There are many specialised subjects in the broad discipline of physics at the master's degree level. Among them are nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, space physics, solid-state physics, electronics and theoretical physics. B.Sc degree holders in physics with high marks can go for M.Sc. with any one of these specialisations.

To become a nuclear physicist, one should specialise in nuclear physics at the M.Sc. and Ph.D. level. Those specialise in atomic physics at the postgraduate and Ph.D. level can become an atomic physicist or scientist. Meritorious physics graduates are eligible for admission. Aspirants must have the right scientific aptitude and capability. This course is very rare at the university level.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) situated in Trombay, Mumbai is India's primary nuclear research facility. It has a number of nuclear reactors, all of which are used for India's nuclear power and research program.

It was started in 1957, as the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET), and became India's primary nuclear research center, taking over charge of most nuclear scientists that were at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. After Homi J. Bhabha's death in 1966, the centre was renamed as the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

The first reactors at BARC and its affiliated power generation centers were imported from the west. India's first power reactors, installed at the Tarapore Atomic Power Plant (TAPP) were from the US.

The primary import of BARC is as a research centre. The BARC and the Indian government has consistently maintained that the reactors are used for this purpose only: Apsara (1956; named by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru when he likened the blue Cerenkov radiation to the beauty of the Apsaras (Indra's court dancers), CIRUS (1960; the "Canada-India Reactor" with assistance from Canada), the now-defunct ZERLINA (1961; Zero Energy Reactor for Lattice Investigations and Neutron Assay), Purnima I (1972), Purnima II (1984), Dhruva(1985), Purnima III (1990), and Kamini.

The plutonium used in India's 1974 nuclear test carried out in Pokhran in the Thar desert of Rajasthan, sometimes referred to in the liberal media as a 'Peaceful Nuclear Explosion', came from CIRUS, the primary charter of which was 'peaceful' nuclear research.

The 1974 test (and the 1998 tests that followed) gave Indian scientists the technological know-how and confidence not only to develop nuclear fuel for future reactors to be used in power generation and research, but also the capacity to refine the same fuel into weapons-grade fuel to be used in the development of nuclear weapons

The Narmada Dam Project, is a project involving the construction of a series of large hydroelectric dams on the Narmada River in India. Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) is the largest multipurpose project involved in the construction. The multi-purpose project will irrigate more than 18,000 square kilometres - most of it in drought prone areas like - Kutch and Saurashtra.

Please post articles and pictures of the dam its canal network and areas brought under its cultivation.

Amongst the 30 large dams planned for the Narmada, the Sardar Sarovar dam is the largest. With a proposed height of 136.5 m (455 feet), it is the focal point of both the dam-builders plans and the Narmada Bachao Andolan's opposition. The Govt claims that the multi-purpose Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) would irrigate more than 1.8 million hectares (mostly in Gujarat, some in Rajasthan) and quench the thirst of the drought prone areas of Kutch and Saurashtra in Gujarat. The opponents of the dam counter that these benefits are grossly exaggerated and would never accrue to the extent suggested by the Govt. Instead the project would displace more than 320,000 people and affect the livelihood of thousands of others. Overall, due to related displacements by the canal system and other allied projects, at least 1 million people are expected to be affected if the project is completed.
Indian army arrested Sakib Moinullah Shah a suspected Pakistani rebel in Indian-controlled Kashmir and revovered large arms and ammunition from him, a top army officer said. Some 31 Islamic militants infiltrated into Indian Kashmir from the Pakistani zone of the disputed region over the past few weeks, a captured Islamic militant said. The revelations came as Indian Kashmir is preparing for the next round of general elections. Voting in Kashmir has been split into five stages for security reasons. The first two rounds passed off peacefully but next week polling moves to the region's more sensitive Muslim-majority areas. The Akshardham temple complex has been built on the banks of the serene River Yamuna and lies over a sprawling 100 acres of lush manicured lawns adorned with water fountains and carved pavilions. A whopping 2 billion was spent on the construction of this grand place of worship that took about 2 years to build. The magnificent Akshardham Temple in Delhi has been constructed under the patronage of the Bochasanvasi Aksharpurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) and was inaugurated on November 7, 2005.An IMAX theatre, a Swaminarayan temple and an elaborate musical fountain accessorize the massive Akshardham temple complex in Delhi, India. The architectural style is an imitation of the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India.

The Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar Gujarat is one of the popular pilgrimage sites in India. The Temple attracts nearly 2 million visitors each year. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan. The temple is famous for its unusual and massive architecture. The Akshardham temple is the largest temple in Gujarat in terms of the complex. The surroundings are peaceful and clean. About 6000 metric tons of long durable pink sandstone was imported from Rajasthan and has been engraved by the skilled artisans of Bansipahadpur. It stands tall with a height of 108 feet. The shrine is located in the multi-acre patch, called Sahajanand van, with convoluted figurine of Hindu Gods, magnificently landscaped patch of land, eatery and amusements. Located in the exclusive residential area of LutyensÂ’ Delhi, close to the seat of government, The Taj Mahal Hotel reflects the heritage of Mughal Delhi. Graceful architecture blends aesthetically with modern facilities. The hotel is a city landmark, centrally located, in close proximity to key areas.

