It is not an easy journey; I will not kid you about that.

Coming to a new country and going to school has been difficult, but it is well worth it.

Study in Australia is Amazing

The best part besides getting the finest education on the planet is the scenery. The beautiful country that these Australians enjoy is not to be believed.

I have been here for two years and so far, everyone has been as nice as can be.

That makes it easier to adjust. If there were one thing that I would tell all the students who want to study in Australia, it would be about that working visa for which we all apply.

Here are a few of the rules I had to learn to work and study in Australia:

• Any visa issues after some time in 2008 is an automatic working visa so do not wonder if you can work. In fact, it also entitles any family member who came with you to work as well.

• You cannot work until your course officially starts.

• You are only allowed to work 40 hours per fortnight, which is what they call two weeks around here. If you hold it under twenty hours per week, you will be fine. (During school breaks, you get to work as much or as little as you want!)

Good News For Those Who Want to Study in Australia

Here is some good news because depending upon what courses you are taking, you may find yourself pulling some work duties for the institution.

That kind of work, plus any (real) volunteer work that you do does not count against your 40 hours.

Preliminary courses are limited to the 40 hour per fortnight rule but if you are in the subclass 574 postgraduate research going for your masters or doctorate, you get to work unlimited hours.

I know a couple of guys who are doing that and they work in the evenings.

You Need Family Support If You Want To Study in Australia

Finally, if your family does come out with you, and they should because it is a great place to live, they are restricted to the 40-hour/fortnight deal unless, as I said, you are in the subclass 573, 574, or 576 and going for the masters or doctorate.

If you Want to Study in Australia – Bring Your Bathing Suit

I believe that just about covers the rules when it comes to working. If you want my advice though, I would try to make sure you leave enough time for yourself. If you do not get out and enjoy the amazing beaches and all of these wonderful people, you might regret it.

You may want to study in Australia, but when you get here you have to have fun as well.

Not only will you be allowed to work, but any family members traveling with you on your Student Visa will be included in the work authorization.

There are some restrictions as to the hours and dates you will be allowed to work:

• You cannot work until you have begun your courses

Getting a Job as an International Student

You may find that obtaining a job while you study in Australia is a competitive undertaking. How quickly you get a job will depend on your skills and qualifications, what type of employment you are seeking, and how well you speak English.

As an international student the jobs you will find most available are in the hospitality and tourism industry. Jobs such as hotel housekeepers, dishwashers, kitchen help, handyman, wait staff, and janitorial staff abound for those available to work odd hours.

In addition you may find employment such as attendant, store clerk, or delivery person in retail shops. Because office hours are generally the same as school hours, students who may be qualified in for professional or office work often find themselves scrubbing floors, washing dishes, or waiting tables.

The Student Visa Shake-Down

 Recently the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) issued a warning to Australia’s International students to be on  watch for con artists who masquerade as officials bearing realistic notifications of a breach in the work conditions of their Student Visa.

These charlatans trick students into forfeiting large fines for these supposed violations into offshore bank accounts. At any given time in Australia there are over 300,000 active student visas, making this a widely-targeted scam.

International students attending school in Australia aren’t the only students who are being targeted, however. This ruse is being used to dupe students in countries around the world. Australian immigration officials advise any students who are contacted by someone asking for any type of payment for fines to contact the police and make a report to the DIAC.

The Lowdown on Jobs for International Students

Most students at college or university find it necessary to work at least part time to make ends meet. Because Australia’s economy is largely tourism-based there are many jobs available in the hospitality and tourism industry. These jobs may not fit in with your vision of your future self, but working as a dishwasher will certainly help keep food in the fridge.

Studying is more than just one simple task – in fact it’s multi-tasking.

1. Management Your Time for Study Abroad

Time management is the art of organizing your time so that you can accomplish things that are important. Make a checklist of the things you need to accomplish; be specific. For instance, rather than writing “study algebra,” try writing “study algebra chapter 21, questions 12-18.”

You will need to include all of the things that need to be done including shopping, appointments, laundry, dates – and don’t forget to leave time to sleep! Next, use a calendar or day planner to enter all of your to-do items. This will allow you to set specific times for each item. You can be flexible later, but this will ensure there actually are enough hours in the day to do what you have planned.

2. Scan the Textbook Before Reading

Before you dive into that textbook take a few minutes to peruse its contents. Browse the contents, glossary, index, and study questions. That way when you are ready to study you’ll know where to turn for the answers you seek. Reading the study questions before reading the chapter will help you glean the important information from your reading the first time.

3. Spread the Love with Sticky Notes

Summarize important facts as you read on colorful post-it notes, leaving them in the appropriate sections of the book. When you’re through reading the whole chapter return to your sticky notes to review. This is a quick and easy way to review and, because the notes are stuck on the pages they summarize it will be easy to find more information if you need it.

4. Make Flashcards

Flashcards aren’t just for kids – you’ll find them helpful in college as well. Before test time make flashcards to help you memorize people, places, dates, and important terms. You can use 3×5 in index cards, putting the term or question on one side and the answer on the other. You might even want to draw a symbol or picture to aid your memory.

5. Create a Practice Test

When you’re through reading and studying your notes, make up your own practice test. You can include the study questions in the book or make up your own, and don’t forget vocabulary words and any other information you may be tested on. Now take the test and see how you do.

6. Keep it Interesting

This may be stating the obvious, but sometimes we get bogged down in the stress of study and learning. As you study away from home you’ll want to get out and see the sights, get to know the locals. Making your study sessions, or at least the information you’re studying, interesting will help keep your head in the game. Think of ways the information you’re studying can be used other than for the class you’re taking will make it more real.

Using these tips you should be able to absorb, understand, and process a lot more information in a lot less time. Test-taking can be stressful for many people, making it difficult to recall facts when it’s most important. Using your time wisely to study efficiently is the best way to overcome test-day freeze-ups.
