THESE NEW PURITANS, LIVE, DAILY

A couple of weeks ago we were invited to film These New Puritans show at Bush Hall in London. As you know, they’re one of our favourite bands, and this was the first time they played their second album Hidden with all the brass, drums, and massive gongs that it was written with, so we were into the idea. The gig was so good we’re showing you a different song from it every day this week. This is track one, “Orion”.

VISIONS OF TREES MIXTAPE

Visions of Trees are Joni and Sarah, a brilliant two-piece from London who make hazy tropical pop music that shares a similar woozy electronic mood to Teengirl Fantasy, only swamped in Liz Fraser-esque vocals. The brilliant title track to their EP is available to stream and download at the bottom of the post, but as well as giving us that we also asked them to make us a mixtape. Rather promptly they did and it’s really, really awesome, so you should listen to it and check the tracklist below.(...)

Salute are one of England’s best metal acts. They play that real metal sound I know you all love. I caught up with frontman Tom Swine for an interview, partly because they are playing at the Old Blue Last next weekend (details below) but mostly because I wanted a chat. COSMETICS ARE ALL TOUGH NOW

Canada has a track record for producing some of the ugliest, most bearded bands alive. That’s probably why Vancouver’s Cosmetics were totally off anyone’s radar until they signed to Captured Tracks a few weeks ago. Suddenly everyone is realizing that not only are they a Canuck band that doesn’t look like cross-eyed grunge hockey hosers with healthcare funded pain killer addictions, but they also write exquisitely sinister and moody dance tracks. Who doesn’t like soft-spoken breathy repetitive vocals about leather and pleasure? So good! They’ve been compared to groups like Glass Candy or Chromatics but they have a darker tone, like a less suicidal and anti-social Dark Day or Malaria!. Plus they’re also a couple, and couple bands totally rule (Pierced Arrows and Lullabye Arkestra, doye). I don’t mean to get all emo and whatnot but anyone who can live, work, and be creative together, and not constantly want to just choke each other out with microphone cables should be heartily commended.

SAD CITY

Sad City is one guy, Gary Caruth from Glasgow, and we don’t know very much beyond that. He had a track released on the great summer showcase comp from New Jersey label Underwater Peoples, which is very slightly famous for releasing excellent records by bands like Real Estate, Frat Dad and Big Troubles. Sad City have most in common with the electronic moods of Julian Lynch – wistful, dreamy, sample-clad electronica that might make you feel a little less S.A.D. WISH

Zeljko Mcmullen is a scarily busy artist type who, along with creating sound collages, sculptures, films and playing synth for Lou Reed, is part of the shinkoyo music collective. Wish is is his solo guise, a place for him to release his “Wagnerian dance anthems”.