The Taj Mahal Hotel is a 40-minute drive from the international airport and minutes away from the bustling city center, Connaught Place, Pragati Maidan, Government offices and Diplomatic missions . The warm, pristine white lobby of The Taj woven with designs reminiscent of Mughal architecture, intricate motifs, golden inlay work, nicheÂ’s from ‘ShahjahanabadÂ’, the erstwhile mogul capital, all add a sense of timelessness to the interiors. The intricacy of the art and design work of the domes and panels in the lobby are perfectly complimented with the calm marble fountain streams. The Taj Mahal Hotel is a veritable showcase of artifacts and art of the era. The hotel’s most recent introduction has been the Grande Presidential Suite. Every detail in this suite has been perfected to host Heads of State and global business leaders.

Mumbai (formerly know as Bombay) is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. As it is popularly know as “Jadu Ki Nagri” (meaning “the land of Magic”), Mumbai is a magical collection of seven islands on the Konkan coastline, which over time were joined to form the island city of Bombay. The city has an estimated metropolitan population of 17 million (2005), making it one of the largest cities in the world.

Mumbai is spread over an area of about 437 sq. kms that means….? Yes! You guessed it right. There are people, people and more people where ever you turn. Nevertheless you can find a good transport infrastructure in Mumbai.

You can travel around the city on taxis which are prompt and their charges are pretty nominal as well. But the taxis operate only in certain parts of the city, autorickshaws ply in the areas where taxis are not allowed to. The autorickshaws drivers are very polite and the charges are reasonable also.

Surat Diamond

Surat: The diamond industry in Surat has bounced back but traders face a peculiar problem. They are now short staffed because of all the workers they laid off a few months ago.

The election was marked by blame game over the downturn in Surat's diamond industry. But the reality now is quite different. Diamond trader Prakash Badmecha is faced with a peculiar problem. Ten months ago, he was forced to lay off workers, due to dropping demand, but now orders are pouring in, and Prakash is finding it difficult to find workers.

"This crisis is different. There is a lot of work, but shortage of workers. We are willing to pay more to hire them," said the diamond industrialist.

Surat's diamond polishing units wore a deserted look just a few months back. Now, at least 30 per cent of them have started functioning again. But a sizable chunk of the four lakh workers who were laid off earlier, have not returned, as they have found jobs elsewhere.

Surat is known for its spice, silk and diamond trade. It is the leading diamond polishing industry of India. Diamond cutting has a history of over 100 years now and after a 100 years, it was confirmed that a whopping 92% of world’s diamonds were cut in Surat and that gave India a lot of revenue. Now the Surat diamond cutters are eyeing the bigger diamonds and are expanding from small pieces. Though Surat had to go through a lot of natural disasters in past few years, like floods each year, earthquakes and even Plague, but there is a go-get-it attitude in Surat people to keep on moving ahead in life- that’s what is probably keeping it as an economic powerhouse of India. Even the international bodies like UN are aware of the growth rate of Surat, at an alarming 400% and UN has termed it as the “Fastest Growing City of the World”.

Surat Diamond Workers
    By shoppingsurat

One very important question arises in the mind, what is secret behind sparkle of Surat Diamond Business. It is none other than Surat’s Highly skilled Work force. And most important Surat Diamond work force is cheaper than other places. Though most of the workers hails from North Gujarat called ‘Saurashtra’ but workers are also from Bihar, Up and Orrisa which has made their contribution in this field. If you enter katargam and Varachha , which are center point of Surat Diamond, at peak time you will see nothing but heads there. Most of the workers get about Rs. 6000-10000 as salary but there are many others also who get good pay.

Surat, they city of Diamond and Textile is supposed to be derived its name from Suryapur or Khubsoorat. The city Surat which is also administrative headquarters of the district Surat, Gujarat is the Eighth largest city in India and second largest city in Gujarat after Ahmedabad. The idol which was worshipped by hundreds of people for 7 odd days was being brutally destroyed by works who wanted to gain some scrap value out of it and clean the mess.

At first, what came to my mind was why can’t we reuse this component (Ganesha idol)? (IT influence you see!) I.e. why are we creating this idol every year, dispose them off few days later and re create from scratch again next year? After the festival why cant we preserve the idol and use it again next year? Will the annual maintenance expense (of preserving this idol for one year) be more expensive than new idol? I’m not sure.

But on second thought, I realized that such a practice (of reusing the idol) would defeat the very purpose of having festivals. One of the main reasons why our ancestors designed the concept of festivals under various pretext is that money should circulate within the society.

reliance mobiles

HTC P3000 and HTC S720

Today, at a press event held in Mumbai, HTC and Reliance Communications announced their newly formed partnership and rolled out the two new HTC mobile phones which will be exclusively available via Reliance.

