No big deal or anything, but look what the FedEx guy brought me yesterday morning while I was hanging out with my beautiful friend Sarah and our gaggle of small children:

Just Better Homes & Gardens, June issue. No biggie. I just casually flipped through it, reading the articles and in no rush to skip to the back page, where there is a photo of my laundry room. (!!!!!)

(You can read about how I prepped for this shoot here, and all the behind-the-scenes moments right here, including the moment the entire planet stopped spinning.)

Later in the day yesterday, when it officially hit newsstands (which of course, I wasn’t even counting down the minutes to or looking forward to all), Andy and I were out and about and casually walked by a magazine stand, not even specifically looking for it or anything.

I was all… hey, what’s this? Oh, it’s Better Homes and Gardens.

How did all the BHG issues get spread out like that?

Let me just casually flip through and read these ideas for great get-togethers…

Then I was like, hey, what’s this?!

Oh! It’s just my dreams coming true.

Then I stood around and read the cover a lot.

And I grabbed the nearest small child and made him notice it too.

If you haven’t caught on: this whole situation is ridiculous. I have no business being in a magazine. Doesn’t even compute. My head exploded like four times yesterday and I was just so so thankful.

Now that the issue is out, I can show you some more behind-the-scenes photos than I showed you in my other post. I can show you how the stylist styled the shelves with a lifetime supply of laundry detergent, pretty art and a sweet little plant…

…which I have been trying with everything that’s in me to keep alive ever since. It’s been on the brink of death and nursed back to life about four times now. I’ll never let go, plant!

I don’t even know what that plant is or what it wants from me. It’s not looking good.

This is how the shelves ended up looking for the final shot:

All I think when I see that photo: I’m so glad we went with the fun shoes! haha. The yellow towels are still sitting on the dryer, by the way. Can’t bear to move them.

Also, remember when I was feverishly preparing for the shoot by getting my house ready in ways that didn’t even make sense, and I told you that I restenciled the wall so the design came all the way to the floor?

SO GLAD I DID. Because they opted to move the washer and dryer together and you would’ve definitely noticed that there was no stencil going down to the floor otherwise. And I bet BHG would’ve been like: “Whatevs! This whole shoot was a mistake and we just felt awkward about canceling it but this is the perfect excuse!”

Not really: they have been absolutely delightful to work with.

In fact, today I’m over at the Better Homes & Gardens Style Spotters blog, sharing my top 5 favorite “I Did it!” behind-the-scenes moments from this whole adventure.

The one that I would like to add to that: Going through this whole experience with you guys! THANK YOU so much for the support and love and sweet notes. It absolutely would’ve been SO MUCH less fun if it weren’t for you all being amazing and pretending like this makes any sense at all. As thanks, I promise I will finally stop talking about this.

By the way, I’m also sharing my organizing tips at I Heart Organizing today. (Organizing tips? ME?! I KNOW. It’s like they’ll let just anyone on the internet these days.)

I love you guys.

We have news! We got family photos done!

Just kidding, that’s not really the news. But we did, and I’m going to pile them all over this post while I tell you the real news.

Oh look, here comes one now!

If you’ve been reading here, you might know that I stay at home with my two littles while Andy teaches high school math. When Weston came along, I was working in corporate PR and loved my job and my coworkers. Andy was teaching and making less than I was. We prayed like crazy about whether he should quit his job and stay home with the new baby or I should.

(This photo doesn’t seem to fit what I’m talking about right now, does it? But here it comes.)

Right at the last second before we had to make a decision, an opportunity opened up for me to move to part-time and work from home. Total dream come true! We couldn’t believe it.

For about a year and a half, I enjoyed the best of both worlds, with one foot in my job and one foot – okay, my whole butt – at home with my babe. Then, my company downsized and all part-timers were let go. I found this out the exact same day I found out I was pregnant with Mila. Andy and I assumed this was NOT just a weird coincidence: it was just that God had a plan for the next step in our lives, and it was for me to leave my job and be home.

All along, I’d been blogging for fun and loving it. We decided that now that I’d be staying home, we’d give it a go together and see if we could turn the blog into my dream job. We’d be living on a teacher’s income – newsflash: that ain’t much, y’all – and it’d be really nice if I could make a little extra to give us a tiny bit of breathing room.

