World of Warcraft (WoW) players using PowerPC Macs were surprised to find out this week that with the latest WoW update they are no longer able to play the popular MMORPG.

WoW is a bit different than many computer games in that it can only be played online with a monthly subscription fee (approx. $15.00) paid to Blizzard (the company that owns the game).

In addition you must buy the original Classic World of Warcraft version of the game to play at all, and you need to purchase the upgrades or expansions as they become available if you want to access the new quests and territories included in the expansions.

Though, to my knowledge, this is the first time that previous users were blocked from accessing the game because of the type of computer they use.

Even more disappointing is what happened to a friend of mine who is a n00b (a WoW novice). He told me that, although he bought and downloaded WoW less than 3 months ago (Mac PowerPCs have a special version different from Windows or Intel Macs) Blizzard gave no notice that in less than 3 months he would have to have another (and newer) computer to continue to play the game.

Decisions such as these, concerning the programming and architecture of games like World of Warcraft, are not made in days, or weeks, or even a couple of months. Blizzard surely knew that when they sold my friend their product , my friend would only be able to use their product for a short time before he would be required to upgrade his system if he wanted to continue to play WoW.

Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) is a type of virtual game world that enables players all over the world to interact and compete with one another, simultaneously and in large numbers, online.

This very cool step sequencer called “Tone Matrix” is from
aM Laboratories.

Very simply, you highlight the squares (see the screen shot above) and musical notes corresponding to each of the squares you select play one row at a time. This is a great example of a (very) basic 16 step sequencer.

I’ve mentioned in prior articles how all audio and video programs are alike in that they all use time-lines and/ or step sequencers.
