high and dry
1. Lit. [for water] to recede and leave someone untouched. The waters receded and left us high and dry.
2. Fig. to leave someone unsupported and unable to maneuver; to leave someone helpless.

“High & Dry” isn’t just the name of a Radiohead song, but it is the name of this awesome custom Coarse Jaws Loser figure, by Task One for a KR Boardie. Love the attention to detail, especially on the back tattoo, and the conversion from figure to sculpture is outstanding.

Quim Tarrida | “IF YOU BLINK, YOU’LL MISS IT”

Opening: Friday December 9th, 7-11 pm
Dec. 9th – Dec. 30th, 2011

TAG | Toy Art Gallery

“If You Blink, You’ll Miss It” is the artist Quim Tarrida’s first exhibition in the United States. This project is part of the Subheroes Project, which includes a large part of the artist’s multi-disciplinary production from the past few years. The title is derived from a film industry jargon term, which is used to refer to subliminal images inserted in some sequences, and which are imperceptible to the naked eye.

The exhibition consists of an approach to the personal universe of Quim Tarrida, which he himself calls the Subcutanian World, a microcosm inhabited by strange, metamorphic and viral beings, true antiheroes on the verge of the uncanny. Projections of the self or of Neo-pop alter egos, ultra-world characters, compose a unique and prodigious imaginary, and attain form through a series of sculptural pieces, limited ceramic editions, and drawings, notable among which are classical pieces from his iconography, such as Subsub Family, The Soldier, Subcutanian Ninja, Oh Gaar, or his latest productions, Relaxing in Blue and The Monkey Knows.

Quim Tarrida (Barcelona 1967) is a multi-displinary artist whose art production, beyond work related to music and performance, includes photography, video, painting and sculpture, where he also establishes links to the universe of lost childhood. An irretrievable childhood opposed to an adult world in which the oneiric imaginary no longer has a relevant role, and in which the dominant game is established through economic and political interests that lead to power struggles. In short, a world in which play is presented as something far removed from the sweetened image which normally surrounds childhood. Thus, the artist emphasizes the closeness that can exist between play and violence, between reality and fiction. Tarrida works on the limit which swings between the ludic component of the simulacrum of the toy and the military artifact, revealing the weak border which separates one reality from the other.

In his first official event since being voted off a popular reality TV show, The Sucklord will offer for sale selections from a new body of work paying homage to the Occupy Wall Street movement.

What: The Sucklord presents OCCUPY CYBERTRON
Where: END OF CENTURY, 237 Eldridge Street, NY, NY 10002
When: December 7th, 2011: 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

OCCUPY CYBERTRON will serve as the launch event for a new line of collectible “art toys” inspired by the Occupy Wallstreet Movement. On December 7th, the Sucklord, acting as the leader of the Decepticons, will defend his vast fortunes against a solidarity protest of Autobots, which represent the 99%, in a conceptual performance art piece that will “occupy” the End of Century retail space and gallery in New York City’s Lower East Side.

Longtime Sucklord co-conspirator The Crystal Pharoah will appear for a DJ set, and Beerlao has joined the cause as a drink sponsor.

According to The Sucklord,

“In the spirit of the 1% that an evil supervillain such as myself represents, I thought the timing was ripe for Suckadelic to appropriate the Occupy Wall Street movement for my own material gain… so I made action figures of the protesters and the masters of the universe who financially control them. They make great Christmas gifts.”

A small batch of limited edition OCCUPY CYBERTRON trading cards have been produced for the event by a collaboration between Suckadelic, Appro Nation (Creators of “The Art Hustle” contemporary art and artist trading cards) and Sidekick Media (manufacturer of the Suckadelic Suckpax trading card series).

A free pack of cards will be given to anyone who attends the event in a costume relevant to the theme. The Sucklord will also be offering a limited quantity of custom art toy action figures in 8”, 3 ¾” and 3” scales for sale.

‘Icons’ is the debut show from The Hang Gang – The Visual Culture Outlet. They have gathered together the best of british toy customisers, from legends such as Pete Fowler and Matt Lunartik JOnes to nu-school stars Jon Paul Kaiser, Squink and Map Map, for a group event of immense proportions. Also by special invitation we have US super talent Drilone and from Germany, the awesome Bruno Orbit. The Anchoring theme of the show is simply ‘Icons’ and we have left how that’s interpreted firmly in the hands and minds of the artists.

This will be one hell of a party, besides the art exhibition there will be live painting from the likes of Guy McKinley, Hugh Rose and Tom J Newell. Music will be provided by upcoming, Leeds indie pop band, Escort Knights and brining his eclectic mix of party grooves is J.Cub, head honcho of E.A.R Recordings. There will be tons of giveaways, a fully licensed bar, pop up store and much more…

All the pieces from the show will be available to purchase on the night on a first come, first served basis. So if you want to snag something by your favourite artist they suggest you get down early. Any remaining customised artworks will be available via their online store: www.thehanggang.co.uk after the exhibition has finished.

The show artwork was created by the amazing, Leeds based illustrator, Drew Millward. It is going to be produced by the team over at whiteduckscreenprint.co.uk, as an A2, 3 colour screen print with an edition size of 100. It will be available for purchase at the show.

Curator and Hang Gang owner, Barry Darnell said,

“Why do all the cool parties have to take place in LA, NYC or LDN? We thought it was about time the North of England got some love and in particular, Leeds. People say nothing like this ever happens around here, well all that’s about to change!”

To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of the show poster simply follow the Hang Gang on twitter: @thehanggang between now and the 28th October and they will pick 2 lucky winners at random.

The second week of ZAP holds tons of gory surprises including removable weapons, zombie animals, and one very famous Cuban dictator! Figure pairs range from $30-$60 and come housed in their own 6″ wooden coffin- seen here for the first time!
Frankie “The Timebandit” is a gangster superhero. He can travel through time, stop time, and is the supreme bandit of time. His powerful “time travel” watches allow him to break the space-time continuum in order to fight evil and tyranny. He seeks out others who have potential for “time travel” who also possess gangster superpowers of their own. He slings watches to these select few. They become the chosen ones who will join to form a legue of time traveling, gangster superheroes known as “TimeBandits”.

In addition to Frankie “The TIMEBANDIT”, we are currently in production on the TIMEBANDITS Comic (release, Fall of 2011). Pre-production has also started on a range of TIMEBANDITS Toys based on the characters from our comic book.

REVIEW

Stats:
Artist: Jonathan Stephens
Sculpted by: David Arshawsky
Height: 9” tall
Accessories: Fedora hat & briefcase

Packaging:
Frankie comes packaged in a window-front box that features background information on the character. The back face of the box, features a large illustration of Frankie. Frankie is neatly packed in form fitting plastic and is easily viewable from within.

Vinyl:
Quite an awesome sculpt, with alot of detail and an interesting pose. Frankie is a great character; created from the TimeBandits logo, and modelled on a 1930′s mobster. He bears

Downsides:
The only downside to this piece is that the paint could’ve been just that little bit sharper. There are areas which are great and have fine detail such as the face but then other others are a little fuzzy or uneven. It’s a shame that there are paint faults as other than that the figure is great.

Definitely worth adding to your collection if you’re a fan of mobster characters or are familiar with the TimeBandits brand. Especially worth picking up if you’re into TimeBandits watches as there’s currently a deal which allows you to pickup a watch and Frankie “The TimeBandit” for $54.95 (approx £35).

You can get yours at TimeBandits Watches
