How to Recover Corrupted MP4 Files for FREE

This guide will be helpful if you have a corrupted MP4 file and cannot play it in any media player. I'm going to walk you through the video file recovery process step by step with a small but incredibly effective MP4 repair tool.

The best part is that it's completely free and if you follow the instructions correctly, you can fix corrupted MP4 files in just a few minutes!

As someone who loves shooting sports videos, I can't help but notice how much the quality of shooting action cameras has improved over the past few years.

The camera I take with me more often than others is the GoPro. Thanks to its ruggedness and convenient accessories, shooting with the GoPro is a pleasure.

Unfortunately, despite how durable and good these cameras are, no one is immune to the loss of footage as a result of bad luck. For example, at the most inopportune moment, the battery may be discharged. Or you may forget to stop recording and turn off the camera. As a result, the MP4 file may not be saved correctly.

This is all the more important when you are not just filming from the side, but also at the same time you are a direct participant in a sporting event. In such conditions, it is very easy to make a mistake that can lead to the loss of the captured video.

So, during my last mountain biking training session, I strapped the GoPro to my bike helmet. But, as is usually the case, before shooting, I forgot to charge the camera :(

During 3 hours of shooting, the battery was nearly depleted. But I decided to record as much as the charge was enough. As a result, when I finished the track, the battery was already completely depleted and the camera turned off.

Later, when I downloaded the recorded video to my laptop, I found that one of the MP4 files was not playing. The file was 1.3 GB in size, and clearly contained a recording, but I could not play it in any player.

I was not ready to give up this recording, so I went online and started looking for something that could save the day. After looking at a few paid options and trying a few free ones without success, I stumbled upon a tiny free MP4 video recovery tool called recover_mp4.

This tool is not as user-friendly as some of the paid alternatives that you could use to recover corrupted MP4 files, but there is always a trade-off, right?

After studying a couple of guides, it turned out that repairing MP4 files is not such a difficult task. And in this article, I have prepared a small instruction on how to fix a corrupted MP4 file using the recover_mp4 tool. So, let's do this:

1. Download the tools

The first thing you need to do is download the recover_mp4 tool. You can simply search for it on Google by its name. There are many sites where you can download it.

You also need to download one more tool – FFmpeg. This is a popular utility that allows you to process video files. It's also free, supports an incredible number of formats, and is rich in functionality. Later I will explain why it is needed when recovering damaged MP4 files.

2. Unzip them to your local drive

After you have downloaded these two tools, you will need to unpack them.

Unzip FFmpeg first. Then go to the folder where you extracted it and find there a folder named "bin".

Now extract recover_mp4 to this "bin" folder.

3. Prepare the files

For the tool to be able to repair your corrupted MP4 file, you need a good sample file. It can be any playable video captured with the same camera and with the same settings as the damaged video file.

Once you find a suitable sample, make a copy of it and rename the file to "good.mp4".

When recovering an MP4 file, I recommend using a copy of the sample file so that the original videos remain safe if something goes wrong.

Next, rename the damaged MP4 file to "bad.mp4".

Then copy both files ("good.mp4" and "bad.mp4") to the "bin" folder where you extracted the recover_mp4 tool.

4. Checking files

At this point, you need to run the command line. To do this, click the Start button, type "CMD" in the search box and press Enter.

You will see a black window with white text and a command line.

On the command line, navigate to the "bin" folder where you saved the files. To do this, type "cd" followed by the address where the folder is located. For example, if you saved a folder on your local drive (C:\ffmpeg\bin), you would need to type:

cd c:\ffmpeg\bin

… and press Enter.

Now enter the command:

recover_mp4.exe good.mp4 --analyze

This command instructs recover_mp4 to parse the sample video and extract the metadata needed to recover the damaged file.

5. Fix the corrupted MP4 file

When the program finishes analyzing, it will present you with two commands. I suggest you copy the second command into Notepad or write it down – you will need it later.

Once you've done that, copy the first command and paste it into the command line. It should look like this:

recover_mp4.exe bad.mp4 recovered.h264 recovered.aac

With this command, we tell the recover_mp4 tool where to find the corrupted MP4 file and where to output the recovered files.

After executing this command, the tool will save two separate files: one with the recovered video stream (recovered.h264) and the other with the recovered audio stream (recovered.aac).

