History of Bauer

You may have seen my previous article on ringware, and how much I love and adore old pieces of pottery. Today I'm talking about Bauer Art Pottery. Many people immediately think California...but did you know it originated in Louisville, Kentucky? That's right, the J.A. Bauer Pottery Company dates back to the 1880's, and soon the company would move from Kentucky to Los Angeles, Producing colorful pieces, planters, vases, bowls, cups, plates, caraffes, and flower pots into the 1960's. Many books have been written about the subject and some pieces are worth upwards of $1000 each. Modern day operations include reproduction of classic pieces and additionally some new. Ironically, the new factory is just minutes from the location of the old vintage plant.

Rarity and Values

The Early Bauer Pottery lion's head flower pot above, measures 13.5" tall and is available at VinceBravo for $350. It is getting harder to find the art pottery like this in pristine shape. Over time use of flower pots and vases led to cracking, chipping, and crazing. You would be surprised to know that some vases and pieces of Bauer pottery could sell upwards for $1000!

Colorful Additions to Your Home

Perhaps the reason why I like Bauer is the fact that it's a colorful addition to your home. I have highlighted some of my favorite Bauer things below, and I really think this is the prettiest Etsy Treasury I ever made. So pretty I'm going to keep a snapshot of it, for when people buy all the pieces and the treasury is gone. I will still have this lovely picture.

Original Antique Tabzimt in silver, enamel and coral - Algerian Late 19C, $250

Taking a break from the cottage chic and farmhouse Martha Stewart-y finds on Etsy, I realized the super old and historic lies somewhere within. Take for instance, Original Antiques on Etsy, who is featuring this gorgeous coral Jewelry from Great Kabylia, Algeria. This "Tabzimt" is an old world brooch, they were very popular in the 18th and 19th century dating back to Celtic times and ancient days. this from Alergia has a very distinctive style. Intricate patterns are combined with colorful enameled ornaments and coral beads. The bright blue, yellow and green applied in small compartments makes this jewelry appear rich and decorative. WIht the sontes and enameling intact, this is a priceless part of history and should be in a museum.

This Sterling Silver Cigarette Case is gorgeous and shows well for it's age. $760

Owner Ramzi Aydi of Amman, Jordan isn't quite sure how old this silver Niello cigarette case is, but based on the primitive etchings and shape of the bird it has to be at least 80+ years old. It is odd that you find such lovely items preserved so well.

Silver Authentic Antique Kurdish Jambiya Dagger Mid 19C, $950

Perhaps the highlight of this ship is the Silver Jambiya dagger of the Kurdish people. This is an Authentic Piece from East Turkey, early – mid 19C. Look at the double edged curved blade with a central rib, forged from high contrast Wootz (Watered, Damascus) steel. It has an "I" shaped black horn grip with silver wire wrap. Wood scabbard covered with Islamic design engraved Silver. Total length 15 inches.

I scour the web for all kinds of vintage items, antiques, and collectibles. Recently I stumbled across this Vintage Auctions and Collectibles website which I love! It's a cool blog featuring different vintage items or collectibles for sale--which could be anything you can think of! Just today I found industrial antiques to vintage dinnerware. There are some vintage Hummel figurines and even Michael Jackson vintage items (I was shocked to see that one vintage auction for a stuffed monkey had almost 8000 views. I guess vintage monkeys are a hot item!!!) I really like this collectible belt buckle made from an old Pabst blue ribbon can, super cool!

Get Vintage with Vibio Curate Your Life

Hello, what's this? VIBIO: A new way of collecting, curating, selling, trading, and buying vintage? Oh yes it is! I had to check it out, so I registered for an account on Vibio. (It is FREE!) Now I will explain exactly what it is. (Move over Pinterest. I'm hooked. )

I registered for a free account on Vibio right though my Facebook. It's free and easy to share your wants and desires. Oh how we all have them.

In a nutshell, Vibio allows you to create and share collections of things you want and have. You can adjust your privacy settings so only you or your contacts can view your stuff, it's up to you.

Unofficially: I think the easiest way to explain it is unofficially is a Etsy Style Treasury Alternative to Craigslist for Pinterest type people who like to show their wants and haves. FINALLY! The best of everything! Now what on earth am I talking about?

I set up my Vibio Bio, and then went to the demographics tab to put my location (All optional).

