One couldn’t really say Reid Peppard is obsessed with dead things, exactly. More with finding beauty in and making use of discard. Thus, she builds purses and hair combs out of found animal carcasses. Recently featured on CNN, Reid and her work were called “garbage…stupid…crazy…disgusting” by people happy to wear leather and eat meat and eggs procured cheaply even though the lives of the producing animals are painful, cramped, and drugged from beginning to end; while Reid’s raw products lived scampering or high-flying through the streets, sewers, and skies of London right up until their demise.(...)

That’s a fashematic up there. I’m assuming you don’t need us to explain it. Mr Fashmatic is Jonathan Zawada, an Aussie graphic design guy who works with Tina Kalivas and Ksubi, puts together a seriously bookmarkable design blog, has his own fashion comic, Petit Mal and has now turned the fashematics thing into a zine.

Ryan McGinley’s Pringle Film

With more and more channels out there, and print readerships in massive decline, old school “this looks great, you’d look great with it, you should buy it, sucker!” advertising is being phased out. Instead, advertisers are trying to image build by creating their own media, like this film Ryan McGinley recently shot for Pringle. It stars deep and moody Tilda Swinton, who everyone in fashion thinks is more amazing, sexy and beautiful than Kate Jesus Wintour Moss. We had a very quick chat to Ryan about it.

MEN’S SHOWS WORTH CHECKING OUT

Last week was men’s fashion week in Milan and Paris. Look, it’s a big deal, OK? Just because the paparazzi didn’t have a Boomtown Brat Pack front row to shoot doesn’t make it unimportant. Word is that Milan’s men’s fashion week was pretty boring – all plucked eyebrows and orthopaedic trainers. However, people did love American designer Thom Browne’s show for Moncler – the ski-wear of choice for rich Italians, and everyone in Italy who wants to look rich, i.e. everyone.

Have you ever been to Chinatown London Market on Charing Cross Road? It’s the best shop in London. Never go in drunk or stoned, or you will spend every penny you have. It’s how I came to own a basket of sweets made out of miniature towels, a bottle of fake pills with smiley faces on them and a statue of Pedobear with blood coming out of his anus. The shop also has those amazing Japanese Purikura booths.

This motorway architecture-heavy fashion shoot from Latin America almost looks more like a menswear shoot than a womenswear shoot because a lot of women’s fashion is based around wanting to be a fairy or a princess or Snow White or something equally pretty and silly.

T-SHIRT COMPETITION UPDATE

So, remember that T-shirt competition we had? We got loads of entries – some amazing, and lots of shite ones. I was going to do a blog about the worst entries, but that seemed a little too snide and easy. It seems more interesting to show you the weird mediocre leftfield. If the above t-shirt was on sale two years ago in one of those Turkish shops in Dalston, or on a Rasta’s market stall for a tenner, it would have been pretty advanced. Instead, this was totally the best design on Dance Party Massacre’s site and it’s kind of lame.

Stone Island is the sort of fashion loved by real men who do hard, sweaty jobs. Last month, I was asked to visit Stone Island’s northern Italian HQ with a load of competition winners and the company’s sales guys. Men’s fashion isn’t all techno bears or skinny goth rent-boys; these guys were hard-drinking geezers and completely into clothes. (...)