6. Merge the recovered streams into an MP4 file

After that, the last step is to merge the two recovered streams into one MP4 video file, which requires the command we copied earlier. It should look like this:

ffmpeg.exe -r 30 -i recovered.h264 -i recovered.aac -bsf:a aac_adtstoasc -c:v copy -c:a copy recovered.mp4

Press Enter and FFmpeg will merge your video and audio streams into one recovered MP4 file. It wasn't that hard, was it?

How to avoid problems with MP4 files in the future?

To avoid situations where the recorded video turns out to be corrupted MP4 files, I recommend following simple rules.

The main thing here is to avoid incorrect shutdown of the camera during video recording.

To do this, make sure that the camera's battery is fully charged before important shooting. Do not shoot video with only a few percent battery remaining.

Charge indicators do not always display correct data. At some point, the camera may simply turn off, and in this case, the recorded MP4 file will almost certainly be damaged.

If you're going to shoot for a long time, I recommend bringing a spare battery or two with you.

Also remember, before you turn off the camera, you must press the stop button to stop recording. Then the camera can save the file correctly.

It is also important that the memory card (most often it is an SD card) is fast enough to record video at high resolution and frame rate. Otherwise, at some point, the card may not cope and you will receive a damaged MP4 file.

Of course you get excited when you get a new smartphone or a GoPro camera. Of course you immediately start to shoot lots videos. Of course you're anxious to publish them all. But wait!

You might wanna edit them a little before hitting the publish button. So what do you do?

Well, you start researching video editing software. And you'll find a ton. Actually you'll most likely get confused. Which one to choose?

Okay, you find one that you like but then there's that $100 price that you don't wanna pay because you feel it's too much for the small tweaks you wanna make to your videos. And then you either pirate it or you get some freeware. They're both crappy and you get frustrated.

Hold on! The thing is, what you need is much less and, accordingly, you should also pay less. That's where LiquiVid comes in. It's a light desktop app for video editing and color correction.

What i'm saying is that sophisticated pro features in most consumer video editing programs are an overkill. I'm a semi-professional and I rarely use anything else outside the basics.

However, I've come to realize that using a paid software is much more reassuring for the simple fact that the software works. There is a solid incentive for the creators of the program to make it at least reliable if not fantastic. They are responsible for your experience. Because you pay, they deliver.

Does that make sense?

If it doesn't, it means you've probably haven't edited enough to need a good software. :)

That being said, here's what you can do with LiquiVid - targeted mostly at action cam owners and drone filmmakers who wanna spend as little time as possible editing (quite understandable when you love outdoors):

Stabilization - a steadicam will add to your spending. So if your handheld footage is too shaky, you can fix in in post production with LiquiVid.

Remove the fish-eye effect - the wide angle of a GoPro comes at a price: the footage is distorted, lines are curved. LiquiVid allows you to straighten the lens distortion.

Batch processing - if you wanna make adjustments to more than one video, this helps you achieve that without manually doing it for every video.

Which helps a lot and I can testify that quick and easy are always my main criteria for choosing software to work with. The reason for which I can bypass the price is because I've gotten free original copies of almost any video editing software (being a videographer and running this site helps...).

3 Facebook Video Tips

Gary Vaynerchuk says you gotta adapt your content to the platform you're posting it on. And we have to believe this dude. Well, not really because we can think for ourselves, right?

Now, with Facebook, as opposed to YouTube or other platforms, you want to adjust your videos in order to get as many views and shares as possible. Coz that's the game really.

If you post shit on the web and you believe you have value to offer then you really want as many people as possible watching it. BUT, you also don't want to spam or trick people into watching your videos.

NOTE: We're talking about native Facebook videos. That means videos that you upload directly onto Facebook. NOT YouTube videos that you post on Facebook. Those don't get so many views and I've talked about it here.

So here are my tips for editing Facebook videos:

1. Crop the video and add a headline to the top

In Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus or Magix Video ProX (both of which I highly recommend if you work on a PC) you go to Effects - Movement Effects - Section. Uncheck the Full Screen box and choose Free Proportions from the drop down list.

Since people scroll on Facebook and they do it rather fast, you want to grab their attention with a compelling headline. Make it descriptive, precise and if the content delivers you can create a click-bait headline. Don't exaggerate though. Nobody enjoys being fooled and you want to treat your audience with respect.

Headlines are about trust and respect really.

Think about it. If you see a vague headline then you don't know what to do. If your curiosity pushes you further and you click on it you might find out that the video is of no interest to you. Result? Wasted time, frustration and resentment towards the uploader.

If however you see a clear and descriptive title (with a value proposition like "How to do whatever...") then you can instantly asses whether you want to watch it or not. Result? A better experience for you as a viewer and goodwill towards the uploader. Win-win! That's the goal.

