Locum Vet Employment Status:

Should you register yourself as being self-employed, become a limited company, or work for an umbrella company that
is paid by the practice and then pays you less income tax and a fee. This is an important decision since it determines how you pay income tax, and in general terms a limited company is your most profitable option.

Personal Liability Insurance:

As a locum vet, you are not covered by the practice insurance policy should
something go wrong or you make a professional mistake. You must purchase your own personal liability insurance, and the veterinary recruitment agency can advise you on this.

UK Work Permits:

If you are not a UK citizen your veterinary recruitment agency should offer advice on how to qualify to work and live in the UK. If they do not, then you should try another agency because this is very important information. You should also be provided with details of RCVS registration and what veterinary nurses must do to qualify to work in the UK as a permanent or locum vet nurse.

Personal Needs:

You will need you own car if you decide to work as a locum. However, you will also need accommodation and this should
always be in your mind when responding to veterinary job vacancies. Your recruitment agency will likely help you out with this, and might even be able to negotiate accommodation at reduced prices, and possibly even a practice vehicle if the vet job is in a rural area

Veterinary Job Vacancies:

This is why such agencies exist – to find and offer you permanent or locum vet jobs to suit your needs and qualifications. A good veterinary recruitment agency will be aware of your qualifications, experience and preferences with regard to
geographical location and preferred type of work or speciality.

Finding veterinary job vacancies in the UK is not always easy, but it makes sense to use a veterinary recruitment agency for permanent or locum vet work, because rather than you having to apply to multiple advertisements, the agency will offer you a list of vacancies that meet your needs. That’s an easier and better way of finding veterinary work in the UK, and you also get all that valuable information.

Summary:

Finding veterinary job vacancies is not always a simple task, whether you are seeking permanent or locum vet work. Veterinary recruitment agencies can help you in many ways, and can offer useful tax and insurance information for locums as well as finding you the ideals job to match your experience and preferred type of work.

Finding Veterinary Job Vacancies Using Veterinary Recruitment Agencies

Finding veterinary job vacancies is not easy these days, and using veterinary recruitment agencies will likely give you the best chance of securing the type of work you are looking for, particularly if this is a locum vet job.

We shall have a look here at the various methods of finding veterinary job vacancies in the UK, and discuss which is most likely to secure you the type of work you are looking for. A great deal depends upon whether you are seeking a permanent position with a practice, or locum vet work, although many vets who come the UK from abroad tend to prefer to work as a locum vet for a number of reasons.

Perhaps they want to know more about the UK before deciding on a particular location, and by taking locum vet work around the UK they can do this. Others might simply prefer to move around rather that settle permanently
in one town or city, committed to one practice. Whatever the reason, veterinary surgeons and nurses seeking temporary
positions can do so in a number of different ways including:

1. Veterinary Job Vacancies in Professional Magazines and Journals

The Veterinary Times and the Veterinary Business Journal are just two publications that advertise veterinary job vacancies for both permanent and locum vets. You may find a vacancy to suit you in one of these or in similar publications.

2. BVA Employment and Recruitment Section

The British Veterinary Association offers job adverts in its Employment and Recruitment section for permanent and locum vets and veterinary nurses. The Veterinary record, also published by the BVA, offers the same service. If you are registered with the RCVS, which you must be to practice in the UK, you can join the BVA.

So too can students studying for a veterinary qualification entitling them to become a RCVS member – but once qualified you have to have at least two years experience before you will be accepted for locum veterinary work.

3. Press Advertising

Some practices advertise in the local press depending upon the location, and it’s not unusual for retired vets living locally to the practice to take up shorter term locum work to cover for illness or vacations. However, for pregnancy and maternity leave, most practices prefer veterinary surgeons who are likely to be well versed in current analytical and surgical techniques.

The problem with this type of advertising is that you can go months and find nothing, and then a vacancy arises.

4. Veterinary Recruitment Agencies

Veterinary job vacancies are far easier to find if you register with a recruitment agency. Some offer permanent and locum vet jobs, while others specialize in locum vacancies. The latter type are best if you are seeking locum work, because they also offer advice on a range of factors involved in locum veterinary work, whether as a veterinary surgeon or a locum vet nurse.

If you are new to working as a vet in the UK, have just started working as a locum or are specifically seeking locum vet employment, then a locum veterinary recruitment agency can offer you information and advice on many
aspects of locum work.

Your Interview

If you are interviewed, be totally honest. If you are from overseas be ready to explain the reason for you seeking work in the UK, and specifically why in this area of the country. Tell the truth – if you are here because there is no work elsewhere then say so. It won’t count against you, but lying will.

Once the interview is over, send a letter thanking the interviewer for the opportunity, and if you have not heard for a week or so, send another letter explaining you have not yet had a response and you are still available for employment,. That might be enough to sway the decision your way if the practice is undecided between two or more candidates.

If you have been informed that you have not been accepted, write back again thanking them for the opportunity – if the first choice fails to take the job then you might have impressed them enough with that letter for them to
offer you the job.

Veterinary Recruitment Agencies

By registering with an online veterinary recruitment agency you might avoid the necessity for an interview. Many practices use the same agency for all their recruitment, particularly for locum vets, and trust the agency to send them a suitable veterinary surgeon or vet nurse for the work involved.

Once a veterinary practice has experienced a good service from a particular agency, they will tend to stick with that one and even use it for permanent vacancies. You will therefore have a great chance of getting permanent work if you perform well in your locum work.

If your recruitment agency does not handle permanent employment, and focuses only on locums, you still have the advantage over other applicants if one of the practices you have worked with finds themselves one permanent member
of staff short.

If you feel you have done a particularly good job with any of your locum work, send in a letter thanking the practice for the work and asking it to keep you in mind should any future permanent veterinary surgeons jobs become available. It cannot harm you, and you could benefit.

Summary:

Finding veterinary surgeon jobs is not as easy in the UK as many believe, and it helps to have a good CV prepared and to
brush up on your interview technique. A good CV can make all the difference, but just as beneficial is registering with an online veterinary recruitment agency that gets notice of veterinary surgeon jobs, permanent or locum, as they
become available.

Finding veterinary surgeon jobs in the UK is not always as easy as you might believe, because there are so many vets coming into the country from the EU and beyond that competition is running high. The same applies to those coming into the UK seeking veterinary work, and one of the best ways to find jobs that are available right now, either in a permanent position or as a locum vet, is probably to seek the services of an online veterinary recruitment agency.

There are other ways of course, such as to check out the Employment and Recruitment section on the BVA website, or its publication, the Veterinary Record. You could also keep an eye on the employment sections of the local and
national press, but by far the best way is to use an online veterinary recruitment agency.

The Importance of Your CV

However, given the competition, is even that sufficient to land you one
of the few veterinary surgeon jobs that are available? Possibly not, because a
vet is no different to anybody else when it comes to competing for work. You
need a good CV and a good interview technique to beat off the competition and
secure that practice post for yourself.

Here are some tips on preparing a compelling CV that should knock the socks of your competition.

1. Your CV should have your name at top left in large bold underlined type, with all your contact details
beneath it in a normal smaller typeface. Include postal address, landline and mobile numbers, email address and your website of you have one to promote yourself.

2. Straight line across under that and then your core competency and aspirations, followed by a list of any
special qualifications and courses relevant to the job for which you are applying.

3. Straight line across then details of your last job together with any special achievements. Follow that with a straight line then your previous posts, one after another from most recent backwards.
