Moving on…) but sometimes we need some exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise. Now we already know Reno Tahoe has endless hiking, biking, and activities we already know and love (and treadmills!), but here are a few gems that are worth checking out if you haven’t already.

Marina PaddleFit

Marina PaddleFit is a family-owned fitness studio at the Sparks Marina where they teach small group fitness classes inside and on the water. All of their classes focus on core strength, balance and functional fun fitness for all ages. Best part: they also have paddleboards, kayaks & a canoe for rent!

Rancho Red Rock

Rancho Red Rock has been putting people and horses together since 1975! All horseback riding lessons are private and can be anything from a walk around the ranch, introducing you to all the horses, to grooming, tacking up, a gentle beginner lesson or a ride out in the valley or hours in the hills. If you don’t think horseback riding counts as fitness, you’ve probably never tried getting in the saddle. Riding can be a great way to strengthen your back and core as well as give you some balance and flexibility. Yee-haw!

Reno Silver Blade Fencing Club

Maybe you’re wanting a Game of Thrones inspired workout? Check out the Reno Silver Blade Fencing Club! As you might have guessed, fencing with skill and confidence requires time, training, and personal application. Fencing is exceptional, however, in that young and old can learn, train, and enjoy fencing together. So grab the whole family and “Stick them with the pointy end.”

You’ve probably seen it while driving past the Reno Arch. The massive climbing wall that goes up forever… but have you actually tried it? Yes your arms will be spaghetti the next day, but it’s totally worth it. They’ve built everything to accommodate everyone in the family, from first-timers to the most experienced climbers. And if climbing is not your passion, check out their slackline or their yoga and bootcamp classes!

Sure, the earthy chic boutique hotel design is gorgeous — the first I have seen that frames and hangs @instagram art on the walls; the concert venue, organic, locally farmed food, craft beers, etc are on point; but what I love most is that everything to the bed linens is made from sustainable, recyclable products. Base Camp Reno is a part of the Whitney Hotel to promote casual elegance and the city’s active lifestyle. I probably should have anticipated this, Reno being the closest major city to Burning Man — but I had no idea. Love it here! From happily divorced women throwing their wedding rings into the Truckee River, to famous names like Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra rolling into town, the bridge played a huge role in putting Reno on the map back in the day. The original concrete bridge was built in 1905, and with over a century of wear and tear, along with flooding issues, it was time to consider a replacement. Not only did the project finish under budget and 8 months ahead of schedule, but the results are one beautiful, new structure that residents are proud to see in downtown Reno.

A celebration was held Tuesday, April 12 and included champagne toasts, speeches by Reno historians, a special bridge lighting ceremony, and plenty of first experiences walking the new bridge. Nearby businesses are also thrilled for the project to come to an end and welcome new and returning customers to stop in with the added pleasure of a beautiful view.

It may be just a short drive away from downtown Reno (26 miles to be exact), but visiting Virginia City is like taking a step back into another century. With staged gunfights, locals in period costumes and historic buildings lining the streets, visitors get a feel for what this mining town was really like during the late 1800s. While they pride themselves on staying true to their roots, they are always thinking of ways to add to the experience. Here are some reasons to plan a trip to Virginia City in 2016:

Bar Hopping is a Long-Standing Tradition

Throughout its history, there once were as many as 115 bars and saloons in Virginia City. Today, there are close to 15 open for business, many of them resembling their original appearance. Their most recent addition is just one more awesome stop to add to Reno Tahoe USA’s growing brewery scene. Virginia City Brewery and Taphouse brews and sells over 10 different styles of beer. Try their Yellowjacket Honey Pale Ale or Poltergeist Baltic Porter. For a full list of watering holes in town, visit the Virginia City Saloons page.

They have also introduced saloon crawls for visiting adults to learn a little while they drink a little. There are four crawls scheduled in 2016 and each have their own creative theme while guiding participants through some of the city’s most beloved buildings. During the crawls, make sure to snag a taste of the city’s own, newly introduced, Cemetery Gin. It’s laced with Nevada pine nuts for a blow-your-mind flavor.

Events as Unique as the Town Itself

There’s no doubt about it, when you come for entertainment in Virginia City, they don’t disappoint. Their event schedule stretches from February through December and you won’t find a more eclectic list of events anywhere else. For example, the International Camel & Ostrich Races are held in early September while the World Championship Outhouse Races are at the beginning of October. Of course, there are plenty of museum specials, train rides and food events if you want to keep it simple. Just don’t count out the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry! Their newest event is The Way It Was Rodeo held September 17-18. Enjoy some good, old-fashioned fun with bronc riding, barrel racing and more.

If you’re looking to hold your own unique event, they’ve got room for that too! With venues offering space for 30+ people or 300+ people, weddings and group tours are easily accommodated. Visit their newly added venues: Virginia City Arena & Fairgrounds and Gold Hill Depot. See the full list on their website.

Get in Your Steps and Vitamin D

One of the best things about Virginia City is the ability to park in one spot and walk your way through the day. Parking is available along their main street with parking lots scattered throughout the town. They are currently developing another lot to help accommodate visitors and event participants. Planning a day out with the family has never been easier! Step back in time and schedule a mine or trolley tour to get the most out of your visit.

If you want to experience the unique culture of Reno Tahoe, spending time at the Riverwalk District is a must. The Riverwalk District is located in the heart of downtown Reno, between Arlington and Lake Street, along the Truckee River. There are many things to see and do along the Riverwalk District from shopping, to public art displays, entertainment and a whitewater park. But quite easily, one of the most exciting aspects of the Riverwalk District are the bars, taverns and dining options along the river. Some of the best restaurants and bars in Reno Tahoe are located in this area, and there is no better way to get a little taste of them all than by attending one of these events:
