Let me tell you a short story about how I came to find my own answer to that same question and how I think it may be the answer for you as well…

I have been marketing for several years online and had not made any real money myself until about a year ago.

I was like many of you that come online all full of piss and vinegar and the first thing you do is, jump into some company that you have seen advertising that is just hotter than yesterdays chili.

You are told all the old school things that people are told even today, in these companies. I’m sure you have heard them all before just like me. Contact your friends and family. Talk to people in your grocery store line or within you 3 foot radius using the 3 foot rule. Or, how about purchase leads from here and start calling them using this proven script…

You know the funny thing is that they are still teaching the same things today…

Sure, it is working for the people that have been in the company for years and have built there businesses that way, as far back as before the Internet, etc.

These people are the lucky ones that have that certain personality that only a few have and were born with. The biggest problem is, that personality is not something that can be duplicated.

Yes, I tried to learn it for a long time… Sure I sponsored people here and there and would make a little money, but the same time every month my autoship would come due and my monthly maintenance fee would come due. and there I would be again… Yep, I would either be breaking even or seeing a loss for the month…

Not because I was not trying, but because I just did not have that personality that I was trying to learn. Oh, and then there is the person that signs up, and you are all ecstatic because you are earning a commission or your share above your cost for the product…

In my case, I always purchased products for inventory so I would not have to wait for the company to ship to my new customer. Yep, that was the way to go. Buy at a bigger discount and when the customer purchases directly from you, you make the instant money. That was great until my customers started quitting and shipping there products back to me, and the company policy was to refund immediately…

So then you would have to scrape up the money that usually had already been spent and send the refund. What happened to the product you had shipped to the customer? Well yeah, you got it back, but now you cannot sell it as a new product anymore, even though it is…

Are you starting to follow what happens to most people and why it is so hard to make a lot of money that way.

Then there is always the rare case like mine that sells out to another company while you are sleeping and you wake up to new owners the next day that will not honor the warranties on the old products. In my case I got stuck with over $10,000 in products from inventory…

Why am I telling you what you probably already know?

It’s because I wanted to make a point before I told you about the answer to the question, “Why are you not making any real money?”, that I found…

I quit trying to make money with the company and the physical product thing. I learned that the ‘real money’ wos in information products. They can either be products that you create yourself and earn 100% of the profits or it could be other peoples products, where you are an affiliate and you can earn up to probably 50% for selling other peoples products.

Most of the time it is less than 50% by the time you factor in your marketing costs, etc. This is called affiliate marketing and is a very good way to make money, but you are generally still not making the ‘Real Money!’

So, what is the answer to the ‘Real Money’ question?

I found a guy by the name of Matt Lloyd that had a totally new perspective on affiliate marketing and a wild desire to help us earn and learn as well. I have been absent from my daily routine online for the last couple of days because I have been doing a bathroom remodel for a friend of the family. I used to buy and sell houses or what people call flipping houses.

When the bottom dropped out of the housing market a few years back I had to stop doing that. Every once in awhile I like to do a little remodeling for people kind of as a hobby now. I forgot to get the before picture and the picture of the final job in this set of pictures, but I do have them and will add them as soon as I get them uploaded.

Day One: The first day we did the tear out of the original steel tub and moldy tile that surrounded the walls of the tub enclosure. As you can see from the pictures we stripped everything down to the bare s. From there we made sure all of the nails and anything that may hinder the installation of the new acrylic 3 piece fiberglass unit from the studs and surrounding area.

We pulled the existing toilet to allow room to assemble the new 3 piece acrylic unit once we got it inside of the bathroom. The reason for using a 3 piece or what is called a breakdown unit is because when doing a remodel of this kind, all of your existing walls and doors are already in place, so you would not be able to get a one-piece unit into the house, let alone into a bathroom.

So, now we have everything ready to  ready to install the new unit.

Have you ever experience the feeling of one of the old non-pressure balanced valves when someone turns on the water somewhere else in the house when you are taking a shower?

Oh, I forgot to mention that we cut out the old three handle existing valve that every time someone would turn on a faucet somewhere else in the house, while a person was taking a shower, that person would get a blast of hot or cold water. Ouch!

So, we will be installing a new pressure balance valve so this will not happen anymore. This will make the showering experience much more pleasurable don’t you think?

