: Get a planner (I prefer to use my cell phone’s calendar) and organize your semester pronto!
• Try to resist the urge to slack off.  Sure the first few weeks of class aren’t as hard core as the remainder of the semester, but if you fall behind now, you’ll have to play ‘catch up’ when you’re busier.
• Start off the year with great attendance. (yes I know that sounds corny, but it’s important) The material you learn in the first few weeks may be essential to understanding material covered later in the semester.
