Here are some of the ways in which Twitter complements and integrates with Periscope:

• All Periscope broadcasts are announced on Twitter when they begin
• A pulsating red “Live on Periscope” notice is present in your Twitter Profile while you are live streaming
• Your Twitter followers can turn on Live Video Notifications to be alerted on Twitter whenever you go live on Periscope
• Viewers can easily share broadcast publicly on Twitter from within Periscope while watching
• Your past broadcasts can be discovered through Twitter Search

Create a Periscope Twitter List of Live Streamers

Twitter Lists can be a great way of creating ‘channels’ for viewing particular types of content on Periscope. For example, I’ve created an Aussie Live Streamers Twitter list that is useful for viewing Periscope broadcasts from Australia.

You could even create a Twitter List of all you regular viewers so that you can dip into that list from time to time to connect with them outside of your broadcasts.

As a Periscope broadcaster, a large part of your audience is already active on Twitter. Are you there connecting with them?

Twitter’s short-form video platform Vine will close down in a couple of months and after that time your well-crafted masterpieces will no longer be accessible, not for viewing or for download. Vine has assured us that we’ll be given enough warning so that we can download our Vines before it shuts down the service. Still, that’s quite a blow to those of us who’ve stuck with Vine of the past three years or so.

Vine was more than just some fun thing that people got really arty with in their spare time. In no time at all Vine was producing celebrities that would make money on speaking tours, just like YouTube.

And businesses were on to it too, with some quite successfully. Lowes Home Improvement store, for example, produced short tips with very skillful stop-gap animation commercials.

Earning money using Vine for promotion

Like many others, I made good money from Vine. An Australian app developer approached Vintuitive to promote a new mobile app RWND, which coincidentally, was also a short form video app, this one with an even shorter duration than Vine’s 6 seconds. It was clear that Vine would be the perfect place to promote such an app, and so small 6-second commercials were created every week that promoted the last week’s highest viewed RWNDs to the Vine audience.

Until the news yesterday I was delivering another series of weekly lessons on optimising your use of social media and technology, called Six Second Tech.

How to prepare for Vine’s closure

With the news of Vine closing down soon, those of us who’ve created a lot of content on Vine would like to keep it and are wondering how they will do that. Should we download each Vine, one at a time? Or will Vine provide us with a bulk download tool? In their announcement on Medium, Vine said that they’d let us know soon how we can download our Vines.

Any time a service that you’ve put a lot of time and effort into goes away like this it reinforces some important points. As a business, your main marketing focus should be on promoting your website instead of another 3rd party platform. It’s also a reminder that whenever creating evergreen content, that is, content that you could potentially reuse, you need to ensure you have a solid content strategy in place.

A current Content Strategy is vital for all businesses

Any business using social media is regularly creating content, whether they realise it or not.

Having a current Content Strategy means that all your content is stored and organised while it’s being created. When a service like Vine goes away you can rest easy in the confidence that you already have all the content backed up and cataloged in a way that is easy to access and repurpose.

Use your website as the central hub of your business

While it is beneficial for businesses to be active on social media, it is important that your own website remains the focal point of your actions. Post your content to these social media sites but embed each post in your website and direct people to your platform whenever appropriate instead of promoting Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc. That way, when the platform closes down, as Vine has just announced it will do, you simply move the file to a different source and alter the embed code on the page of your website. By doing so, you are not having to redirect anything and all the traffic will continue to flow into your website.

In the case of Six Second Tech, for example, I had uploaded the weekly videos to both Vine and Instagram and embedded a blog post for each week’s tutorial. It is now an easy process for me to go back to the blog posts on Vintuitive and swap the Vine embed code with the Instagram embed code.

In fact, I have just done that while writing this post. It took just a few minutes.

Twitter continues to strengthen its integration with its live streaming video app Periscope with a new feature, a link to your Periscope profile that flashes “LIVE on Periscope” with a pulsating red Periscope icon right in your Twitter Profile!

This means that anyone looking at your Twitter page will see the flashing red “LIVE on Periscope” indicator when you are broadcasting and can click it to go straight to your Periscope account.

How to Set up the Periscope link on your Twiter profile

It’s really easy to set up right from your Twitter account, here’s how:

Steps:

1. Click Edit Profile
2. Click Show my Periscope profile
3. Click Save

Show your Twitter followers when you are live on Periscope by adding the “View on Periscope” link to your Twitter profile. Note that this is for your Twitter Web profile only, and will not display on mobile versions of Twitter.

Studies suggest that more people prefer to get customer support via Social Media than over phone and email. Social interaction with customers leads to increased brand loyalty and sales.

Integrate Twitter into your business’ customer support

We’ve already seen how to add a Twitter Message button to your website so that you can receive enquiries via Twitter’s private message system. This week we look at some new tools that Twitter has recently given us to improve our customer support services.

Here are the new features we’ll be adding:

Show that you provide support in Twitter search results

When users search Twitter for your business a label will be displayed to show that your Twitter account provides support. This label also shows up when someone @mentions you.

Show times of availability on your Twitter profile

Indicate to your customers when they can expect a response from you by displaying what days and times you are most likely to respond right in your Twitter profile.

Add a Message button to your Twitter profile

A Message button will also be prominently displayed on your Twitter profile which is a great Call to Action, prompting customers to contact your business directly and privately.

How to add these new customer support tools

These features can be accessed via the new Customer Support Settings page on your Twitter Dashboard.

Just like when we saw how to add a Twitter Message button to your website, you must enable the setting that allows anyone to contact you via Direct Message (DM).

Steps:

1. Visit your Twitter Dashboard at dashboard.twitter.com
2. Click on your avatar and then on Settings
3. Tick Receive Direct Messages from anyone
4. Tick Show that my account provides support
5. Add what times you are most available to respond to enquiries
6. Add what days you are available to provide support
7. Click Save

Make it easier for customers to contact you by indicating your availablity with Twitter’s new Customer Support features.

Now you can choose to be notified only when they go live on Periscope instead of every time they tweet.

Here’s how:

Steps:
1. Go to the Twitter profile of the user
2. Tap on the bell
3. Tap on Only Tweet with live video

Alternatively, you can choose All tweets to receive a notification every time they tweet.
