Note: Notify 2.2 is no longer under active development because I no longer have time to maintain a side project of this size. The following is here for archive purposes only.

It’s been a couple months since a software release, so I figure it’d be wise to post an update on the next release of Notify, version 2.2.

As usual, you can see a breakdown of new features and progress on http://vibealicious.com/status/. I’ll expand on some of those here.

Choosable Archive – You can now choose a folder as an archive folder, instead of needing to use “Move To” every time.

Choosable Trash – Notify will still try to detect this as best as it can automatically.

Choosable Inbox – This is in 2.1 as well, but it’s been rather hidden.

Display Read Messages – Now you can display both read and unread messages, on a per account basis. Yay!

Revamped Compose & Reply – Compose and reply has been completely rewritten and redesigned. Notify now respects the reply chains of emails (Yes, finally, I know). As well, sending messages with certain Unicode characters will no longer truncate the message (Yes, again, finally).

Revamped Preview – Previewing has also been redesigned. Notify now allows you to move and reply to messages right from the preview window. Yay!

Global Keyboard Shortcuts – You can now open Notify via a global shortcut of your choice. As well, you can also assign a global shortcut for opening a compose message window.

Star/Flag Support – You can now star/flag messages from within Notify. We’re calling this starring, like Gmail.

Revamped Main UI – The main Notify window has received a facelift, with a new message control bar, and it now maintains list selection between tabs, among other things.

One more thing…

As of 2.2 Notify will be going to a paid-only model. Since 90% of Notify’s features are Pro-only, it doesn’t make much sense to continue offering a stripped down free version that extremely limits the experience of Notify. If you currently have the free version of Notify installed, you’ll be able to decline the installation of 2.2, but future updates will only be available to new users.

It’s been a while since we’ve updated you on the goings on with Notify, so here’s a quick status update of some of the stuff that’s going to be in 2.1.

Multiple Message Selections: One of the largest requests that we’ve gotten, and it will be in 2.1.

Mail.app / Mail Client Integration: Another large request. It will also be in 2.1. You’ll be able to either open messages via the right click context menu, or by specifying the double click option.

Passive Server Communication: 99% of people don’t care about this, so you can skip it. However, if you’re interested in this sort of thing – we’re currently in the process of reworking the backend to use a queue-style system. Things will now happen in the background, sort of like Mail.app.

UI Refinements and such: We’ve made some tweaks to the UI to make things a bit more logical.

Other features: Gotta keep some stuff secret.

There is currently no planned release window for 2.1. Since this release is a rather major under the hood change, we will be having a beta testing period – we’ll let you know more about that when we’re closer to release.

We pushed out Notify 2.0.7 earlier today, which contains several fixes and improvements. If you’d like to see everything included, go take a look at the release notes.

The most important changes are as follows.

Notify now lets you set the name of the folder you’d like it to check. This is useful if your inbox is not called, “inbox”.

Command + Enter can now be used to send messages.

Esc. can now be used to close the new message window.

Delete now works properly across all Gmail accounts. Before, a small number of accounts experienced messages getting archived instead of deleted.

It’s that time folks. As of today, Notify 2.0 free and pro have been released, so go check them out!

So, what’s new?

Pretty much everything. We’ve completely rewritten Notify 2.0, and added a crapton (Yes, that is a valid unit of measure) of new features. Hence, why it is now 2.0, and not 1.1. What sort of stuff has been added? What has been changed?

Redesigned preference pane. We’ve added quite a few more preferences so Notify is now more configurable. These include sound notifications, growl clickbacks, fetchback sizes, all sorts of good stuff.

Redesigned accounts preference pane. Since Notify 2.0 now support more than just Gmail, as well as more account options, we decided to redesign the accounts pane to make it cleaner and easier to understand

Refined user interface. We’ve refined the Notify UI to make it fit in better with the system. This includes Safari-style tabs, as well as Multitouch integration (swipe to change accounts).

Various small other changes including a redrawn icon, etc.

Added support for Google Apps, Mobile Me, and Rackspace Email.

Generic IMAP accounts (Notify Pro).

Added compose/reply functionality (Notify Pro).

Added mark as read & delete functionality (Notify Pro).

Added message preview (“Quicklook” if you will), so you don’t need to open your email client to read new messages (Notify Pro).

We’ll make you super cool and you’ll get all the chicks (or dudes). Seriously Notify is that awesome.

If you’d like to purchase Notify Pro, head on over to the Vibealicious Store. It’s $10 of concentrated win. If you want to try out Pro before you buy, no biggie! Every version comes with a 14 day trial, because we’re nice people.

Special thanks to all of the beta testers that helped us out over the past month – without you guys we’d surely still be bumbling around looking for bugs and such, not to mention have a few strange quirks that we simply didn’t notice.

We won’t be pushing Notify 2 via the in-app update stream for a few days, just in case major issues are found. If you run Notify already, and want to update to 2.0, you will need to download it manually, or wait a few days.

Full details, features, and screenshots of the release are available on the Notify product page.
