Opening Reception: Friday, February 19, 7-9pm
Exhibition Runs: February 19 - March 20, 2010

Civilian Art Projects is pleased to present photographic selections from Gesche Würfel's multi-year project Go for Gold! The solo exhibition Go for Gold! The Transformations of the Lower Lea Valley, a first for the artist in Washington, DC, opens to the public on Friday, February 19 at 7pm and will be on view until March 20, 2010.
Go for Gold! depicts the transformation of London's landscape in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games. A trained urban planner, Würfel began the project in 2006 as an investigation into globalization and how it disrupts relationships between residents and their natural and built environment.
According to the Al Miner, who penned the essay for the exhibition, "the sinister side of urban renewal is revealed in Go For Gold. Pink pylons and a lapis blue, concrete wall are futile barriers against progress. As the blue wall fades into the sky behind an orange construction fence, the battle is almost lost. A roadside billboard advertises only decay, peeling paper from ads long faded beyond recognition drips down the surface like tears. Other images offer even fewer clues about the region's almost eradicated history. The primordial ooze of evolution resembles a river of jade and gold, but is ominously enclosed by a grey moldy roof, while in another piece only trees survive. We must rely on the artist's titles, like the text on forgotten tombstones, to tell us the fates of these seemingly blank canvases.
Geshe Würfel's work tells not of the competition between athletes, but rather between urban generations and, indirectly, between cities that vie for the wealth and power of hosting the Olympics. By deleting human presence in her images, much as the Olympic construction has in these spaces, Würfel allows us to imagine what came before and quietly contemplate if regeneration requires the erasure of even the faintest palimpsest or guarantees that we will come out better on the other side. A swansong for the local communities that this global event is destroying, these poetic images will remain far longer than their subjects."
Gesche Würfel was born in Bremerhaven, Germany. She holds a degree in Spatial Planning from the University of Dortmund, Germany, where she worked for several years in the field of regeneration and public participation. She completed her MA in Photography and Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she graduated with a distinction in 2006. She currently works and lives in Boston, MA. Her work has been exhibited widely, among others in the Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2007 show, which is an exhibition of the most promising new talent to emerge from art schools across the United Kingdom. Her work has recently been published in "Younger Than Jesus: The Artist Directory", co-published by the New Museum and Phaidon.
Al Miner is and artist and Assistant Curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Exhibition hours:
Wednesday & Saturday 1-6pm, Friday 4-8pm, and Tuesday and Thursday by appointment.
Civilian Art Projects | 1019 7th Street NW | Washington | DC | 20004

Washington, DC (January 4, 2010) - Industry Gallery's inaugural exhibition, opening Saturday, January 16, 2010, 6-8 PM, will feature the first solo U.S. exhibition by Jerusalem-born artist Shlomo Harush. "Round the corner" will feature twenty unique, hand crafted stainless steel and aluminum works that examine different sculptural aspects of conventional seating units. Harush will arrange the work in an urban tableau within the gallery's 4,300 square feet of industrial space.

Harush conceives and manufactures each of his pieces himself. His career is noted for his exploration of the physical properties of the material he manipulates, the role and perception of volume, differing ideas and expectations about function and design, and his frequent juxtaposition of probing theoretical intent with whimsy.

Harush, born and raised in Jerusalem, studied photography and Middle Eastern history. He moved to Milan in 1990 and began creating sculptural works in aluminum and stainless steel. Since 1997, he has divided his time between Milan and Brooklyn. His work is included in numerous private collections and was featured in the print advertising campaign for Dolce & Gabbana's Winter 2007-2008 women's collection.

"Harush's work, which weds the physicality of industrial materials with intriguing and innovative design, was chosen for the gallery's inaugural exhibition because it well represents exciting trends in 21st century design," said Industry Gallery owner Craig Appelbaum.

The opening of "Round the corner" coincides with neighboring gallery Conner Contemporary's opening of Jeremy Kost: Anyone Other Than Me ..., Taylor Baldwin: Living Fossil, and Matthew Sutton: Sounds a Grown Man Should Not Make.

Industry Gallery (www.industrygallerydc.com), based in the Atlas/H Street Historic District of Washington, DC, specializes in 21st century design. The gallery will regularly hold single artist exhibitions representing a broad spectrum of design trends by international artists who create functional art from industrial materials. The gallery is open Wednesday - Saturday, 11AM - 5PM, and by appointment.

Part art, part anthropology, Jackie Milad describes her work as a, “reference library for gestural language, simultaneously unsettling, humorous, seductive and familiar.” Inside Mouth will feature a series of elegant, lyrical line drawings that chronicle the subtlety of facial expressions and show androgynous figures in awkward exchanges with one another. A photographic analog documents volunteers imitating the expressions that appear in the drawings.