If it didn’t work out, I had a few other options but nothing I really wanted to do as much as I wanted to just write a silly little blog about fixing up our house. It’s been about a year and a half since I left my corporate job and it’s just been incredible. All along, our long-term goal was to grow the blog so we could work from home together and Andy could be here while the kids are still tiny.

In January, I asked for Andy’s help dealing with some of the technical stuff on my blog. He started helping some of my blogger friends do the same thing, and before we knew it, pretty much overnight, he had started a new business. (Fellow bloggers: he’s doing ad optimization. Email me for info.)

The whole idea and the business kind of fell in our laps, but it doesn’t mean Andy hasn’t been working like a busy little bee. He’s has been coming home from work every day, playing with the kids for a couple hours until their bedtime, then working all night until 1 or 2 a.m., and starting again the next day. He’s been going nonstop, working like crazy, and loving that his work is making it possible for other bloggers to now quit their day jobs, or contribute to their family’s incomes in a new way. It’s been the busiest, craziest season of our lives since February.

At some point over the last two months, we both realized that between my blog and his new business, it’s the right time to make a change. Andy put in his notice at school that he won’t be teaching next year, and instead he’ll be staying home, working here with me and the kids! We’ll be blogging together, running his business together and raising the kids together.

Our goal as a couple and as a family has never been to just make craploads of money. (We’ve both been content on a teacher’s salary.) Our goals have always been about freedom, flexibility and time together as a family. We’re more than a little thrilled that starting at the end of May, when the school year ends, we’ll reach that goal, at least for the near term.

It’s a bit of a leap, but we’ve run the numbers a billion times, saved up an emergency fund, and prayed a lot. We don’t know if this next stage of our lives will last six months or six years or whatever, but we do know that the kids will only be this little right now. And thankfully, Andy has solid relationships at his school – they’ve been so wonderful to him there! – so if he needs to go back to teaching at some point sooner or later, that’s okay.

What this means for the blog? OOHHHH YOU GUYS!! It means MORE PROJECTS! I can’t even wait. We haven’t done much real reno for the past few months because Andy’s been so busy, but once summer hits, we’ll have sweet precious *time* to knock out some major projects we’ve been thinking about for years. So excited to get a fresh wave of befores-and-afters in the works to share!

(By the way, aren’t these photos amazing? If you’re in the Atlanta area, I can’t recommend E.G. Allis photography enough. She was delightful to work with. This post is not sponsored or anything; I just love to share a good thing when I find it!)

So that’s what’s next! Pardon me while I go polish my honey-do list.

Wanna know a secret? Just about every spot in my house sports some kind of garage sale find.

When I was a kid, my mom and grandma used to drag me all over town while they shopped garage sales and it was miserable. Nothing made me want to cease existing more than going to yard sale where it turned out we KNEW the person throwing the sale and we were basically shopping their castoffs. (As a child, this was the ultimate embarrassment and enough cause to pray that God might cause the ground to open up and swallow me on the spot.)

Welp, turned out yard saling is in my DNA. I can’t even help it.
If you’re like me and you get an itch to change your decor around before the dust settles on anything, shopping garage sales is the best way to make that happen on a budget.
I’ve shared my tips for shopping yard sales before, but here’s a roundup of what to look for when you hit ‘em up.

1. Books

You know those chunky Readers Digest Condensed books? When I was a frizzy-haired 12-year-old, I used to pass time at my grandmother’s house reading those heavy volumes. It goes without saying that I was unspeakably cool and universally admired among my peers.

I wish I had a photo of me circa 1996, with braces and actual real headgear, to insert here. Alas.

Nowadays, I’ve gotten much smarter and realized that books aren’t meant to be read! They’re meant to be styled! Don’t listen to anything I say.

How to use ‘em in decorating:
Heavy coffee table books add texture to, you guessed it: a coffee table.

Pile them up to add height in a vignette, or to give more substance to a small decorative object that feels dwarfed otherwise.

Or – this is going to blow your mind, so hang on – use them to fill a bookshelf.

