Q:* *What is blood? How much blood does a person have?* *A:* Blood is the
red coloured fluid flowing continuously in our body's circulatory system.
About 1/12th of the body weight of a healthy individual is blood. On an
average there are about 5 - 6 litres of blood present.

back carbon dioxide from the cells and tissues to be thrown out of body in
the form of exhaled air.
*(c**) White cells: *Mainly act as body scavengers and guards. They help in
the immune system of the body and act as defence forces of the body killing
the bacteria or any other organisms entering the body.
*(d)** Platelets: *Help in the clotting and coagulation of blood. We have
experienced in our life that whenever we get injured the bleeding stops
after a few minutes. This is brought about by a mechanism called clotting of
blood in which platelets plays a very vital role.

*Q:* *How is blood formed?* *A:* Blood consists of RBCs, WBCs, platelets
suspended in plasma. In early embryonic life blood cells are formed in liver
and spleen. But by the fifth month the Haemopoisis (i.e., formation of
blood.) occurs in bone marrow and lymphatic tissues. At birth the entire
bone marrow is red and active. Gradually as the child grows, the marrow
remains red only in the flat bones and vertebrae. The RBC, grannulocytes of
WBC and platelets are produced mainly by bone marrow. The lymphocytes,
monocytes, plasma cells are formed in the lymphoid and Reticulo Endothelial
tissues. The orderly proliferation of the cells in the bone marrow and their
release into circulation is carefully regulated according to the needs of
body. Every day, new blood cells are being produced in the bone marrow and
every day old cells are dying and being removed from the body.
Red blood cells have a life of 120 days and when it becomes old and senile
it is thrown out. White cells live for a few days and platelets for a few
hours. Thus daily new cells are added to the circulation and old are removed
from it.

*Q:* *What is haemoglobin?* *A:* Haemoglobin is a substance present in the
red cells. It is helpful in carrying oxygen and carbon dioxide. On an
average, in a healthy male it should be between 14 - 16 gm % and in a female
it should be about 12 - 14 gm %. This is also being daily synthesized and
the new is replacing the old stock.

groups. The first is called the ABO - grouping and the second type is called
Rh - grouping.
In the ABO - group there are four categories namely A Group, B Group, O
Group and AB Group.
In the Rh - Group either the individual is Rh-positive, or Rh-negative. Rh
is a factor called as Rhesus factor that has come to us from Rhesus monkeys.
Thus each and very human being will fall in one of the following groups.
*A positive or A negative
B positive or B negative
O positive or O negative
AB positive or AB negative *
There are also some sub groups as well as a few other classifications.

*Q:* *What is the importance of knowing the blood groups?* *A:* For all
practical and routine purposes, it is ideal to transfuse to the patient the
same group of blood which he belongs to. It is only under very dire
emergency that we take O group as universal donor and AB groups as universal
recipient. Under no circumstances O group can get any other blood except O.
Similarly A group patient cannot be given B group blood and vice versa.

*Q:* *Why is A group not given B group blood?* *A:* This is due to the
reason that, the blood of A Group people contains anti - B antibodies. In B
group people there are anti - An antibodies. If we give A group blood to a B
group patient, it is bound to be incompatible and will result in serious
consequences.

*Q:* *Why are Rh negative and Rh positive incompatible?* *A:* A patient
with Rh-negative blood cannot be given Rh-positive blood as the
antigen-antibody REACTIONS WILL RESULT IN SEVERE consequences.
In cases where a woman has Rh negative and her husband has Rh positive, the
first child with Rh positive may be normal. But subsequently the woman may
not conceive or may have repeated abortions. There may be intra uterine
fetal death. If the child born is alive, it will suffer from a fatal disease
called "Erythroblastosis Foetalis". Now mothers can be given an injection of
anti-D within 24 hours of the delivery of a Rh-positive child and thus
protect the next baby from this catastrophe.

*Q:* *What is a unit of blood?* *A:* Blood is collected in plastic bags
which contain a watery fluid which prevents blood from getting coagulated.
On an average we draw about 450 ml. of blood from a person, depending on the
weight of the donor. This blood, plus the amount of anti coagulant present
in the bottle or bag, is known as one unit of blood.

*Q:* *Can blood of animals be transfused to human beings?* *A:* Scientists
have tried a lot but so far they are not successful. Only the blood of a
human being can be transfused to a human patient.

*Q:* *How long can blood be stored?* *A:* Whole blood can be stored up to
35 days, when kept in CPDA anti coagulant solution and refrigerated at 2 - 4
deg C. But the demand is so great that blood hardly ever remains in storage
for so long and is used much before expiry.

*Q:* *Can we separate blood into its components?* *A:* Yes! Now with
technical advancements, we can make components of blood and store them. For
example, plasma can be separated from whole blood and stored up to one year
in frozen state at -80 deg C temperature or below. This is called Fresh
Frozen Plasma. Similarly there are other components like Platelet Rich
Plasma; Platelet Concentrate (can be stored as a life saving measure upto 5
days now at 22- 24 degrees C in a platelet incubator and agitator);
Cryoprecipitate (which is very useful in treating bleeding disorders due to
the deficiency of factor VIII and IX); Factor VIII and IX; Albumin, Globulin
and many others.
In most progressive blood banks more than 85 % of the blood collected is
converted into components and stored. This is because many patients do not
require whole blood. For example, a patient whose hemoglobin is low and is
therefore anemic, may just require Packed Cells i.e. only red cells; a
patient with burns may need more of plasma than cells; a patient with
hemophilia may require only Factor VIII.
Now with the advent of Cell-separators we can directly draw a particular
component from the donor, while rest of the blood constituents go back to
the donor.

