Hall of Fame Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully will hold his first-ever Tweetcast, taking over @Dodgers for tonight’s game against the New York Yankees at 4:00 p.m. PST. Scully will have full control of @Dodgers and its 140-character tweets. Fans may join the conversation and ask him questions using the designated hashtag - #VinScully. The 140 Club on MLB.com (MLB.com/the140club) also will have a live stream of the best tweets from Scully’s Tweetcast.
Scully, 85, has been with the Dodgers for 64 seasons, the longest tenure of any broadcaster with one sports team in professional sports history. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1995, the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2009 and has been named National Sportscaster of the Year three times.

The Dodgers just unveiled a first look at the “retro style” Vin Scully bobblehead set for July 25 (vs. CIN, 7:10 p.m.) on Twitter via @Dodgers.

The first 50,000 fans in attendance on July 25 will receive a Vin Scully presented by Bank of America bobblehead. This marks the Hall of Famer’s second Dodger Stadium bobblehead. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.dodgers.com/tickets or by calling 866-DODGERS.

On his off day in Manhattan before his first career games in New York, rookie sensation Yasiel Puig spent his afternoon hanging out at the MLB Fan Cave. Puig played ping pong, shot some pool, hung out with the Cave Dwellers (including Dodger fan Aaron Roberts) and even filled out an All-Star ballot, showing fans where they can write his name in. By the time he left, there was a large crowd of fans outside waiting for a chance to meet Puig and get an autograph, and he gladly signed for everyone.

It's official! Dodgers to open 2014 regular season in Sydney, Australia

Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association jointly announced today that the 2014 Championship Season will begin in Sydney, Australia on March 22nd and 23rd, 2014, when the Los Angeles Dodgers will play MLB’s Opening Series vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. The groundbreaking event was announced by the Premier of New South Wales, Barry O’Farrell, at a press conference in Sydney today, which was attended by Tom Nicholson, Director of MLB’s Australia & Oceania Office, and Tim Slavin, Chief of Business Affairs and Senior Counsel for the MLBPA.

The 2014 Opening Series featuring the National League West rivals will be Major League Baseball’s first regular season games to be staged in Australia. MLB has previously opened seasons in Monterrey, Mexico (1999); Tokyo, Japan (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012); and San Juan, Puerto Rico (2001).

Baseball’s history in Australia goes back more than 150 years. The 2014 Opening Series will mark the 100th anniversary of exhibition games played by the Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants at the same traditional sports venue where the 2014 Opening Series will be played. The White Sox defeated the Giants, 5-4, before 10,000 fans on January 3, 1914. Major League Baseball’s history at the Sydney Cricket Ground dates to December 1888, when Spalding’s World Tourists played a series of exhibition games, including a December 15, 1888 contest that attracted 5,500 spectators. The Sydney Cricket Ground will be fully renovated to a baseball configuration and Major League standards in order to host MLB’s 2014 Opening Series.

“Major League Baseball is thrilled that the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers will open our 2014 regular season in Sydney, Australia,” Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig said. “The globalization of our game continues to be paramount to Major League Baseball, and Australia is an essential part of our long-term efforts to grow the sport. We look forward to writing an exciting new chapter in international baseball history at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground next March.”

“The players are excited about opening the 2014 season in Sydney, and they view this series as an important step in furthering their commitment to help increase the global popularity of baseball,” said MLBPA Executive Director Michael Weiner. “We thank the Australian Baseball Federation and fans for welcoming us to their country. We anticipate the 2014 Opening Series in Sydney will prove to be a memorable experience for players and fans alike.”

“The Dodgers are absolutely ecstatic to be opening the 2014 championship season in Sydney, one of the greatest cities in the world,” Dodger President and CEO Stan Kasten said. “Our organization is committed to growing the game of baseball internationally and I’m eager to kick off our season in one of the most exciting and rapidly developing baseball markets on earth.”

"We are honored that Major League Baseball selected our franchise to participate in the first-ever series in Australia,” Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall said. “The Diamondbacks take great pride in promoting our brand, as well as the greatest sport, globally. Being at the forefront of spreading international goodwill on this prominent stage is a feat that we enthusiastically embrace and accept."
Both the Dodgers and the D-backs will play Spring Training games in Arizona on Sunday, March 16th before departing that evening and arriving in Sydney on the morning of Tuesday, March 18th. An evening game that will begin Major League Baseball’s 2014 regular season will be scheduled for Saturday, March 22nd, followed by an afternoon game on Sunday, March 23rd. The D-backs will be considered the home Club in both games. The Australian sports marketing agency Moore Sports will act as promoter of the games.