Expect to pay: I bought the Reader’s Digest books at the top right of that bookshelf for about 10 cents each. I grabbed most of my coffee table books for 25 cents each. A dollar is my max, and I have to want to read the book to pay that. I do advocate book-reading. For the record. Please don’t stop reading my blog.

2. Goblets, bowls, vases, holders-of-things.

Keep an eye out for milk glass, solid ceramics, or glass vases in pretty shapes.

How to use ‘em
You just can’t beat a pretty little goblet for versatility in vignettes. I grabbed this guy holding the flowers for $1.

Yard sale pitcher + branches from your yard = legit decoration.

My summer mantle

I use the heck out of bowls and holders-of-things at Christmas. It gets out of hand. Ornaments go in everything that can’t escape, like birdcages, bowls, jars, whatevs.

My $3 birdcage from this post

My Christmas Mantle

A vessel with a classic shape will never go out of style. If the color or design is not your thing, like this tragic 10-cent pitcher…

Zap it with some spray paint and pat yourself on the back for a job well done. (Unless it turns out like this.)

Expect to pay: I see vases for 25 cents to a dollar all the time. Milk glass is a little pricier, but I’ve never paid more than a dollar for mine.

3. Picture Frames

Spray paint is your friend. If you like the shape and size, you can remove the art and still use the frame. Such was the case with the frames above Mila’s crib.

These guys on the wall in my laundry room were 50 cents to a dollar each. They were all kindsa crazy colors ’til I covered them with a quick coat of oil-rubbed-bronze spray paint. (Here are the details on that.)

Expect to pay: If you’re willing to give your frames a fresh coat of paint, you can grab the most unloved frames at yard sales and give them a happy new home. I usually pay $1 or less for picture frames, more if they’re on the larger side.

4. Plates

Just sayin’, if you’re into the idea of a plate display? Yard sales are where it’s at.

Expect to pay: Up to a dollar. You’re looking for the lonely strays, not the sets with 8 place settings.

5. Decorative knick-knacks

There is a special, happy little place in my heart for a good yard sale tchotcke. The little bird on the right, for example.

Or just about every decorative thing on my bookshelf wall.

There are no rules here either: just find stuff that appeals to you personally. My little elephant is a favorite. I paid $3 for him, which of course is a fortune in Kelly-yard-sale-currency.

My little “etc” thingy below was 50 cents, and the grapevine balls were 50 cents each. What is their deal? They are weird. But I love them. If it’s weird and you love it, you should get it. That’s an official rule that I just made up.

6. Furniture

This desk still needs a coat of paint, but I shall love it for all its days even if I never get around to this project that’s been on my to-do list for like two years. It was $20.

The mini lamp will also be painted someday. It was $3. And someday I will find a dresser at a yard sale that I will show you. It’s out there, I know it.

7. Mirrors

There is no end to the number of mirrors I am willing to hoard at any given time. These little sunburst mirrors were $1 or $2 each.

I can’t find a good picture of mine, but I bought this exact bamboo mirror for $10. (And they threw in a board game! ha!)

source

Setting expectations

Are you going to walk up to your first garage sale and find a treasure trove of on-trend furniture and decor at ridiculous prices, all in one spot? Nope. (But if you, do call me!) Finding the goods at rummage sales takes digging and looking past a whole lotta ugly. For me, the process of treasure hunting is half the fun.

Go forth and shop!

Looking for tips on how to find the best sales, when to shop, and more? Check out this post!

To ALL mamas.

To the moms of little tinies who wistfully recall the days when you could shower with the bathroom door closed, but still recognize with a deep urgency that you’re living smack-dab in the middle of “the good old days…”

To the moms whose kids are now having their own… (To my mom!)

To the moms who are having an extra tough Mother’s Day this year because it’s the first one since. Or it’s the tenth one since and you thought it would be easier by now. To the someday-moms who are still waiting for their turn. To the mamas who feel like they’re drowning and to the ones who have it all together. To the mamas whose babies live far away, to the ones whose babies are sleeping in the other room, and to the ones whose babies seem to never ever sleep.

To the moms like my amazing mother-in-law whose grown son sends her weird cards with hand-drawn illustrations depicting their birth. (??)

I probably should’ve made my own card that year, instead of letting him sign my name to this craziness.