49-O in Constitution of India - very useful

Did you know that there is a system in our constitution, as per the 1969 act, in section " 49-O" that a person can go to the polling booth, confirm his identity, get his finger marked and convey the presiding election officer that he doesn't want to vote anyone!

Yes such a feature is available, but obviously these leaders have never disclosed it. This is called "49-O". Why should you go and say " I VOTE NOBODY"... because, in a ward, if a candidate wins, say by 123 votes, and that particular ward has received "49-O" votes more than 123, then that polling will be cancelled and will have to be re-polled. Not only that, but the candidature of the contestants will be removed and they cannot contest the re-polling, since people had already expressed their decision on them. This would bring fear into parties and hence look for genuine candidates for their parties for election. This would change the way; of our whole political system.... it is seemingly surprising why the election commission has not revealed such a feature to the public.... Please spread this news to as many as you know... Seems to be a wonderful weapon against corrupt parties in India ... show your power, expressing your desire not to vote for anybody, is even more powerful than voting... so don't miss your chance. So either vote, or vote not to vote (vote 49-O) and pass this info on... Use your voting right for a better INDIA

15 Companies That Might Not Survive 2009

With consumers shutting their wallets and corporate revenues plunging, the business landscape may start to resemble a graveyard in 2009. Household names like Circuit City and Linens 'n Things have already perished. And chances are, those bankruptcies were just an early warning sign of a much broader epidemic.

Moody's Investors Service, for instance, predicts that the default rate on corporate bonds - which foretells bankruptcies - will be three times higher in 2009 than in 2008, and 15 times higher than in 2007. That could equate to 25 significant bankruptcies per month.

We examined ratings from Moody's and data from other sources to develop a short list of potential victims that ought to be familiar to most consumers. Many of these firms are in industries directly hit by the slowdown in consumer spending, such as retail, automotive, housing and entertainment.

But there are other common threads. Most of these firms have limited cash for a rainy day, and a lot of debt, with large interest payments due over the next year. In ordinary times, it might not be so hard to refinance loans, or get new ones, to help keep the cash flowing. But in an acute credit crunch it's a different story, and at companies where sales are down and going lower, skittish lenders may refuse to grant any more credit. It's a terrible time to be cash-poor.

That's why Moody's assigns most of these firms its lowest rating for short-term liquidity. And all the firms on this list have long-term debt that Moody's rates Caa or lower, which means the borrower is considered at least a "very high" credit risk.

Once a company defaults on its debt, or fails to make a payment, the next step is usually a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Some firms continue to operate while in Chapter 11, retaining many of their employees. Those firms often shed debt, restructure, and emerge from bankruptcy as healthier companies.

But it takes fresh financing to do that, and with money scarce, more bankrupt firms than usual are likely to liquidate - like Circuit City. That's why corporate failures are likely to be a major drag on the economy in 2009: In a liquidation, the entire workforce often gets axed, with little or no severance. That will only add to unemployment, which could hit 9 or even 10 percent by the end of the year.

It's possible that none of the firms on this list will liquidate, or even declare Chapter 11. Some may come up with unexpected revenue or creative financing that helps avert bankruptcy, while others could be purchased in whole or in part by creditors or other investors. But one way or another, the following 15 firms will probably look a lot different a year from now than they do today:

Rite Aid. (Ticker symbol: RAD; about 100,000 employees; 1-year stock-price decline: 92%). This drugstore chain tried to boost its performance by acquiring competitors Brooks and Eckerd in 2007. But there have been some nasty side effects, like a huge debt load that makes it the most leveraged drugstore chain in the U.S., according to Zacks Equity Research. That big retail investment came just as megadiscounter Wal-Mart was starting to sell prescription drugs, and consumers were starting to cut bank on spending. Management has twice lowered its outlook for 2009. Prognosis: Mounting losses, with no turnaround in sight.

Claire's Stores. (Privately owned; about 18,000 employees.) Leon Black's once-renowned private-equity firm, the Apollo Group, paid $3.1 billion for this trendy teen-focused accessory store in 2007, when buyout funds were bulging. But cash flow has been negative for much of the past year and analysts believe Claire's is close to defaulting on its debt. A horrible retail outlook for 2009 offers no relief, suggesting Claire's could follow Linens 'n Things - another Apollo purchase - and declare Chapter 11, possibly shuttering all of its 3,000-plus stores.

Chrysler. (Privately owned; about 55,000 employees). It's never a good sign when management insists the company is not going out of business, which is what CEO Bob Nardelli has been doing lately. Of the three Detroit automakers, Chrysler is the most endangered, with a product portfolio that's overreliant on gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs and almost totally devoid of compelling small cars. A recent deal with Fiat seems dubious, since the Italian automaker doesn't have to pony up any money, and Chrysler desperately needs cash. The company is quickly burning through $4 billion in government bailout money, and with car sales down 40 percent from recent peaks, Chrysler may be the weakling that can't cut it in tough times.

Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group. (DTG; about 7,000 employees; stock down 95%). This car-rental company is a small player compared to Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis Budget. It's also more reliant on leisure travelers, and therefore more susceptible to a downturn as consumers cut spending. Dollar Thrifty is also closely tied to Chrysler, which supplies 80 percent of its fleet. Moody's predicts that if Chrysler declares Chapter 11, Dollar Thrifty would suffer deeply as well.

Realogy Corp. (Privately owned; about 13,000 employees). It's the biggest real-estate brokerage firm in the country, but that's a bad thing when there are double-digit declines in both sales and prices, as there were in 2009. Realogy, which includes the Coldwell Banker, ERA, and Sotheby's franchises, also carries a high debt load, dating to its purchase by the Apollo Group in 2007 - the very moment when the housing market was starting to invert from a soaring ride into a sickening nosedive. Realogy has been trying to refinance much of its debt, prompting lawsuits. One deal was denied by a judge in December, reducing the firm's already tight wiggle room.

Station Casinos. (Privately owned, about 14,000 employees). Las Vegas has already been creamed by a biblical real-estate bust, and now it may face the loss of its home-grown gambling joints, too. Station - which runs 15 casinos off the strip that cater to locals - recently failed to make a key interest payment, which is often one of the last steps before a Chapter 11 filing. For once, the house seems likely to lose.

Loehmann's Capital Corp. (Privately owned; about 1,500 employees). This clothing chain has the right formula for lean times, offering women's clothing at discount prices. But the consumer pullback is hitting just about every retailer, and Loehmann's has a lot less cash to ride out a drought than competitors like Nordstrom Rack and TJ Maxx. If Loehmann's doesn't get additional financing in 2009 - a dicey proposition, given skyrocketing unemployment and plunging spending - the chain could run out of cash.

Sbarro. (Privately owned; about 5,500 employees). It's not the pizza that's the problem. Many of this chain's 1,100 storefronts are in malls, which is a double whammy: Traffic is down, since consumers have put away their wallets. Sbarro can't really boost revenue by adding a breakfast or late-night menu, like other chains have done. And competitors like Domino's and Pizza Hut have less debt and stronger cash flow, which could intensify pressure on Sbarro as key debt payments come due in 2009.

Six Flags. (SIX; about 30,000 employees; stock down 84%). This theme-park operator has been losing money for several years, and selling off properties to try to pay down debt and get back into the black. But the ride may end prematurely. Moody's expects cash flow to be negative in 2009, and if consumers aren't spending during the peak summer season, that could imperil the company's ability to pay debts coming due later this year and in 2010.

Blockbuster. (BBI; about 60,000 employees; stock down 57%). The video-rental chain has burned cash while trying to figure out how to maximize fees without alienating customers. Its operating income has started to improve just as consumers are cutting back, even on movies. Video stores in general are under pressure as they compete with cable and Internet operators offering the same titles. A key test of Blockbuster's viability will come when two credit lines expire in August. One possible outcome, according to Valueline, is that investors take the company private and then go public again when market conditions are better.

Krispy Kreme. (KKD; about 4,000 employees; stock down 50%). The donuts might be good, but Krispy Kreme overestimated Americans' appetite - and that's saying something. This chain overexpanded during the donut heyday of the 1990s - taking on a lot of debt - and now requires high volumes to meet expenses and interest payments. The company has cut costs and closed underperforming stores, but still hasn't earned an operating profit in three years. And now that consumers are cutting back on everything, such improvements may fail to offset top-line declines, leading Krispy Kreme to seek some kind of relief from lenders over the next year.

Landry's Restaurants. (LNY; about 17,000 employees; stock down 66%). This restaurant chain, which operates Chart House, Rainforest Café, and other eateries, needs $400 million in new financing to finalize a buyout deal dating to last June. If lenders come through, the company should have enough cash to ride out the recession. But at least two banks have already balked, leading to downgrades of the company's debt and the prospect of a cash-flow crunch.

Sirius Satellite Radio. (SIRI - parent company; about 1,000 employees; stock down 96%). The music rocks, but satellite radio has yet to be profitable, and huge contracts for performers like Howard Stern are looking unsustainable. Sirius is one of two satellite-radio services owned by parent company Sirius XM, which was formed when Sirius and XM merged last year. So far, the merger hasn't generated the savings needed to make the company profitable, and Moody's thinks there's a "high likelihood" that Sirius will fail to repay or refinance its debt in 2009. One outcome could be a takeover, at distressed prices, by other firms active in the satellite business.

Trump Entertainment Resorts Holdings. (TRMP; about 9,500 employees; stock down 94%). The casino company made famous by The Donald has received several extensions on interest payments, while it tries to sell at least one of its Atlantic City properties and pay down a stack of debt. But with casino buyers scarce, competition circling, and gamblers nursing their losses from the recession, Trump Entertainment may face long odds of skirting bankruptcy.