It's a place to share your Wants and Haves by uploading pictures of your "stuff". This can be anything not just antiques and vintage but that's what I'm using it for since Vintage rules. Why would you want to do this? First off, you can keep tabs on what your friends and family think are hip and cool. A great way to get Aunt Linda something for her birthday. You can see what trends are developing. Be nosey if you will. But also flaunt your own products. Notice my cool glove molds right here:

Curate: Trade, Sell, Buy on Vibio

This is a free site for curating which makes it a free marketplace for trading, buying, or selling items too. You can make offers on items that you want that other have. In other words, they have it, you want it, so make an offer!

Buy/Trade/Purchase Local

You can also shop locally by the demographics which eliminates the cost for ungodly shipping (bye bye big postal service guy who keeps dropping my stuff!) It's sort of an old school way of selling and trading (locally never got easier, goodbye scary Craigslist people, hello cool Vibio users)!

Buy/Trade/Sell Worldwide

You don't have to just sell local, you can sell anywhere you want. It's up to you. Either way you add your "have" and people will add your "have" to their "want" and therefore these are potential buyers. They can then make offers to you for your wares.

Vibio is a great alternative for going thru these big conglomerates like Ebay anymore. If you decide to do any type of selling, that's between you and the buyer to work out the payment details and Vibio is not really involved. You can read more about it in their Vibio faq HERE!

Vintage Typewriter Romance Industrial Bliss

Imagine my surprise when I saw an excerpt a few weeks back on Brandy and Kowalski's vintage typewriters and repair shop in Brooklyn, NY, I caught my excerpt off the Sunday Morning program. They aren't the only one who loves old typewriters. Truth be told I am so glad they are promoting use of these romantic pieces of industrial bliss. There's nothing like putting in a sheet of paper and hap-hazardly typing a letter to your partner about how much you love them on one of these old hunks of metal.

Truth is, that could be a problem if you don't have any spell correction ribbon, as most of the older models didn't have spell correction and those who did are probably dried up. I wish I could afford to have this baby laying around my office, this is a gorgeous Pink Royal typewriter priced at $475.00 on Etsy by JoeVintage. Truth be told that's not a bad price, it comes with original case and owner's manual and pink is VERY HARD TO FIND. If you think the one below looks just like the one above, think again, this one is just about PERFECTLY MINT and this retails for $575.00 from JoeVintage on Etsy also. Sigh, I'm in love.......

No matter how you turn her, she's a beauty.

Now typewriter collectors can really get into some strange territory when you consider the many years of typewriters being made, from the ones that are so heavy hunks of metal that you can't pick up to the kids' toy models made of metal and plastic, that you can't keep up with . Just when I thought I have seen every possible kiddie typewriter up pops this one:

Strange indeed but to a typewriter collector this would be a cool addition to a collection. This kiddie one is very colorful and available for $164.00 on Etsy at Recy shop. What a rare find! I find that most collectors are opting for either adding the toy typewriters to their toy collectors and their typewriter collections so it's double in demand these days.

As for regular typewriters, this big boy is from the 1940's and available for $350.00 from PoetryofObjects. Now some may agree that the 50s to the 70s mod colors and designs, the pinks and blues are sought after as are the bright orange, red and yellow modern colors so why would someone buy this giant hunk of metal? Quite simply put, they are becoming extinct. Next time you try to find one, this is all you will have, OUCH!

Today I stumbled across the DesignzByRuth Etsy shop. Ruth designs some of her own handmade jewelry which often mixed vintage components in it. Her selection of vintage jewelry in itself is amazing. Her shop is all the way in Israel, but shipping to the rest of the world (right now is FREE). Her items are inexpensive, and unique.

This would look great around my neck.

I am always curious to see what relics lie in other countries, buried treasure of yesteryear. Ruth has found a lot of pendants, estate jewelry, and lovely lockets that you just don't see everyday. Unique treasures are hidden here.

Lynn is from Dickinson, Texas and her southern belle style shows in these lovely creations. I would be privileged to wear one of her items. They are couture all their own and her items sell rather quickly making them a hot commodity. In fact no sooner did I post up a dress on the Etsy Recycler's Guild site last week did it sell out of her store.

Lynn pushes the envelope on design. In fact I think if she entered one of those "American's Next Top Designer" shows she could win. She envisions something for clothing like no other designer. You really need to tell anyone you know who loves vintage clothing or one of a kind pretty dresses, jackets, or blouses. Not all clothing does she upcycle, some vintage she finds are just lovely on their own!

OH SO CUTE. A great doorstop or something to hold books in place. Not sure if this is a travel iron, or was a toy , but it's a heavy tiny iron. From wood red handle to silver base it's approx 4.5", the iron bottom is approx 5.5" in length. Has original plug which is in good shape. I had it plugged in and it appears to work ; but based on age I would not recommend using it without proper warning......