I hope you have a restful, blessed Mothers Day. I hope you’re pampered like you deserve to be. Happy mothers day!

Her children rise up and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many daughters have done well,
But you excel them all.”
Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. -Proverbs 31:28-30

Today I’m asking YOUR opinion, and I hope you’ll weigh in in the comments section. What’s your take on decorating with busts?

Not THAT kind of busts!

You GUYS. Just be mature. Like ME.

*ahem*

In the last post, I showed you my new little friend, Matilda, there on the right.

I got her for $9.98 on clearance at World Market recently. I knew she was kinda quirky, but I also thought she was fun and/or dignified and/or inexpensive.

(Update: I’m getting the sense from a few comments that you can’t tell Matilda is clothed. She’s a modest lady with a little dress on. She would never appear in public otherwise.) When I got home and showed Andy, it was clear that he loved her as much as I did. He said such things as:

“Gross! What is that?!”

and

“What’s wrong with her left nipple?”

It’s just… lightly distressed…?
You’re making her uncomfortable!
Distressed nipples are IN right now! You wouldn’t understand.

In an effort to convince him that it’s not totally crazers to welcome the severed torso of an ancient Greek woman into our bedroom (although, now that I say it like that… hmm), I dug up a few pictures of busty vignettes.

Like this happy couple, who gaze longingly at each other all their days.

Centsational Girl

Or this coy dame, layered over art for a calming vignette.

Tobi Fairley Interior Design

And how about this happy fellow? (Or is it a lady? There are no distressed nipples to indicate either way.)

Martha O’Hara Interiors

This proper gentlewoman sits grandly atop a perfectly styled bookcase. Doesn’t she add so much personality? I bet her view gets old after a while.

Lonny Magazine

Who can’t use a little sculptural friend to oversee the corner of their eclectic living room?

Gary Spain Design

Or to store their straw hattage?

Domino magazine

And who wouldn’t want to sip a gin and tonic with our dear friend JFK?

Society Social

See? I think busts can totally be done right.

That said, they can also be done wrong. Or creepily.

First, I think the best busts have friendly faces. You know, the people you’d like to sit beside at a dinner party. This guy disapproves of everything you’ve ever thought and it makes me defensive.

source unknown… anyone?

Please feel free to disagree, but personally, I believe you greatly up the creeped-out factor when you bring in an entire posse of these guys. For example, I do NOT want to eat here. I’m certain they’d be gossiping about my table manners, or perhaps crying out for rescue in a creepy whispering chorus.

Stephen Falcke Design

And this. Well.

Once you find yourself propping cement heads casually in urns and laying them sideways on tables, you might reconsider your life’s trajectory.

Of course, like all healthy discussions of decor, it all comes back around to the King of Rock and Roll.

And nipple distressing.

I think Matilda is friendly and approachable, though I realize decorating with busts is a controversial love-it-or-hate-it move.

What I really want to know is – what’s your take? Do you dig the look? Does it creep you out? Would you welcome a gang of sculptural busts into your home, or just one? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section!

Welcome to the FIRST EVER Ditto DIY challenge! HECK YEAH.

If you need a little refresher on what Ditto DIY is, you can check out this post. Here’s the gist: once a month, we’ll all use a drop-dead gorgeous haute couture home design photo as inspiration for a project we’ll complete in our own home. It’s a fun, non-intimidating way to practice making your home look more like what you drool over on HGTV or in design mags.

Ditto DIY is hosted by nine very different bloggers. (Some of us are DIY bloggers, some are deal bloggers, some are mom bloggers… you get what I’m sayin.’)

Soooo you might remember that the first Ditto DIY challenge is inspired by this photo:

Painted tray and vanity vignette, from the home of nina bergsten, photography by marcus lawett.

The challenge: Create your own painted tray and vanity vignette

As soon as I received this challenge from the lovely Darlene of Fieldstone Hill, I felt redeemed by the frivilous purchase I’d made a while back at Goodwill of a random wooden tray even though I had no plans for it. (Hoarding wins again!)

Later when I was getting supplies for this project, I saw this exact tray in a set of two at Michaels for $4.99, so if you’re looking for an inexpensive tray to work some magic on, this might be a good place to start.