BearingPoint. (BGPT; about 16,000 employees; stock down 21%). This Virginia-based consulting firm, spun out of KPMG in 2001, is struggling to solve its own operating problems. The firm has consistently lost money, revenue has been falling, and management stopped issuing earnings guidance in 2008. Stable government contracts generate about 30 percent of the firm's business, but the firm may sell other divisions to help pay off debt. With a key interest payment due in April, management needs to hustle - or devise its own exit strategy.

11 arrested, indicted in multi-state visa fraud operation

DES MOINES, Iowa - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents
arrested 11 individuals in six states Wednesday as part of an investigation
into suspected visa and mail fraud. Matthew G. Whitaker, U.S. Attorney for
the Southern District of Iowa, announced the operation, which was carried
out by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in Iowa,
California, Massachusetts, Texas, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and New Jersey.

Vision Systems Group Inc., a New Jersey Domestic Profit Corporation with a
branch office in Coon Rapids, Iowa, was also indicted in a 10-count federal
indictment that included one count of conspiracy, eight counts of mail
fraud, and one count of 'Notice of Forfeiture' in the amount of $7.4
million.

"Today's multi-state enforcement action is the result of an extensive,
ongoing investigation into suspected H-1B visa fraud, mail fraud, and
conspiracy," said U.S. Attorney Whitaker. "Dubbed "Operation Pacific
Vision," this investigation is the result of outstanding cooperation and
collaboration among law enforcement agencies at all levels of government."

The investigation is being conducted by ICE in collaboration with U.S.
Citizenship and Immigration Services' Fraud Detection and National Security
Division (FDNS); U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Inspector General;
U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS); U.S. Department of State; Social
Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General, and is supported
by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

"This case highlights the Department of Homeland Security's commitment to
identifying and dismantling visa fraud schemes," said Homeland Security
Acting Assistant Secretary for ICE John P. Torres. "Ensuring the integrity
of our nation's legal immigration system is a top priority for ICE."

"This is a prime example of how the Department of Homeland Security
identifies fraud," said Michael Aytes, USCIS's acting deputy director. "Our
adjudication officers can spot inconsistencies during the application
process that ultimately led to the successful outcome we're seeing today.
Visa fraud undermines the integrity of the immigration system and I'm proud
that our officers have helped to ensure that the American people and our
customers can continue to depend on a reliable system."

Federal authorities, with assistance from state and local law enforcement,
served search warrants at addresses in Urbandale and Clive, Iowa; in Santa
Clara, Rancho Cucamonga and Arcadia, Calif.; and in South Plainfield, N.J.

This investigation involves companies that sponsor primarily H-1B
non-immigrants, or temporary workers in specialty occupations that require a
particular expertise. The companies that are the subject of this
investigation have asserted that the foreign workers have been brought to
the U.S. to fill existing vacancies. However, the companies allegedly have
not always had jobs available for these workers, thereby placing them in
non-pay status after they arrive in the United States. In some cases, the
foreign workers have allegedly been placed in jobs and locations not
previously certified by the Department of Labor, displacing qualified
American workers and violating prevailing wage laws.

The companies and foreign workers have allegedly submitted false statements
and documents in support of their visa petitions. The false statements and
documents were mailed or wired to state and federal agencies in support of
the visa applications. The companies are suspected of visa fraud, mail
fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.

"The foreign labor certification programs are designed to permit U.S.
employers to hire foreign workers to fill jobs essential to American
businesses," said Daniel R. Petrole, deputy inspector general, U.S.
Department of Labor. "Our agency remains resolute in its commitment with its
law enforcement partners to investigate fraud committed against these
Department of Labor programs."

U.S. businesses use the H-1B program to employ foreign workers in specialty
occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise in specialized
fields, such as scientists, engineers, or computer programmers. As part of
the H-1B program, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the
Department of Labor (DOL) require U.S. employers to meet specific labor
conditions to ensure that American workers are not adversely impacted, while
the DOL's Wage and Hour Division safeguards the treatment and compensation
of H-1B workers. Congress sets a numerical cap for the admission of skilled
workers into the U.S. The current H-1B cap is set at 65,000 visas per fiscal
year. H-1B aliens can work in the United States for three years, with an
option for an additional three years (for a maximum of six years).

Those arrested Wednesday by ICE agents include:

Shiva Neeli, arrested in Boston, Mass.; charged with conspiracy and mail
fraud.
Ramakrishna Maguluri, arrested in Atlanta, Ga.; charged with conspiracy and
mail fraud.
Villiappan Subbaiah, arrested in Dallas, Texas; charged with conspiracy and
mail fraud.
Suresh Pola, arrested in Pennsylvania; charged with conspiracy and mail
fraud.
Vishnu Reddy, arrested in Los Angeles, Calif.; charged with conspiracy, mail
fraud and wire fraud.
Chockalingam Palaniappan, arrested in San Jose, Calif.; charged with
conspiracy, mail fraud and wire fraud.
Vijay Myneni, arrested in San Jose, Calif.; charged with conspiracy and mail
fraud.
Venkata Guduru, arrested in New Jersey; charged with conspiracy and mail
fraud.
Praveen Andapally, arrested in New Jersey; charged with conspiracy, mail
fraud, wire fraud, and making false statements in an immigration matter.
Amit Justa, arrested in New Jersey; charged with conspiracy and mail fraud.
Karambir Yadav, arrested in Louisville, Ky.; charged with conspiracy and
mail fraud.
The maximum sentence for conspiracy is five years in prison and a $250,000
fine. The maximum sentence for mail fraud is 20 years in prison and a
$250,000 fine. The maximum sentence for wire fraud is 20 years in prison and
a $250,000 fine. The maximum sentence for making a false statement in an
immigration matter is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The Department of Homeland Security has a multifaceted approach to detecting
and investigating immigration and benefit fraud. ICE's Document and Benefit
Fraud Task Forces were created in March 2006 to target and dismantle
criminal organizations that threaten national security and public safety and
close vulnerabilities in the immigration process. USCIS created the Fraud
Detection and National Security Division (FDNS) to enhance the integrity of
the immigration systems and to identify persons who pose a threat to
national security or public safety. Cooperation between FDNS and ICE has
helped to increase the incidence of enforcement actions. More information on
these initiatives is available at www.ice.gov and www.uscis.gov.

tip 1:

grate 2' piece of cucumber. Squeeze through a muslin cloth and extract the juice. Dip cotton pads in this and place on eyelids. Relax for 15 minutes.

Tip 2:

take 1 tspn tomato pulp,1 pinch of turmeric powder â½ tspn of limejuice and 1 tspn of gram flour. Make a paste and apply gently. Remove gently with moist cotton pads after â½ an hour.

Tip 3:

soak 2 almonds overnight. Peel and grind to a smooth paste. Add a few drops of limejuice to this apply for 20-25 minutes. This should be followed daily and gradually after 2 weeks, every 3rd day and finally when the difference is visible, to once aeek. A paste of almonds can be stored in a clean bottle in the 'fridge.

apply a paste made by crushing a handful of mint leaves.

Causes:

The aggravation of kapha due to the intake of cold food, drinks and fried stuff etc causes cough. Seasonal changes is also one of the reasons for cough Improper digestion of food transforms into a mucus toxin (Ama) and this circulates through the body and reaches the respiratory system, where it causes colds and coughs.

Remedies:

The body should be kept warm - especially the feet, chest, throat and head. Sweating is very helpful.
Take half a teaspoon of ginger juice with half a teaspoon of honey, three times a day (morning, noon and night). In winter, warm the mixture by mixing a teaspoon of warm water in it.

Mix half a cup of warm water with one teaspoon of lemon juice and one teaspoon of honey.
Dosage: Take several times a day.
In cases of dry cough (especially during the night), peel a small piece of fresh ginger. Sprinkle some salt on it and chew.
Take equal amounts of cardamom, ginger powder, black pepper and cinnamon (1 teaspoon each). Add sugar equal to the total amount of mixture and grind to make a fine powder.

Dosage: Take half a teaspoon twice daily, with honey or warm water after meals.
In cases of sore throat, a clove or two cardamoms or a few raisins can be chewed.Gargling with warm salty water two to three times a day is also beneficial.

Reasons for bad dreams, want to know why we get bad dreams

No one likes being jolted awake from a deep sleep, especially when what riled you up was an assailant, a snake in the bed, or being engulfed by flames. Bad dreams—or worse, nightmares—aren’t just annoying; when reoccurring, they can disrupt a good night’s sleep, and sometimes, life.

On the spectrum of dreams, missing an important exam or showing up naked to work pales in comparison to nightmares, which are defined as bad dreams that wake the sleeper. They occur during rapid eye movement (REM) late in the evening and because we jerk awake during them, we usually remember all too clearly the fear, anxiety, and horrors.

Though more common among children, nightmares and bad dreams happen throughout life. But is there anything we can do to prevent the bad things from creeping into our sleep?

1. Anxiety and Stress
Anxiety and stress, often as the result of a traumatic life event, are sometimes the cause of nightmares and bad dreams. According to the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD), a major surgery or illness, grieving over the loss of a loved one, and suffering or witnessing an assault or major accident can trigger bad dreams and nightmares. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is also a common cause of recurrent nightmares.
Not all nightmare triggers have to be traumatic, however. Everyday stressors, such as job or financial anxiety, or major life transitions such as moving or divorce, can also cause nightmares.

2. Spicy Foods
When and what we eat may affect our nighttime rest, if not our tendency toward bad dreams. A small study published in the International Journal of Psychophysiology had a group of healthy men eat spicy meals before bed on some evenings and compared their quality of sleep on nights where they had non-spiced meals. On the spicy nights, the subjects spent more time awake and had poorer quality sleep. The explanation is that spicy food can elevate body temperatures and thus disrupt sleep. This may also be the reason why some people report bad dreams when they eat too close to bedtime. Though few studies have looked at it, eating close to bedtime increases metabolism and brain activity and may prompt bad dreams or nightmares.

3. Fat Content of Food
Though far from conclusive, some research has indicated that the more high-fat food you consume during the day, the greater the chance that the amount and quality of your sleep may suffer. A small study published in 2007 in Psychological Reports found that the dreams of people who ate a high amount of organic food
differed from those who ate “junk foods.” The authors hypothesize that certain foods may negatively influence dreaming.

