Floppy Hats of Freedom

In 5th grade Latin, we have been exploring the lives of slaves in the Roman Empire and the rituals of becoming a freed person. Freed slaves wore a special hat to demonstrate their new status, called a “pilleus” in Latin. This hat was also worn by all free citizens around the winter solstice festival of Saturnalia. During Saturnalia festivities, Romans free and slave alike celebrated a mythical time of peace and prosperity with a week of games, gifts, and dinner parties. Here, all of the 5th graders have undergone the manumission ceremony and have earned their pillei, or, as we call them, their “floppy hats of freedom”!

8th Grade Fashion Show

The 8th grade performed the 7th annual textile fashion show featuring original designs and unique materials. Special thanks to Lana Young for helping coordinate the show.