We now have the tub base in the bathroom and we are installing the left hand side of the tubs walls. We put a thin bead of silicone in the seam where it is attached to the the tub and screw the two pieces together. That is one of the great things about the Fiber Fab tub assembly that we are using is that it is actually bolted together versus using other types of surrounds where the walls are simply put together using silicone.

Now we do the same with the right hand wall of the unit and are now ready to install the unit and attach it to the bare studs. As you can imagine, now we have very limited space in which to work and we do not want to break any of the flanges or the base of the tub, so we have to be very careful sliding the unit into the space we have available.

Keep in mind that our space is only 60″ wide and our new unit it 59 3/4″ wide so we do not have a lot of wiggle room to get the unit into this space. We gently work the unit into the space and get it set into position and it fits perfectly. Oh, I forgot to mention that the new unit is 1 1/2″ deeper from the back wall out to the front of the tub so we had dry fitted the tub prior to installing the walls and marked the floor so we new where the new tub was going to fit.

We then removed the tub and cut the floor where we had place our mark, using a skill saw and finishing cutting then ends with a sawsall, being very careful to keep the edge of the floor exactly where our mark was. So, now we have the floor cut and with any kind of luck our new tub will drop right in. The new unit will set right down onto the floors decking which is about 1/2″ below the sub floor, that is why we had to cut the floor.

Okay, we have carefully slid the unit into the space and it has dropped onto the decking and fits perfectly up against our new cut in the floor. At the very finish we will put a bead of silicone there to seal the floor from any drips or spills. The next step is to screw the new unit to the existing studs and since the quality of the unit is of a thickness that causes it to stick out from the surface of the studs. We place some 1/4″ shim strips on the existing studs above the unit so the sheet rock will fit flush and tight when installed.

That is the next step. Installing sheetrock designed specifically for use in bathrooms and area where moisture may be. Then plaster goes over the sheetrock, then a finish bead of silicone around all edges of the unit and sheetrock. Also the floor in front of the tub.

The holes are cut into the tub wall for the new valve and tub spout. The new valve is installed into the wall and in this instance, we had access to the backside of the wall making the installation of the tub and the valve much easier. Normally this is not possible, so when the unit is being installed, it is necessary to squeeze the unit past the front of the the valve that is sticking out of the wall and cut the holes prior to installation.

Day Two: The walls surrounding the new installation have been textured to give the bathroom a new look and the walls have been painted. And this job is now completed.

The first day we did the tear out, install the new unit, install the sheetrock, install the rough-in valve, and tape and plaster the walls. The second day we finish plastering and applying the texture to the surrounding walls, applying the silicone to seal all edges, and install the new trim. At this point my job is done.

Now it is up to the homeowner to apply whatever color paint they decide to use. Once they have done that I will get you a finished picture of this new two day project…

I hope this has given you a basic understanding of what is necessary to remodel just the bath area of a bathroom. We have not done anything with the toilet fixture or the sink area yet. I would be willing to bet that after seeing the finished bathing area they will be wanting the rest of the bathroom to look as good.

What is a solo ad?

A solo ad is a short text ad that you would send to someone else’s email list.

For example: You would find a solo ad vendor that has an email list of maybe 10,000 subscribers, and you would contract with that solo ad vendor to send out your text ad to their list. I just purchased a 250 click solo ad from a vendor for $80.00.

What does that mean?

The vendor will send my solo ad to their list or a segment of their list to get me 250 unique clicks. Unique clicks are clicks that come from each person opting in only once. They may click on my ad more than once, but I have purchased unique clicks so, the extra clicks are not counted a second time.

In this solo ad that has just finished running I actually got 315 total clicks and 294 unique clicks. Most vendors will send you more unique clicks than you order, and that is one way to insure they get your repeat business.

Are solo ads worth it?

On the surface you may be saying, “that does not look like a very good deal to me.” If you look at the ad I am showing you here, you may think at first glance that it is not worth the price I paid for this ad. Let me explain…

I purchased this ad for $80.00, for a 250 click solo and I received a total of 315 clicks, 294 unique clicks, and 131 optins or subscribers to my email list . From this solo ad I made two sales for $9.95 each for a total sale of $19.90, so far. Now these are upfront immediate sales and there could be more coming in as the subscribers are getting my follow up emails dripping on them…

This may not look very good on the surface and you may say, “you spent $80.00 to get less than $20.00 worth of sales?” I would say, “no I spent $80.00 to get 131 new people on my list and in the process, I made two sales worth $19.90.” Now those sales are for a product that leads to a $2000.00 product and if either one of those two people buy that product, would you then think it was worth it? Or maybe one or two of those 131 optins to my solo ad were to by that product, would it then be worth it?