4. Alcohol
Though alcohol is a depressant that will help you fall asleep in the short term, once its effects wear off, it can cause you to wake up prematurely. Excess consumption can also lead to nightmares and bad sleep; nightmares are also a common occurrence for those going through alcohol withdrawal.

5. Drugs
Some drugs, including antidepressants, barbiturates, and narcotics, can cause nightmares as a side effect. For instance, a 2008 study published in the journal Pyschopharmacology looked at ketamine, a drug used in anesthesia and recreationally, and found that compared with a placebo, ketamine use resulted in more dream unpleasantness and increased the incidence of bad dreams. Similarly, anyone who has traveled to a country where malaria is endemic may have taken Lariam and had some interesting nightmares associated with it. Nightmares usually cease once the drug is cleared from the system.

6. Illness
Illnesses that include fever, such as the flu, can often trigger nightmares. And other sleeping disorders, including apnea and narcolepsy, may also increase the incidence of bad dreams and nightmares.

While bad dreams and nightmares are considered normal responses in dealing with everyday experiences, the IASD recommends consultation with a therapist if they last in intensity and severity. But trying to eliminate these six factors first may be the best place to start in your quest to sweeten your dreams and chase the nighttime demons away.

A Violinist in the Metro

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats average $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an appropriate hour:

There was once a learned scientist. After a lot of practice and efforts, he developed a formula and learned the art of reproducing himself. He did it so perfectly that it was impossible to tell the reproduction from the original.

One day while doing his research, he realized that the Angel of Death was searching for him. In order to remain immortal he reproduced a dozen copies of himself. The reproduction was so meticulous that all of them looked exactly like him. Now when this Angel of Death came down, he was at a loss to know which of the thirteen before him was the original scientist, and confused, he left them all alone and returned back to heaven. But, not for long, for being an expert in human nature, the Angel came up with a clever idea.

He said to the scientist addressing all thirteen of them, "Sir, you must be a genius to have succeeded in making such perfect reproduction formula of yourself. However, I have discovered a flaw in your work, just one tiny little flaw." The scientist immediately jumped out and shouted, "Impossible! where is the flaw?" "Right here" said the Angel, as he picked up the scientist from among the reproductions and carried him off. The whole purpose of the scientist and his formula of reproduction failed as he could not control his pride and lost his life.

So while one's Knowledge and Skills takes one to the top of the ladder and makes one successful, however the three letter word "EGO" can pull one down immediately. Let go one's Ego.

TCS to increase working hours, may freeze variable pay

KOLKATA: It’s official now. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country’s biggest software company in terms of sales, may freeze variable pay to

its over 1 lakh employees as part of a string of cost-management initiatives to cope with the pangs of the global meltdown. The company has also decided to increase employee working hours from April 1, 2009, to 45 hours per week from the present 40 hours that every TCSer needs to clock each week. This was indicated by TCS chief executive officer & managing director S. Ramadorai here on on Thursday.

"In a bid to rein in total manpower costs and spruce up employee efficiency and productivity levels, TCS will take a relook at its performance-linked variable pay practices. Variable compensation payout accounts for 7.5-to-8% of our revenues and this will now be reviewed," said Mr Ramadorai. Manpower costs account for 53% of TCS’s total costs.

Elaborating on other initiaitives to beef up internal efficiences, Mr Ramadorai also confirmed that TCS is increasing employee working hours to 45 hours a week from the present 40 hours per week level. "We believe the additional five hours can be effectively used to upgrade employee skills wherever necessary," said Mr Ramadorai.

Incidentally, the variable component of a TCS employee’s salary is linked to the performance of the company, the business unit of the individual and the individual’s performance. At present, it ranges between 20-to-35% of an employee’s gross salary. Comprising of distinct `company’ and `employee’ components, the variable allowance payment to each TCS employee happens on quarterly and monthly basis respectively, said a TCS official. More importantly, the variable pay increases with seniority.

The latest developments come at a time when TCS is under increasing pressure from global clients to reduce its cost of service delivery and is even losing clients who are trying to drive a hard bargain. "I cannot share client specifics. But it’s true that we have lost some clients. One client, for instance, demanded a 70% discount which was simply unsustainable," said Mr Ramadorai, in response to a specific query.

Dwelling on TCS’s plans to unlock internal efficiencies in times when the company was experiencing muted growth, Mr Ramadorai said: "Our capex was at Rs 1400 crore in 2008-09. You can now expect our future infrastructure-related spends to either get delayed or reduced. They will be rationalised based on real-time decisions once we take a call on the infrastructure budgets for the next fiscal.

TCS managing director S. Ramadorai, however, is unwilling to confirm whether the company’s Rajarhat software campus rollout will hit a roadblock in the backdrop of the company’s decision to cutback future infrastructure-related spends.
Not too long ago, TCS had indicated plans to unveil a spate of cost management initiatives that included ways to rationalise or consolidate TCS’s infrastructure globally to save costs. Other measures recommended were saving on energy costs through efficiency programs and optimising on travel and communication costs. The TCS management had also indicated that it was re-examining its capex program to conserve cash in the current volatile environment.