2. Add a call to action throughout the video and especially at the end

In Magix use the picture in picture technique to add images or buttons.

The best call to action for Facebook is the Like and Share button.

But you must NOT use the branded like and share icons that you see on Facebook. NOR use the Facebook logo.

Why? Because if you do, you may not be able to later advertise that video on Facebook. Somewhere in their advertisers's guidelines Facebook states that you cannot use their symbols in your picture or video ads. So take notice of this because if you're serious about Facebook video marketing you will want to use paid advertising to spread your message (especially helpful if you have products to sell).

Make sure the last thing the viewer sees in your video is the Like and Share call to action. People already like and share stuff on Facebook so you tap into what's an already established behavior. You leverage Facebook + human habits to your own advantage. Slick, eh?

It works for us. We sell yarn and soles for crocheted shoes and Facebook is our main marketing channel.

The magic happens when people do stuff or you or when they talk about you without you having to be there to ignite it. This is what sharing does.

Let's say you pay one cent for each video view and one viewer in twenty shares your video. For that share alone you reach an extra 10 viewers for which you paid nothing. These are not real figures but I use them to illustrate my point. Sharing multiplies your impact which can lead to more brand awareness, more sales, etc.

You want that, don't you?

3. Watermark your video with your web address and your Facebook URL

You must start from the premise that people will steal your videos. And that's a good thing.

If nobody is stealing your videos then maybe they're not as good, not as entertaining, not as useful, not as interesting as you may think. So look for signs of theft - that means you're doing something right.

Now, most people will steal your video outright and upload it onto their YouTube channel or Facebook page as it is. All they care about is vanity metrics like views and of course some of them might use ads to monetize it (especially on YouTube, maybe soon to come to Facebook as well).

With a watermark the guy has to work to get it out so that's an extra setp he'll have to make if he steals your content.

We had videos stolen and uploaded on Facebook but we didn't mind because our watermark was right there advertising our web address (our business basically). And we did get a few international buys which are still with us today. Go figure. :)

But this is such a no-brainer, right?

In Magix add a title onto a lower track and stretch it across the entire video. Then adjust the transparency and that's your watermark.

Bonus Tip: Keep it short

Seriously, I don't log in on Facebook to watch hour long documentaries or interviews. I do that on YouTube or Netflix.

Bite size content works better on Facebook because there's a lot going on. If you refresh your stream you'll see a lot of stuff that people posted. All that are alternatives for what's already in front of you.

People want to scroll, consume some content and then scroll some more. Only short videos will be watched. Keep it short and to the point.

Conclusion

Facebook is where it's at for the simple reason that everyone and his grandma is on it. Wherever there's eyeballs that's where you want to be.

At some point the Facebook effect will wear off because teenagers don't want to hang around in the same places with sixty-year-olds. But for now Facebook is a great channel for video marketing.

Get Magix and start publishing.

How To Make Money with Your Holiday Videos

What if you could make money with your holiday videos?

I'll tell you how you can do that but before let me tell you a personal story.

I like to shoot and edit action sports videos. Not only that but I like to publish everything I work on. Be it bad or good, I just put it out there for people to watch and critique.

I did that a few years in a row with our cliff jumping videos. Each of them got tens of thousands of views which kinda brought me some internet micro-fame. I also had a few contraptions of my own while shooting those videos: a DIY steadicam and a DIY slider (see pics below) and the tutorials I made for these also brought me some notoriety.

Anyway, at some point I get an email from a dude in Bulgaria, asking me if I could sell him some of my footage. Sell? Not give away for free?! Why of cooourse I can sell you my footage. :)

So he drops 500 Euro for a few of my cliff jumping clips. Later he used that as stock footage to create a documentary about Bulgaria. Pretty neat, huh?

Your turn

It is very likely that you'll travel to exotic places and do interesting stuff, right? So why not shoot some scenery or action footage while you're there?

Since you already have a camera with you, just take some cool shots with the awesome places you're visiting. Skylines work great, timelapses, aerial footage (if you happen to carry a drone), iconic landmarks (statues, monuments, natural features).

You can edit the material into a vacation video for you and your friends but some clips you can actually sell on stock footage websites.

Next level

If you want your partner to love you less... you can take it to the next level.

What do I mean? Let me explain.

If you truly want to get great shots, you have to work for it. And if you're there for a relaxing time, well, you'll have to compromise.