During the opening reception, several performance artists will wear the same style bald “wigs” as used in the analog to imitate the facial expressions in Milad’s drawings, a live recreation of the process that resulted in the photographs.
Happy 2010! We're diving right in with an artist talk for "21st Century Ghosts," a site-specific installation in our store front window space, this Friday night. And our next exhibition "Don't Look Now!" by New York based artist George Jenne opens Friday, January 15th.
CHERAYA ESTERS / JEREMY TIDD
21ST CENTURY GHOSTS
December 16, 2009 - January 8, 2010
ARTIST TALK - FRIDAY, JANUARY 8TH AT 8PM.
21ST CENTURY GHOSTS is an homage and memorial to the Tsuga Canadensis, the largest natural evergreen conifer in the eastern United States. According to the artists, "they generally stand full grown at a height of about 100 ft, but exceptional trees have been found up to 173 feet. The oldest recorded specimen was at least 554 years old.
In the early 1920's a sap-sucking bug from East Asia was introduced to the American landscape. The Hemlock Wooly Adelgid remained confined and posed relatively little threat until the 1980's when they began to spread, having catastrophic effects on the range of the Tsuga Canadensis, the most severe of which have been in the southern Appalachians. To see these Hemlock Wooly Adelgids a person can go to Shenandoah National Park where there are hundreds of hectares of effected trees. What used to be giants in the landscape can be seen now only as white ghosts towering among the green.
Unlike deciduous trees that lose their leaves these trees suck carbon out of the air year round. The effects of this change in the carbon cycle are not yet known; what is obvious is that eastern American ecosystems are changing dramatically. This is a memorial to the Tsuga Canadensis and America's eastern landscape."
Artist bios:
Cheraya Esters lives and works in Philadelphia PA. She creates wooden sculptures that deal with the blue-collar lifestyle and the evolution of labor in America. Esters' work consistently expresses the need for self-reliance and appreciation for natural materials.
Jeremy Tidd lives and works in Washington DC. He is half of the art collaborative the YAY team. Tidd is a professional gardener and draws inspiration from his intimate relationship with landscapes, both urban and wild.
NEXT EXHIBITION - GEORGE JENNE's "Don't Look Now!"
GEORGE JENNE

"Don't Look Now!"

January 15 - February 13, 2010
Opening reception: January 15, 7pm

"Don't Look Now" references movies and an abject nostalgia toward the artist's own childhood to create a mixed media installation that is compellingly cinematic. A gifted sculptor and draftsman, Jenne creates an environment similar to a movie set complete with a spectral pirate, exploding heads and a beastial Boy Scout.
Civilian Art Projects
1019 7th Street NW
Washington, DC 20001
202-607-3804
www.civilianartprojects.com

JEREMY KOST: Anyone Other Than Me …
TAYLOR BALDWIN: Living Fossil
MATTHEW SUTTON: Sounds a Grown Man Should not Make

