When the USSR finally collapsed in 1991, most of Eastern Europe’s caviar-puking oligarchs got busy buying up all the expensively-built factories and refineries that sat abandoned across the old Soviet Union. Patrick Lion wasn’t one of those proles who simply downed tools and wandered off to dig for vodka in the snow, but he wasn’t the sharpest rich orphan in the Motherland, either, so by the time he arrived at the party, all that was left was the last standing Collective Farm in the Baltic. But Patrick’s a good sport, so when faced with the dilemma of what to do with his newly-acquired plot, he did what I think anyone in his position should do: he built a theme park that doesn’t make any sense.(...)

In the 1960s, Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller families bought a plot of land near Wickford in Essex; a small town 30 miles east of Greater London. Back then, that plot of land was a mess; an abandoned scrap yard next to a disused MOD scrub full of rusting cars leaking puddles of toxic battery acid. Now, more gypsies and travellers live at Dale Farm than anywhere else in the UK. The 1,000 or so gypsies living in Wickford are settled, but half of them have just been told to GTFO. The council plan to fund their eviction with £18m of taxpayer money.(...)

It’s been ten years since 9/11 and the anniversary was marked in America by a huge festival of sadness.

Four separate minute’s silences were held on Sunday at 8.46AM and 9.03AM (the times the planes struck the towers) and at 9.37AM and 10.03AM (the times the towers collapsed).

At a ceremony at the Ground Zero site, the names of the dead were read out in alphbetical order and the President recited passages from The Bible.

For the first time, Obama was out in public with George Bush. They appeared behind bullet-proof glass screens.

Obama also turned up with his wife at ceremonies in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon, Vice-President Joe Biden giving a speech at the latter in which he said 9/11 had created a “new generation of patriots”.

Paul Simon played “The Sounds Of Silence” and people played bagpipes and sung the national anthem.

In London, everyone was so caught up in what the date was that no one knew the Thames Festival was happening.

Quite a lot of people got scared because they thought the gigantic firework finale was a load of bombs going off.

Pussies and idiots on the internet complained.