Australia has produced 31 Major League players all-time, including 28 who were born in the country, led by 19th Century infielder Joe Quinn, whose Major League career dates back to 1884. Following Quinn with the most career Major League games among Australian-born players are former Milwaukee Brewers catcher David Nilsson, a 1999 National League All-Star; former longtime infielder Craig Shipley, currently an assistant to D-backs general manager Kevin Towers who, as a member of the Dodgers in 1986, became the first Australian player to play in the Majors since Quinn; former lefty reliever Graeme Lloyd, a two-time World Series Champion with the New York Yankees; 10-year reliever Grant Balfour, who is currently the closer for the Oakland Athletics; and current Dodger reliever Peter Moylan, who was called up to the Club on May 31st after seven years with the Atlanta Braves. Seven of the 28 all-time Australian-born players were born in Sydney.

Moylan is the fifth Australian-born player to wear the Dodger uniform. The first four Australian players in their history were Shipley (1986-1987); pitcher Jeff Williams (1999-2002); pitcher Luke Prokopec (2000-2001); and outfielder Trent Oeltjen (2010-2011), who made his Major League debut as a member of the D-backs in 2009. Balfour and fellow pitcher Liam Hendriks of the Minnesota Twins were the two Australian-born players on 2013 Opening Day rosters. In addition to the 34-year-old Moylan, Melbourne native Travis Blackley, a teammate of Balfour with the American League West Champion A’s in 2012, now pitches for the Houston Astros.

Sydney, a city of 5.5 million people, has hosted many major international sporting events, including the 2000 Summer Olympic Games, the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final, the 2009 World Masters Games, the Bledisloe Cup in Rugby Union, the Ashes cricket test series between England and Australia as well as the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

Major League Baseball has supported the new Australian Baseball League along with the Australian Baseball Federation since 2010. The League reflects the continuation of a long-term partnership between MLB and the ABF to significantly grow the sport in Australia. The strategic alliance between the two noted sporting bodies was first formalized with the 2001 establishment of the MLB Australian Academy Program (MLBAAP), which has served as a model for ensuing international MLB Academies.

The six-team Australian Baseball League features homegrown talent, including professionals who compete in North America and Asia, and many players who hail from outside Australia, spanning as many as 12 countries in one season. The league’s 40-game season runs opposite the baseball calendar in the Northern Hemisphere – from November through January, followed by playoffs that extend to February. Following its inaugural season, a record nine Australians took the field for MLB Clubs in 2011. Outside the Olympics, the ABL All-Star Game and Championship Series had the largest television audiences ever for a baseball game played on Australian soil.

Dodgers agree to terms with top two Draft picks

The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced the signings of four selections from the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, including their first round pick, Jacksonville (FL) University right-handed pitcher Chris Anderson, and their second-round selection, University of Minnesota left-hander Tom Windle. The club also announced the signings of 12th-rounder Adam Law, a third baseman out of Brigham Young University, and their 26th-round pick Thomas Taylor, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Kansas. Anderson and Windle will attend tonight’s 7:10 p.m. game between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks and will be available to the media in the Dodger dugout at 5:00 p.m.

Anderson, a 6-foot-4, 225-pounder, went 7-5 with a 2.49 ERA and three complete games in 14 starts this season for the Dolphins, earning second team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors. The 20-year-old junior limited opposing hitters to a .231 batting average with a conference-best 101 strikeouts in 104.2 innings pitched.

Windle, 21, went 6-4 with a 2.14 ERA in 14 starts for Minnesota as a junior in 2013, including tossing the first 9.0-inning no-hitter in Minnesota history on March 8 against Western Illinois.

Law, whose father, Vance, played 11 big league seasons from 1980-91 (1988 All-Star) and grandfather, Vernon, won the 1960 Cy Young Award with the Pittsburgh Pirates, led the Cougars in hits (76), stolen bases (14), batting average (.365) and on-base percentage (.440) as a junior team captain at BYU in 2013. He was recognized with All-West Coast Conference First Team honors in addition to an Academic All-WCC selection this past year.

Taylor tied for the Kansas team lead with six wins and posted a 2.33 ERA in 14 starts this season to earn a 2013 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection. Taylor struck out 66 batters to climb into fourth on the Kansas career strikeouts list at 237, and limited opposing batters to a .238 average this season.

I'm still getting cards. Just haven't posted anything here. I will. I promise. I'm hoping I can post something relating to cards every morning. Or at least 3-4 times a week.

I got most of the 'Dodgers' base cards. Trying to complete a few sets of my favorite inserts. And always looking around to see which cards bring my attention.

Bowman selected their top 100 prospects and produced a 100 card set. You can find these cards in the 2013 Bowman packs.

#58 is Yasiel Puig.

I got this card last month. I was shocked that it was only running for a few bucks. Try to get this card now, it will cost you at least $45. I'm serious. Look for it.