Do you see what the potential of this one solo ad is now?

The real purpose of solo ads are not necessarily to make money, but to build your email marketing list. Yes, don’t get me wrong, you are also looking for sales, but that is not your main objective of solo ads. Now, I have 131 new people that I can market to until the end of time or until they decide to unsubscribe from my list. As I get to know my list, I will be able to market any number of products to them over time and I will almost guarantee, they will generate more than $80.00…

It only took me 5 days to add 131 subscribers to my list…

Now it only took me 5 days to get those new subscribers onto my list and normally a good solo ad will process in 48-72 hours of starting or less. This particular solo ad ran a little slow, but the results in my opinion were really quite good. That is a 44.03% optin rate to this particular vendors list. There will still be more subscribers that will trickle in even after the ad stops running because there are solo ads sitting in someones email inbox that has not been opened yet.

Let me ask you this?

How long would it take you to get 131 optins to your list from using other methods of marketing like, blogging, article writing, forum marketing, or any number of other methods of marketing online?

Even if you could get even close to that many optins from those methods, do you think that all of those optins would purchase right up front either?

You tell me, which way would you rather build your list. I have used many different methods in the past including PPC and I will tell you that doing a solo ad will build my list for a lot less money than the PPC ever did. To me doing a solo ad is the best and fastest way to build your email autoresponder list and generate future money for a long time…

When you are doing a solo ad, you want to make sure your capture page and your solo ad are congruent with each other. Make sure they are relevant to the destination you are sending people to as well. I use the same first sentence or paragraph on my solo ad as I do on my capture page…

I apologize for the language, but I just could not resist. It is such a stupid thing for YouTube to do in my opinion, but then what would one expect… It is after all owned by Google…! What, you didn’t know that?

So, what should we be doing about it?

The first thing you should be doing is creating back ups of all of your YouTube videos if you have not done so already.

Don’t stand around, if it was me I would be doing it right now!

Oh wait a minute, I just finished doing that.

Here is an easy way to do that. I have a friend and colleague online by the name of Kelvin Myles that has already created a blog post including resources and video to walk you through doing that so rather than putting all of that information here as if it were my own, I will send you over to his blog. I kind of cracked up watching it, so if there are any of you out there holding back from creating your own videos, take a look at this one, have a good laugh and then go do your own. I love it.

I thought it was rather humorous myself. This video was actually 4 attempts all molded together using Windows Movie Maker. I had never used WMM or made a video prior to this attempt. It was so easy…

I have made a few videos since then. Video is probably the most powerful and free marketing medium on the Internet.

Since I am an Online Marketing Coach and Trainer, I use video to create tutorials and educational videos for my students. By doing this it frees up a lot of my time.

Most problems that people have online are the same problems that everyone has, so when you provide a solution using a video, you can just send them the video next time the question comes up.

As I was saving my YouTube videos I ran across one of my old training videos that kind of surprised me, because it has had 52,920 views. That is remarkable and also shows you the power of video.

Well it is now the day after posting this and my account has been terminated. Luckily for me I had copied all of my videos yesterday and I have now re-installed them into this post using a new tool on the market called Easy Video Suite which just launched a couple weeks ago and I purchased a copy. It literally only took a few minutes to change these videos from YT to EVS embed codes…

That is a question you should be asking yourself because if you don’t know or if you are not doing anything other than promoting your company or company products, then you are leaving thousands of dollars on the proverbial table…

You may be saying, “what should I be doing other than promoting my company?”

Promoting your company is good, don’t get me wrong but are you making any money before you get someone to sign up for your company and then how long does it take for them to start producing before you start earning from their efforts?

If I remember right, back when I was doing the same thing, it could take a long time and sometimes never…

Well, here is what I suggest!

Affiliate marketing is a very lucrative way to create income to support you and your business efforts. There are a couple of different ways of doing affiliate marketing.

