I’ve been jumping on one leg for three days since Kristi O’Meara (from The PatternBase blog) sent me an email telling me that 11 of my surface pattern designs will be included in her new book: ‘PATTERNBASE: A Book of Contemporary Textile & Surface Design’! “PATTERNBASE will be the first publication to be self-released by The PatternBase. This 250 page, full-colour book will showcase a collection of textile, surface and print designs from contemporary artists and designers around the globe, and will include spotlights and interviews from a number of artists working within the textile and fashion industries today.” There was a lot of competition as 467 artists and designers sent over 2,500 designs. Kristi is creating this book as a Kickstarter project and in only 1 month, she managed to raise more money than the amount pledged. This is all great news for us pattern lovers and a great example of how, if you want something badly enough, you can definitely make it happen! Well done Kristi and thank you for including me! Update: After 3 years of waiting in anticipation, the book has now been released by Thames & Hudson Publishing. You can order it on Amazon!

Some of my surface pattern designs went all the way to Indigo Paris as part of a collaboration with Believe Creative Studio. BCS is a studio in the Netherlands with 16 years experience creating graphic, textile and surface pattern designs for children. This year Believe decided to have some guest designers joining the Indigo adventure, creating designs for Believe’s collection. I took part in this amazing opportunity along with 15 other very talented designers! Indigo Paris [Fashion Edition] is a creative textile and surface design show. In their own words: “Indigo represents a unique and creative offer: designs, embroideries and appliqués, knits, fabrics, vintage, transfer paper, archives. Every edition from 150 to 180 international studios present their collections. Products for all markets and sectors: men, women, junior, children, infant, lingerie, swimwear, sportswear, accessories, knit, transfer paper.” If you want to read more about this collaboration and its participants, head over to my blog Pitter Pattern. I really can’t wait to do it again!

I have just finished a 5 weeks course called The Sellable Sketch run by Michelle Fifis from the Pattern Observer blog. Its goal is to teach you how to develop an “irresistible surface design collection” and have a full collection by the end of the course! These are some of the points the course teaches you: What elements lead to a successful print collection The importance of staying true to one’s natural style How to pick appropriate trends and inspiration sources for one’s target market How to develop a print from sketch to digital file Tips and tricks to developing a print colour palette How to use print scale to increase sales The best part is that you get to have live chats with Michelle where she gives you feedback and answers all the questions you might have. I really enjoyed it and completely recommend it!

Winner of ‘Gardens for Health’ contest

I’ve been selected as one of 2 winners of the Gardens for Health pattern competition run by the Pattern Observer blog! “Gardens for Health International is a wonderful organization that works in East Africa to provide agricultural assistance to those who struggle with chronic malnutrition. The founder, Emma Clippinger, has long dreamed of developing a signature “Gardens for Health” print to use on bags, dresses, napkins, and aprons…” The assignment was “to develop an original print that incorporates images that are important to Gardens for Health. Examples include: flowers or sunflowers, seeds, avocados, tomatoes, carrots, beets, eggplants, lettuce/cabbage, squash, sweet potato, broccoli — all things that they grow!” Update: Even though the competition stated that “the winner will receive their artwork printed on a variety of items that will be sold worldwide to support an amazing organization!”, it never really happened… The Gardens for Health founder (Emma Clippinger) never contacted me and after repeated attempts on my part to contact her, I decided to give up. What upsets me the most is not the fact that they didn’t follow through with their promises, but that they preferred not to show themselves and give an explanation. I consider this behaviour a lack of respect towards all of us, designers, that decided to give this competition a go.
