Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. The School of Arts, Design and Architecture is an institution of higher education for design, media, architecture, film, scenography, art education and art. The new school, formed in a merger of the School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture of the School of Engineering, will carry forward the internationally recognized expertise created by its predecessors.
The Department of Film, Television and Scenography, ELO, consists of two degree programs: film and television, and scenography (see http://elo.aalto.fi/en/). The Degree Program of Film and Television provides teaching in seven areas of specialization: directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, sound design, and documentary film-making. The Degree Program of Scenography offers three areas of specialization: production design, stage design and costume design. In addition, the Department collaborates closely with the Theatre Academy Helsinki and with other higher education institutions specialized in arts. The open position relates to the Degree Program of Scenography, Costume Design specialization.

The Department of Film, Television and Scenography is looking for a

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER in the field of Costume Design

for a 2-year-period starting on September 1st 2012 or as agreed.

The field of research is Costume Design. Costume design is one of the three majors in the undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the Degree Programme in Scenography, and it is also one of the new research fields of the department. Costume design courses are also offered to students from various backgrounds, such as fashion and textiles, as well as scenography and lighting. Research in the department is interdisciplinary, and doctoral students represent various disciplines. There is at the moment one professor and one lecturer specialized in the field of costume design, as well as a varying number of visiting lecturers working in different projects.

The purpose of postdoctoral research is to support and strengthen research at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography, as well as to contribute to new approaches in teaching. Postdoctoral researcher’s duties include research and teaching related to the research field both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Postdoctoral researchers also participate in the preparation of research projects and search for funding, including writing grant proposals. Administrative duties in the development of research and teaching can also be part of the job description.

An expeditiously and successfully gained doctoral degree in a relevant research field is required. The applicants are expected to demonstrate artistic and/or research experience in the field of costume and performance. Applicants’ research potential and merits will be given particular emphasis during the selection process. Teaching experience would also be an advantage. The task requires fluent skills in the use of English language: the working language will be English. The salary is determined by the salary system of Aalto University.