The Los Angeles Dodgers today recalled outfielder Alex Castellanos and right-handed pitcher Chris Withrow from Triple-A Albuquerque and placed outfielder Scott Van Slyke on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder bursitis and also optioned infielder Justin Sellers to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Withrow, who will wear No. 44, will be making his Major League debut and has gone 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 22 relief appearances with the Isotopes. The 24-year-old last pitched on Friday, striking out three of the four batters he faced, and has not allowed a run in his last seven appearances (7.2 IP). Withrow, who was selected by the Dodgers in the first round (20th overall) in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, has only allowed earned runs in two of his 22 appearances this year.

Castellanos, 26, has a .270 batting average with eight steals, nine home runs and 28 RBI in 43 games with Albuquerque this season. Castellanos went 4-for-23 (.174) with a triple, a homer and three RBI in 16 big league games with the Dodgers last year and tied for the Dodger team lead with both four home runs and 11 RBI in 29 Cactus League games this spring.

Van Slyke is batting .221 with six home runs, five doubles and 11 RBI in 24 games with the Dodgers, while Sellers posted a .188 batting average with a home run, a double and two RBI in 27 contests for the club.

Los Angeles Dodgers rookie outfielder Yasiel Puig, who enjoyed a historic debut week, has been named National League Player of the Week for the period ending June 9th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In his first week in the Major Leagues, Puig led baseball with 27 total bases and was tied for the Major League lead with four home runs. His .964 slugging percentage was second-best in the Majors and was the top mark among National Leaguers. The 22-year-old native of Cienfuegos, Cuba also ranked among league leaders with a .464 (13-for-28) batting average (2nd), 10 RBI (3rd), 13 hits (3rd), and a .483 on-base percentage (7th). Puig had multi-hit efforts in five of his seven games during the week.

Puig made his Major League debut on Monday, June 3rd, going 2-for-4 in the Dodgers leadoff slot while recording his first outfield assist in game-ending fashion, doubling-up San Diego’s Chris Denorfia at first base with a throw from deep right field to preserve a 2-1 victory. Puig became the first Dodger to record a multi-hit performance in his first big league game since Russell Martin went 2-for-4 in his debut on May 5, 2006. On Tuesday, Puig went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs and five RBI in his second Major League contest, leading the Dodgers to a 9-7 win over the visiting Padres. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Puig joined Dino Restelli as the only players in Major League history to have recorded a two-homer, five-RBI game within the first two games of his career. Restelli accomplished the feat on June 15, 1949 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. On Thursday, Puig went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI on the way to a 5-0 victory in the first game of a four-game set with the N.L. East-leading Atlanta Braves. The young phenom clubbed his first career grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving the Dodger bullpen a five-run cushion as they closed out a 7.0-inning scoreless performance by starter Zack Greinke. In Friday’s matchup between the two clubs, Puig’s game-tying solo homer in the sixth inning was the only run the Dodgers scored off Braves starter Paul Maholm in an eventual 2-1 extra-inning victory for Los Angeles. With the homer, Puig became just the second player since 1900 to hit four home runs in his first five games, joining Mike Jacobs of the 2005 New York Mets (Elias Sports Bureau). The solo shot gave Puig 10 RBI through his first five career games, tying a Major League record (also: Washington’s Danny Espinosa in 2010 and Pittsburgh’s Jack Merson in 1951). With his first Player of the Week honor, Puig becomes the first rookie to win for his debut week since Baltimore’s Manny Machado (A.L.) (August 6-12, 2012). In addition, he is the first Dodger rookie to win the award since Andre Ethier (July 3-9, 2006).

Other noteworthy performances last week included Carlos Beltran (.333, 2 HR, 8 RBI), Matt Carpenter (.455, 15 H, HR, 5 RBI, .526 OBP) and Matt Holliday (.407, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .778 SLG) of the St. Louis Cardinals; San Diego’s Kyle Blanks (.407, 11 H, 3 HR, 7 RBI, .852 SLG) and Everth Cabrera (.485, 16 H, 8 SB, .514 OBP); Atlanta’s Jason Heyward (.414, 12 H, HR, 5 R, .469 OBP) and Kris Medlen (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 12 SO, 13.2 IP, hit a home run on 6/8); and Colorado’s Troy Tulowitzki (.429, 12 H, 4 HR, 8 RBI, .929 SLG).

The Los Angeles Dodgers today recalled infielder Justin Sellers from Triple-A Albuquerque after the club optioned right-hander Matt Magill to Albuquerque following yesterday’s game. Sellers made the Opening Day roster and batted .191 with a homer and two RBI in 26 games with the Dodgers before being optioned on May 8. With the Isotopes, the 27-year-old batted .337 with a homer and 17 RBI in 24 games, including a .321 mark (9-for-28) with runners in scoring position.

Magill made a spot start for Los Angeles yesterday against Atlanta and took the loss in the Dodgers’ 8-1 defeat, falling to 0-2 with a 6.51 ERA in six big league starts this season.