This is a painted tray challenge, so the first thing I did was zap this guy with some high-gloss white spray paint.

I know what you’re thinking.

“STOP THE PRESSES!! You SPRAYPAINTED something WHITE?! Where’s the most-brilliant-DIY-blogger award so we can give it to you for this innovation and creativity?!”

I know, guys. I know. It’s exhausting being a revolutionary who’s way ahead of your time.

*Wordlessly high-fives Leonardo Da Vinci*

I did want to step it up a bit and I thought it’d be fun to have a tray that’s versatile and changeable to accommodate my fickle ways, so I headed to Lowes and had them cut me a piece of acrylic to fit right inside the tray.

Then I grabbed some rolls of pretty wrapping paper I’d bought at after Christmas sales, and picked up a few sheets of funky scrapbook paper from Michaels.

I used the acrylic sheet as a template to cut my wrapping paper to fit just inside the tray, set the wrapping paper inside the tray and added the acrylic on top. Ta-da: instant changeable tray, for about $8.

I tried it with wrapping paper (above), with some funky scrapbook paper:

And, my favorite version, with photos, mementos from my kiddos’ birthdays and sentimental cards from friends and from Andy.

(The top right card came from Andy on my 26th birthday. It says: “You’re officially in the second half of your twenties and I still freaking love the crap out of you.” #Romance.)

I love this version because everything stays safe and sound under the sheet of acrylic where it can’t get ruined, but it can live right where you see it all the time, especially if you use the tray in a vanity or bathroom space. I love displaying family photos in my personal spaces, like nightstands or on a vanity.

Other fun things to display on an interchangeable tray:

Wrapping paper for the holidays

Colorful leaves in the fall or pressed flowers for spring

Love letters, postcards, tickets from events

Fun fabrics. (Great way to use those scraps laying around!)

Your kids’ or grandkids’ art projects

Any free printables you dig up on pinterest (here are a couple I’ve made)

Giant photographs of cats. (I’m getting carried away now…)

Receipts and mortgage payments (Okay I’ll stop!)

The beauty of it is it’s kinda like an easy-change picture frame, except horizontal, and it stores stuff.

So now that my tray was done, time to make a little vignette! I got carried away again. I was having fun and couldn’t stop.

Since you asked, why yes, those flowers ARE real and yes, they ARE from my yard, where they are inexplicably thriving under my <strike>careful nurturing</strike> complete lack of attention. (This is a miracle.) Once again: I clipped them, live, like Martha Stewart. Quit asking me about my flawless green thumb, guys! You’re making me blush. No really, stop complimenting my gardening skills. I can’t take it.

The art in the background is the amaaaaazing one-of-a-kind commissioned piece (ahem) from this post.

See my new friend there on the right above? Her name is Matilda. I mean, obviously that had to be her name. She’s a highly controversial figure in my house, and we’re going to chat about her in an upcoming post. Not in a gossipy way, behind her back. I’ll turn her to face us.

From the next room, laughter and the banging of toy trains on wooden train tracks distract me from the glowing laptop in front of me, so I pause and listen to a small three-year-old voice giggling and chattering away in conversation with his daddy as Thomas and Friends chug-a-chug up short wooden slopes and through plastic bridges.

Gratefulness wells up within me and I stop to thank God for these sounds, for the peace in this house.

My new addition catches my eye…

And I think, yes… it is so, SO well with my soul.

But…

in these times for me, with tiny feet running barefoot down hallways, plenty of food in the pantry and blessings raining down unexpectedly at every turn… in these times we rarely struggle in any real way. These times are precious and good.

When peace like a river attendeth my way…

We are not often tested. We are not made to wonder where our next meal will come from, or whether our little ones will survive the night. I wonder what my faith would look like in other circumstances.

When sorrows like sea billows roll… Whatever my lot…

Have you heard the story of the hymn “It is well with my soul?” I always liked the song, but once I heard the back story, it took on a whole new meaning for me.

The man who wrote the hymn was a successful, wealthy lawyer in Chicago with a wife, son and four daughters. In 1870, he lost his only son to scarlet fever. One year later, every one of his real estate holdings was wiped out by the great Chicago fire. Realizing his family needed rest and escape, he decided to take them on vacation to Europe via a large steamboat set to sail across the Atlantic. At the last minute, he was held up by business and sent his family ahead of him with plans to join them in Europe shortly.