Short Life Story Of Sri Ramakrishna

Sri Ramakrishna was born on 18 February 1836 in the village of Kamarpukur about sixty miles northwest of Kolkata. His parents, Kshudiram Chattopadhyaya and Chandramani Devi, were poor but very pious and virtuous. As a child, Ramakrishna (his childhood name was Gadadhar) was dearly loved by the villagers. From early days, he was disinclined towards formal education and worldly affairs. He was, however, a talented boy, and could sing and paint well. He was fond of serving holy men and listening to their discourses. He was also very often found to be absorbed in spiritual moods. At the age of six, he experienced the first ecstasy while watching a flight of white cranes moving against the background of black clouds. This tendency to enter into ecstasy intensified with age. His father's death when he was seven years old served only to deepen his introspection and increase his detachment from the world.

As a Priest at Dakshineswar Temple

When Sri Ramakrishna was sixteen, his brother Ramkumar took him to Kolkata to assist him in his priestly profession. In 1855 the Kali Temple at Dakshineswar built by Rani Rasmani was consecrated and Ramkumar became the chief priest in that temple. When he died a few months later, Ramakrishna was appointed the priest. Ramakrishna developed intense devotion to Mother Kali and spent hours in loving adoration of her image, forgetting the rituals of priestly duties. His intense longing culminated in the vision of Mother Kali as boundless effulgence engulfing everything around him.

Sri Ramakrishna' s God-intoxicated state alarmed his relatives in Kamarpukur and they got him married to Saradamani, a girl from the neighbouring village of Jayrambati. Unaffected by the marriage, Sri Ramakrishna plunged into even more intense spiritual practices. Impelled by a strong inner urge to experience different aspects of God he followed, with the help of a series of Gurus, the various paths described in the Hindu scriptures, and realized God through each of them. The first teacher to appear at Dakshineswar (in 1861) was a remarkable woman known as Bhairavi Brahmani who was an advanced spiritual adept, well versed in scriptures. With her help Sri Ramakrishna practised various difficult disciplines of the Tantrik path, and attained success in all of them. Three years later came a wandering monk by name Totapuri, under whose guidance Sri Ramakrishna attained Nirvikalpa Samadhi, the highest spiritual experience mentioned in the Hindu
scriptures. He remained in that state of non-dual existence for six months without the least awareness of even his own body. In this way, Sri Ramakrishna relived the entire range of spiritual experiences of more than three thousand years of Hindu religion.

Following Other Faiths

With his unquenchable thirst for God, Sri Ramakrishna broke the frontiers of Hinduism, glided through the paths of Islam and Christianity, and attained the highest realization through each of them in a short span of time. He looked upon Jesus and Buddha as incarnations of God, and venerated the ten Sikh Gurus. He expressed the quintessence of his twelve-year- long spiritual realizations in a simple dictum: Yato mat, tato path As many faiths, so many paths. He now habitually lived in an exalted state of consciousness in which he saw God in all beings.

Worshipping His Wife

In 1872, his wife Sarada, now nineteen years old, came from the village to meet him. He received her cordially, and taught her how to attend to household duties and at the same time lead an intensely spiritual life. One night he worshipped her as the Divine Mother in his room at the Dakshineswar temple. Although Sarada continued to stay with him, they lived immaculately pure lives, and their marital relationship was purely spiritual. It should be mentioned here that Sri Ramakrishna had been ordained a Sannyasin (Hindu monk), and he observed the basic vows of a monk to perfection. But outwardly he lived like a lay man, humble, loving and with childlike simplicity. During Sri Ramakrishna' s stay at Dakshineswar, Rani Rasmani first acted as his patron. After her death, her son-in-law Mathur Nath Biswas took care of his needs.

Contact with Some Notables

Sri Ramakrishna' s name as an illumined saint began to spread. Mathur once convened an assembly of scholars, and they declared him to be not an ordinary human being but the Avatar of the Modern Age. In those days the socio-religious movement known as Brahmo Samaj, founded by Raja Ram Mohan Roy, was at the height of popularity in Bengal. Sri Ramakrishna came into contact with several leaders and members of Brahmo Samaj and exerted much influence on them. His teaching on harmony of religions attracted people belonging to different denominations, and Dakshineswar became a veritable Parliament of Religions.

Coming of the Devotees

As bees swarm around a fully blossomed flower, devotees now started coming to Sri Ramakrishna. He divided them into two categories. The first one consisted of householders. He taught them how to realize God while living in the world and discharging their family duties. The other more important category was a band of educated youths, mostly from the middle class families of Bengal, whom he trained to become monks and to be the torchbearers of his message to mankind. The foremost among them was Narendranath, who years later, as Swami Vivekananda, carried the universal message of Vedanta to different parts of the world, revitalized Hinduism, and awakened the soul of India.

The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna

Sri Ramakrishna did not write any book, nor did he deliver public lectures. Instead, he chose to speak in a simple language using parables and metaphors by way of illustration, drawn from the observation of nature and ordinary things of daily use. His conversations were charming and attracted the cultural elite of Bengal. These conversations were noted down by his disciple Mahendranath Gupta who published them in the form of a book, Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita in Bengali. Its English rendering, The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, was released in 1942; it continues to be increasingly popular to this day on account of its universal appeal and relevance.