When I shot those cliff jumping video I was having fun, yes, but I was constantly running to and fro to get shots. My wife was chillin' and I was spinning.

Also having tools with you helps: motorized slider, tripod, steadicam, etc.

So this is a warning: you might make your spouse angry for not taking the time to relax together. But you WILL get awesome shots if you're deliberate about it.

Upload

Once you have the shots, upload them onto a few stock footage sites, write a detailed description and use a combination of descriptive tags so your clips get found easily for your desired keywords.

Also pitch your work to media companies, reach out to them and show them your portfolio. This can work really well if you target your buyers properly.

For instance if you know the producers of certain shows that normally use footage similar to yours then it would be wise to contact them and give them more of what they're already using. That's easy selling.

Uploading some clips to YouTube with a watermark might help as well. Coz YouTube is the second largest search engine. People look for stick footage there too. So you have to be there if you want to be found. Add a link to your stock video site in the description of the video so people will know where to go to buy your footage.

Rinse and repeat

You won't see the big buck coming right away. That's why you have to stick to it for a while.

But of you find joy in it - I know I do - then you'll create a beautiful portfolio that will make you money indefinitely.

So jump right in, create an account with a stock footage website and make some extra cash from your passion of shooting and editing videos.

The Essential "SECRET" To Getting More Clients with Videos

What if I told you a little sneaky tactic that can get you more clients to your business?

We're talking about a simple yet very powerful way of spreading your message.

Are you ready?

Here it is: Give away your secrets!

Doesn't seem to be very specific, does it? Well, let me explain.

If you're selling something, online or offline, you wanna promote yourself, right? And the basic way you might be thinking about it is something similar to "Hey, I have this. Would you buy it?". Or, even more aggressive: "Hey, buy my stuff!"

But you see, that's not only lame and boring, it's also ineffective. Because it comes from a weak stance. You're pushing your message in hope that you can push your product and thus make more sales. It makes sense because that's what every business owner wants.

However people hate being sold to... But they LOVE buying stuff. All the time.

So how do you sell without being salesy?

Simple: TEACH. Because teaching sells.

Since we've reached the secret, allow me to teach you how to take professional photos for your products. It will come in handy if you run an eCommerce business with physical products.

The most important item you need for this is a photo tent which costs about $30 on Amazon. I assume you already have a smartphone with a camera.

To continue the lesson, let me tell you the story behind this video.

I basically shot and edited this clip in order to gain good will with our customers. Since our clients are women who crochet, they may not know hot to take awesome looking photos for their handmade creations.

Now, we sell yarn and soles for crochets shoes. But, if you want to be successful you have to ask yourself "How can I give more value?". Tony Robbins in his new book - Money - Master The Game says "If you want more money you have to give more and be more".

So we create this video to teach our clients something useful that can be added to their craft. It doesn't sell yet it creates good will towards our business which beautifully translates into sales over time.

Coz think about it. The client has many options. But there's a higher chance she'll buy from us because not only do we have the things she needs but we also helped her with valuable information.

It's pretty basic but it works very well.

Offer more value to your customers. Teach them stuff.

And if your teachings can be delivered through videos, then even better. Because video being such a rich media format, the perceived value will be higher. Thus your brand will grow stronger.

Now, you might think that by disclosing too much about what you know will make you loose your competitive edge. Not really. What it does is it sets you up as an expert who's willing to help. And people wanna do business with people who're willing to help.

So grab a camera and some editing software and start publishing videos that help your clients achieve their goals. It's the best publicity you can get and it works like a magnet: your clients get attracted to you instead of you of chasing them.

Snagit Screen Capture Software Review

First of all let it be said there is a lot of screen capture software out there. Some are terrific and save you time. Others, not really. Filtering all the incoming information is paramount to finding the right solution!

As a Full time parent, class teacher and part time Trainer, saving or losing time could be a ‘make or break deal’ when it comes to selecting the tools I use.

That being said I am very positive about Snagit and the possibilities of its use within my own personal projects, training projects AND as a tool enabling me to more effectively ‘Flip’ my class. As the owner and editor of a blog and YouTube channel sharing resources with teachers I’m always looking for the next ‘big thing’ that will transform the way I deliver content. Techsmith has already impressed me with their Camtasia Editor and I’m now ready to try the full licensed version of Snagit. Another program part of their brilliant suite of products.