You can create an account with Clickbank and promote other people products using your own capture page and then sending people to the marketers websites…

You can find a leader that already has some awesome products on the market and has made a name for themselves that is respected for having quality products. Because you don’t want to promote things that are not of good quality or you won’t be earning an income for very long…

Usually these leaders will have an affiliate program that you can sign up for that is free to participate in. You will earn a specified commission for specific products. You will be given your own personal affiliate link and in most cases some marketing tools consisting of banners, email swipe copy, etc. It is then up to you to go out and promote, do your follow up, and make the sale…

But did you know that there is a much more lucrative way to be an affiliate marketer:

• You can earn much higher commissions as high as 90% of the sale of the product
• You have in most cases many more products to market for higher commissions
• You have many more tools and more training on the best ways to market these products
• There is a phone team in place to follow up FOR YOU to make sales FOR YOU on the back end

What? You didn’t know there was anything out there that would do most of the heavy work for you and all you had to do was drive traffic to an offer…?

Yep, I know of at least two that I am affiliated with personally.

Each one is great for different reasons:

Option #1

The first one I would like to explain to you is called Webroom Seminar. Well now, I will explain how you can do that in a little bit, but right now, let me explain what the difference is between a standard affiliate marketer and a licensed affiliate marketer…

As a Standard everyday affiliate marketer you are, in most cases, able to sign up as an affiliate and market a person or companies products for free…and earn a nominal commission. For example 30-50% commission rate of the sale price of the item would be normal… Sale price of $194 x 50% = $97 affiliate commission…

There are a couple scenarios for being a licensed affiliate marketer:

1. For a specified price you could become a licensed affiliate to sell a person or companies products… There are some situations where you cannot be a free standard affiliate marketer. There is only the licensed method available…
2. For a specified price you could become a licensed affiliate marketer to not only sell the core products, but all of the products, and earn a higher commission than the Standard affiliate marketer… $194 x 90% = $174.60 affiliate commission.

“How do I know what to write in my emails?”

I used to struggle with this one myself.  I’d sit in front of my computer, staring at the white screen, with that cursor flashing, just waiting for me to write my email.

And it could take up to 2 hours just to write an email and send it out!

Now… when I write an email, I can crank it out in under 20 minutes flat, and then watch the commissions start rolling in, just a few hours later.

How do I do it? 

Well, I can’t explain the entire process of writing my email in this post, but I’ll give you one tip:

Use the stories of your everyday life.

People love to read stories.  And I know you have plenty of stories to tell.

Now you might think that your stories are not particularly interesting… or that the people on your list don’t really care.

But that’s wrong.

Because more often than not, it’s about the way you tell your stories, whether they’re entertaining, and your personality comes through in your email writing.

This is a skill that comes with practice, but trust me, once you get into the habit of emailing your list on a regular basis, it becomes quite easy.

Now of course, you want to tie your stories back to whatever offer you’re promoting.

At the end of the day, you are trying to make an income from this…

And again, this is a skill that you’ll learn through practicing.

So everything is a story and and our stories are only what we make them mean. Does that make sense? If we have stories of things from our past that are holding us back from doing the things we should be doing, they are only stories…they are not reality…

Here is something from my past that is only a story, not reality, and has been holding me back…

Ever since I was in high school, at least this is when I noticed it the most, I would always have problems when I had to get up in front of class to give a speech, report, review, or something that someone else told me that I had to do… I did not have those issues if I was in the middle of a crowd of people and it was my decision to just speak… Why do you suppose that is?

I would get all tensed up, sweaty hands, my chest would feel like a ten ton elephant was sitting on it, and no matter how well I had rehearsed my material, this is the way I would feel… I have found out that what I was feeling is part of some story that I had created from somewhere in my past.

By distinguishing what it was that was causing my story and realizing that it is not reality, I was able to let go of the cause, just by understanding that it was only a story that I had made up in my mind, and this is what was causing those feelings and pressures. By allowing myself to see the reality instead of the story and release whatever it was that I had allowed myself to believe, I am now able to move forward without that story holding me back…

How do you clear the constraints of the past to be able to freely create the future you will love?

• You must first be able to distinguish reality from your stories…
• You must consciously choose which stories you are going to tell yourself about reality that will help you live the life you truly want to live.
• By doing this you will become the person that you really want to be, not the one that is determined by your subconscious stories that are in the background running your life.