En route to Europe, the ship carrying his wife and daughters collided with another ship, sinking within 12 minutes and claiming the lives of 226 of its passengers. As the ship sank into the deep, cold ocean, his wife stood on the deck with her four daughters watching the water swallow the ground beneath them. Her last memory of the disaster was having her baby girl torn from her arms by the violent force of the water. All four daughters died that day.

Upon hearing the tragic news, the man boarded the next ship out of New York to go to his wife. As his ship passed over the place where the previous vessel sank, he stood on the ship’s deck gazing into the water that claimed his children. I can only imagine the turmoil washing over his heart as the waves rolled beneath him. He returned to his cabin and wrote the lyrics to this hymn.

When sorrows like sea billows roll…

Whatever my lot, thou has taught me to say…

It is well. It is well with my soul.

What faith in the goodness of God! What trust, when all that had happened to him screamed not to trust. I consider the faith that would compel his pen to compose these lyrics… I want to soak up that perspective and pour it over my heart. To set my heart on ground so solid that no violent wind or wave can shake it. To consider the sovereignty of His plan even when it’s so far from what I might have chosen… I want to have that faith.

So here, in my home, where peace reigns and our hardest days are still gifts, I thank God and ask him for faith that doesn’t lean on an easy life. I ask for faith to give Him praise for who He is and not what He gives. I ask to see through the tearful eyes of a heartbroken man gazing over rusty railing into an angry ocean, so that I might say, “whatever my lot… it is well with my soul.”

And that’s why I’m so happy for this new reminder:

The sweet family who owns 163 Designs sent me these amazing canvas letters after I spied them on another site. As soon as I saw them, my whole world went “SCREEEECH” to a stop and I had to investigate! I loved that the letters were the same color as the walls, so it’s the 3D effect that jumps out at you.

I needed some of those letters in my life, specifically for this blank wall spot between my kitchen and living room…

I worked with Jen of 163 Designs, who I instantly connected with and kinda have a girl-crush on now that I discovered her blog – and she helped me create a design that would fill that spot perfectly, with a quote that would remind us every day that It Is Well, and not just because It Is Easy.

These letters are laser-cut out of eucalyptus and covered in canvas. I loved the canvas texture, but I wanted the letters to be the same color as my walls. I asked Jen if the letters were paintable, and she was sweet enough to send me a little ampersand to experiment with. You can really see the canvas texture here:

I wanted to see them hung up first to be SURE I wanted them blue. To hang them, I just stuck a couple of these bad boys right to the back:

Then I whipped out the trusty laser level to get them all aligned. Not gonna lie – hanging them straight and even was the hardest part by far. Once they’re in the right spot, you just stick ‘em, and the mounting squares work their magic.

Are the crooked letters bothering you? I know, me too. I knew I had to paint them first, so I wasn’t too worried about it at this point. I hope we can still be friends.

I loved them, but seeing them on the wall confirmed for me that I wanted them fade a little more. I wanted them to softly hum the hymn, not scream it at me, know what I mean?

I used a little foam brush to veeeeerrrrryy lightly cover the letters in some spare wall paint I found in the garage. At first I was worried because the color looked a little patchy. (You can also see where I touched up the wall paint. Lazy girl’s solution to the pencil marks I made when I was aligning the letters!)

But they dried evenly and ended up looking pretty fantastic. The edges are dark wood, so they help the letters pop just the right amount. Mostly it’s the shadows that catch your eye.

By “no-sew,” I mean: I totally had to sew to make these curtains, but just to hem them. Hopefully you won’t have to. Or you’ll just be four hundred times more competent with a sewing machine than I am, and can swiftly sew a straight hem without shaking your fist at the sky and cursing your wretched sewing machine.

These are my new DIY Greek Key curtains that I showed you in the last post.

They were inspired by the Greek key goodness of Hollywood Regency, and are rough knock-offs of these from Jonathan Adler.

If you’d like to make your own DIY Greek key curtains, you’ll need a few things, but not much. I spent about $50 total for both panels, and that includes the blackout lining I added. If you don’t add lining, you’ll only be out about $25 for both panels, and friends: that is a freakin’ amazing steal.