January 16 – March 6, 2010

Conner Contemporary Art is very pleased to present concurrent solo exhibitions by three gallery artists: Jeremy Kost, Taylor Baldwin and Matthew Sutton.
 JEREMY KOST
Jeremy Kost's latest body of work, "Anyone Other Than Me...," reveals the intensely personal nature of his art. The growing notoriety of the artist's captivating photographs - of club kids, celebrities, transsexuals, and beautiful young men - issues from his prowess in the New York social scene, a deliberately cultivated capacity, which lies at the core of his creative process. Kost's odyssey into the inner-circles of glam sub-cultures began in Washington, DC, where he lived from 1999 to 2003. Now thin and fit, Kost describes himself as formerly being a "250-pound fat kid from Texas." Living in DC, he created a new body image, developing a lasting devotion to the gym, which was inspired, in part, by his fascination with gay nightclubs. During this time, Kost made frequent visits to New York, where he began to infiltrate night-life, using a Polaroid camera to interact with fashionable and well-connected people whom he may not have found accessible otherwise.
Since moving to New York six years ago, Kost has become an A-list guest at film premieres, art openings, and society parties. In the tradition of Andy Warhol, Kost documents cultural sub-currents, and records fleeting traces of celebrity. Like Nan Goldin, also from DC, Kost uses the camera lens to capture unpolished glimpses of human interaction. Kost presents his Polaroid output unedited, a strategy which, he asserts, "keeps the integrity of the whole moment unfolding before you." The directness of his medium foils the carefully constructed public identities of his subjects; It also exposes the essential substance of his art, which is not so much about the people he photographs, as it is about his own relation to them.
Focusing on access as the currency of the New York club set, Kost invites us to evaluate what roles our attitudes play in the cycle of desire, opportunity, and attainment that fuels the art world and shapes society in general. Kost will return to DC accompanied by several of the NYC club personalities featured in his work, through whom he will bring his images alive for the night. January 16th, after the gallery opening, Kost will stage a performance at the Rubell family's Capitol Skyline Hotel.
Kost's work was recently exhibited in Paris, France , New York, NY and will also be seen in an upcoming exhibition Spring 2010 at The Warhol Museum, Pittburgh, PA.
 TAYLOR BALDWIN
In "Living Fossil," sculptures and drawings by Conner/*gogo artist, Taylor Baldwin, explore personal, economic, and environmental relationships between people and objects. The artist explains, "The role I see for my objects and installations is of creating actual physical anomalies: finding the point where the physical world oscillates between raw material and known form, familiarity and disorientation." Baldwin sculpts familiar forms, such as chainsaws or skulls, out of various matter that he finds, salvages, barters, or steals. Inherent in his complex amalgams are material histories, anecdotes, and provenances, which posit a problematic framework of transaction and ownership.
Baldwin's sculpture "The Sun Never Sets" will be featured at the opening of new permanent space at the Tucson Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson, AZ in March 2010.
 MATTHEW SUTTON
In "Sounds a Grown Man Shouldn't Make," Conner/*gogo artist, Matthew Sutton, presents a selection of sounds, which, he explains, "I make on a regular basis. These sounds sometimes meet with disapproval from friends, family, and coworkers." Sutton elaborates, "Sound making is probably my longest established, most consistent, and maybe most personal activity." This will be Sutton's second solo exhibition with the gallery.
 >>>
There will be an opening night reception, Saturday, January 16th from 6 to 8pm. Artists in attendance.
Jeremy Kost performance + after-party at The Rubell Family's Capitol Skyline Hotel (video lounge), January 16th: 9pm –until. rsvp essential.
Also opening: Industry Gallery celebrates their Grand Opening with the first US solo show of NY-based artist Shlomo Harush and his functional pieces of sculptural art made from stainless steel and aluminum.1358 Florida Avenue, NE, Second Floor, Washington, DC 20002 / info@industrygallerydc.com
Additional information and online catalogue may be found at: http://www.connercontemporary.com/.
For further information or images, please contact the gallery @ 202-588-8750 or info@connercontemporary.com.
Conner Contemporary Art is located at 1358 Florida Avenue, NE –Washington, DC 20002 in the Atlas / H Street Historic District.
As The Big Thaw notes, “Traditional journalists often do not like to mix community organizing with journalism because it can contaminate the credibility of the reporting. However, as the competitive landscape shifts from scarcity to abundance of information and voices, the ability to “cover” the news objectively is no longer the most valuable key competency. Building active communities among users is exponentially growing in value.”

(Washington, DC) Mayor Adrian M. Fenty is making an urgent request to residents and visitors to stay off city streets until after the snow storm has passed.

“With the storm upgraded to a Blizzard, our snow team is reporting visibility in the District is very low,” said Mayor Fenty. “While I recognize people want to get out and enjoy the snow, there is a significant safety concern as pedestrians are walking along city streets instead of sidewalks.” “I am urging everyone to take extra precautions if you need to be out and if you do not, to please stay off the District roadways.”

Earlier today, Mayor Fenty along with District Department of Transportation Director Gabe Klein and Department of Public Works Director William O. Howland, Jr. asked people to stay home and for vehicles to stay off the roadways. Now they are hoping to keep all unnecessary activities off DC streets.

The National Weather Service recently categorized the system in the District as a Blizzard as snow is now reported to be falling at 2 inches per hour. Nearly another 12 inches of snow still expected to fall.

Metro has suspended all bus service including DDOT’s Circulator line.

For this exhibition, the gallery will present works exploring the nature of place and its inspiration on creative output. Works include three square-format Hanji paper over canvas pieces and four horizontal works on Hanji paper. There is a special emphasis on abstraction in many of these works. As Moon is currently an artist-in-residence at The Fabric Workshop in Philadelphia, the influence of textiles is subtly apparent as several works incorporate small embroidered areas, a departure for the artist.

Other News about Jiha Moon:
 · Jiha Moon in collaboration with Rachel Hayes in Mergers & Acquisitions, an exhibition curated by Stuart Horodner at Atlanta Contemporary Art Center Atlanta, GA through February 14, 2010.
 · Jiha Moon to be in a group exhibition at The Fabric Museum Workshop, Philadelphia, PA in late Spring 2010.
 · Jiha Moon is finalizing the details on a very limited edition silk scarf at The Fabric Museum Workshop based on Botan Garden, a work currently on view at Curator's Office. (see image above). Please contact gallery for details.
 · Jiha Moon's work, Jade Valley (2007), is featured on the cover of the Atlantan Magazine this month.