There are a lot of people that fall into the trap of their own selective perceptions. They have taken the perception or view of reality, as if it were actual reality. This one simple mistake costs us our power in life. We are not unstoppable…

The process goes something like this:

• When you have an experience, your mind processes it through filters. It then becomes you view of it. Your view can never be reality or what actually happened because it will always be just your view…
• Your view is only what you tell yourself, or your story. This story that you tell yourself is only inside your head. The act of perceiving is one of our most powerful tools in the universe, and many people just give it away.
• Most people believe their view of reality is reality.
• Your view of reality “cannot be reality”. It’s the law of physics.

For example: Bring me someone who rejected you. In physical reality you can’t because rejection only exists inside your head as language. Where in reality, someone only said “NO.”

No one controls our perceptions except us. Power comes from our perceptions. We can learn how to perceive life in a way that will bring us fulfillment, happiness, peace, satisfaction, and success.

To sum it up, I will tell you that we all are full of our own stories. Stories that we have created over our lifetimes to hide the things that are now holding us back. Some of us will have more stories than others. Some of us may only have one story, but until we decide to analyze ourselves to find out what our stories are…

We will be stuck inside those stories until we find out what reality really is. If we are stuck in some way, then it is our lack of perceived reality and only a story that has us blocked. Get to bottom of your story so you can see the reality and you will be able to move forward once again towards becoming unstoppable.

I am looking into myself to find my stories that are holding me back, like the one I mentioned above. If we are not achieving the success we want or seem to be stuck and not moving forward, I would be willing to bet, if you sat down and really concentrated on what you perceive as reality, you will find that it is only a story, and stories are not reality.

Remove those stories from your subconscious and you will finally be free to move forward in the true reality of the unstoppable entrepreneur that you are…

If you read my first two posts “You Want A Piece Of Me! Part 1” and “You Want A Piece Of Me! Part 2” then you know how my life started and what happened to get me to this, the third part of my journey…?

You want a piece of me, part three starts out where I had just finished my retraining in the field of electronics… and had landed a non-training related position in a plumbing business computerizing their office…

Now, as you may realize this is totally different from the job experiences I had in the past, which were outside, during all kinds of weather conditions, long hours, and just plainly hard labor type jobs…

The one thing that was refreshing was that since it was in a plumbing shop, it was still construction related, so I did have some experience in that area, so the terminology etc. was familiar…

Well that job was going great. I had started out at a small beginning wage and had graduated to a fair wage in a very short period of time… Probably more than I would have made in the electronics field anyway… The wages were good, I had good insurance, even had some other good benefits like, vacation pay, retirement plan, etc.

So, I got started with this job in August of 1989 and everything was going great! I had gotten comfortable in my job and income…

Then, along comes 1999 and the beginning of the decline in the economy. Yep just like everyone else, I was affected the same. The first thing that happened was, my income was reduced… You probably know how that will affect the cost of your home that you have gotten comfortable in? The amount of toys you have gotten accustomed to playing with, etc. So you start downsizing to compensate…

Then the retirement plan went away…

That is about the time I decided that I had better find something to supplement my retirement because it did not look like my job was going to do it anymore, unless something in the economy really changed a lot. That is around the time that I started looking online for some kind of options that would not take a lot of money or time…

I found a company online that was in the healthy green technologies industry and I thought this is a great field to get into. People need clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, healthy juices and vitamins, etc. The country is going green. This is where I should be…!

I did what most all of you reading my story have probably done, since that is the way we have all been told it should be done…?

Go out and talk to your friends and family, hit the guy up next to you in the grocery store line, because he can’t get away from you… Purchase and cold call leads all hours of the day, just to get as many no’s as you could get, so you could get that yes… Then what happens is you get someone into your business for 30, 60, 90 days and then they quit.

In my case, I have bought the big kit that I was told will save me a lot of money and create more profit for me as well… At that time I was still working, had good credit, lots of credit cards to give me easy access to purchasing the products/kits…

After about two years with this company I had built up a good sized inventory in my garage and a team of probably 10 people. I had a filing cabinet full of folders that said I had done really well with probably 50 or so people that had been in my business over time and had quit.

