He flew L-4 and L-5 aircraft with the 93rd Infantry Division seeing combat in the Solomons Islands, New Guinea and the Philippines.  Surviving a crash landing behind Japanese lines, he led his observer to safety despite suffering serious injuries to both knees.</description>