I’m particularly fond of the integration options of Snagit with Camtasia and other screen recording software as these sound like a very powerful productivity feature. So time for my review:

First of all let’s talk installing and registering my copy of Snagit. In all honestly everything went really well, smooth and was very intuitive. After having downloaded the Snagit File and inputting the License Key during the installation process(Which is a real time saver) it was time to create a Techsmith account. Not only is this a great way to keep track of your products and License keys, it also enables a very smooth interaction between different Techsmith products such as Snagit and Camtasia.

Having completed the Installation process it is now time for me to try out all the available functions. Being a YouTuber as well as Teacher who enjoys flipping my classroom the first thing I looked at was the integration with Camtasia and other programs. And this has been presented very clearly. As you open the Snagit dock you get instant access to your ‘Presets’.

These are THE main time saving function available within Snagit and as I continue to get more familiar with it I continue to find more and more use for it.

What are these presets?

A preset is a shortcut or link to a function of Snagit and these are fully personalised and tweakable. You can select functions, add hotkeys and even control what happens to your files or screenshots after they have been taken. (Send to Google Drive, Send to Camtasia, Send to Word, etc...)

One interesting minor limitation however is the fact that at first I could not use Snagit to take a screenshot of this Preset Manager whilst it was open. In other words; I has to use a different Screen Capture program to capture the Profile Manager. This seems to be a default setting activated upon installing the tool.

However, I’m not one to give up and after some research I did find a workaround with which you can Snagit the Snagit Program. Simply untick the ‘hide’ in your Preference Window. (Tools → Preference → Hide Snagit when taking a Screenshot), I would suggest returning this function to the ‘Default option’ once you’ve taken your screenshot as this improves the overall user friendliness of the program.

My personal experience with this Preset manager has been a very fulfilling one as it has not only allowed me to do more but also this has allowed me to ‘tweak Snagit’ in such a way that it now reflects how I use the program rather than what Techsmith wants me to do. The programs I tend to send my screenshots to are at the top of my selection list and the other options have been removed as to not distract me. In addition to this I have my own Profiles set up so they automatically add a Watermark to each Image I take as you can see here:

Very powerful indeed! This all ties in with the build in ‘Snagit Share’ options.This feature lets you quickly send captures to third party websites and applications for easy sharing. Some of these include Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Dropbox, Skype, Flickr, Evernote, YouTube, Google Drive, Screencast.com, Facebook, Twitter, etc…

Again as stated above… THIS right here is a Time-Saver!

Now onto the next Section of this review the Editor itself!

The editor is a user friendly environment with all the essential tools you will be using right at the top.

One of my favourite functions must be the recall of previously taken screenshots and screencasts. I often forget where I have saved files and having this ‘Recently opened’ view made a huge difference in improving my time management and productivity overall. Of course you have the option to turn this off or tweaking the settings to match your workflow.

The editor really does add functionality to your Screenshot capabilities with tools such as filters, borders and effects to name a few.

The build-in editing tools make it easy for you to add annotations or highlight areas before sharing your screenshots with the world, or in my case, with your class.

All basic editing tools are including and you can even use some advanced functions such as; stamp, step and magnify.

Especially the ‘step’ edit is a timesaver for presenters and teachers as is allows you to quickly add numbers or ‘steps’ to a screenshot.

Since the release of the newest version of Snagit, it is now also possible to record both audio and video within Snagit making it an overall perfect ‘flip classroom/tutorial’ creator. If you ever talk to a teachers looking for a tool to effectively flip their classroom with the least amount of extra work/smallest learning curve. Snagit if your best bet!

So let’s have a look at the quality and options of these video recording and screencasts!

First of all you have the option to turn on/off your webcam, record audio and or system audio. This is perfect if you want to explain something more in depth or if you are narrating a presentation as you record this.

However, the real power is in the export options of these recordings. Not only can you export the video file to your prefered video editor, youtube or cloud storage, you can also export the video as .png snapshots of frames or as a .gif file of the video! This must be my all time favourite function as it allows me to add moving images to website and online learning environments without having to sacrifice bandwidth or storage space!

Of course there is a lot more to Snagit than meets the eye, but I will leave the discovery of those tricks to you. I have been very pleasantly surprised by the power and functions offered in Snagit that I now find myself using my other video editors less and less!

And where I had to use extensions and/or a combination of various programs to finish my ‘flipped lessons’ before, I now stick to one program for recording, editing and uploading!

So to summarize I would like to end this personal review by saying: If you are looking for an entry level recorder/editor which is still powerful enough to create professional content, Snagit is your best bet!

What you should remember from Eben is: be cheap.