During this time I had started spending more time online trying to figure out how to market my company and my products. Company policy would not let me market the company name and that sort of thing everyone probably understands…

I ran into a product called Magnetic Sponsoring by Mike Dillard and bought it. I was now on Mike’s email list and started getting information in my email. It was about this time that I got up one morning as usual and went to my computer to check things out…

What did I find jumping off of my computer screen and just about knocking me to the floor? There was an email with the subject line, “XYZ company has been sold…” What, I have over $10,000 of inventory in my garage! As it turns out, the company had been close to bankruptcy, without the common knowledge of the reps in the company.

This is what happened. The new company kept the majority of the main line products, but changed the names on all of them. They discontinued several of the products and decided not to honor some of the warranties for products that had not been sold yet and stopped making some of the replacement parts for others…

This is when I realized that what I had been hearing about, people do not buy your products, they do not join your company, they join and buy from YOU because they know like and trust YOU!

By the way, I still have inventory if anyone might be interested… LOL

That is around the time that I connected with Jonathan Budd and his 7 Figure Networker System. I jumped into that system with both feet and have been earning commission checks from J Budd twice a month ever since just like clockwork.

That is when I decided I was going to try to learn everything I could about marketing online. I did it just the way all of you are probably doing it… Yep, I started buying products and courses about everything. I studied it all…well probably like you I studied the first chapter or two and then I would move onto something else.

Something that I may have done that you are not doing though is, I started taking action on the one thing that was working for me and that was the 7 Figure Networker System. Sure I was making a few dollars every month from my marketing efforts, but I was not going anywhere. I would check my email and there would be another one of those shiny objects telling me how easy it was to market online, how easy it was to get rich with this course or that…

I say “BULLSHIT!”

Pardon my swearing, but that is the truth. I am a very upfront person and I tell it like it is. Marketing online is not easy, it is hard work. And becoming successful at it, is even harder. But, it is not impossible if you go about it in the right way…

OOPS! I got carried away with that part of my story… So that was the next big thing that happened that totally took my life into a different direction. Now I am not saying that your company is going to be sold out from under you, but I will say that, you need to build your own brand and sell yourself first. Like I said before, most people come online without knowing at all what to do, how to do it, or where to go next once they do get here… Most people come online with a lot of energy and desire and see all over the Internet things like, “Get rich Quick,” Making Money is Easy,” etc. They jump into this and then that and before you know it they are either broke or so frustrated they are ready to quit, or both…

As with life having two ways to go, positive or negative, so does your path to online success. You can do it the normal way, which is the path that most take to frustration and debt, only because they don’t know any other way…

Or you can take the harder/easier more successful, more cost effective way, of finding a coach and a mentor that has already been down that first path and can save you from the frustration and debt if you are really serious about your success…

Myself, if I had it to do over again, I would definitely choose the last option. It was only after I got so far down financially that I was in bankruptcy, on the very edge of losing my home to foreclosure, that I finally made the decision to find a mentor and a coach. Trust me when I say it made all the difference in the world because now I am coaching and mentoring others and making a difference in their lives as well…

If you read my first post “You Want A Piece Of Me” then you know how my life started and what happened to get me to this, the second part of my journey…?

You want a piece of me, part two starts out at the hospital in Bend, Oregon where I had ended up after my approximately 16 foot fall, in freezing rain, onto the backs of my heels…and the hour long wait for some help…

I want to say thank you to the person from the mill next door that had jumped the fence to come over and get me some help when nobody from the mill I was at paid any mind to… By the way, I never got that person name so I could say thanks…

I was taken to the hospital and I do not even remember the ride getting there. Probably because I was so relieved to have gotten someones attention, or maybe it was because they filled my veins full of drugs, I do not know…

What I do know, is when I awoke in the hospital, I saw both of my legs propped up in front of me with casts on them both. It took me a short amount of time to realize what had happened… My first thought was about what had happened to my truck and the load that I had just loaded? I was assured that it had been taken care of and that I did not need to worry about it.

What I saw next made me wonder what my future held in store for me…

As I lay there in bed trying to find out what the verdict was on my condition was, since I had pretty much figured it out that I was not going to deliver that load of lumber… It was diagnosed that I had crushed both of my heels and what small pieces of bone that was still intact, was pinned together…as I could see from my observation of my casts.