The two phones that have been launched are HTC P3000 and HTC S720, both of the handsets promise high data speeds, strong email and voice capability. Besides being famous for the intellect and spiritual mindset of people from that bygone era, Khajuraho is also where the saga of Indian love calls as its home and it is here that the Kama Sutra also lives.

Golden Temple, Amritsar

The Golden Temple
Order Fine Art Print

I am often asked what my favorite sacred places are in the world, among the many hundreds I have visited. I could not choose one in particular, but included in the top ten would certainly be the Golden Temple. It is a place of both stupendous beauty and sublime peacefulness. Originally a small lake in the midst of a quiet forest, the site has been a meditation retreat for wandering mendicants and sages since deep antiquity. The Buddha is known to have spent time at this place in contemplation. Two thousand years after Buddha's time, another philosopher-saint came to live and meditate by the peaceful lake. This was Guru Nanak (1469-1539), the founder of the Sikh religion. After the passing away of Guru Nanak, his disciples continued to frequent the site; over the centuries it became the primary sacred shrine of the Sikhs. The lake was enlarged and structurally contained during the leadership of the fourth Sikh Guru (Ram Dass, 1574-1581), and during the leadership of the fifth Guru (Arjan, 1581-1606), the Hari Mandir, or Temple of God was built. From the early 1600s to the mid 1700s the sixth through tenth Sikh Gurus were constantly involved in defending both their religion and their temple against Moslem armies. On numerous occasions the temple was destroyed by the Moslems, and each time was rebuilt more beautifully by the Sikhs. From 1767 onwards, the Sikhs became strong enough militarily to repulse invaders. Peace returned to the Hari Mandir.

Once again, Shilpa Shetty is in the news for getting a kiss on her rosy cheeks. This time it is not Richard Gere but a temple’s priest. Actually recently she visited Sakhigopal temple and the priest of the temple became so happy with Shilpa’s visit that while blessing her, he gave a kiss on her cheeks. Some local people are also claiming that Shilpa has entered the temple with her shoes in. Two years back, Richard Gere had an impromptu hug and kiss with her during an event to promote safe sex and arise AIDS awareness program in India. After this Kissing event, a large number of protesters burned effigies of Gere on the streets of Kanpur, Meerut and Varanasi while shouting “down with Gere”.

See the Video of Richard Gere Kissing Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Getting Kiss from a Priest

would u like pizza of kareena:

Hot and sexy Kareena Kapoor is more known for her size-zero figure than anything else. Our Indian girls have already idolized Bebo (nickname of Kareena) and are aspiring for Kareena type figure but it seems that corporate world is also mesmerized, as an International pizza chain has recently minted its new pizza as size zero pizza inspired by none other than our ravishing Bebo. This cheesy pizza will have a delicious thin crust but will not contain high calories thats why it is named as size zero pizza. Although she doesn’t have that size-zero figure anymore due to the requirement of her curves for her new film but she is more than happy to hear this news and said “I’m flattered that a pizza has been named after me.” She was out of country when this announcement was made and got to know this only by her sister Karishma Kapoor.

She herself follows a stern regime of dieting instructed by her dietician, she still doesn’t miss any chance to savor pizza whenever she has time and some spare calories. She once even argued that “it’s a misconception that cheese is unhealthy.” According to the sources Bebo has been a pizza fan for a long time. She was even on cheese diet for some time. It was revealed that once her mother had to fly to her shoot of film carrying pizza as she wasn’t getting them locally. So friends don’t forget to try this new size zero Kareena Pizza.

Sania Mirza with dashing Mohammad Sohrab Mirza

The long awaited and much discussed ceremony of the season, engagement of nation’s heart-throb tennis star Sania Mirza with dashing Mohammad Sohrab Mirza was held with a blend of elegance and Hyderabadi warmth at a five-star hotel here on Friday night. It is a big deal for both the nations. After this deal, India has achieved an unique status as the only nuclear weapons power to be allowed global nuclear commerce without signing NPT or CTBT. It is certainly a great achievement for Manmohan Singh’s UPA Government. This deal has once again proved the importance of India as an emerging power with a stable democratic system on international front. It’s an unprecedented deal for India. I know you want to know more about the deal. Let’s point out highlights of this historical deal.

As already mentioned, India has achieved unique status. It has ended 34 years of nuclear isolation for India after Pokhran tests of 1974. Moreover, India has achieved this without signing NPT or CTBT.

Now India can carry out nuclear trade, gets options for nuclear power and access to sensitive hi-tech that will boost up Indian industries like IT, space, power, defense and manufacturing.

India has come closer to developed nations like US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, Japan, Australia.

India would be eligible to buy U.S. dual-use nuclear technology, including materials and equipment that could be used to enrich uranium or reprocess plutonium, potentially creating the material for nuclear bombs. It would also receive imported fuel for its nuclear reactors.

The deal does not require India to cap or limit its fissile material production.

With the help of this deal, India can improve its productivity at nuclear plants as now fuel flows will be better. India can now meet its nuclear energy target by 2020.