Materials Needed:

Ikea Vivan Curtain panels (Or other simple white curtains. These are $10 for two panels, which is outrageously cheap. I also love that they’re extra long and they hang with hidden tabs.)

Grosgrain ribbon. I used a little more than three 18-foot rolls of this brand*. I bought three rolls, of course, and then had to hike all the way back to Joann for the last two feet of ribbon to finish. Don’t do that to yourself!

Stitch witchery, like this*. One roll was EXACTLY enough for me.

Scissors

Iron

Damp rag

Small piece of cardboard to use as a template

*These are affiliate links, so if you click through them and purchase, you’ll be supporting VATW and I’ll send you virtual kisses. Thank you!

Step 1 (Totally optional): Hem your curtains

Ikea Vivan curtains are forever long, I think 120 inches. I had to hem mine to the right length… with a sewing machine. It didn’t dawn on me until this exact second that I should’ve just used the stitch witchery instead of sewing. Apparently, I am unintentionally masochistic.

I think curtains look best hung high and wide, like this:

source

I hemmed mine so they just barely skim the floor.

Step 2: Prep

Lay out your curtain on a large flat surface, preferably surrounded on the perimeter by large piles of toys, and iron it.

Then cut your cardboard square. This square will serve as a template to make laying out your greek key design GOBS easier. (I’ll explain how in a sec.) My square is about 4 1/4 inches on each side. I used that size because when I hemmed my curtain, the bottom hem ended up being 4 1/4 inches wide, and I thought it might look nice if the ribbon runs along the hem line on the bottom.

Your square will be used to measure how far away from the side of the curtain panel your ribbon goes, and how big the design in the corners is. Here’s my little square. Isn’t it adorable?

Okay, stop ogling it. You’re making it uncomfortable.

Step 3: Iron on your ribbon

The short story is that you’re going to cut little lengths of ribbon and stick them to the curtain using your iron and stitch witchery.

The longer, detailed story is this.

Line up your stitch witchery and ribbon together, like this (but with the ribbon on top) as you lay it out.

You’ll use your cardboard template to know how long to cut each piece and where to lay it on your curtain. My little square, again, is 4 1/4 inches on each side, and this is how I used it to lay out the curtain:

My little diagram is not perfectly square or to scale, but you can see each square on that grid is 4 1/4 inches, which I measured out with my little cardboard buddy.

ORRRRR if you’d rather use measuring tape, go for it! It felt TONS easier to me to measure out my design with the little cardboard template. Measure one cardboard square from the top edge and lay out your top ribbon, then measure one square down, etc. (If you’d rather use measuring tape, check out the “one quick note” at the end of this post.)

Let’s talk about the corners/intersections.

When I first started this project, I thought I would fold the ribbon over on itself in the corners, like a mitered corner, but I didn’t end up loving how that looked. I couldn’t get it to lay quite flat enough, and it was also really hard to make it perfectly 90 degrees. This was my first attempt, but I ended up undoing it because it looked like a kindergartner’s craft project.

The method that worked best for me was to cut small lengths of ribbon and just overlap the ends.

Cut your first length of ribbon and seal the edges to prevent fraying. I don’t have pictures of that because I completely forgot to do this step. But you should, because it’s the right thing to do*. You can hold the edge of the ribbon on your iron set to medium heat, or hold it over a candle just until it seals. My curtains will fray faster than yours, and you’ll totally win the best-curtain contest.

*I used to work at a company where, when an executive wanted to justify their decision and couldn’t do so with logic, they would declare that it was “The Right Thing To Do.” I quickly learned that you do not question when something has been declared The Right Thing To Do. You cannot argue with that reasoning.

Using your little cardboard square, measure out where the first strip of ribbon goes. You can start where ever you want, because this is America. Unless you’re reading this from another country, in which case these rules are void where prohibited. I measured three cardboard squares down from the top and one square away from the side and started there. Set the ribbon on top of the piece of stitch witchery.

Once it’s exactly where you want it, cover it completely with a damp cloth.