One of my casts had pins sticking out of the back and side and the other one had a pin about the size of a standard sized Phillips screwdriver sticking out about an inch and half of the back of the other. cast…

It was determined that there was no reason to stay in the hospital, so I was presented with some options for how to get home which even included a helicopter ride. I opted for a ride home with a family member instead and not too far down the road, I realized at how dumb that idea was…

I did not realize how each little tiny bump was going to feel. Both of my feet were propped up on pillows, but because of the pins sticking out of the casts, could not get in a really comfortable position… Well you can probably guess how that trip went, 110-115 miles of mountain roads from Bend, Oregon to Eugene, Oregon… Yep, it was about as blissful as walking on 100 yards of red hot coals and no snow to put your feet in at the other end… LOL

Let’s move on to the next part of my journey.

At this point, I am assuming that my feet will heel up and life will return to normal… Not the case…

As my feet heal, the doctor puts me into physical therapy to try to increase the flexibility and range of motion in my ankles. Now I probably failed to mention that I had broken one of my ankles previously in high school…

Well, that particular ankle was very stubborn in coming back to moving like it was supposed to and the sensitivity in the bottom of my feet whenever I tried to walk barefoot was like, what I would guess it would feel like if you were walking on needles…

After about six months the doctor had all but determined that I may not walk again or if I did it would not be with any kind of normalcy… And for sure I could not go back to driving a truck again, due to the sensitivity to the bottom of my feet…

So, now I had to make another decision that would change the course of the rest of my life again? I was sent to a counselor to determine what I fit best into for being re-trained into a new line of work. I chose the electronics field as an electronic technician… This was a two year course and I found out that I would only have sixteen months to complete the course unless I chose to wait until the beginning of the next years classes.

That would mean, waiting seven or eight months before starting, so I decided to go for it. Pulling eighteen to twenty-one credits a term and pulling out a 4.0 GPA, I come up just short of my Associates degree… During that time I got my first introduction to a computer. I was using the computers in the school computer lab, but that meant I had to commute back and forth to use them so i decided to order a computer through the mail…

That was back in the days of MS-DOS operating systems. I don’t know how many of you might know what that was, but it was basically computer code that you could tell the computer what to do. My new computer came with these two binders of MS-DOS code and I started using my new computer to do my lessons.

I would create my word documents and all my lessons on that computer… I remember talking to another student at school about six months after I had started doing my lessons with my new computer. This other student asked me another question that would change the way I did my lessons…

He ask me, “What software I was using with my new computer?” Naturally I said, “I am using MS-DOS!”

He said, “You are using what? That is not software, that is computer code!” That is when my studies really got a lot easier when I found the ‘term’ software existed. I went down to the computer store and got my first piece of software called, MS Word for DOS and the rest is history… Well not exactly, but things sure went a lot easier for the next twelve months of class. Maybe you remember, that was back when all computers were using the 5 1/4″ floppy drives where you had to put in a disk to do this and another disk to save that, etc.

Well we have come close to the end of our training and like I said I was holding a 4.0 GPA, we were told to go out and find ourselves places to do actual on the job training, etc. It was then that I found out that what I had learned and done so well on in class was not what I needed, to perform outside of class… Now, that is a very frustrating feeling when you find out something like that…

Classes were ending and I was at a point in my life that I did not know what I was going to do? What I had spent sixteen months working on would not get me into a job… That was when a plumber friend of mine says, “My boss at the plumbing shop is looking for someone to come in and computerize his shop.” Computers, now that was something I knew something about, since I was weened on MS Dos…

I was hired for the task at a not so nice hourly wage at the time, but gradually worked its way up to a good income and steady. My new employer new nothing of computers, how they worked, or anything else electronically… He had some invoices and billing statements that he had been using to hand write his billing every month.

I took his existing invoices, statements, and letterhead and programmed the computer to print onto his existing forms. Now these were not forms that you would go to OfficeMax and purchase. These were forms that he had a printer make up custom for him without ever considering using them in a printer…?

So, when I showed him that he would not have to change his forms, that we would continue to use them… That is when I became a genius in his eyes and was considered his right hand man from that time on.

The moral of this part of my story is this:

Whatever life throws at you, you can choose to make it positive or negative.

Sure, I could have decided that the doctor was right, that I would never walk or at least not normally ever again, and just give up. Or I could have taken the other path that I chose for myself, and that was to fight and work hard to change the outcome that was laid out in front of me…