Brace yourself for vintage clothing galore. I don't know what I love more, the styles and selection that Vagabondia Vintage selects, or the way their photos are so fun! Check this one out, this old Raggedy Ann and Andy doll case has been giving new life. What a great way to repurpose old doll cases, into functional and fabulous handbags. Can you imagine donning this number and walking up the street in your Sunday best? I just love it!

Vintage Porcelain Glove Mold Giveaway FREE

Yet another free giveaway! You hear me talking about glove molds all the time, well now I've got one up for grabs. These retail for $32+ and up on sites, and they are super cool. You will either your choice or medium or large (not much difference in them really) . The mediums are on average 14" high and a nice hunk of porcelain. The large is not much difference, though the fingers a a bit wider. Both sizes were rescued from an old factory overstock.

These type molds were made by (now defunct) General Porcelain of Trenton NJ, and is at least 25 years old. Glove molds are a great piece of American History and can be used to hold anything such as braclets, necklaces, knitted products, photos invitations, decorations, Christmas ornaments, or just sat around to look cool and industrial. Rings probably won't fit on the fingers but you can get creative on what you want to do with them. WARNING: GLOVE MOLDS ARE ADDICTING.

First of all THANK YOU all so much for entering my contest for the Italian Music Box. I had so many entries that I was in shock. My handwriting worsened as I went along! I may have had some dyxlexia going on in there too I was so tired of writing names, although I received 360plussomething entries some people had multiple entries! So the count was near or over 400 that's a lot of names!

I used old paper and wrote all the names down. Holy Moses that's a lot of names!

I cut them all up into pieces and dumped them into a bowl.

I think I got sloppier with the names as the sheets went on!

Then I tried to film myself drawing it but that is really hard to do! I will be sending an email to the winner shortly, but you saw it here first! ATTN LOSERS: You still be a winner. Watch the video and learn something and do stay tuned as I will be doing a giveaway for a glove mold real soon.

Tea Party Tea Time Vintage Style Virtual Party Invitation Etsy Love

Tonight it was snowing in Baltimore, and I wanted so badly to go make a cup of tea. You see, here in America I was raised on coffee (sigh), but tea is something I consider a real treat! Unfortunately for me, it is a quick drop-in-cup and micowave deal (or if I have the time, hot water brewed in a pot and dumped in a cup). Tonight I made Stash English Breakfast Tea and added some mint leaves microwave-style. I imagine the Queen would be very upset with me and send me away to my room to rot.

Oh how I dreamt of and wished as a child I was raised in England or Canada so I'd be more in tune with tea, tea parties, and tea time! The sound of a tea kettle...I feel as though I was robbed by not having that in my daily life. In fact, I'm going to say to heck with missing out as a child, and have a virtual tea party right now. I can and I will! So, you are invited and I hope you'll join me. This is probably what I'd wear to tea time, because I'd want to look the part.

You see, I do believe there is something lovely and romantic about the whole tea-drinking experience. I can't wait to see my tea friends and catch up on old times. A vintage girls day out, only with good tea. I have arrived at your place, as you are hosting the party. It's warm there. No snow at all. I see you have set the table oh-so-lovely. Sigh, just what I had imagined:

English it is! So after the tea bag is sitting in the cup out comes the hot water. Swish, I can hear it pouring. Steeping in the cup I am hoping it finishes quickly, as I am so ready to taste a cup. I'm a bit messy, so I'm going to need a tea bag holder, like a pro tea drinker would, but I am not sure if that's an American thing or how they really did it back then. I would imagine something is needed to put my tea bag on so that it won't mess up your beautiful tablecloth. Oh no....something in my virtual tea party is going incredibly wrong, I am imagining them as tiny cows (probably since my husband is some famous bbq guy, hint of reality is interfering with my ability to imagine a dainty tea holder. Oh no! Cows!)

WW2 Watch Makes It's Way Home Metal Detecting

I was trying to use my metal detector the other day, with no luck. Even with the manual, I'm not very good at figuring it out. I went onto the (Friendly) Metal Detecting Forums for some advice. I then found this wonderful story from a military relic digger in the UK. Not only did he find an amazing watch but he went on a quest to do ample research and make sure it got back to the family where it belonged. Talk about a good deed. I'm in awe of him. I don't even know his name, but he is from the Midlands, England, and this is his youtube channel. He has the upmost appreciation for veterans and I thank him for that.