And place a hot iron on top of the damp cloth. It will make the most deliciously satisfying sizzling sound as you hold it there for about 10 seconds, and if your iron came from your wedding registry eight years ago and has been horribly abused, you might notice an odd fishy smell, and decide it might be time to replace it. Or maybe that’s just me.

Continue laying on pieces of ribbon and ironing them to stick to the curtain until you’ve finished one corner.

Then turn over the corner, lay the rag on top and iron the back. Just set your iron on top of the damp rag and leave it still for 10 seconds. Don’t move the iron back and forth. This is your ten seconds of sweet relaxation: soak it up.

Now check to make sure everything stuck. If some pieces are loose, you might have missed them with the iron, or your rag might’ve been too dry, and you should repeat those spots until everything is secure.

Continue around the curtain panel just like this until you’re all done! It took me a long time to figure out the process and how to measure it all with my first panel, but once I figured out all the stuff I just told you, the second panel went much faster, maybe two episodes of Mad Men.

Step 4 (Also totally optional): Add blackout lining

I picked up this lining from Ikea. It’s $25 for two panels.

These panels hang with back-tabs just like the Vivan curtains, or they also come with little clips to clip them to the back of the Vivan curtains. At first I tried just hanging them on the same curtain rod, or with clips, but they hung wonky and did not look cute, so I decided to sew them to the curtains permanently.

I have no idea what the “right” way is to do this, or if there even is one, but this method got the job done. In my book, minimally functional = fantastic.

First, I hemmed the lining to be about 8 inches shorter than my curtains. Then, I turned my curtain panels upside down and laid the lining on top of it, aligning the top of the lining to the bottom of the tabs on the curtain panel, like this.

Pin it there, then sew a line straight across the top of the curtains. I put the lining in that spot so that the seam where I sewed the lining to the curtain would go right on top of the manufacturer’s seam on the Vivan curtains, and you don’t notice it at all from the front.

By the way, another thing I didn’t love about this lining is that it’s this really dark gray color. If you hang it up by clipping it to the Vivan curtains as intended, you can see the dark gray lining right through the curtains…?? What a weird design. The other benefit of sewing them on myself is that I could turn it so the lighter side faces into the room and it’s not so visible through the curtain.

The Glansnava lining is exactly the same width as the Vivan curtains, so just pin the sides together and sew right over the manufacturer hem on both sides. Don’t worry about sewing the bottoms together. It’ll hang nicely with just the top and sides sewn together.

This is what the bottom looks like. The lining is a few inches shorter than the curtains.

By the way, all I even know how to do on my machine is a straight stitch, so this is basic junk, y’all. Make your lining shorter than your curtains, then sew the two pieces together on three sides. The end.

Step 5 (NOT optional): Hang ‘em up and love them til you die.

It’s The Right Thing To Do.

One quick note.

If you’re not digging the idea of using stitch witchery and would rather just sew the ribbon onto the curtain, by all means. I bow to your greatness. My friend Kimberly at Swoonworthy made a similar design on roman shades, and you can see how she sewed the ribbon on right here. If you’d rather use measuring tape to lay out your ribbon, she also did that method, and you can follow along with how she did it.

Have you ever customized your own curtains? Have you ever run out of materials JUST before you finished a project?

I went yard saling yesterday and helpfully relieved several burdened homeowners of their useless tchotckes. I spent $3.

But I would’ve spent $6 if I hadn’t been a ruthless, cold-hearted negotiator.

Not really.

Kinda.

But not really.

By the way, at least where I live, this is PEAK yard sale season: right now, for about the next six weeks. (Here are some yard sale shopping tips. And if you’re throwing a yard sale, some tips on that too.)

Andy brought these home for me yesterday.

Hello, they’re basically screaming in my love language. And emanating happiness all over my house. There’s joy shooting out of each bud like laser beams. I love spring.

And yard sales.

And any good deals. And writing posts where I keep waiting for the point of the post to come to me, but it eludes me. I love you guys. I wish I could send you tulips. Not roses though, not that you don’t deserve it, just that roses send a different message and you might think I’m coming on too strong.

I’m glad we had this talk.

Let’s see what deals my lovely sponsors have for us all this month!

I seriously love it every single day. THIS is the way all frames should be made: take out the art without removing the mat or glass, and it levels it self when you put it back on the wall.