Last Days

The intensity of his spiritual life and untiring spiritual ministration to the endless stream of seekers told on Sri Ramakrishna' s health. He developed cancer of the throat in 1885. He was shifted to a spacious suburban villa where his young disciples nursed him day and night. He instilled in them love for one another, and thus laid the foundation for the future monastic brotherhood known as Ramakrishna Math. In the small hours of 16 August 1886 Sri Ramakrishna gave up his physical body, uttering the name of the Divine Mother, and passed into Eternity.

Beginnings of a Monastic Order

Sri Ramakrishna instilled in these young men the spirit of renunciation and brotherly love for one another. One day he distributed ochre robes among them and sent them out to beg food. In this way he himself laid the foundation for a new monastic order. He gave specific instructions to Narendra about the formation of the new monastic Order. In the small hours of 16 August 1886 Sri Ramakrishna gave up his mortal body.
After the Master’s passing, fifteen of his young disciples (one more joined them later) began to live together in a dilapidated building at Baranagar in North Kolkata. Under the leadership of Narendra, they formed a new monastic brotherhood, and in 1887 they took the formal vows of sannyasa, thereby assuming new names. Narendra now became Swami Vivekananda (although this name was actually assumed much later.)

One lakh Indians will return from U.S. in next 3-5 years

Washington: As many as 100,000 Indians and an equal number of Chinese will return to their native countries in the next three to five years, a move that will greatly boost their economies and undermine technological innovation in America, a new U.S. study warns.

The study on immigration by a team at Duke, Harvard and Berkeley universities led by Vivek Wadhwa, an Indian-American technology entrepreneur turned academic, says "America's loss is the world's gain".

There are no hard numbers available on how many have returned, but anecdotal evidence shows that this is in the tens of thousands, says Wadhwa, executive-in-residence for the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University and fellow at the Labour and Worklife Programme at Harvard Law School.

"With the economic downturn, my guess is that we'll have over 100,000 Indians and as many Chinese return home over the next three-five years," says Wadhwa. "This flood of western educated and skilled talent will greatly boost the economies of India and China and strengthen their competitiveness.

"India is already becoming a global hub for R&D. This will allow it to branch into many new areas and will accelerate the trend," he says.

"The US has always had the luxury of being arrogant about immigration because it has been the strongest magnet for the world's best and brightest," but as the study shows "there are other strong magnets now".

"We are effectively exporting our economic stimulus. Policies like those which the US just enacted which prevents some banks from hiring foreign workers will have the opposite effect from what they intended - they will send jobs abroad and scare away top talent," Wadhwa said.

The study released Monday Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, based in Kansas City, Montana, indicates placing limits on foreign workers in the US is not the answer to America's rising unemployment rate and may undermine efforts to spur technological innovation.

"A substantial number of highly skilled immigrants have started returning to their home countries in recent years, draining a key source of brain power and innovation," said Robert E. Litan, vice president of Research and Policy at the Kauffman Foundation.

"We wanted to know what is encouraging this much-needed economic growth engine to leave our country, thereby sending entrepreneurship and economic stimulus to places like Bangalore and Beijing."

The report builds on an earlier Kauffman Foundation report by Wadhwa documenting a queue of one million H-1B holders and their families anxiously awaiting longer-term work visas and growing frustrated with the immigration process.

Until recently, America has been the prime destination for the world's best and brightest immigrants.

"Immigrants have made tremendous personal sacrifices," said Wadhwa. "They would leave behind relatives and friends and accept second-tier status in American society.

"Now countries like India and China are providing equal career opportunities and a better quality of life. So the most highly educated and skilled are often returning home."

This Story is about a man who once upon a time was selling Hotdogs by the roadside.

He was illiterate, so he never read newspapers.
He was hard of hearing, so he never listened to the radio.
His eyes were weak, so he never watched television.
But enthusiastically, he sold lots of hotdogs.
He was smart enough to offer some attractive schemes to increase his sales.
His sales and profit went up.
He ordered more a more raw material and buns and use to sale more.
He recruited few more supporting staff to serve more customers.
He started offering home deliveries. Eventually he got himself a bigger and better stove.
As his business was growing, the son, who had recently graduated from College, joined his father.
Then something strange happened.
The son asked, "Dad, aren't you aware of the great recession that is coming our way?"
The father replied, "No, but tell me about it." The son said, "The international situation is terrible.
The domestic situation is even worse. We should be prepared for the coming bad times.."
The man thought that since his son had been to college, read the papers, listened to the radio and watched TV.
He ought to know and his advice should not be taken lightly.
So the next day onwards, the father cut down the his raw material order and buns, took down the colorful signboard,
removed all the special schemes he was offering to the customers and was no longer as enthusiastic.
He reduced his staff strength by giving layoffs.
Very soon, fewer and fewer people bothered to stop at his hotdog stand.
And his sales started coming down rapidly, same is the profit.
The father said to his son, "Son, you were right".
"We are in the middle of a recession and crisis. I am glad you warned me ahead of time."

Moral of The Story: It's all in your MIND! And we actually FUEL this recession much more than we think we do!