The man is one of the top online marketers in world who uses videos to sell his programs and seminars. And yet he simply uses natural light, a reflector and a zoom lens to create good looking videos.

As I've said about video editing programs - don't fuss over it. Use what fits you but start publishing already.

This week Nadine has written in with a question about video, and about what to invest in. So Nadine writes, “My question is about the money. As a micro-business, should I invest in a video? Should I start with my camera on my computer with a nice background, or should I stage a background?”

Okay, so Nadine here is the deal…I don’t think you should invest in a background or a camera. Invest in a light. That’s actually the best thing to invest in if you are going to start making videos; a light, not a video. So lighting, as far as I am concerned, is most of the deal when it comes to making a good looking video. As you can see here, I have got…you know, not a very sophisticated background. What makes this look good is the lighting. I am using a lot of…just a kind of natural daylight, and I have got a couple of little small lights right here in front of me; very minimal lighting.

What I recommend that you do is, do what I did when I got started making videos, and buy a soft box. Okay…go online and look up ‘soft boxes’, for…you know, a hundred dollars or so, you can get a decent soft box that makes really nice soft lighting, okay…and if you are going to just use a regular light, a way that you can get away with making a…you know, kind of a nice soft light, is to get a very high wattage light bulb…like get a hundred and fifty-watt light bulb, and then point it at a white ceiling, okay…that’s maybe a little bit in front of you, and that kind of makes the same effect as a soft box.

What you want is, you want the light coming from…you know, not just one focus place; you want it coming from a more diffused place. They also sell this material called diffusion paper, which you can get a whole pack of it for…you know, ten or twenty dollars, and you can put that in front of lights as well, and that has a similar effect as a soft box, if you are using it with regular lighting, or if you are using it with LED lighting, which we sometimes do. All this stuff, you can…you know, you can go to YouTube, look up some videos on ‘Basic Video Lighting’, and look up ‘Lighting With A Soft Box’.

Another thing you will probably want to invest in, is a reflector…okay. Reflectors are these kind of circular things that are usually silver. Sometimes they are silver on one side and gold on the other, depending on if you want to get a little bit of a gold tint to it…also very cheap. And what you do there is, you take your soft box, and you kind of put it over on one side, and then you put your reflector on the other, and this reflector kind of fills in the light over here.

And if you look at me right now, the way I am lit, I am brighter on this side; I am more lit over here, and I am a little bit less lit over here. There is a little more of a kind of a shadow to this side, because there is windows over here, and this is what’s lighting me.And that creates…you know, kind what they call character lighting. So you want to light yourself a little bit more on one side than the other.

My experience is that, if you have a good light…okay, again…something that you can buy for a hundred dollars, and a reflector, and you set that up, that’s going to make almost any video you shoot…I mean even a video you shoot with your…you know, your phone or your mobile device, or a little hand held camera, that’s going to make your video look really great.

Now next, if you decided to go big and actually get a camera to shoot video, get one that has a lens that’s at least eighty-five millimeters, okay. So I have got a lens that’s an eighty-five millimeter lens that I like to use; the one that we are using right now to shoot this video is a hundred and thirty-five millimeters. Anywhere in that range from about eighty-five to a hundred and thirty-five millimeters. That makes the shot where…you know, the camera kind of has to be far away. Our camera is probably about fifteen feet away from me right now with that longer lens, but what that does is, it makes all your proportions look normal.

You notice if you use your webcam on your computer, or if you use your mobile for your camera, the video can look great, and we sometimes use these things to make our videos, but it kind of…it distorts your face a little bit. It makes everything look a little unnatural and wide. Not that big of a deal, but if you are going to take that next step, get yourself a camera that has a little longer lens.

You might have to do a little research here as well, because if you buy one of the more modern cameras that has a smaller sensor on it,it actually makes the lens a different focal length, so just make sure and do a little research, and make sure that the camera and the lens…you know, when you put them together, they make that focal length between eighty-five millimeters and a hundred and thirty-five millimeters.

And I think if you do those two things, I think you can get some really great video. I mean, most of my videos that I shoot, are shot on cameras and lenses that are several years old, right…but with good lighting. Again this is mostly natural light here, with a couple of small lights; you know, we use those in case it starts getting darker, or just to fill in a little bit, but you can get some great effects as long as you have great lighting. So start by investing in good light.

6 Steps To Create Memorable GoPro Videos

In this article I’m gonna share with you my top tips on how to edit GoPro videos but before I do that let me tell you about John Grisham

If you don’t know who John Grisham is, no worries. You don’t have to. But I’m gonna tell you about him anyway.

