We got a bunch of good-looking boys, dressed half in Adidas and half in Nike and got them to play football against each other for a fashion shoot. They were pretty good for fashion people.

Fred Perry, reduce me, seduce me, dress me up in Stüssy

On “Hell is Round the Corner” Tricky admits that his one weakness (besides being totally mad) is sharp streetwear, hence, “Reduce me, seduce me, dress me up in Stüssy” – which proves just how much of a rebel brand it used to be. The original premium streetwear label was founded in the eighties by surfer Shawn Stussy and was massive by the nineties, but since he left so did some of the cachet. The t-shirts, polos and shirts in this Fred Perry collaboration are a return to form and make you feel all excited and desirous again.

NIGERIAN QVC FROM HELL

According to this guy who used to work at French Vogue, there’s an editor there who, if she hates something, says it’s “non moderne”. If she likes something it is “moderne” and if she loves something it is “très moderne”. Try it for yourself, it’ll make you look dead fashion. With that in mind, New Power Studio’s Black Duck, the sploshing-filled promo for New Power Studio’s second collection, is really modern, as that description kind of makes a lot more sense than, “bizarro-world Nigerian QVC light entertainment” – which is probably more accurate.

Hello Kitty Hell

Hello Kitty is 35 this month. Wow, people really like that cat. In fact, last year the Taiwanese even opened a Hello Kitty maternity hospital. Of course, the whole Kawaii thing is as cliched as a burlesque dancer empowering strippers, but the fact that Hello Kitty survives so well shows just how childish everyone actually is. Maybe that’s not even all that bad, but it’s still true. Sure, Hello Kitty (let’s label her HK for short) is a character, was a cartoon, and is loads of computer games, but she totally is fashion too. There’s HK clothes and accessories that cost a lot more than the pencil cases that started it off.

I have to go cold turkey for months at a time or I get lost in an endless vortex of disappointment, bidding on things that are amazing but ultimately losing auctions because I am always, ALWAYS outbid. We aren’t the first magazine to ask: What if you put fashion students’ wildest flights of fancy on ordinary people going down the shops? Nor will we be the last. But the results are always pretty funny and weird. The last time we saw this was about seven years ago in Sleazenation. It looked daft and shocking then, but after Boombox and Lady Gaga it’s not that difficult to imagine postmen walking around in this sort of space-age fancy dress. So maybe this type of fashion stunt is less of a joke and more of an indication of Primark in 2012.
