Solar and Computers to a School in Rural Nepal

My dream is to help a school in an extremely remote village of Western Nepal to buy and install a solar system, batteries, inverters, computers and printers necessary for the school for its computer lab and e-library. The school was built with support from local people and some of the colleges and students of Kathmandu.

Lalu village where the school is located lacks basic infrastructure, however with the local people driving it, the school is a vehicle to bring the community into the 21st century.

The school has very innovative ideas that make it unique. Firstly, Modern Model Residential School is a rural based purely service oriented co-educational English medium primary institution registered as Non-profit Distributing Company. Secondly, it strives to be a progressive institution that acts as a hub for the community, imparting education mixed with modern technology.

A brief about the dream.

Using a pro-rata system the school is able to provide quality education to people of the entire community. Orphaned, disadvantaged or disabled students and families are admitted free of charge, whilst others contribute as little as $3 per month. This shows how even a small amount can change not only the students’ lives but their families and the entire community.

Kalikot is amongst one of the world's most impoverished areas. “57% of people in Kalikot district live under extreme poverty. Per capita income lies at Rs. 6000 (around $ 83) per year and average life expectancy remains at just 42. Only 57.27% of children are literate where as overall literacy rate is at just 38.47%. Still 45.95% of children involve in some kinds of economic activity instead of going to school.” -Central Bureau of Statistics of Nepal, District Profile, Kalikot 2008 AD

Nepali on the Youth Advisory Group inaugurated by WFUNA with other five youth leaders from various regions around the world appointed by the Secretary-General to advise him on youth issues, by brainstorming pragmatic, innovative, and cost-effective programs for WFUNA's local, regional, and global networks. They assist the Youth Program Officer in disseminating information about these program to WFUNA's youth constituents.

WFUNA's inaugural Youth Advisory Group is six youth leaders from various regions around the world appointed by the Secretary-General to advise him on youth issues, by brainstorming pragmatic, innovative, and cost-effective programs for WFUNA's local, regional, and global networks. They assist the Youth Program Officer in disseminating information about these program to WFUNA's youth constituents.

Martina Guarnaschelli, Argentina

Dina Buchbinder Auron, Mexico

Dina Buchbinder Auron became involved with UNA Mexico when she met Dara Parker from UNA Canada at the Ship for World Youth, and was inspired with a project called Sport-in-a-Box. Upon her return, Dina joined UNA Mexico, determined to adapt the Canadian project to create a solid program for Mexican realities: Deport-es para Compartir www.deportesparacompartir.org.mx. The aim of this program is teaching children to become better citizens and changemakers by raising awareness on the eight Millennium Development Goals through games and sporting activities that promote civic values. Deport-es para Compartir has reached more than 32,000 children, their teachers and families in 18 states, mostly from indigenous communities. Dina has been selected as a Global Fellow at the Youth ActionNet from the International Youth Foundation, won the UVM Award for social development in 2009, and has been an Ashoka Fellow since 2011. Dina studied International Relations at ITAM University in Mexico City and speaks Spanish, English, Italian, French and Hebrew.

Richard Evans, New Zealand

Richard Evans became involved in the United Nations Youth Association of New Zealand (www.unyouth.org.nz) while at secondary school. He became an officeholder in the organisation, going on to lead it as National President in 2010-11. He is from New Zealand's South Island and is currently a student at the University of Canterbury, working towards a conjoint degree in law and history. From February 2012 he will join a law firm in Wellington, working in the field of public policy. Beyond university and WFUNA, Richard is an active member of the Asia New Zealand Foundation and the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs among other organisations, and a volunteer support worker with Refugee Services Aotearoa.

Sumit Ghimiray, Nepal

Sumit Ghimiray is the Vice President of United Nations Youth and Students Association Nepal (UNYSAN), has been working with UNA Nepal and UNYSAN for the past six years and has successfully implemented number of projects (www.unyouth.org). He holds a BA LLB degree from Symbiosis International University. Sumit presently serves as a Project Coordinator at Forum for Women, Law and Development (FWLD) a leading human rights NGO based in Nepal.

Eui Yun Kim, Republic of Korea

Eui Yun Kim is currently purusing his degree in International Studies at KyungHee University in Seoul, Korea. He has been involved with UNA ROK and various UN-related organizations for the past four years hosting MUN's, seminars, and youth-related programs. He has been Secretary-General of both the 15th National Model UN and 1st Global Classrooms: Seoul model UN conference. His ties with WFUNA started in 2009 as the youth representative for the Korean delegation at the 39th Plenary Meeting in Seoul. Moreover, he was a participant for both of the Youth Seminars hosted by WFUNA in Norway and Argentina.

Tyna Vayalilkollattu, United Kingdom

Tyna Vayalilkollattu is the President of the United Nations Association Youth Council and Director for the United Nations Association-UK. Previously, she was on the executive of the Kingston University UN Society for two years and was elected President of the society in 2010. Under her leadership over £7000 was raised for disaster relief and the UN Society and Kingston University hosted its first two day conference on the Millennium Development Goals with cooperation from leading UK charities and UN agencies. Tyna recently completed a six month internship with UNA-UK, where her principal focus was development of the UNA-UK Youth network through governance reform. Tyna has an LLB in International Law from Kingston University and a BA in Political Science from the University of British Columbia.

The Shiva Community Forest lies in the Khata corridor - a stretch of forest connecting Bardia National Park in Nepal and Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in India. Both protected areas are home to endangered species including tigers, Asian elephants and the Asian rhino. Local people have to contend with crop destruction by these wild species. Now, Shiv Forestry has found a non-lethal way to keep rhinos away from farms - planting chamomile and mint. Rhinos hate the smell of these pungent plants, which are also good cash crops for rural communities - especially when marketed by Shiv Forestry as wildlife-saving products.--via world challenge

After the successful years of YES! Club World-Nepal, and with its International and National Programs and Projects such as BAL UTSAV- International Talent Hunt, YOUTH CAMP, Spread A Smile, NEW YEAR Special Flash MOB, STAND UP TAKE ACTION, Deusi Bhailo for a CAUSE, Film Making Workshop, Awareness through ART , Youth Interactive Series, Survey Projects, Rock Celebration and many others. In an insistence and the continuous interest of our well wishers from Kids, Teenagers and Youths along with their beloved Parents to have a special program this FESTIVAL. So, here we introduce KIDZ and TEENZ Adventure Camp.

KIDZ and TEENZ Adventure Camp has been actually organized at South Africa after the immense success of Grishma Mahotsav in India and the Bal Utsav Celebration and Youth Camp in Nepal and also several programs at other countries. We have been organizing several programs more of focusing for kids, teenagers and youths also their parents and guiders- teachers , trainers and guardians. Kidz and Teenz Adventure Camp is not just an Adventure camp but it’s an adventurous camp that includes learning through FUN.

There will be several activities for kids and teenagers that they would love to be in and that helps them a lot into unleashing their potentialities. We are offering some very unique programs that are very efficient and profound ones from workshops such as All Round Training in Excellence, Youth Empowerment Seminar to making the simpler the way they learn to from Mathemagic which actually includes Vedic Mathematics. Also, Youth interactive series for ages from teenagers to youngsters and several unique workshops. The session ill also have team building skills including community projects as per their education level and also adventure camp as we have said it. Also we have some special programs to cater for the parents and the idle teachers to learn more and emphasize on their children.