You most likely have seen some movies made after his books: “The Firm” with Tom Cruise, “The Pelican Brief” with Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts, “Runaway Jury” with Dustin Hoffman, etc.

Well, this John Grisham dude used to be a lawyer (hence all the legal thrillers he’s so famous for). And he told many interviewers that the life of an attorney is pretty boring.

All day doing dull paperwork, reading the updates on specific laws and creating contracts for clients. And, as a novelist, he quickly realized that nobody wants to read about that.

What people want to read, he said, was a story about the guy who took all the money from the mob leader, left the country with a beautiful woman and went to party on the sunny beaches in Bahamas.

Which leads us to GoPro videos.

If you want many people to watch your videos (on YouTube or Facebook) you have to…

1. Don’t shoot boring stuff

Pretty straightforward, huh?

But seriously. What would you rather watch?

A walk in the park?
Or some awesome cliff jumping?

Now, if for some reason your activity is not as sexy as cliff jumping, then you have to make it sexy through your story, camera movements, funny moments (pattern interrupt) or any other means that you seem fit.

Let’s say you’re not the best skateboarder out there. Hey, neither am I.

So you cannot make a video with you doing the wickedest tricks because, well, you can’t do wicked tricks. Let alone wickedest.

Now what?

Well, you can try to do the tricks and edit the video as great fail compilation. Now there’s a video people will watch. :)

If you take dramatic intro shots - you know - where you get people excited about what’s coming up next (some greatness hopefully) and then you drop fail after fail, you might have a chance at creating a memorable video.

Did you notice what I’ve just said? Or written I should say.

A memorable video. Not a memorable rider. Nor a memorable trick.

Alright, let’s talk at length about shortness

2. Duuude, make your video short!

Watch yourself how anxious you get when you have to watch some web videos that is longer than 5 minutes. Oh wait, did I say 5? I meant 3 minutes. Or maybe 2?

The internet shrinked our attention span.

We want it now.

Get to the point. Cut to the chase. Trim the fat. Grab them fast and shake them hard.

Do I have to elaborate more on this?

My problem is that I don’t always do what I preach. All my videos could have been shorter without losing any watch-ability.

But let me say this no one complained that a web video is too short.

3. Cut on music beats

This is big. No. THIS IS BIG.

Music stirs emotions like crazy. So when you combine moving images with a good tune, you get an emotions evoking machine on steroids.

Some decent footage can be made into a great video with the right soundtrack.

Speaking of which - if it’s hard for you to get a cool royalty free soundtrack you can create one yourself with Magix Music Maker. Just saying.

Since we’ve all watched so many music videos, we almost expect the action to be cut to the beat of the song. So apply this simple, yet effective, video editing technique to your GoPro action sports videos.

Oaky. Let’s talk about video editing techniques.

4. Keyframing

Don’t be discouraged by the fancy name of this feature (available in most video editing programs). What you can do with it is preatty amazing, that’s why you wanna master it.

With this you can gradually alter effects from one intensity level to another. Or you can animate objects around.

Example: You can start a shot in black and white and finish it in color. Or you can animate an…

5. Alpha mask

OMG, another fancy term…
Well, bear with me coz this will get you almost to pro level. :)

With alpha masks you can apply effects only in certain areas of the shot. So if we take the black and white opening shot as an example - we can only make a portion of the frame in black and white. Like the upper half, or the lower right corner, etc.

This technique allows you to blur faces for instance.

6. Vignette

With this you can draw people into the video by softening the edges of the frame.

It creates that cinematic feel that you know it’s there but you can’t really put your finger on. But once you understand the vignette effect you will be able to spot in other videos.

Conclusion

By no means is the subject exhausted. I could go on and on. There are many details into producing a great video that actually gets tens of thousands of views on YouTube.

But when I started editing videos, I didn't care. I just wanted to shoot and edit for the joy of it. And most of the ideas that I’ve used to edit or shoot videos came as revelations while actually doing it.

You will get creative only if you start and keep going.

So don’t take any rule as sacred. It’s there to be broken if you feel so. The most important thing is to have fun while making videos.

Oh, the beauty of keyframing.

Works for everything. Including for manipulating the audio levels of your videos.

In Magix Edit Pro Plus, you go to Effects/Audio Effects/General. Then you drag the volume handle and click the keyframe symbol (diamond). Now you have a keyframe.

Then you click on the eye symbol in order to activate the visual curve for the effect (volume in our case). From then onward you simply create nodes by clicking on the line. You drag those nodes up and down, right or left and you get your audio fade ins and fade outs.

How cool is that for a consumer video editing software? You tell me!

Motion Tracking Tutorial in Magix Edit Pro & Magix Video Pro X7

Right!

So if you're new to video editing, you probably think motion tracking sounds too complicated for you. Allow me to disagree, my friend.

This stuff is easy with Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus or Magix Video ProX.

Okay. Let's define this baby. What is it?

Motion tracking means you can have one or more elements that are overlayed onto your video follow a certain subject within the video. The classic example that comes to mind is when you have a few people moving in the frame and above each head you add his/her name, hovering, invisibly tied to the head.

Now, you can get the same effect in two ways:

Manually, animating the object with keyframes
Automatically using the motion tracking technique

The manual option comes in handy when your subject is not clearly distinguished from the background whereas you use motion tracking when you have good contrast between your subject and the background.

In Magix, you overlay your object onto the main video track and then right click the object. From the list that appears select Attach to picture position in the video.

Then you select with the cursor the area which you want to be followed by your soon to be animated object. After that the software will compile the trajectory of the object and you'll be able to see where your object will go.

BAM! It's that easy.

Rinse and repeat for every object. It can be a title, an image or an alpha mask that you use to blur a face or whatever.

Get your copy of Magix and start editing.

How To Manipulate Video Transparency (Opacity) with Keyframes in Magix Video ProX & Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus

One of my subscribers on YouTube requested this tutorial so here it is.

Please note that even though I made this video with Magix Video Pro X7 (the professional version) you can just as easily do it with Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus (the consumer version).

I've been using both programs since 2010 and I love them! They're stable (don't crash), they're easy to use and work with most formats without needing to convert files beforehand (the software imports MP4, MKV, MTS - ACHD, MOV, etc.).

Just like with any other effect, you can manipulate the transparency / opacity of your video using keyframes. This means that you can gradually pass from one level of transparency to another.

Of course you can define keyframes by setting a keyframe for each level of your desired effect but with this particular example we're using curves. It's a visual representation of keyframes which makes it more fun (not to mention faster) to work with.

So, for transparency you go to Effects/Video Effects/Chroma Key and you adjust the Video Level. The value ranges from 100 to 0 which correspondingly means full opacity (full view) to completely transparent.

And, by the way, if you're wondering what I used for screen capture, it was Sangit.

Magix does screen capture as well but I can't run multiple instances of Magix while also editing with Magix. Or maybe I can but I just won't... It's a software paradox which I don't want to handle. :)

How To Store Your Family Videos for Free

A lot of your videos are probably too personal to share online.

Maybe a new baby was born in your family, maybe you filmed your honeymoon and some of the shots are... well, too cheesy - whatever. You simply don't want to share these videos online.

But they keep piling onto your hard drive or on your smartphone or on your tablet or on your camera. And you just don't feel like paying for a cloud service (like Dropbox or Acronis) in order to store them.

So what do you do?

It's easy: use YouTube! :)

What!? YouTube?

Yup. Upload your vids either raw or edited and then set them as Unlisted. What this means is that the vids will sit on your account but they won't be publicly visible on YouTube.

If you want to show it to someone you can send them the link to the video or you can log in and show him/her the video (in case the subject of the vid is too sensitive to send links out). Please note that there are apps out there that can download almost any video that's hosted online so....

...When your video has too much emotional value that you don't want links to fly around with it, then you can set your video to Private. With this option, only people that you personally invite will see the video. You can grant access up to 100 people with their email address.

I'm a father

I'm telling you this because I'm the father of a new baby girl and I've already shot a lot of videos of her and her mom. Even her birth which is on YouTube of course and I gladly show it to my friends when they visit us. :)

Same with pictures. I add them all onto the timeline of my video editing software and I export them as a single video with each pic lasting 3 seconds. Then that video goes on YouTube as well, unlisted.

Since Google has introduced the 2 step verification login (with a code that gets sent to your phone as a text) this storage method is as secure as it can be. The benefits are great!

And since you're at it, you might as well edit some family videos that you do wanna share. Some editing tips might help. Make sure your browse through these tutorials before you begin.

So you see, you can store your videos for free on YouTube and you can watch them at your convenience online. Also if you want to show them to others simply sen them the links of your Unlisted videos. It's that simple!

You'll probably enjoy the most when you'll watch your videos after a few years, when your baby is grown. That will be fun! I can't wait for my daughter to ask me about her being little so I can show her the pics and videos.
